NWA Capt. Victor ‘Vic’ Kleinsteuber

July 8, 1936 ~ March 19, 2013

Victor Willis Kleinsteuber, Jr., age 76 of Monticello, died at his residenceTuesday, March 19, 2013, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 4PM to 7PM at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 E. Broadway, Monticello. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, April 18, at 11 AM at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 9300 Jason Ave. NE, Monticello. Private interment at Ft. Snelling at a later date. Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello.

Vic was born on July 8, 1936, to Victor, Sr. and Elsie C. (Roth) Kleinsteuber Vik in Minneapolis, MN. He later enjoyed a good relationship with his stepfather Alfred Vik. Vic grew up in the Kenwood School District of Minneapolis. After graduation from West High School, he attended the University of MN. He started Navy flight training in January of 1958 and received his wings in 1959. His first squadron was Airborne Early Warning Eleven in Argentia, Newfoundland. As a Lieutenant Junior Grade he qualified as a Patrol Plane Commander on the WV-2 aircraft in 1062. He then was transferred to New Iberia, LA to be an instructor in Navy advanced multi-engine training. Following that assignment he was transferred to Fleet Tactical Support Squadron Forty in Norfolk, VA where he made numerous landings aboard aircraft carriers. In 1966 he joined Northwest Airlines. Vic flew the Electra, Boeing 727, 707, DC-10 and the Boeing 747. He retired in 1996 as a Captain on the Boeing 747-400. Vic was active in the Monticello Rotary Chapter, Retired Northwest Airline Pilots Association, Great Lakes Cruising Association and the Navy Tail Hook Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, creating stained glass art, dogs, and loved cruising his boat on the Great Lakes.

Victor is survived by his loving, long-time companion, Judy Summers; sons Victor III, Andrew (Kristen); 5 grandchildren Trista, Victor IV, and Kayla Kleinsteuber, and Emily and Andrew Mell; brothers Charles (Karen) and Walter (Francis) Kleinsteuber; 5 nieces and 1 nephew; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Victor Sr. and Elsie (Roth) Kleinsteuber Vik; and stepfather Alfred Vik.

 We have received word with news of the passing of retired NWA pilot and active RNPA member/officer Captain Victor Willis Kleinsteuber Jr. For many months now, Captain Kleinsteuber had been fighting pancreatic cancer and dealing with the effects of chemo treatments. Born/raised in Minnesota, he was 76 years of age at the time of his passing March 19th.  

Captain Kleinsteuber hired on with Northwest 07-05-1966 

and retired in 1996 at the mandatory age 60.

Arrangements are not yet known. Obituary and further information will be posted when received.
