WA/DL Carol Wakefield, wife of WA/DL Capt. Tony Wakefield

Carol Ann Wakefield, wife of retired WA/DL Capt. A.L."Tony" Wakefield

Obituary  https://www.vistafh.com/obituaries/carol-wakefield

Carol Ann Wakefield died peacefully on the evening of August 31, 2026, at Intermountain Health St. George Regional Hospital, with her husband and five of her seven children at her side. She was 83.

She was born on Valentine's Day, 1943, in Mobile, Alabama, the second of Fred and Marion Davis's four daughters. She grew up mostly in Mobile, with several years in Chateauroux, France, where her father worked as a civilian employee at the Air Force base. After high school, while working as an X-ray technician and taking classes through the University of Alabama, she met a Naval aviation cadet in flight training across the bay in Pensacola named Anthony L. Wakefield. They fell in love quickly and completely and married on December 19, 1964.

They began their family at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, where sons Glenn and Todd were born. Daughter Sherry arrived a few years later, after Tony left the Navy and the family settled in Southern California. There they built a home, a career in the airline industry, and an orchard of 800 avocado trees. In 1979 they more than doubled their family, adopting three siblings - Paul, Matt, and Amy - and also taking in their adult older brother, Mark, as their own. In 1984 they moved the family to Summit County, Utah, where Carol spent the next thirty years before she and Tony moved to St. George in retirement.

Carol carried the grace of the Southern belle she was raised to be and the grit of the Western mountain woman she became. She never met a stranger. She would welcome anyone into her home as family, sometimes to the surprise and even the chagrin of her actual family – though every one of us has since come to wish we could be more like her in that regard. She was a mama bear in defense of her children, and if the moment called for it, she could tell someone exactly where to go - but so sweetly that they would look forward to the trip.

She and Tony were inseparable for nearly 62 years, as husband and wife and as best friends. Their travels took them to very nearly every continent ocean, much of it by ship. Through five years with COPD, the illness that ultimately took her home to her Maker, she was slow to complain and quick to name what she was grateful for.

If Carol lived by a single principle, it was that love conquers all. She met eight decades ·of whatever life sent her by throwing love at it - at the problem, and at everyone in the room while she worked on it. Her life is the argument for that principle.

She is survived by her husband, Tony; her sisters, Edna and Judy; her children, Mark (Elva), Glenn (Trista), Paul (Elizabeth), Todd (Paige), Matt, Sherry (Fred), and Amy; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Patty, and two grandchildren.

Mary Virginia Felini Obituary

Mary Virginia Austin Felini September 28, 1937 – September 13, 2025

Mary Felini passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on September 13, 2025, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family after a courageous battle with cancer. In her final weeks, her children gathered closely, holding her hand and saying their goodbyes—a reflection of the deep love she poured into her family throughout her life.

Mary was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on September 28, 1937. She often reflected fondly on her childhood there, recalling with delight that she “walked where George Washington walked.” Her family later moved to Havelock, North Carolina, where she graduated from New Bern High School, and eventually settled in Pensacola, Florida. It was on Pensacola Beach, more than sixty years ago, that Mary met her beloved husband, William “Bill” Felini, a Marine aviator stationed at the Naval Air Station. Their meeting sparked a love story that grew into six decades of marriage, a family of five children, and a life built on faith, devotion, and strength.

Mary’s greatest joy was found in her role as wife, mother, and grandmother. While Bill’s career as a Delta Airlines pilot often carried him far from home, she anchored their household with prayer, encouragement, and an unshakable love for God. She instilled in her children the values of faith, perseverance, and compassion, lessons that continue to echo through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alongside her devotion to family, Mary built a remarkable 43-year career in real estate. She served as President of the Irving Board of Realtors and the Irving Chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors, where she was honored as “Woman of the Year” in 1985. Her leadership extended to the state and national levels, where she served as Chairman of the Texas State Chapter of the Women’s Council of Realtors and as Governor of its National Chapter. At one time, she was the only certified instructor in Texas qualified to teach Real Estate Ethics, a role she carried out with integrity and dedication. These accomplishments were a reflection of her character—diligent, principled, and committed to serving others.

