Obituary  :  MICHAEL N. WOOD

WOOD, Michael N. Age 85, husband of Mary (Minturn) Wood, resident of Hamilton-Wenham, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from a traumatic brain injury hours following a fall after bravely struggling with dementia for several years. Born in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late Dr. H. Curtis Wood Jr. and (Margaret L. (Brown) Wood. In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by two sons, Peter and Michael of the Hamilton-Wenham area; his daughter, Christina Donovan; four grandchildren of Upperville, VA; and his older brother Curtis Wood of Naples, FL. He was predeceased by his oldest brother Theodore Wood of Santa Rosa, CA.

Mike was an avid tennis player, traveler, environmentalist, philanthropist, clever and eloquent writer, self-taught pianist, and unwavering animal lover always with his loyal dog by his side. He graduated from Phillips Academy-Andover and then went to the University of Virginia for two years before leaving to serve as a Naval Pilot for five years where he flew throughout Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the Arctic, and the Caribbean. Following his Navy duty, he finished up his studies at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with honors, majored in journalism, played on the varsity squash team and was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity. After fundraising for Penn, and then teaching English for a few years at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA, Mike could not resist turning his lifelong passion for flying into his full-time career over the next 30 years for Delta Airlines where he ultimately earned the title of Captain.

Upon retirement, Mike was active supporting various environmental and animal welfare organizations and spent much of his time enjoying his beloved summer home on Squam Lake, NH he visited annually beginning in childhood. With a grin, smirk, or twinkle in his eye, Mike could often be found telling humorous stories to anyone who would listen about his adventurous life, inserting little hints of sarcasm with his playful, creative, witty, and often dry sense of humor. Mike enjoyed indulgences like his series of antique sports cars and various aerobatic 2-seater planes where his legacy remains as the bravest, fairly insane, but undeniably competent pilot as he continued performing loops, barrel rolls and other tricky maneuvers over the lake until he was 80 years old! Time to Fly the Friendly Skies Forever Free, Captain Wood.

A Celebration of Life will occur during the summer of 2021 on Squam Lake. Donations to his favorite charities in his memory can be made to the following: AnimalsAsia.org, PrimarilyPrimates.org or SquamsLandTrust.org.

Obituary :  Anthony Jamieson BALDWIN

Passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2020, in the home he had built and lived in since 1978. An Apple Valley resident of over 50 years, he proudly raised and unconditionally supported a wildly loving family alongside his wife, Glenda Guthrie Baldwin. A fun-seeking fraternity brother and one-time Treasurer of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, freshman basketball player and graduate of The University of Arizona (Class of '62), he went on to serve as a Naval Officer before retiring as a Northwest Airlines pilot after 32 years of dedicated flying. An avid golfer in his prime and his poker skills helped put him through college. His poker buddies would call him a gentle giant, and until the end he would never miss a game at the Days Inn over pizza and Sprite. To know him is to love him, whether you were the cashier at Kwik Trip or one of the many athletes he coached throughout the years. His stories were unmatched, along with his kindness and dry sense of humor. We will be forever missing him in person, while always knowing he undoubtedly lives on through our memories and in our hearts. The family asks that you share photos, stories and/or respects on the guestbook. A memorial golf tournament is being planned for his birthday weekend in the spring (May 2021), in hopes that Crystal Lake Golf Course will host. Tony, Papa, Dad, Mr. B, Ambassador, Coach, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Friend… you are truly one of a kind. The daily Sports section is saved for you, over a cup of black coffee… until we meet again. Obituary :  Richard G. 'Dick' Boyle

Zephyr Cove - Richard G. 'Dick' Boyle turned westbound for his final flight on December 3, 2020 from COVID pneumonia with underlying conditions. Dick was born December 26, 1930 in Pennsylvania, to Gordon D. and Virginia B. Boyle, née Dinger. The family relocated when Dick was a youngster to southern California. He later received a Bachelor of Business Administration from USC. Like so many young men of that time, he entered the United States Air Force, where he received his flight training. He continued to serve in the Air National Guard upon completion of his active duty service. After leaving active duty, he was hired by Western Airlines in 1966, where he flew until retiring from Delta Airlines in 1990.

