DL Capt. Walter M. Massey Jr.

Word has been received with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Walter Monroe Massey Jr., age 77.  Captain Massey joined Delta Air Lines 11-30-1964 and I believe was based Atlanta his entire career.  In 1984 he is listed as Captain-Atlanta, in 1989 Chief Instruc. Pilot/ATL, in 1994 Captain ATL/052, and at the time of his retirement in August 1997 he is listed 031/ATL, Ld. Line Ck. Airman.

Obituary.........................................

Walter Massey passed away Monday, January 4, 2016. He graduated from Bessemer High School in Bessemer, AL. He was a scholarship pitcher for the University of Alabama's baseball team. He served in the U.S. Army Aviation before becoming a pilot for Delta Airlines. There he managed the MD-88 and MD-11 programs. In 1996 he flew the Olympic flame from Athens, Greece to Los Angeles, CA. He retired from Delta in 1997 after 32 years of service. Walt served on the Cobb County Parks and Recreation Board. He was ranked in both national and state tennis. He played Delta tournaments with the late Bill Hay and he played Father and Daughter tennis at the U.S. Open with daughter Tara. He also coached boy's baseball with his son-in-law Steele McCown, his best friend. He was a great scratch golfer. Walt served on the Connection Team with his wife Betty at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. He was always a winner in everything except cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife Betty, daughter Tara McCown and her husband Steele; son Walter Massey III; grandchildren Ashley and Hunter McCown and Trivette Baker. He is also survived by his mother, Ethel Massey and brother, William Massey. A service will be held in his honor Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church Chapel in Marietta, GA. A burial will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Arrangements made by H M Patterson Canton Hill Chapel in Marietta, GA.
