Mrs. Lucille McEver, 96, of Atlanta died Saturday, the 7th of September, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, retired Delta Airlines Captain, Harold B. McEver. Mrs. McEver and her family had made their home in Sandy Springs for 38 years prior to her becoming a resident of Canterbury Court in 2006. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and Delta Golden Wings. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Dr. Christina McEver of New York, NY and Salisbury, CT.; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mason Cargill of Sandy Springs; granddaughters, Ansley and Adam Gusky of Del Ray Beach, FL and Kristin Cargill of Greenville, SC. Memorial services celebrating Mrs. McEver's life will be held Saturday, September 15th at 11 o'clock in the chapel at Canterbury Court, 3750 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30319. Following the memorial service the family will gather to entomb Mrs. McEver at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions should be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice. Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family Friday, September 14, 2013 from 6 until 8 o'clock in the evening at H. M. OBITUARIES Harold B. McEver: Delta pilot who trained many of his colleagues : Newspaper Obituary

As a Navy aviator and pilot for 34 years with Delta Air Lines, Harold Bell McEver flew everything from prop-driven planes to jumbo jets and trained many other pilots along the way.

Mr. McEver, 76, died Monday of renal failure at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.

With both the Navy and Delta, Mr. McEver was a flight instructor.

After attending North Georgia College, the Gainesville native joined the Navy in 1941. A year later, he received his commission as an officer.

During World War II, he became a primary flight instructor, training pilots in California to fly in the Pacific Theater, and was a plane commander. He was the first U.S. pilot to land a transport in the Philippines after Gen. Douglas MacArthur's forces drove the Japanese out, according to his son, Bruce McEver of Salisbury, Conn.

After the war, Mr. McEver entered the Naval Reserve and went to work for Delta, flying its prop-driven DC-3s. But he took a leave of absence from Delta during the Korean War and returned to active duty.

In 1952 and 1953, he flew for the Naval Air Transport Service, ferrying personnel and supplies around the Mediterranean.

In his career with the airline, Mr. McEver flew everything from smallish prop planes such as the DC-3, which carried 25 passengers around the state, to jumbo jets such as the L-1011, which transport 300 passengers across the country. Mr. McEver flew domestic routes for the airline to New York, Chicago and the West Coast.

As the planes grew larger and were capable of covering longer distances, they naturally grew into more complicated machines that were driven by computerized systems.

"He grew up with the technology," his son said.

"When the computers came into aviation, Dad had to be reprogrammed," he added. "In the early days, he flew by the seats of his pants."

"Harold McEver saw a lot of changes in the airline industry," said Charlie Tutt, chief domestic pilot for Delta. "He was training pilots before we had a centralized flight training department and flight simulators," he said. "He was highly respected at Delta."

Mr. McEver retired in 1980 after 34 years with the company.

In his community, Mr. McEver gave his time to the Atlanta area Boy Scouts, which awarded him their Order of the Arrow for his help in rebuilding the old Bert Adams scout camp near Kennesaw. He also served on the Sandy Springs Clean and Beautiful Committee, helping with early community recycling campaigns.

The funeral was held Thursday at St. John's Methodist Church. H.M. Patterson & Son, Arlington Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving in addition to his son are his wife of 53 years, Lucille McEver; a daughter, Sharon Cargill of Atlanta; a twin brother, William McEver of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Lou McEver of St. Augustine, Fla., and Lucille Sabbagh of Franklin, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. John's Methodist Church.