Family and friends were always amazed at Dick's passion for life. He raced cars - once with Steve McQueen. He was particularly proud of his Ferrari which he brought back from Italy in the 60s. As a cyclist he toured the world, including North America, and his mileage totaled in the thousands. On one tour, he rode a segment of the famously difficult Tour de France route - with a fractured hand. Dick also rode three of the five climbs that comprise the California 'Death Ride' not just once, but several times. 'Tough nut' described Richard Boyle.

Hiking, skiing and spending time in the outdoors were also favorite pursuits. He was particularly proud of his climb to the top of the Matterhorn.

Bikes and cycling were the central focus of Dick's later years. He helped a friend get started in a Lake Tahoe bike shop, and taught cycling lessons. Dick taught many kids how to ride a bike. Generously sharing his two-wheel passion came naturally to Dick.

Dick was an avid collector of books, magazines and miniature liquor bottles in addition to Western Airlines memorabilia. He was particularly proud of his original editions of Edgar Rice Burroughs 'Tarzan' series.

He was predeceased by his parents, son James G. Boyle, and sister Virginia Lynn Potter. He is survived by his brother David E. Boyle, son Robert Boyle, stepson Robert W. Smith and Barbara, Robert's wife, stepdaughter Sharon M. Smith, and granddaughters Amanda and Claudia Smith. He will be missed by a large extended family in Texas, Georgia, Illinois and Nevada, in addition to many friends from the airlines and the Air National Guard.

Obituary :  William Clark Lovell Jr.

William Clark Lovell, JR, 80, of La Quinta, California, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2020.

Bill was born in Farmville, VA to William Clark and Marian Lovell. Growing up in Martinsville, VA, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. After attending college at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, Bill joined the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War.

In February of 1969, Bill was hired by Western Airlines, where he began his 30-year career as a commercial pilot. It was during that time that he met his wife, Kristine Parkhill, a then flight attendant, while they were both working for Western and based in San Francisco, CA. Their family grew to include two children, William and Kelly. In 1989, the Lovell family moved to Park City, UT, as Bill finished his flight service as a pilot for Delta Airlines, based in Salt Lake City. After retirement, Bill and his wife moved to La Quinta, CA.

When he was not in the air or spending time with his family, Bill could often be found at the golf course. He had an immense love and a deep respect for the game, and many of his closest friendships were forged on fairways. Bill was a natural teacher, and he often shared his knowledge and skill with younger players, including his children. Over the years, Bill considered himself fortunate to be an active member at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, The Palms in La Quinta, and Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Park City.

He will be remembered as a loyal friend, a loving husband and father, a jovial story-teller, and an exceptionally kind and generous man. Bill was often quiet and thoughtful, but those close to him knew him to have an incredible sense of humor, a contagious laugh, and a very big and tender heart.

In 2016, Bill was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer. He battled cancer quietly and bravely, aided and cared for by his wife. Bill is preceded in death by his son, Will. He is survived by his wife, Kristine, his daughter, Kelly, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He will be missed very, very much.

Obituary :    Douglas Trelling Rounds of Zebulon, Georgia flew West peacefully on his final flight December 9, 2020. He was 86 years old.

Douglas (Doug) was born in Dowagiac, Michigan on June 3, 1934. At a young age Doug realized in order to be successful in life he would have to work hard to overcome some of the obstacles that he faced growing up. And that he did. Graduating from Holly High School in 1952 (with Honors) in Holly, Michigan where he was class president, he also excelled in all high school sports. Upon finishing high school, he even received offers from the Yankees and the Cubs for a baseball career. But since he was a young boy, Doug had a keen interest in airplanes and elected to pursue his dreams in aviation instead of baseball.