Yet, for all her honors and accolades, Mary’s proudest achievements were never measured in titles. They were found in the strength of her marriage, the faith of her children, and the countless lives she touched with kindness, wisdom, and prayer. She carried herself with humility and grace, always pointing others toward God as the true source of strength and purpose.

Though she believed she would one day be the one to care for her husband in their later years, her only sorrow was leaving him behind. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is now free from pain, reunited with her Savior, and watching lovingly over those she cherished so deeply.

Mary was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed until the day when all who love the Lord are reunited with her in Heaven.

She is survived by her devoted husband, William Robert Felini; her sister, Joyce Austin Keeley of Arkansas; her five children: Linda Felini-Smith (James), Karen Boozer (Kenneth), Lisa Brandon (Bo), Louis Felini (Martha), and Michael Felini (Cynda); 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William Russell Austin and Jessie Lillian Berry Austin, and her brothers, William “Billy” Austin, Kenneth Wayne Austin, and Cecil Austin.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations in honor of Mary to be made to First Methodist Church of Irving, Texas https://www.irvingfirst.org/giving

 Linda Carol Malone Obituary

Linda Carol Malone (born Smith), 79, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, surrounded by family.

Linda was born on August 8, 1947, in Los Angeles, California, where she grew up until the age of sixteen when her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. When she showed up at Washington Highschool, it was love at first sight for Dan Malone. “I’m going to marry that girl someday,” crossed his mind as he watched her cross the courtyard. The two were married in 1968 and shared 58 years of marriage, living their vows of love to the fullest, through sickness and in health. Their marriage was a model to so many of what true devotion looks like. Their love overflowed.

Linda earned a B.A. in Home-Ec and worked as a flight stewardess before devoting herself fully to her family and home. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, nourished with good food and lots of chat, and her home was always open to friends and family. She could make a friend anywhere and usually did! She was an avid tennis player, an enthusiastic shopper, and a talented knitter and seamstress who loved making handmade gifts especially for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gatherings with her Bridge Club (formed with neighborhood women back in the early 80’s… though we’re not sure how much Bridge was actually played!) and cherished time with her many friends.

Linda's faith and love for Jesus was central to her life. She was raised in a Christian home and remained dedicated to the Christian faith throughout her life, reading her Bible every morning, and pouring herself out in love for others. She was a long-time member of Scottsdale Bible Church and was recently chrismated in the Orthodox Christian Church.

Her battle with ALS began last summer, robbing her of the ability to talk, eat, and eventually move. She bore this horrendous disease with grace and strength. Her deep inner beauty and strong faith radiated peace. In her final moments she continued to be an inspiration.

Linda is survived by her husband, Dan; her son, Kevin; her daughter, Karie Johnson, and spouse, Adam; her daughter, Megan Gilbert, and spouse, Gaelan; and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Darrell and Marilyn.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy, and her parents, Barbara and Russell Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 17, 12:30 p.m. at Hansen Mortuary Chapel on 7th street, followed by a gathering at Dan and Linda’s home.

In place of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of the Valley and ALS AZ.

WAL Sherrie” Wilson-Walton, wife of WA/DL Capt. Mike Walton

Sharon “Sherrie” Wilson-Walton, wife of WA/DL Capt. Mike Walton

May 22, 1942 – August 15, 2026

PCN memorial site

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/phoenix-az/sharon-walton-13007334

On August 15, 2026, I said goodbye to the love of my life. Sherrie passed away peacefully and without pain in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a brief but heroic battle with bone cancer. For 58 wonderful years, she was my co-pilot, my strength, and my best friend.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Sherrie attended Drake University before following her adventurous spirit into aviation at age 20. She began as a stewardess for Braniff Airways in Dallas and later moved to Seattle to fly the Lockheed Constellation for Pacific Northern Airlines to Alaska, a land and people she grew to love deeply. That was where our story truly began—on my very first flight with PNA to Kodiak, Alaska. I fell in love with her grace and love for life. We were married in Hawaii in July 1968, embarking on a life rich in family, service, and extraordinary adventure. Sherrie remained in the airline industry until retiring from Western Airlines in 1975.

