December 17, 1939 – December 11, 2024

Today we remember the life of Golden Wings member retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Jim Bomar, age 84.  Jim joined Delta Air Lines 08-12-1966.  He is survived by his wife Lyn, and by his son Spencer (Christine) and his granddaughters Madison and Lindsey.

James Spencer Bomar III

Arrangements entrusted to H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel

 

It is with great sadness the family of James "Jim" Spencer Bomar III announces the loss of their beloved husband, father and grandfather. He died peacefully on December 11, 2024. Jim was born on December 17, 1939 in Columbia, SC to James S. and Helen Collins Bomar of Douglasville, GA. At the age of 6, Jim’s father died, and the family moved back to the old home place in Rico, GA.

 

He graduated from Campbell of Fairburn High School ‘57, where he was voted ‘Best All Around Student’ by Bishop and Poe. He was very active in the Georgia 4-H Club, and won two national first place awards, earning him a scholarship to The Georgia Institute of Technology and a trip to meet President Dwight D. Eisenhower at The White House.

 

While at Tech, he became President of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and enrolled in the first Air Force Flight ROTC Program. This earned him a commission as a 2LT commission in the USAF and began his life-long passion for flying the blue skies. Upon graduating from flight school, he was first assigned to Sculthorpe AFB in England, and then to the 36 Fighter-Bomber Wing at Bitburg AFB in Germany.

 

In 1966 Jim resigned his commission with a rank of Captain, and thus began a career with Delta Air Lines. His career at Delta spanned over 32 years, where he flew as Captain of a wide variety of aircraft, eventually becoming Director of Flight Standards. After retiring from Delta, he was a founding member of DP3, an organization advocating for and aiding fellow retired Delta pilots.

 

Jim was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Lyn of 62 years, a loving and ever supporting Father to his son Spencer, daughter-in-law Christine, and the two apples of his eyes, granddaughters Madison and Lindsey.

 

He will be missed by countless people whose lives he touched; by his family for his unyielding support and wisdom, his friends for his easy laugh, cordiality and constant willingness to help. And by strangers, who were blessed to witness his constant kindness and humanity.

 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 15 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at H.M. Patterson & Son - Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Jim will be laid to rest in a private family service at Georgia National Cemetery.
