We take this time to honor the memory of retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain David Lee Hardesty, age 85.  David joined Delta Air Lines 02-03-1969 and was based 030/DFW at the time of his retirement in 1999.  He is survived by his wife Johanna, and by his children and stepchildren and their families.

David Lee Hardesty of North Richland Hills, Texas was born January 26, 1939 in Evanston Illinois to Ruth Elaine and Bernard Hardesty. David passed away October 28, 2024 in Grapevine Texas at the age of 85.

 

 David joined the Air Force and proudly served his country. He was honored with several awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross.  David continued his flying career flying commercially for Delta Air Lines He earned the rank of Captain. His travels allowed him to visit amazing places. He really enjoyed traveling. He retired from Delta Air Lines but still loved to travel. He enjoyed the outdoors, mountains and snow skiing.

 

 David was an avid reader and spent hours learning, with an extensive knowledge of computers. He happily shared his knowledge and computer skills when the opportunities presented themselves.

 

 David was also a family man. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

 

David was united in marriage to Johanna, who survives him in the home, on February 26, 1994. Stepdaughter Sheilah Fowler, Holiday Island, Arkansas; Son Dan Hardesty and wife, Christine of Irving; Grandson Blake Hardesty and his wife Alexis, Granddaughter Anna Hardesty; Son Brian Hardesty and wife MaryBeth of Allen; Grandson Christopher Hardesty and Granddaughter Lilliana Hardesty, Brother Jim Hardesty and wife Signe, along with nieces, nephews and many friends.

 

He is preceded in death by his Mother Ruth Elaine Hardesty, Father Bernard Hardesty, Brother Alan Hardesty and Sister Joyce Bachus.

Werderich, age 80.  George first joined North Central Airlines 05-02-1966 and retired with Northwest Airlines.  He is survived by his wife Anita, and by his children and grandchildren.

George Werderich lived a life of fulfillment and accomplishment.  He surrounded himself with people that he loved, going places that he wanted to go, doing things he wanted to do.  George was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 28, 1943 to Elizabeth (Johnson) Werderich and Samuel Werderich.  Growing up on Orleans Street in Old Town Chicago, George described his upbringing as humble, yet an environment that provided him with the tools to succeed in life.  Elizabeth worked hard as a single mother raising George with her family.  Living the classic city lifestyle, George forged a special bond with his cousin Bill Mariani.  George loved to tell stories about Bill, his friends and their exploits in the neighborhood, especially the fun they had playing baseball.

 

Graduating from Waller High School (now called Lincoln Park High School), George attended college at the University of Montana and the University of Chicago.  George studied Journalism, but his time playing football in college is what he loved best.  In 1963 George played football for the University of Chicago club team that ultimately paved the way for the University to restore football to varsity status after the University abolished its historic program in 1939.  Playing football at the U of C under the legendary Walter Hass, George was given the tutelage for coaching which would become one of George’s greatest passions.   

 

George’s love of trains drew him to follow in his Cousin Bill’s footsteps working for various railroads in Chicago. Some of these railroads included the Santa Fe and the Monon among others.  A railroad story from George was sure to bring a smile to any listener’s face.  While he loved the railroad, George found a new passion during this time of his life, aviation.  At 22 years of age, in 1965, George was hired by North Central Airlines to fly as a commercial airline pilot.  He worked for the same management for the next 37 years as North Central became Republic and ultimately Northwest Airlines.  Starting on a DC-3 George flew many different airplanes ultimately receiving a bid to fly the 747 before he retired.  Even though his resume as a pilot is second to none (including a stint as Richard Nixon’s personal pilot) his greatest accomplishment as a pilot was meeting an American Airlines flight attendant while waiting for the employee bus.  Using his gift of gab, after her first flight as a stewardess, George talked Anita Schaeffer into going out for a “first trip drink.”  Anita and George were married within a year and forged a marital bond second to none.  Their relationship is a true love story.

 

Married in 1969, George and Anita moved to Bartlett in 1971 to start their family after their first son was born.  George and Anita immediately sunk roots in the community and never moved from that first house they bought.  George was known around Bartlett for his efforts as a coach.  Coaching brought great joy to George and was a passion throughout his life.  George loved coaching football and baseball best.  In 1973, George and two friends started the Bartlett Raiders football organization.  George organized and coached the Raiders for the next 12 years.  This year, the Raiders are celebrating their 50th anniversary.  The seminal coach, George also coached at Elgin High School, Larkin High School, and Tefft Middle School.