Sherrie’s heart belonged entirely to her family. Together, we adopted our two beautiful daughters from Thailand and a son from Iowa. She immersed herself in every moment of their lives—cheering at soccer games, sitting through cheerleading practices, helping with homework, and walking the fairways during Jr. PGA tournaments. When our family grew, she poured that same fierce, tender love into being a grandmother to Victoria, John, Peyton, Cameron, Karson, Paris, and Blake.

In 1975, we moved to Scottsdale, living along a green golf course before settling in Cave Creek in 1987 so Sherrie could have her horses. She had a wonderful gift for thoughtful gestures. For our second wedding anniversary, she bought me a Stearman aircraft project—a labor of love we worked on and flew together for 44 years, later a gold placer claim in Arizona.

Sherrie had a deep, protective love for animals and children. She spent 17 years with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Search and Rescue, frequently riding her Mustang, Cheyenne, through the trails of the National Forest north of Phoenix. Her courage saved lives: she provided emergency medical aid to a woman crushed under a horse and heroically located a young boy lost in northern Arizona during the dead of winter.

Even with a full heart at home, she never stopped learning or giving back. Sherrie earned a degree in Archaeology, volunteered with the Phoenix Art Museum, Kiwanis of Carefree, and the BLM Mustang program, and shared the world with us on family journeys across America, Thailand, Korea, Europe, Russia, and England.

Sherrie had an extraordinary knack for making lifelong friends wherever she stepped. She is survived by her husband, Michael; daughters Kimberly Emminger and Tanya (Jack) Maixner; and her seven grandchildren. She lived fully, loved deeply, and left a legacy of courage, warmth, and joy that will stay with us forever.

Rick Ward Obituary

Mr. Richard Lee Ward, "Rick," age 61, of Griffin, passed away June 20, 2026, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Rick grew up in Pike County and graduated from Pike County High School in 1983. He continued his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

He had a love for all things aviation. His dad instilled the love of flight from a very early age. On his 16th birthday, he obtained his driver's license and then with the help of his instructor Barbara Kitchens, he soloed in a Cub, Cessna 150, Cherokee 140, Piper Tomahawk, and a Cessna 172.

Rick was married to the love of his life Julie Ward for over 17 years. Rick and Julie spent their entire marriage flying in their own general aviation planes, with the Beech 18 being his favorite. They attended many airshows, traveled to fun, spontaneous destinations, and truly enjoyed the wonderful life they were blessed with. Rick was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, friend, and man of faith whose kindness, strength, and love touched countless lives. He spent his career doing what he loved most-flying. As a commercial airline pilot since 1998, Rick proudly flew the Boeing 717 and 737, carrying passengers safely across the skies while living out his lifelong passion for aviation. Ironically, Rick left this earth bound for heaven at 7:37 PM.

Those who knew Rick will remember his warm smile, generous heart, steady presence, and the joy he found in sharing his love of flight with others. Rick lived with purpose, integrity, and gratitude. Above all, Rick cherished his family. He is survived by the love of his life, Julie. He was the son of Iris Jeanine Ward and the late Richard Dwight "Dick" Ward. He was the brother of sisters Terri Patterson (John) and Tammy Deluzio (Greg). He was a dedicated and loving father to his children: Gavin Ward, Preston Ward, Lindsey McClosky (Todd), Taylor Yoder (Josh), and Mitchell Bargo (Kelly). His most cherished title was Pappy Rick. He is survived by his 9 grandchildren: Aubrey, Reese, Camryn, and Addison McClosky, Layton, Bryn, and Gannon Yoder, Maren and Brook Bargo. He is survived by his nephews Taylor Hardy, Daniel Deluzio, and Jake Patterson and his niece Allie Patterson. His love, guidance, and unwavering support will remain a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

While our hearts are broken by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that this is not goodbye. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we know that Rick has been welcomed into his heavenly home and that we will see him again.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23

Rick's memory will forever live on in the stories shared, the lives he touched, and every airplane that crosses the sky as we look to the heavens.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Williamson Methodist Church, 20 2nd District Road, Williamson. Funeral services will be held following the viewing at 2 p.m. Pastor Billy Beard will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williamson Methodist Church College Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 83, Williamson, GA, 30292, in memory of Rick.

