Richard Hooper Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Darst Funeral Home on Mar. 31, 2026.

Richard "Rich" Wayne Hooper, 87, of Kingwood, Texas, passed away on March 27, 2026.

Born on January 26, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Rich grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he developed the character, determination, and curiosity that would guide him throughout his life. He later graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, beginning a life marked by purpose, achievement, and service.

Rich proudly served his country as an attack pilot in the United States Marine Corps, including service in Vietnam, before going on to build a distinguished career with Delta Airlines, where he served as a Captain and Line Check Airman. Flying was not only his profession, but also his passion, reflecting his adventurous spirit, steady character, and deep sense of purpose.

Beyond his accomplished aviation career, Rich was passionate about sharing his knowledge and love of flight with others. He taught aerodynamics and other aviation-related courses, mentoring and educating future pilots and aviation professionals with the same skill, discipline, and enthusiasm that defined his own career. He was also an accomplished author, writing three books, including textbooks on aerodynamics, that reflected his knowledge, experience, and dedication to the field of aviation.

In addition to his military and aviation achievements, Rich devoted more than 30 years to volunteering and working with The Sunshine Kids organization, where he made a lasting impact on the lives of countless children and families. He also proudly served on the board of The Sunshine Kids. His compassion, generosity, and commitment to helping others were hallmarks of the life he lived.

Rich also found great joy in the beauty of classical music, which reflected his thoughtful nature and appreciation for life's enduring elegance.

Above all, Rich was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Hooper of Kingwood, Texas; his oldest daughter, Kym Virgadamo and her husband, Chris Virgadamo, of Clear Lake, Texas; granddaughter Lexie Virgadamo of Pearland, Texas; his daughter, Kerri Thigpen and her husband, Chris Thigpen, of Austin, Texas; granddaughter Camryn Thigpen of Austin, Texas; and his son, Kevin Hooper and his wife, Melinda Hooper, of Austin, Texas.

Rich will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family. His remarkable life of service - to his country, to aviation, to education, and to the children and families he supported through The Sunshine Kids - leaves a legacy that will endure for generations. He touched countless lives through his leadership, generosity, and love.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

William E. (Bill) Horne

February 13, 1940 ~ March 24, 2026

“To my friends formerly Northwest Orient now Delta, it is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of our friend Bill Horne. Bill started his pilot career with Northwest around the same time I started stewardess training in the 60's and we became fast friends, easy to do with that smiling face and fun personality. He had been struggling as of late with Alzheimer's and was living in a memory care facility close to his nieces, who lovingly cared for him. He passed on Monday morning with the girls with him and he requested no memorial or services. If you would like to send a card of condolence to his 'girls' as he referred to them, please p.m. me for the address. R.I.P. my friend, it was a great ride.💔

Paul Denton Obituary

Paul Gene Denton passed away at the age of 96 on Saturday, March 21, 2026. He was blessed to be sleeping peacefully at home with his family nearby.
Paul was born February 2,1930 in Barlow, Kentucky, the son of Paul Furman and Florence Gertrude Denton. Shortly after his birth they moved to Jackson, Michigan, where the family lived until 1940 when they moved to Dexter. Paul graduated from Dexter High School, Class of '48. He was drafted into the Army in 1951 and trained and served as a helicopter mechanic in Oklahoma, until his discharge in 1953. He had no college education but with the help of several mentors who believed in his self-motivation and determination, he learned to fly at the Ann Arbor Airport. He was hired as a Co-Pilot by North Central Airlines in 1958 and flew out of Willow Run Airport until the 70's when he became a PIC (Pilot in Command) Captain for Northwest Airlines, flying out of Metro Airport. He was a Captain's Captain and was well-respected among his peers. He loved flying.
Paul had four children with his first wife, Betty Mast (Charlie, Paula, Laura, and Tommy) and was the quintessential 60's Dad. Family outings to the State Fair, Detroit Zoo, Greenfield Village, Hudson's at Christmas time, Boat Shows and Christmas Carnivals at Cobo Hall, and Cedar Point were highly anticipated annual events. On those days his strict Pilot persona would transform into an over-indulgent, happy go lucky dad full of fun. The family also enjoyed many well-planned camping trips. Paul was very proud of his highly maintained "rig" that consisted of a small Nomad trailer and a curtained-station wagon (custom designed by their Mom to keep the sun off the four kids while they slept) with an aluminum row boat secured to the top that all the kids learned to water ski behind by "following the bubble trail." A giant sandbox and an ice skating rink were seasonally enjoyed by all the kids growing up in the Ypsi neighborhood of Hickory Hill. The neighborhood was also occasionally treated to a fly-by "wave" when Paul would be heading out on a flight that took him overhead. His children were very proud of their handsome dad in his uniform and cap.
Paul married his second wife, Eleanor Price, in 1977 and retired in 1990 after 32 years of flying. He resumed his life-long hobby of motorcycling, traveling across the U.S. on his Honda Gold Wing and enjoyed houseboating on the Tennessee River in Kentucky, and vacationing in Naples, Florida, with Eleanor. Yet he often mentioned how lucky he had been to have a job he loved.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; his parents; two sisters, Werdna Basler and Patty Denton; his first wife, Betty; and children, Laura and Tom Denton. Survivors include his children, Charlie and Paula Denton; four grandchildren, Jeremy Denton (Charlie), Megan Krull (Paula), Kyler Denton McHardy (Laura), Paul Denton (Tom); and great-granddaughters, Evelyn Mae (Megan) and Amelia Grace (Kyler).
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 7th at 1:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea, with visitation starting at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association at https://diabetes.org/.

