Kenneth Layne (Ken) Johnson (1932 - 2012)

Kenneth Layne (Ken) Johnson passed away quietly at his Palm Desert home on March 25, 2012 at the age of 79. Kenny, as he was affectionately called by his wife of 31 years, Sheryl Mills Johnson, was born on April 16, 1932 in Ogden, Utah to Vernal & Thelma Johnson. Ken is survived by his wife, Sheryl, six children, Nancy Whitlock, Utah, David K Johnson, Utah, Sandra Staub, North Carolina, Laura Cappelletti, Camarillo, Calif., Scott Mills, San Francisco and Kristin Mills, Maui, Hawaii. Also surviving are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. In addition, Ken leaves four sisters and two brothers. Son, Dennis Johnson, and two brothers predeceased him. After residing in Rancho Mirage, Calif., for 29 years, Sheryl and Ken recently moved to Palm Desert where Ken continued to be "The Captain of his own Ship!" Retiring as a Captain from Western Airlines in 1986 where he spent the previous 25 years, and prior to that with Hawaiian Airlines, Ken always prided himself with his love of the airways. With a twinkle in his China Blue eyes he would talk about his love of the US Navy, of which he entered in 1950 and where he attained AD3 (Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class) and the devout love of airplanes! Ken was honorably discharged from the US Navy, 1954, in San Ysidro, Calif. where he continued his Flight Instruction. Captain Ken's quick wit and total sense of humor will be missed on Thursday mornings by his wingmen at the Old Bold Pilots Club, as well as his innumerable friends at the Palm Springs

Word has been received of the passing of WA/DL pilot Captain Ken Johnson.  Born at Ogden, Utah on April 16, 1932 Kenneth Layne Johnson was 79 years of age at the time of his passing March 25, 2012.  Ken hired on with Western 02-24-1961 and was based LAX.  Ken had been battling cancer for some time now and had recently been under the care of hospice.  He is survived by his wife Sheryl.  Personal condolences may be sent to Ken’s family at the home address

Elks Club where he enjoyed "cutting the rug". Along with his love of flying and dancing, Kenny was an avid golfer, fisherman, tennis player - all of these led him to the outdoors of which he totally enjoyed. Sheryl has asked in lieu of flowers donations be made to Odyssey Hospice, 71-777 San Jacinto St. Suite 102, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 for the kind and loving care they consistently gave during Ken's valiant fight against cancer. Services are private.

DL dispatcher Allen B. Epps

Word has reached us that retired Delta Air Lines dispatcher Allen Epps has passed away.  Born December 31, 1920 Allen B. Epps was 91 years of age at the time of his passing March 9, 2012.  I have not seen a complete obituary but I believe Allen was born/raised in Mississippi.  On March 27, 1944 Allen enlisted in the service and was a WWII veteran.  Allen hired on with Delta in June 1957.  I believe Allen was preceded in death by wife Joreine in July of 2005.  Survived by extended family members, personal condolences may be sent to the family c/o Allen’s niece Libby Cassidy,

Captain Carlton Harvey Cornelius Hall

SHREVEPORT, LA - Carlton Harvey Cornelius Hall, 63, of Shreveport, LA passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2012 after bravely fighting a short battle with cancer.

Visitation was held at Osborn Funeral Home on Monday, March 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27 at Broadmoor Baptist Church,

with Dr. Tom Harrison officiating.

Carlton was born in Louisville, KY and was a resident of Shreveport, LA, for more than 35 years. He was an active member of Broadmoor Baptist Church and the Steadfast Sunday School Class. He sang in the choir as well as the Good News Quartet. He graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in Professional Aviation in 1973, where he met his lovely wife, Vicky, while they were both members of the LA Tech Skydiving team. He was a commercial airline pilot for more than 30 years and retired as Captain from Northwest Airlines. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and restoring classic cars.

Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend George Milton Hall and Donna Bonnett Hall, and one brother, George Milton Carlton Hall. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Vicky Colvin Hall, and three children, Heather Hall Vescovo and husband, Stephen of Memphis, TN, Carlton Harvey Cornelius Hall, Jr. (Neil) of Shreveport, LA, and Josef Scott Colvin Hall of Calhoun, LA, two grandchildren, the lights of his life- Lilliana and Trace Vescovo, two sisters, Catherine Hall DalNogare and husband Tony of Kalispell, MT, and Alisa Hall Hutchins and husband Robert of Hull, GA, and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Danny Bozeman, Gus Butterfield, Jetson Allen, Cliff Ogden, Paul Flores and Jeff Watson.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Broadmoor Baptist Church Mission Ministry or Broadmoor Baptist Church Music Ministry or your favorite Cancer Research Charity, will be appreciated.

Gray B. Newman , 92, of Peabody and formerly of Wakefield died on Saturday February 4 at the Renaissance Gardens in Peabody. Born in Penns Grove, NJ on June 4, 1919 the son of the late Joseph E. and Mabel (Bowen) Newman. Mr. Newman was a raised and educated in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and had been a Wakefield resident for since 1945. A the age of 17 he earned a commercial pilots license and went on to be a pilot for Northeast and Pan American Airlines and eventually retired from Delta Airlines. In 1968 Mr. Newman made world wide news when his Delta Aircraft was hijacked to Cuba by 3 Cuban nationals on a flight that originated in Boston. He was also a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Transport Command. He was a member of the Private Pilots Association and a Charter member of the Quannapowitt Yacht Club. Mr. Newman was the husband of the late Marjorie (Murray). He was the father of Deborah N. Stallworth and her husband Carlton Wattie of Atlanta, GA, Jonathan G. Newman and his wife Sherry of Hope Valley, RI and Christopher G. Newman and his wife Deborah of Wakefield . He was the brother of the late Margaret Haas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Rachel, Rebecca, Adam, Joshua, Elizabeth, Timothy and Benjamin Newman and his great grandson Tyler. A Memorial Service will be held at the Centre Congregational Church, 5 Summer St., Lynnfield on Thursday at 10 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave. Wakefield on Wednesday from 4 – 8 P.M. Private interment will be held at the Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield. Memorial contributions may be made to the North East Animal Shelter 347 Highland Ave. Salem, MA 01970.

WINSLOW - John Isaac Ashbaugh, 90, of Winslow, Ark., passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at his home. He was born May 13, 1921, in Washington, D.C., to John Isaac Ashbaugh and Ruth (Padgett) Ashbaugh.

John joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and served as a pilot during World War II. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve and retired in 1971 as a lieutenant colonel.

John was a pilot for Delta Airlines for 23 years.

He lived in Georgia, Texas, and retired to Winslow, Ark., to raise Morgan horses and Jersey cows. He had a wide array of interests including animals, shopping, collecting, reading, gardening and wood carving.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank and Alec Ashbaugh and Mary Ashbaugh Bobo; by his granddaughter, Cherie Michelle Vanlandingham; and grandson, Jeb Stuart Ashbaugh.

He is survived by three sons, John Isaac Ashbaugh of Mount Pleasant, N.C., Russell George Ashbaugh of Concord, N.C., and John Marc Ashbaugh of Winslow, Ark.; three daughters, Sherry Allene Blondeau of Senoia, Ga., Ruth Ashbaugh Covin of Flower Mound, Texas, and Elizabeth Jolley Ashbaugh of West Fork, Ark.; 18 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