 

Living in Bartlett for 52 years, George and Anita raised their family together having two sons and two daughters.  George was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  George took great pride in attempting to attend all of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  He had a passion for traveling with his wife and family.  The Werderichs have many fun and humorous memories traveling by motorhome together.  George also had a big heart for animals often teaching his children unconditional love through the family’s pets.  Probably because he was a coach, George and Anita were known around Bartlett as the husband and wife you would always see jogging around town.  George’s love for model trains cannot be understated either.  He took great pride in his Lionel train collection and operating the train layout he built in his basement.  George served on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Division of the Train Collectors Association for over 25 years, serving as the President three times.

 

Even though he retired as a commercial pilot, George never left aviation.  In between his travels, George continued to fly and teach others to fly.  He was very proud of the fact that he taught all of his family members how to fly with many of them receiving pilot’s licenses under his instruction.  Beyond his family, George taught others as well.  It is estimated that well over 100 professional pilots can in some way trace their aviation tutelage back to George Werderich.

 

George’s love for his dearest wife Anita is one for the ages.  Married for over 53 years, their children Bob, Wally, Annette and Margie were all raised by George and Anita in a loving household.  George and Anita were inseparable and always on the move.  As their children grew up, George and Anita expanded their family love to their children’s spouses as well as their grandchildren.  Through their actions, George and Anita exemplified a true friendship through the most loving of bonds.

 

George passed on August 16, 2023 on the footsteps of Zion National Park, a place he dearly loved.  He was doing what he enjoyed, traveling and finishing up a run with his wife in the grandeur of the canyons of Zion.  George was with his family.

 

George Werderich is survived by his wife Anita, nee Schaeffer; his children Robert (Donna), Wally (Belem), Annette Werderich (Greg Bartin) and Margie Werderich; his grandchildren George, Sammy and Anita.  His fond cousin Bill (Noreen) Mariani.  George was the adored son of the late Elizabeth.  Visitation Friday, August 25th, 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 950 South Barltett Rd. George Werderich co-founder of the Bartlett Raiders, railroad enthusiast, community leader and professional pilot died on August 17th, 2023, while jogging in Zion Canyon, Utah. A humble pilot (a rarity in this world), tender husband, loving father, steadfast friend, and consummate professional as a colleague…Bob believed in faith, family, and flying. Guided by his Christian witness, based upon his quiet, rocklike faith, and grounded in the community of the Roman Catholic Church, Bob would want us to focus on God and not on himself. Granted, one cannot sum up Bob’s life in a couple of paragraphs, but, since his life inspired us to be better spouses, better siblings, better parents, and better friends, we should recognize it when a great man has walked amongst us.

 

If winning is sitting at a dinner table surrounded by your children…if winning is positively influencing not just your immediate relatives but your extended family, in-laws, friends, subordinates, and leaders…if winning is not just talking about making the difficult choices in life but having the virtue to choose them and live with the consequences, then Robert Bryant lived and died a winner.

 

Bob faced his cancer diagnosis with humility and faithfulness while teaching us the importance of finishing strong. He could have been bitter knowing that he is one of the growing yet oft forgotten number of combat veterans who die, not from their immediate wounds, but from the exposure to the carcinogens found throughout the modern battlefield. Instead, he saw his remaining time as a gift to share with his friends and family.

 

Born in Saint Louis, Missouri on August 19, 1974, the son of Robert H. Bryant, Jr. and Rita Bryant, at ten years old, after visiting an Air Force Museum, Bob knew he wanted to fly F15Es. Commissioned on May 29, 1996, upon graduation from the United States Air Force Academy, Bob pursued a career which saw him fly 154 combat sorties in Iraq and Afghanistan with over 757 combat hours. Testimonials to his leadership, compassion, and courage have poured in from his former teammates across the globe.

 

What mattered most to Bob was the life he built with his wife, Melissa, and their five children: Rebecca, Rachel, Erica, Neave, and John. People knew they were at the Bryants when they heard the infectious laughter, the good-natured humor, and saw the calm, nurturing presence that Bob provided to his whole family. One of the highlights of this past year was officially welcoming their son-in-law, Logan Douglas, into the family at Rachel and Logan’s wedding last summer.

 

Melissa and Bob were especially appreciative of the help and care that Uncle Mark and Aunt Roxanne Mikesch provided Bob as he struggled with the side-effects of the cancer and its treatment. Mark and Roxanne’s daily presence eased the stress that came with fighting the disease.

 

Robert H. Bryant III leaves behind his wife, children, and parents as well as his siblings: Dr Jennifer Colombo (Philip), Mark Bryant (Mary), Kelly Conner (Micah), Katherine Slinkard (William), Samantha Whitehill (Ian), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. The Bryant family wants to thank all of you for your prayers, your presence during the trials that came with a terminal illness, and your continued influence in their lives.

