In Memory of WA/DL Captain Franklin Harlowe (Frank) Mayne

Uncle Frank, as he was affectionately known by his nieces and their friends, flew West on April 16, 2022.  He was 81. While still in college, Captain Mayne learned to fly at Pacific States Aviation in Concord, California, and continued to fly for them during the early sixties.  He began his airline career at Western Airlines in 1966 and retired from Delta in 2000. In between his airline trips, Captain Mayne enjoyed decades  as a lab instructor in Marine Biology

at Diablo Valley College.

In keeping with his wishes, Captain Mayne’s funeral was private/family only.

By Frank’s side, at his funeral were:

His Sister, Ginny Glavinovich, nieces Natalie Glavinovich, Chelsea McClure and

Chelsea’s husband Kevin McClure.

Following a stroke, Frank remained partially paralyzed for nearly two years. His Sister, Ginny wants those who maintained contact with him during that unbearably lonely time to know that hearing from his fellow pilots served to boost his morale immeasurably.

Condolences may be addressed to:

  1. I knew Frank at WAL. I was hired 6 months after him. He was way senior to me. He got to be a Captain long before me. He also worked longer than me because of being younger. I don't recall ever speaking to him, but I certainly knew who he was. I just want to wish his survivors all the best in their loss. (Fred Nielson)

  3. Sincerest condolences to your family. Frank was an outstanding aviator and he was active in many Air Line Pilot issues. He and I spent a lot of time in Washington lobbying for pilot safety issues. Frank helped to facilitate the Western and Delta Pilot merger which greatly benefited both airlines. "Remember the Mayne" was the catchy phrase he used at our bi-annual conclaves. I do remember the Mayne.

  4. What a pilot advocate. We are better off today because of him. His sense of humor and story telling abilities made him a welcome sight. Intelligent, wise and even keeled, his opinion was always sought and welcomed. Rest In Peace.

  5. I have known Frank for over 40 years. I was shocked to hear of his passing. He like a big brother to me. We met at DVC while I was a student and I was inspired by him to join the team of teaching assistants there. He helped me learn to fly and I had the pleasure of being able to fly with him early on. He also helped me with getting a job flying for Delta after I left the Air Force. He was family to me. And I will miss him dearly. One of the nicest and intelligent guys I’ve ever met. I learned a lot from him. My condolences to his family. Rest In Peace Frank.

  6. Frank was a mentor to me when I was a Civil Air Patrol cadet in the 1990s. He kindly invited me to an ALPA event at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum when I was a college student in Washington, D.C. He was such a kind man. I'm sorry we lost touch and to hear of his passing.