After high school he attended Western Michigan College to receive his pilot’s license and ratings. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving a year before being RIF’d (reduction in force) and he was honorably discharged.

He was hired by Delta Air Lines December 3, 1956 and had a 38-year career with Delta as an airline pilot before he officially retired June 3, 1994. During his career with Delta, he flew every different type of airplane the airline owned from Douglas DC-3s to Boeing 747s. Not only was he a pilot for Delta, but also a Flight Instructor and Check Airman on ten of the twelve different types of airplanes he flew during his career. Doug was also a member of the Air Line Pilots Association and served on its Safety and Accident Investigation Committees for many years.

His passion was aviation and he was a licensed pilot for 68 years, a licensed airplane mechanic (Airframe/Powerplant) for over 60 years with Aircraft Inspection Authority on his mechanic’s license for over 50 years.

In his personal aviation life, he owned more than 50 different antique and classic airplanes while restoring/maintaining numerous aircraft. He was a respected aviation historian with several articles published. Doug served as a Director of the Antique Airplane Association (AAA) for 32 years, and Vice President of the AAA for 10 years. He was a member of the American Aviation Historical Society, the Early Birds, the Quiet Birdmen, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA where he served as a judge for antique aircraft during the years 1975 thru 1977 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin), and many other aviation organizations. He built and owned the second oldest (1967) registered airport in Pike County, Georgia that still exists today.

Doug served his local community in many ways by being on numerous committees such as Planning and Zoning for Pike County, the Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club, and he volunteered for numerous events in Pike County.

Doug had a love for dogs, his farm, his airport, and antique cars, but most of all, he loved and cherished his wife Bonnie more than anything.

Doug was preceded in death by his father Francis Charles Rounds, his mother Marjorie Rose Rounds, and his brother Norman Rounds.

He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie of 67 years, his brother Don Rounds, daughter Leslie Ratliff (Eddie), daughter Tracy Sims (Herb), son Doug Rounds Jr (Mark), son Nathan Rounds (Linda), 6 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

A lyric from a famous songwriter comes to mind when Doug recently reminisced about his own past: “Through 86 years of perpetual motion, some of it was magic, some of it was tragic, but I had a good life all the way”. God Speed Captain Rounds, May Blue Skies and Tailwinds always be with you…….

A memorial service for Douglas Trelling Rounds will be announced at a later date.

Belated notification of the death of retired Northwest Airlines Captain Robert W. Dickson, 82.  His wife Jeanne sent the obituary below.  Expressions of condolence may be sent to her at 48671 Shady View Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92260, phone 760-346-9658, and email <trkydog@comcast.net>.

Robert W. Dickson

1937 ~ 2020

Captain Robert ‘Bob’ Dickson passed away on July 04, 2020 at age 82. His wife Jeanne was at his side. Jeanne mentioned that was their favorite holiday, so leave it to Bob to go out with a “bang!” Bob had a series of health issues in the last few years, Parkinson’s, and pneumonia were the official cause of death.

Bob was born to William Lucas and Dorothy Dickson on September 27, 1937. His father was well known for writing the Probate Code for the state of Oregon. He is survived by his older sister, Barbara Bell (Ross), his son Robert W. Dickson Jr, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bob grew up on the lake in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He loved boating, water skiing, and swimming. Bob played high school football and winters found him on the ski team on Mt. Hood. He continued with the ski teams at the University of Oregon, joining the ATO fraternity and graduating with a major in Economics. He chose Air Force ROTC in college, explaining that he joined so he could fly instead of having to march in the Army.

After graduation Bob reported to Lackland AFB, TX for preflight training. Following preflight Bob was sent to Craig AFB, AL for (UPT) with the renown USAF Class 61-D. Upon earning his Air Force silver wings, Bob was assigned to SAC for B-52 training. He received his ‘check out’ and weapons training at Castle AFB, CA and was sent (PCS) to a permanent squadron at Fairchild, AFB, Spokane, WA.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis Bob’s squadron was deployed to Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico. During this tense period SAC B-52 crews flew Defcon 2 airborne alerts from Ramey AFB loaded and pointed toward Russia.