 Captain Ronald Kenneth Hooks, age 87, of LaGrange, passed away on October 25, 2024. Captain Hooks was born on November 24, 1936 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Ronald Hooks and Madge Landman Hooks. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Air Force and was promoted through the ranks to Staff Sargent in just 4 years during the Korean War. Following his years in the Air Force, he had a long career in aviation, beginning with Southern Airways and retiring as a Captain with Northwest Airlines.

Survivors include his wife, June Wheatley Hooks; children, Valarie Paige Hooks, Ronald Wade Hooks and Kelly Lynn Hooks; sister, Jeanette Sands; grandchildren, Emily Peyton Neighbors, Whitney Marie Emberlin and Lucas Hooks; great-grandchild, Kellan Jaid Neighbors; nieces, nephews and extended family.

Captain Hooks was a long-time member of the Lion’s Club of LaGrange, and a member of the LaGrange Gridiron Club. He loved deep-sea fishing, wood-working, hunting and building. He was a member of the Concord Baptist Church.

Memorial services for Captain Hooks will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 2:00 pm at the Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand Chapel. Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm at the funeral home.

David Michael Hedges Obituary

David Hedges, 80, of Peachtree City, Georgia, passed away on July 23, 2024. He was born on October 17, 1943, in San Mateo, California, to the late Robert and Mildred Hedges.

 

David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and playing golf with his friends. For many years, he was a little league coach for both baseball and football, sharing his love of sports with young athletes. Dave also had a passion for music and was often found singing Elvis songs at various social gatherings.

 

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and served his country with honor for six years in the Navy, where he flew F-8s in Vietnam. He was a student at the Naval Fighter Weapons School which later became Top Gun. Dave was also a proud member of the Red River Valley Fighter Pilot Association. After his military service, David had a distinguished 31-year career with Delta Airlines as a Captain and Line Check Airman, flying aircraft including the Convair 880, 727, DC-8, 757, 767, 767 ER, and L-1011.

 

David is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mildred, and his brothers, Jim and Rich. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Arnette; his son, Troy (Kimberly); his daughter, Ashley (Teek); his three cherished grandchildren, Riley, Jake, and Georgia; and his brother, Bob (Roxanne).

 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville.  Visitation will occur prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home on Saturday.

¬¬Captain Harry Eugene LaVigne of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born on February 27, 1939, in Waterbury, Connecticut to Harry Eugene LaVigne Sr and Janet Campbell LaVigne. Harry, known as Brud, lived in Connecticut until 1948 when his folks relocated to St. Augustine, Florida.

 

Brud graduated Ketterlinus High School in May 1956 and moved to Tallahassee, Florida to attend Florida State University. He was a member of the SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) fraternity and graduated FSU in 1960.

 

Next, he joined the US Navy in 1961 after asking the naval recruiting officer if he could fly jets. After flight training, he was assigned to VAW-11 in Coronado, California and in August 1963 he deployed to Vietnam for 7 months aboard the USS Oriskany flying the E1B. September 1965, he deployed once more for Vietnam aboard the USS Kittyhawk for 9 months, flying the E-2A which was the first for this aircraft. Upon returning to the US in 1966, he was assigned to RVAW110 training new co-pilots for 3 years and retired from the Navy in 1969.

 

 

In September of that year he moved his family to Winter Park Florida where he started working for Delta Airlines as a commercial pilot. He moved his family to Miami, Florida and in 1980 transferred to Dunwoody, Ga to finish out his career. Harry flew the DC9, DC8, 727, L1011, and in 1999 he retired as Captain on the 767.

 

Harry met his wife, Phyllis Jacobitz, in San Diego, California in 1963 and married in July of 1965. They had a son, Bryan and a daughter, Karyn. He loved playing tennis and bowling with his Delta family. He loved to travel and camp in his Motorhome with his wife, children and friends. A couple years before retiring, Harry and Phyllis, moved to The Great Outdoors (TGO) in Titusville, Florida where he took up golf.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry Eugene LaVigne & Janet Frances Campbell LaVigne, sister Janice LaVigne Johnson, Brother-in-law, Charles Leroy Johnson.

 

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Marie Jacobitz LaVigne of Cumming, Georgia; son Bryan LaVigne (wife Sherry) of Dallas, Georgia, daughter Karyn LaVigne Brown (husband Jody) of Cumming, Georgia and 6 grandchildren Morgan LaVigne Hill (Daulton), Cody LaVigne (Breanna), Josephine Brown, Kayleigh Brown, Liberty Brown, and Mia Brown.