Richard Miller Obituary

Rick was born in Duluth and enjoyed growing up on Lake Superior's north shore and surrounding woodlands. Later, he attended Hamline University as a history major. After graduating, he joined the Marine Corps as a pilot and then flew for Northwest Airlines until retiring in 1994. He and Carole Senty (who was a flight attendant) were married in September of 1975 and enjoyed 50 wonderful and adventuresome years together.

Rick loved everything about the outdoors, including all the activities that could be shared with his much loved family and good friends. This often involved boats or canoes on lakes or rivers and being in the woods with ticks and mosquitos. And, the family dogs joined in too. He had a great sense of humor…telling hilarious stories, clever puns and dad jokes.

He enjoyed road trips with Carole, especially in the Southwest. After Rick retired, they began wintering in Arizona, where they had a circle of wonderful friends, who were mostly Canadian. They especially enjoyed having their children and grandchildren visit them, often for great hiking trips up into Colorado and Utah.

Years before retiring, Rick and Carole built a home on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. Rick's family had a long history on Leech Lake, and this "cabin" was to be their retirement home. The family enjoyed the cabin for many years…until Rick decided that winters were too cold there, and that golf in Arizona was a better idea. Fortunately, Leech Lake has a favorite resort that Rick & Carole, and five generations of family were and are able to enjoy summers there.

A son's farewell:

My dad passed away on Friday, March 20th, at the age of 91. I can tell you he was a great dad, husband, brother, uncle, grandad, friend, person. And he lived a big and long good life. A fighter pilot in the Marines who became an airline pilot during the golden age of air travel. Unsurprisingly for a boy from northern Minnesota, his passions were all outdoors – fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, skiing, and in retirement golf. But he also loved reading, Jeopardy, and devouring crossword puzzles. Parkinson's disease eventually deprived him of all that, yet he remained upbeat and cheerful to the very end – I like to think because he knew he had maxed out life about as well as one man can. I'm sure he didn't quite know what to do with a weird kid like me, but that didn't stop him from being supportive of all my creative endeavors growing up. I knew I was lucky to have a good dad. And though I've long forgotten how to field strip a rifle, he also showed me something far more important – the value of being a likeable person, the type of person others might want to be around. Now Captain Miller is taking one final flight. I hope to a place where fish never stop grabbing at your line. Love you pops.

-- Josh

Rick is survived by his loving wife Carole; 4 children, Kevin (Carla), Eric (Pam), Teresa "TJ" (Greg) Watkins, and Josh (KJ); 5 grandchildren, Keara (Matt) Neumann, Eva, Nealon, Cece (Mckail) and Addy; and great grandson Milo.

A private celebration of Rick's life will be held at a later date.

IN THE CARE OF Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home & Memorial Park

In Loving Memory

Brian Keith Nance, 71, born in Mount Clemens, Michigan on November 1st, 1954; passed away March 19th, 2026 at his home in North Richland Hills, Texas.

Brian lived a life full of adventure, dedication, and deep love for his family. He was a devoted husband to Pamela Kopfer Nance, whom he met at the young age of 15. Together, they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage, an enduring partnership built on loyalty, commitment, and unwavering support.

He was a proud father to his four daughters, Shannon, Brittany, Heather, and Brianna, and a loving grandfather to Mason (22), Presley (10), Parker (3), and Liam (3). Brian was the kind of dad who showed up - no matter what, no matter when. Whether it was fixing something, offering advice, or simply being present, his family knew they could count on him at the drop of a hat.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Cort and Patty Nance. He is survived by his sister, Stephanie Swart and her husband, Tim Swart of Maryland.

For over 40 years, Brian built an incredible career as a commercial airline pilot, serving as Captain for Northwest and Delta Airlines. His career took him around the globe - from Amsterdam to the Philippines - fueling his love for travel, culture, and experiencing the world in all its diversity. But more than anything, Brian simply loved flying.

Outside of flying, Brian had a wide range of passions. He loved motorcycles, boating, and never missed a good gun show. He was an avid collector, an Amazon enthusiast, and someone who truly enjoyed the simple pleasures - whether that meant dining around the world, listening to country music, watching cartoons, or admiring Clint Eastwood classics. The State Fair, Six Flags, and the Dallas Arboretum were favorite traditions. Animals always held a special place in his heart, growing up with horses, and having cats. dogs, and birds while raising kids. Brian loved taking pictures and videos but was rarely the one in front of the camera. If it existed, he probably had a picture of it - kids, moments, and plenty of random stuff no one else would think twice about. Because of that, he left behind countless albums full of memories.

Brian was known for his strong character - stubborn at times, but always grounded in integrity, generosity, and dependability. He was a proud, strong Texan, a true gentleman who believed in old traditions, carrying himself with respect, pride, and a strong sense of responsibility to those he loved. If something needed fixing, Brian made sure it was taken care of. He lived life on his own terms, with a deep appreciation for the people he loved and the things he cared about most.

More than anything, Brian will be remembered for the way he loved - steadfast, protective, and proud of his family. His legacy lives on in the lives of his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 26th, 1:30pm to 4:15pm, at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home in Colleyville, TX.

A reception will follow at the home, 8605 Shadywood Lane, North Richland Hills, TX, 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
