~ IN MEMORY ~

Military veteran, DL Capt. Harold (Skip) Lee Sparry

August 19, 1937 - July 7, 2021

The following is from Jack Vickers:  Skip was a great guy. He and I were in a Marine Reserve Squadron and did some flying switching off as command at times. I had the help signed out for his last flight and Let him do what he wanted. He flew over to SMU and flew very low near the women's dorm and when I got back Skipper was not happy because a professor got our tail number and called us in. I told the skipper that Sparry was giving the girls a fly by and he understood since it was Skip and he was always pulling something like that. His wife said she remembers that day for it was her he was looking for. She said we were just about on the ground.

Skips father was also named Harold and was always called Skip.

Wife is Dottie, married June 8, 1968. There will be no service and his body went to Southwestern Medical. Skip's passion was biking and a strong member of the Rails to Trails converting old abandoned rail lines to trails.

Dottie can't remember when he joined Delta but he had close to 31 years when he retired so it must have been close to my year (Jack Vickers), June 1966. He had to be a class or two ahead of me because I flew engineer on the DC-6/7 with him flying junior co-pilot as I remember. Too far back.

Skip leaves his wife Dottie, two daughters, one living here and one in Brooklyn, and a son living in Portland.

A biking enthusiast, here is a news article about Skip dated Sept. 2010…. https://starlocalmedia.com/planocourier/news/masters-of-the-track-cyclists-display-domination-at-national-meet/article_14fc8dec-6772-5215-965a-9f5e180cf055.html

Skip Sparry

Sparry’s cycling resume is extremely impressive. At 73, the Plano resident added to his resume by winning a gold medal and two silvers at the U.S. Masters.

What may be even more impressive is Sparry’s resume off the bike. He’s an ex-Marine and a retired pilot for Delta Airlines. Sparry also has the pleasure of being a pilot for a special guest.

“He was once a pilot for President Lyndon B. Johnson,” Chenowth said. “Skip started riding in the 40s, but he has had an incredible life away from the track.”

Sparry won the first medal of the week for C-Revolution. Quickly following his success were cyclists such as Frisco residents Nelson Li and Kirt Bickel. Li, a biomedical technician, and Bickel, a writer, each won one gold and two silver medals.