 

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at The Great Outdoors (TGO), 144 Plantation Drive, Titusville, Florida 32780 on Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 3pm. Visitation with the family after the service in the fellowship hall. Harry will be laid to rest on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 10:00am at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 Us-1, Mims Florida. 32754.

 

The family will have a celebration of life on Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 1pm – 4pm at Newbury Village, 100 Somerton Place, Cumming, Georgia 30040. Bring your favorite story or 2 of Harry, the family would enjoy them.

We honor the life of retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Pete Thelen, who passed on October 9th at the age of 82.  Captain Thelen joined Delta Air Lines 10-28-1963.  He is survived by his wife Mary Lou, and by his children and their families.

Peter William Thelen, 82, of Lady Lake, FL, passed away on October 9, 2024. Peter was born on December 12, 1941 in Ann Arbor, MI to his loving parents; William Peter and Theodora (Bailey) Thelen.

 

Peter became a resident of Florida in 1970 and was a member of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale. Peter began learning to fly at the age of 16 and it quickly became a passion of his. Peter worked for over 33 years as a pilot and flight instructor for Delta Airlines. After his retirement in 1997, he trained the Atlanta, GA Police Department and Fire Department to fly helicopters through his company, Air Pro.

 

Peter will be missed dearly and remembered fondly as a friend, husband, father, pilot and witness for the Lord.

Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Lou Thelen, his children: Lucy Jean, Garon, Trevor and Corey, seven precious grandchildren, and a brother, Jim.

Peter is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jeanie.

HALL, Ronald Leslie

 

Ronald Leslie Hall, an Army veteran whose career in aviation spanned more than four decades, died February 11, 2024 after a brief illness. He was several months short of his 90th birthday.

 

Born May 4, 1934 to Ruth and William Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he graduated from Arlington High School in 1952 and then enlisted in the Army and served in both Japan and Korea as Staff Sergeant.

 

After his release, Ron joined Northeast Airlines as an aircraft dispatcher. In 1960, he married the former Anne Rawson, a union that endured for more than 60 years. The couple had five children.

 

The Northeast/Delta Airlines merger brought Ron and his family to Atlanta in 1972. He retired in 1999 dedicating 43 years to the airline industry.

 

Ron was a devoted Catholic and parishioner of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church for 54 years, as well as a 65-year member of the American Legion.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Richard; his daughter, Zita Baine; and his grandson, Donald Cole Baine. He is survived by his wife, his children, Stacy Barker (Bruce), Thomas Hall (Susan), Erin Smith (Dwight), Lawrence; and six grandchildren, Megan Sivewright (Charles), Ryan Hall, Katherine Smith, Kyle Smith (Callie), Kevin Smith, and Brendan Hall; as well as three great-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10 AM on March 1, 2024 at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive, Atlanta, GA 30328.

Remembering the life of Captain Robert Francis Schorr, age 94, retired Delta Air Lines pilot and Delta Golden Wings member.  Captain Schorr joined Delta Air Lines 06-03-1957.  Widowed in January of 2017, Bob is survived by his children and their families.

Robert F. Schorr, a devoted family man and veteran aviator, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024, in Fayetteville, GA, at the age of 94. Born on June 15, 1930, in Chicago, IL, Robert led a distinguished life marked by service, dedication, and love for his family.

 

Robert proudly served his country as a Naval Aviator, piloting aircraft from the decks of aircraft carriers during his tenure with the United States Navy. Following his honorable service, he transitioned to a career in commercial aviation, retiring as a pilot for Delta Airlines after many decades of safely guiding passengers across the skies.

Additionally, Robert was an original board member at Delta who played a crucial role in bringing the Delta Air Lines Museum to fruition, preserving aviation history for generations to come.

 

Outside of his professional endeavors, Robert was deeply involved with the Catholic Archdiocese, contributing significantly to the establishment of Most Blessed Sacrament, which served as both a church and school. He also chaired the committee responsible for the conversion of Sacred Heart to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Essie Lathan Schorr, in 2017; his parents, Emil and Marie Schorr; and his brother, Gerald Schorr. Robert leaves behind a legacy of love and family in his surviving daughter, Valerie Bennington; son, Robert Schorr and his wife Kristi; grandchildren, Victoria Little and her husband Ray, Andrew Whatley and his wife Megan, Kenzie Schorr and her husband Mark, Zachary Schorr, and Kole Schorr; and great-grandchildren, Reese Little, Reagan Little, Chapman Whatley, Holden Whatley, Blakely Schorr, and Bristol Morton.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 11 o'clock in the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home, with Deacon Mark Friedlein officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., with a vigil beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Parrott Funeral Home and Crematory.

 

Robert's life was a testament to strength, commitment, and the enduring bonds of family. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