Bob came out of the Air Force just in time for an interview with NWA. He was hired by NWA on August 02, 1965. He became a Second Officer on the Boeing 707 series at Seattle (SEA).  Bob flew the Orient for several years, which included Military Airlift Command (MAC) military charter flights. Thereafter he upgraded to copilot on the 720/320 out of SEA until an opportunity to fly Captain on the 727 in MSP.

In early 1974 Bob and crew were snowed in at Milwaukee, WI. He was required to change rooms and the flight attendants offered to help him by carrying his bags etc. Behind them while he was checking in, a United cockpit crew came up and seeing this commented, “Guy, I think we’re flying for the wrong airline!”

Amongst that crew was Flight Attendant Jeanne Klees and that meeting bloomed into a romance and a marriage in 1974. They flew together for several years and had agents deliver love notes when they were not flying together. They even made the St. Paul paper saying that you might want to be careful what you say to the Flight Attendant, because her husband may just be the Captain.

Bob introduced Jeanne to healthy pursuits that were not so common to Minnesota such as sailing, mountain skiing, snorkeling – scuba diving all over the world. Bob kept a 37-foot Chewy Lea sailboat on Orcas Island, WA.

Not one to stand quietly in the shadows, Bob was known as a facilitator. That included volunteer work with ALPA. Those who knew of Bob’s service as the NWA ALPA Hotel Chairman are grateful for the quality of our layover accommodations.

Bob introduced Jeanne to healthy pursuits that were not so common to Minnesota, such as snorkeling and scuba diving.  Then they had a charter boat moored in Belize, for five years, and their final boat was a 48’ Juan Marie made in Finland. Home was in Bellevue, WA.

Bob retired in September 1997 and they moved to a boating/golf retirement community called Semiahmoo on the border of WA and B.C. They lived on their boat while they built their dream home on the water, sailed the islands, and in the winter enjoyed the warmth of Palm Desert.

As Bob’s health issues crept up and sailing became difficult, traveling on cruises was a better choice to see the wonders of the world, he never looked back.

(- Jeanne Dickson)

NWA Pilot John (Jack) Schricker, age 94, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday November 19, 2020 at Trail of Orono Senior Residence in Orono, Minnesota. Jack was born February 4, 1926 in Spooner, WI., the son of John and Nora Schricker. Jack had five siblings, two who died at an early age.

Jack attended Spooner High School and as early as he could afford a model airplane kit at Ben Franklin, he would buy and build one. He did not participate in many school sports or teams, as right after the Great Depression working took precedence. One Jack’s growing up memories was when his father took him to a Shell Lake County Fair and brought Jack a barnstormer fare to fly with Charles Lindbergh.

In 1944, now a senior in high school Jack and 3 buddies skipped a day of school and took the train to Superior, WI to enlist in the Navy. Jacked served with the famed 301st Naval Construction Battalion in the western Pacific from April 1944 to December 1945. This Battalion built essential base facilities such as harbors, destroying mines and obstructions to harbors, constructing airfield and port facilities, often under combat fire conditions. The names of the Pacific WWII battle locations where the 301st served are iconic: Peleliu, Guam Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima.

After the World War Two, Jack used his GI Bill entitlements to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK where he earned his mechanic and airplane pilot licenses. Northwest Airlines hired Jack as a mechanic apprentice on April 08, 1948. He was initially assigned to the hanger shops at the ‘old’ main base at St. Paul’s Holman Field. Jack excelled in his mechanic career prior to becoming a pilot, he qualified as Crew Chief, Master Mechanic, General Inspector and Flight Engineer. He was thereafter caught up in the trend setting IAM labor strike that began. January 9, 1961. The final labor agreement resulted in end of the mechanic trained Flight Engineer and the onset of the pilot qualified Second Officer.