Obituary

Donna Helen Robb passed away March 29, 2026… just three months shy of her 90th birthday and only 79 days shy of her 70th wedding anniversary with her Prince, Jon Robb. Those were the only things Donna Robb was shy of - she led an adventurous and joyful life, filled with family, faith, friendship and love.

Born June 24, 1936 in Columbus, Nebraska, she had a happy childhood with her parents, Lilly and Billy Jarecki, and her older sister, Betty. Graduating from St. Bonaventure High School in 1954, she married Jon, her high school sweetheart, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus in 1956. Their faith was strong, guiding them and growing through all their years.

As Jon served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, Donna served as his partner in every sense. They started their married life in France, which began travels to bases around the world. Along the way, they were blessed with four sons and four daughters. She called us “The Original Ten.” The family bloomed to include current count of 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

A dedicated wife and mother, Donna created a loving and supportive home wherever they landed, be it France, Okinawa, or coast to coast from California to New Hampshire with too many places to mention in between. A proud military wife, Mom kept the home fires warmly burning as many assignments took Dad away for extended periods. They made lifelong friends in the service, relationships strong to this day.

After leaving USAF active duty in 1968, they settled in Old Cottage Grove, Minnesota, as Jon started a new career with Northwest Airlines. An active family kept Donna hopping, seamlessly coordinating school, athletic and social calendars. We were always proud to share how at one point Mom had six children with the oldest being four (4, 3, 2, 2, 1 and a newborn). That statement was always followed by “and that was before disposable diapers.” Being a wonderful mother was her calling; she knew no other way.

At retirement, they moved to Pequot Lakes, MN for their next chapter. She loved living on Upper Hay Lake for thirty years with her sweetheart, the longest time they had lived anywhere. Friends and family were always as welcome as the loons up at da lake. A thoughtful hostess, her sincere goal was your enjoyment. At that, she was an overachiever.

Inspired from her mother… Mom embodied what became our family tradition of stating “Love You Round and Round and Never Stop,” symbolized by a swirl. One of her many gifts was that of unconditional love. She openly shared her pride in you, always making one feel noticed and special.

If you knew Donna Robb, you loved her. If you crossed her path, you’d remember her. Genuinely interested in you and what was going on in your life, she championed the art of conversation. Dad always said she could talk a half hour to a wrong number. Mom made and kept friends easily and everywhere, nurturing those relationships all her life.

She was amusing and creative. A believable teller of tall tales, many of her followers accepted her stories of being wedding fillers, of her mud wrestling career, of 7-Up Camp, of turning into a pumpkin and more! If you ever attended a “Sing for your Supper,” you’ll know its unique spirit. Her enthusiasm always inspired bonding over entertainment and good food. Mom so enjoyed friendly games of cards and dominoes around the kitchen table, staking your first round with quarters waiting on your bed. While not everyone’s mother is skilled at playing craps or poker in a casino - ours was. Impressive, this gal could hold her own anywhere. Mom was smart, respected, and fun to be with.

This small-town Nebraska girl travelled the world, visiting every state, plus countless countries on all seven continents. This past winter, she worked hard through health complications to earn what proved to be her final trip. As she had her whole life, Mom embraced the food, fun and card games of a family gathering in Biloxi, MS one last time. As they were to begin their journey back home to Pequot, her health took a turn for the worse. On March 29, 2026, she embarked on a different journey, one she always called “The Big Trip.” Being a person of faith, believing in an eternal life in heaven, she knew her parents, sister, two sons, David and Patrick, and her daughter-in-law Lana, would be waiting to welcome her.

Mom is survived and will be so missed by Mr. Wonderful, Jon Robb, their children: Kate (and Steve) Sames of Aurora, CO; Cindy (and Dave) Devlin of Chugiak, AK; Michael (and Suzanne) Robb of Minneapolis, MN; Mary (and Greg) Robb of Willow Park, TX; Jennifer (and Tom) Sandstrom of Wayzata, MN; Jonny Robb of Thompsons Station, TN and daughters-in-law Sharon Robb of Weaverville, NC; Jenny Robb of Meadview, AZ. As beloved Gramma, then GG, she felt blessed to have been gifted a long and happy life to know the children of her children’s children.

