Word has been received with the passing of RNPA member retired NWA pilot Douglas Pope, age 72.

Douglas Pope was born November 19, 1941 in Readsburg, Wisconson.  He was the third of four children.  Doug grew up and attended high school in Spring Green, WI, graduating in 1959.  He spent the next two years at the University of Minnesota.  In 1961 Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was trained as a mechanic.  His enlistment was for three years, after which he returned to Minnesota and worked as an automobile mechanic.

Doug had a chance encounter with a senior NWA pilot who sold him on flying.  Thereafter Doug trained hard at Flying Cloud Airport, Minnesota and acquired his FAA certificates and ratings.  The best hopes of his NWA pilot mentor came to fruition when Doug Pope was hired by NWA on June 21, 1965.  Doug Pope began his NWA career flying as a Second Office on the 707/320 series at Seattle.  His career would include long periods flying from the Seattle, Minneapolis, and Detroit bases.  Doug retired from in 2001.

The cause of death was a severe head injury from a fall at home.  He is survived by his wife Joanne and daughter Penny and son Scott from a previous marriage.
