WWII veteran, WC/RW/RC (NWA) Capt. Muryl Cole

June 21, 1922 ~ July 30, 2021

 


Word has reached us with the passing of retired Northwest predecessor pilot Captain Murl R. Cole, age 99.  Captain Cole began his commercial flying career with West Coast Airlines 06-15-1948 and retired with Republic prior to their merger with Northwest Airlines.  He is survived by his wife Christiane ‘Chris’, his daughter Peggy, and his grand- , great-grand- and great-great grandchildren.

Obituary :  CDR Muryl R. Cole, U.S.Navy ret.

 

Scottsdale – On Friday, July 30, 2021, we lost yet another member of the "Greatest Generation". CDR Muryl R. Cole, U.S. Navy ret. Shed earth's surly bonds one last time as he journeyed west. The North Dakota native and longtime (53 years) Scottsdale resident was born June 21, 1922.

 

In September 1942, he completed training in the military's V-5 program to become a Navy pilot. Following additional flight training, he was sent overseas and assigned to VB-103 in Dunkeswell, England flying submarine patrol in PB4Y-1s. CDR Cole flew a total of sixty-three missions.

 

From the island of Guam in the Pacific post WWII he flew eleven PB4Y-2 missions into the center of typhoons to determine their strength. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he flew a naval rescue mission to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. CDR Cole retired from the Navy with more than thirty-three years of service. In civilian life, he was an airline captain with Republic Airlines and its predecessors. He retired on June 21, 1982, following a thirty-four year nine-month airline career with more than 35,000 hours of flight time.

 

Remaining on this earth are his beloved devoted wife of 51 years, Chris. A daughter, Peggy Mashburn of Las Vegas. Two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. All are heirs to this patriotic American's legacy. Blue Skies and Tailwinds.