In lieu of flowers, the Family suggests that donations, in her name, may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. (StJude.org/donate)

We will keep Mom forever in our hearts and actions. As it should be, her life will be celebrated on Sunday, June 14 at the Wayzata American Legion Post 118, located at 949 Wayzata Blvd. We hope you will join us there between 3 - 6pm.

Caroline Plyler Obituary

Caroline Whitehead Plyler died peacefully on Feb. 28, 2026, after a courageous battle against Parkinson's disease, surrounded by family on St. Simons Island.

Born Oct. 23, 1940, in Cuthbert, Caroline grew up in Blakely, where she was the second of three children of Dr. Earnest Pace Whitehead Sr. and Mary Grist Whitehead.

Caroline, the 1956 Early County Peanut Queen, graduated from Early County High School before attending the University of Georgia where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and graduated with a B.A. in English Literature.

During her time in Athens, Caroline met the love of her life, Dwight Moody Plyler Jr., whom she married in 1963. After Dwight completed Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida, they were stationed in Texas, Florida, and Maine before settling in Coral Gables, Florida, where Dwight began his commercial aviation career with National Airlines. Caroline spent her time actively living in Coral Gables where she was a member of Beaux Arts at the Lowe Art Museum, the Junior League of Miami, the Riviera Country Club, Coral Gables United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Trustees at Palmer Trinity School. Caroline had many dear friends there and relished the colorful cosmopolitan life of Miami.

After raising their children Mary Ouida and Dwight III, Caroline and Dwight relocated with Pan American Airways to West Berlin, Germany, in 1986. During their five years in Berlin, they witnessed firsthand the fall of the Berlin Wall while traveling extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. For the remainder of her life, Caroline cherished the many close friendships developed within the Pan Am and Berlin communities.

Shortly after their return to the United States, Caroline and Dwight moved to St. Simons Island, followed by many close friends from south Florida (the Miami Mafia) establishing a mini-Miami coterie on the island. After moving to St. Simons, she became a member of the Junior League of the Golden Isles, Cherokee Garden Club, St. Simons Presbyterian Church and Sea Island Club.

Caroline was an avid bridge player and during her time living on St. Simons, she ultimately achieved the level of Bronze Life Master.

Tall, blonde, stylish, famously beautiful and always the best dressed and bejeweled, Caroline was also a superb cook. She honed her legendary lifelong hospitality skills as a woman who, with equal ease, could throw a large glamorous candlelit dinner party or a spontaneous magazine-worthy picnic after trekking to the ruins of an old German castle. From elaborate international concoctions to the simplest Southern fare, nothing was too challenging.

Caroline is survived by Dwight, her husband of 63 years; daughter, Mary Ouida Plyler of Miami; son, Dwight Moody Plyler III (Anna) of Atlanta; grandchildren, Patricia and Monica Vega and Caroline and Elizabeth Plyler; great-granddaughter, Gigi Tomlin; and brother, James Grist Whitehead (Stephanie). She was preceded in death by her brother, Earnest Pace Whitehead Jr.

Caroline's family would like to extend their loving gratitude to Caroline's caregivers, Veronica Cain and Lachelle James, who were with her over the final 18 months of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Caroline's memory be honored with a donation to the Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association:

https://www.apdaparkinson.org/community/georgia/ways-give-ga/donate/

A family burial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in Blakely, followed by a celebration of life with family and friends at 2 p.m. March 9 at St. Simons Presbyterian Church.

He is also survived by his brother Jim Vanderhorst (wife, Chris) and his sisters, Carol Jones (late husband, Ron), Theresa Seewer (husband, Denny), and Jane Vanderhorst.

Thomas was the oldest of five children. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in Horticulture at The Ohio State University and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. Upon his graduation Tom attended Officer's Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island and was commissioned as a Flight Officer in 1966. He then trained in flight school at Naval Air Station Pensacola, where he met his wife, Patsy. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a pilot of P-2 Neptunes and P-3 Orions. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in December 1971. He then spent 30 years as a Delta Air Lines pilot and loved every minute of it.

