WWII veteran, NWA Capt. Robert H. Younggren

Belated notification with the passing of WWII veteran, RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain Robert Harding Younggren, age 93.  Captain Younggren joined Northwest Airlines 07-22-1949 and retired in 1981.  He was widowed in 1999 with the passing of his wife Olga 'Curly' Tatianna neé Kiryluk Younggren.  Captain Younggren had most recently resided near his daughters in Washington at 919 109th Ave NE Apt 802 , Bellevue  WA 98004-4494.  Perhaps the best alternate contact for the family would be c/o daughter Roberta 'Bobbie' Gillin at

Younggren, Robert 93, died in Bellevue, WA on March 16, 2015. Born to Oscar and Josie Younggren of Hallock, MN, he spent his adult years in the Twin Cities until the death of his beloved wife Curly, in 1999. Thereafter, he moved to WA to be near his daughters Bobbie (Keith) Gillin, and Trish Younggren. He had 4 grandchildren, Calder (Jaime, and great-grandson Cade), and Kramer; Tessa and Max. He is also survived by brother Donald (Lois), and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. To quote a contemporary airline CEO, "Robert was a one of a kind man, a gentle man, and a gentleman, through and through. I don't think I've ever met anyone who lived, breathed, and loved aviation more than Captain Robert." He began flying at age 16, received a direct commission as an officer in the Army Air Corps during WWII, first as a pilot instructor, later flying bombers, fighters, and transport in Europe. He participated in 6 battles and campaigns, was a transport pilot for top ranking wartime generals, and returned to Hallock a decorated veteran. He began teaching flying and crop dusting locally, until 1950 when he began his 30-year career as a commercial pilot with Northwest Airlines in Mpls. Ending his career as an international 747 captain, he'd say, "I didn't work a day in my life. It was all an adventure." Post retirement, he rejoined NWA as a consultant, hiring pilots, and enjoyed years rebuilding and flying old airplanes. At his request there will be no services. He will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, with full military honors. Keep airspeed.
