Hubert fell in love with
flying as a young boy and got his private pilot's license at age 14……………..
Hubert Slaton Lipscomb Jr. joined Delta Air Lines 06-03-1957
and was based MSY and Atlanta.
Hubert is survived by
all five daughters and six granddaughters (affectionately known as Hubert's
Harem), along with 10 great grandchildren -- when boys were finally brought
into the mix!
Services for Captain Lipscomb will take place
September 4th in Covington LA.

Hubert Lipscomb Obituary
Hubert Slaton Lipscomb Jr tipped his airline captain's hat and ascended
on his final flight into the skies Sunday morning, August 30, 2026. He was held
in love and went to sleep peacefully in his home, surrounded by family. For
those who knew him, his final week of goodbyes were true to form -- to the very
end, Hubert was still entertaining everyone with his incredible stories and
infectious laugh.
Hubert fell in love with flying as a young boy and got his private pilot's
license at age 14. He was a much-loved airline legend during his 37 year career
with Delta Airlines, his second family, from which he quite reluctantly retired
at the required age of 60 as the #1 international pilot. He proudly served in
the Mississippi Air National Guard for 17 years. Locally, he was an adored
championship tennis player, downtown Covington tennis shop owner, and ran the
pro tennis shops at local country clubs. Hubert had two other loves: Camp Bon
Ton in DuLac, where the good times rolled with his lifelong Mississippi friends
and Rebel Aviation, his hangar at the Hammond airport where he built and flew a
christen eagle aerobatic bi-plane and a replica P-51 Thunder Mustang. Hubert
married Joy June Jacobs of DeLand, FL on November 1, 1958. They were married
for 35 years and had five daughters: Beth Maryberry, Lee Manguno (Bart),
Virginia Lipscomb, Catherine Lipscomb, Annie Lipscomb (John Duda). Joy passed
away in February of 1993. For many years following Joy's death, Hubert enjoyed
the companionship of Nancy Ussery, another longtime member of the Delta
Airlines family. Hubert is survived by all five daughters and six
granddaughters (affectionately known as Hubert's Harem), along with 10 great
grandchildren -- when boys were finally brought into the mix!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northshore Humane Society, one of
Hubert's favorite local charities.
Hubert's family invites you to attend his service at E.J. Fielding Funeral
Home, 2260 West 21st Avenue, Covington, LA on
Friday, September 4, 2026, at 1:00 pm and the visitation starts at 12:00 pm
until service time. A private family burial will take place on Saturday
in Jackson, MS.
