Obituary  :  John Vancil Homer

Cherished husband and father, John Vancil Homer, passed away May 9 in Santa Cruz, California. He was 64 years old.

 

John was born on December 7, 1956 to his parents Robert Martin Homer and Elizabeth Strother Anderson in Alton, Illinois. The family eventually settled in San Jose, California where John grew up in a lively household with five older brothers.

 

He graduated from Willow Glen High School in 1975, making some lifelong friends and meeting his future wife, Frances Maxwell. He attended San Jose State University and Oakbrook College of Law.

 

John became a pilot for Delta Airlines and a successful entrepreneur, owning several businesses, managing medical clinics and investing in real estate. He and Frances raised three sons and a daughter and lived in California, Hawaii, and Virginia.

 

John was active in and enjoyed his volunteer work with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He taught Sunday School, where he was known to tell a very entertaining and edge of your seat scripture story, and also enjoyed volunteering as a temple worker.

 

John was known as a family man, devoted to the well being of his wife and children. Friends will remember him as a gentle giant of a man. His hobbies included flying, cooking and eating. His accomplishments included landing a burning airplane, outsmarting criminals and making the best French onion soup.

 

John is survived by his beloved wife Dr. Frances Homer and his children, J. Homer, Noelle Kemp and husband Christopher Kemp, Robert Homer and Daniel Homer and the grandchildren he adored: Skyler, Kalani and Kamea. He is also survived by his brothers Steve, Jim, Richard, George, and Bruce and their families. He will be dearly and deeply missed.