He and Patsy settled in Newnan, GA, where they lovingly raised their three children. Thomas loved God and lived a life that exemplified such by teaching Bible studies, serving his church, counseling others, and sharing the gospel whenever he could. He was a member at Grace New Hope in Lawrenceville, GA.

He took great pride in establishing a hobby farm from the ground up, finding joy in the daily work and the life it brought to the land. From harvesting pecans, planting an orchard, to raising emus – you'd often find him practicing his strong work ethic and love of the outdoors on the farm. After retirement he continued gardening and found joy teaching and loving on his grandkids.

Judith Abrams Obituary

Judy Dudley Abrams, beloved child of God, was received into the presence of heaven on Friday, December 13, 2025. She and her family were residents of Decatur/Stone Mountain for the past 53 years. Judy was born March 1, 1941, in Opelika, Alabama to her parents: Charles Glenn Dudley and Emma Wooddy Dudley. She grew up in the most idyllic setting of extended family and close small-town living. She attended Northside School and graduated from Opelika High School, Class of 1959. She earned a degree in Education from Auburn University, where she also met her future husband, Aubray. Their lives together were shaped by his pilot service in the U.S. Air Force as well as with Delta Air Lines.

Judy was an encourager and a collector of friends. Childhood friends from Opelika remained steadfast relationships of her life, as well as those she collected living in Texas, Kansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia. She was noted for remembering birthdays among 31 Dudley first cousins and numerous friends. She stayed in touch and she showed up in times of need.

Judy was among the first women in the Baptist community of Atlanta to be elected a deacon at First Baptist Church of Decatur. She and Aubray served faithfully for many years in the church they loved. For several years this included teaching a large class of young married couples. The loving bonds formed continued as they served as mentors for years into the future. Later Judy joined the Verdery Sunday School Class and many of her closest lifelong friendships developed with this group.

Home was important to Judy, and she filled it with beauty and welcoming comfort. Her gift of gardening was recognized by visitors and the neighborhood alike. She enjoyed and developed close friendships as a member of The Smoke Rise Morning Glories Garden Club.

Judy's family included her parents and husband, who predeceased her. Beloved family includes two children: Charles Abrams (Susan) of Kennesaw and Catherine Abrams of Decatur, five grandchildren: Amanda Abrams Caldwell (Zachary), Beth Abrams, Christopher Choi, David Choi, and Hannah Choi, two great-grandchildren: Aubrey Caldwell and William Caldwell and one brother, Dr. William am Dudley as well as numerous Dudley and Wooddy cousins.

A Service of the Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 19 th in the Chapel of Decatur First Baptist Church at 1:00 PM with Reverend Mark Green, Dr. David Jordan, and Dr. William Dudley officiating. A burial service will be held in January in Opelika, AL in the family cemetery.

Obituary For Sylvia Hodnett Gex

Monday evening, Oct 27, 2025, after a challenging recovery from a recent surgery, Sylvia Hodnett Gex passed away after 92 years traveling around the sun, picked up stakes on the rock we call earth and moved into her Heavenly Father’s house. We have no doubt that her arrival was met with welcoming hugs of family and loved ones already in residence and of course our Lord & Savior!

Sylvia’s legacy is carried forward by her three most precious loves, her three sons – Jack, Brook and Danny Gex. Jack and wife Nancy Jo and their blended family, Jack’s children Bobby and wife Viktoria Gex, Ben and wife Darby Gex, and Hannah Gex. As well as Nancy Jo’s children Sara (Goldie) and husband Matt Lee, Pam Goldie, and Mark and Samantha Goldie. Brook’s children Casey, Julia and Eileen Gex. And Danny and wife Michelle (Lamy) Gex and their four daughters Emily, Elizabeth, Abigail and Caroline Gex. Sister, Linda Hodnett Wright. She was also promoted to Great Grandmother by Carson Gex (Ben & Darby), by Savana and Barret Lee (Matt & Sara), by Lydia Adams (Pam Goldie) and most recently by Bonnie Goldie (Mark & Samantha).

And her other family, ‘The Girls’; her dearest of girlfriends, the girls of the West Point High School class of 1952.