The final labor agreement really opened an opportunity for Jack’s employment as a pilot. He completed the transition training and was qualified as a copilot/second officer. While flying copilot on the Boeing 720/320 Jack was assigned to Seattle for few years before returning to Minneapolis to take care of his Mother. While living at Prior Lake, MN, Jack met his soon to be wife Jolene Klober. The couple would eventually raise their family, son John and daughter Jayme at Prior Lake.

As Jack’s pilot career progressed, he upgraded to captain on the Boeing 727. This would be his lasting crew position until retirement February 3, 1986.

One of Jack's most exciting times as a pilot is when he was hijacked on May 14, 1976 on a trip out of Seattle. The man demanded to be flown to Mexico, however the pilots convinced him to agree to a stop in Reno to refuel. Police pretended to be the fueling operators, boarded the airplane and grabbed the hijacker before anyone got hurt.

After retiring Jack spent ten years building his own airplane from scratch in the family garage. He flew it a few times and then sold his airplane. The joy of building was what it was all about, a lifetime interest spawned as a young boy building model airplanes. Jack was incredibly active with the family going on vacations, ski trips, and attending his children's many sporting events. After the children left home, Jack and Jolen retired to Hayward WI. Jack always loved the small-town lake life. They met many friends there and were active in many community events.

Three years ago Jack his wife Jolene Schricker. Jack at his death was survived by his son John and daughter Jayme; grandchildren Seth, Taryn, Clare, Joe and John.

Obituary:  Otto Everett Tessmer passed away peacefully in Alexandria, MN on Friday, November 27, 2020.

“Sweet Loveable Evy” (as he liked to be called) was born on April 27, 1932, in Alexandria Minnesota to Otto and Sofy (Haugdahl) Tessmer.  On April 18, 1959, he married Mary Jill Fordham. They raised a son, John, and two daughters, Paula and Karla.

His extensive flying career began in the Navy in 1954. Everett spent most of his Naval career instructing in Pensacola Florida. He claimed that his navy career saved him after two attempts at obtaining a college degree, one at the University of Minnesota and another at St. Olaf in Northfield, MN.  When asked why he left these institutions, he would reply, “I was not kicked out. Rather, I was asked to never return.”

After leaving the Navy, he was hired by Northwest Airlines in 1957 and retired in April of 1992.  He flew as Captain on the 727, 707 & DC10. During his 35 year career, he was a respected instructor and the FAA-designated Check Airman for orals and type ratings on the DC10. In 1970, he was elected by ALPA (Airline Pilots Association) to serve on the Master Executive Council at Northwest Airlines.  He retired as the number one seniority pilot on the DC-10.

When not working, Everett loved the game of golf, especially the grudge matches that included his late brother Bob, his son John and his nephews. One of his greatest golf achievements was playing Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Master’s, courtesy of his beloved niece Anne-Marie Dobbs.

Everett was best known for his marvelous sense of humor. He was given the title “The King of Wit” as he always had a hilarious comeback to any joke. However, he was not known for being handy around the house. For example, when asked by a neighbor who was fixing a boat motor to bring him a screwdriver, Ev promptly returned with vodka and orange juice.  It was 8:30 a.m.

Mostly, he loved his family. While gregarious and social most of his life, in his later years, all he wanted was to be near his children and grandchildren. He will be so greatly missed.

Night Night, Bye-Bye, See Ya, Morning, Love You.

He is survived by his three children, John Tessmer, Paula Olhausen, and Karla Jones, and seven grandchildren, Allen, Laura and Bob Tessmer, Adam and Ashley Olhausen and Jackson and Sophie Jones, his brother Ken Tessmer and wife Tolly, and many adoring cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held Friday, December 4, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, MN. Inurnment will be at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. This service will be live-streamed and recorded for family and friends to view from Ev’s obituary page on the Anderson Funeral Home website at noon on Friday.

A celebration of Ev’s fun-filled life will occur this summer in Alexandria.
