Notification of the passing of Air Force veteran, NWA/DL Captain and Flight Instructor Samuel ‘Sam’ David Hollins, age 60. Captain Hollins hired on with Northwest 09-06-1985 and was based DTW.

Samuel David Hollins, Sr., age 60, of Lake St. Louis, MO died on March 3rd, 2013 at Vanderbilt Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel Fox and Joyce Birmingham Hollins and his sister Joy "Bittie" Hollins.

Sam was a scholar, athlete, and a gentleman. He graduated from Battle Ground Academy and the United States Air Force Academy. Following his graduation from the Air Force Academy, he attended pilot training to become a fighter pilot and was selected to fly the F-4 at McDill AFB, Tampa, FL. After completing F-4 RTU, Sam was sent to Osan AFB, South Korea. His next assignment was Clark AFB, Philippines. Later, based on his skills as a fighter pilot he was assigned to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada and flew F-5 with the elite Aggressor Squadron Training Aircrew with dissimilar aircraft in air combat maneuvers. Sam later transitioned to the Missouri National Air Guard and flew the F-4 and F-15 with the 110 TYFS at Lambert Airfield in St. Louis, MO. He retired from the Air Guard with the rank of Major. After his military retirement, Sam became a Captain and Flight Instructor with Northwest Airlines and later Delta Airlines.

Sam was a devoted husband, loving father, and a dear friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Carla Jane Hollins, son Samuel David Hollins, Jr., step daughter Kathryn Leigh Rowley and step son David Samuel Rowley , sister Gay Hollins-Wiggins along with many cousins and relatives in the Middle Tennessee area.

A service will be at Marshall Donnelly Combs, Nashville, TN 11:00 am this Wednesday, March 6th with a visitation preceding service from 9:00 to 11:00. For details on the visitation and service in St. Peters, MO see notices at www.baue.com

Memorial gifts are requested to be sent to Wounded Warriors or American Cancer Society.