Sylvia Hodnett Gex, was born Sylvia Ann Fowler on Sep 14, 1933, in Gadsden, Alabama to Harold and Ona Fowler. She spent her first 7 years living on a farm outside of Centre, Alabama playing in the family General Store, picking cotton by hand on the land farmed and share cropped and seeing the family run the local cotton gin. She had fond memories of helping her father around the farm with tools, falling in a creek when she slipped off a log and helping her mother sort all the drawers full of buttons in the general store. However, fate decided she was to grow up in a different location. In the summer of 1940, in a driving rainstorm the family was involved in a tragic auto accident. Her 3-month-old baby sister, Linda Fowler (Aunt Linda), was rescued having been safely thrown free of the accident. Unfortunately, her mother was killed in the wreck and her father died a few days later in the hospital. Over the next few months forces beyond explanation were working to bring her and her sister to a new home. In September of 1940 mom became Sylvia Ann Hodnett and Linda Hodnett when they were adopted by a loving Christian couple, Jack and Vivian Hodnett of West Point, Georgia.

Belle/Georgia Peach, and lifelong friend of her 28 high school classmates. She grew up in the First United Methodist Church of West Point and loved her mom and dad immensely. She attended West Point High School where she was a Cheer Leader for two years. The family vacationed in Daytona Beach, Florida and for many summers Sylvia attended Camp Dixie for Girls in North Georgia. Upon high school graduation in 1952 she continued her love of adventures by hopping a train and traveling halfway across the country attending Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri. And if traveling across country for two years of college was not enough or not an indicator, a few years after graduation from Stevens College in 1954 she became a Stewardess working for Delta Airlines in 1957.

During her years with Delta, she traveled! She vacationed with her sister staying in Jamaica and then in Havana, Cuba (before things went sideways!). She traveled to Spain and experienced the bullfights. She journeyed across the South flying in a DC-3 – asking with her Southern charm: ‘Coffee or Tea’? They even landed at the wrong airport and had to lean out the window of the plane and ask ‘Where are we?’ (true story)! She was based in New Orleans for several years living on Bourbon Street, seeing French Quarter history and enjoying great Cajun food! While at Delta Airlines she volunteered, trained and was selected as a one of Delta Airlines’ first “Jet Age” flight attendants. Mom was one of 12 girls to fly the inaugural Atlanta, Miami, Chicago routes on the new DC-8 jets. They took the girls to New York to be fitted with new uniforms designed by Hollywood and Academy Award winning costume designer, Edith Head. Mom loved her years of flying. Yet those were to change as she fell hopelessly in love with a dashing flyboy named Robert Brooking Gex III who also worked at Delta.

Sylvia and Bob were married in August of 1962. They had three children: Hardy Jackson Hodnett Gex (63), Lewis Brooking Kempner Gex (65) and Robert William Daniel Gex (67). The years of living at 319 Hickory Post Lane were for the most part idyllic and small town through the 1960’s and 1970’s. There were cocktail dinner parties, trips to New Orleans with the neighbors, summer trips to the grand parents in Georgia, and a million kids birthday parties, homemade ice cream, and years of sporting events where she earned the nickname, Mama Gex. In the summer of 1978, she lost the love of her life as Bob Gex passed away. Summoning courage she charged ahead continuing the task of raising her three boys through school and off to graduation from college. Many childhood friends, Spartan classmates and teammates, and a group of Aggie friends (Bob’s alma mater) would always be a part of their lives.

In 1995 Sylvia earned her greatest promotion and took on her most favorite of titles: Grammy. Over the next 10 years she was blessed with 10 grandchildren. She would dote, spoil, comfort, entertain, did I say spoil, and love without question or limits those 10 grand kids – 3 boys and 7 girls until this very day. The spoiling rotten time was most evident around the numerous birthdays throughout the year. With cakes, famous homemade peach ice cream – only made with Georgia Peaches – because they were better and she was one – and the birthday shopping trip with Grammy (the girls loved the shopping day with Grammy)! The greatest meal, of historic proportion in feast and memories was always Thanksgiving Dinner. But the grandest display of family love and the Spirit of Christmas morning gathering of the grandkids with Grammy to open presents.

This is but a snap shot of her legacy. The hope is that the Moma Gex and Grammy love that was, and still is, leaps out from these words and that just at least a little goes home with the reader. Welcome to the family.
