Notification with the passing of Northwest pilot/instructor John L. Whisenand, age 61.  John joined Northwest Airlines 07-07-1980.  John's obituary indicates that he is survived by his wife Tracey and their sons.  Services were held September 12th in Montana.

John Lewis Whisenand, 61, of Whitefish, formerly of Eagan, Minnesota, passed away at home on Sept. 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family after a two-year battle with cancer.

John is survived by his parents, Fred and Coral; his loving wife of 41 years, Tracey; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Shawn and Bridgette, Paul and Sonja, Thomas, and David and Katie; five grandchildren; and his loving brother and sisters, Fritz, Barbara and Nancy.

John was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 1954 and graduated from Williston High School in 1972. After graduating from the University of North Dakota in 1977, John flew for OK Aviation and Real West Airlines in Bismarck. In 1981, John was hired by Northwest Airlines where he spent 25 years flying and instructing on the B727, B757, A320 and A330 aircraft. After retiring in 2007, John continued his instructing career with CAE Inc.

John and Tracey moved to Whitefish in 2008 where they loved to golf, ski, raft and hike in the surrounding mountains.

John was most proud of his four sons, who through hard work earned college degrees and are very successful in their careers. Shawn is an airline pilot, Paul a manager at an energy company, Thomas owns a brewery, and David is an attorney. He also adored his grandchildren, Alyssa, Macy, Beck, Nolan and Arthur.

John would like to thank those who cared for him during his illness, especially Drs. Harris, Anderes and Carlburg, physician's assistant Carrie Thompson and nurse Lois.

John would also like to thank Bible Study Fellowship, his spiritual mentor Rick Drenk of Minneapolis, and Pastors John and Ralph of Christ Lutheran Church whose love and prayers blessed him over the last two years. John's faith in Christ was strong, and he wants everyone to know he is alive and well in heaven.

Finally, he would like to thank God for the many incredible sunrises, sunsets, and awe-inspiring displays of stars he was so blessed to see during night flights over the Atlantic. As the Bible says in the Psalms, "The heavens declare the glory of God."

A service for John will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glacier National Park Conservancy.

Thomas Samuel Giefer, of Poulsbo, WA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 22, 2015. He was born on October 18, 1939 in St. Paul, Minnesota and was 75 years of age.

Reinig, Lester, age 91, passed away peacefully in his own home, on September 10, 2015. "Les" was born May 2, 1924 in Portsmouth, Iowa and led an inspiring life full of adventure, national pride and self-sacrifice. Les served is country with distinction in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. He traveled and served in Africa, India and the Philippines; a far cry from his small hometown of Garner, Iowa. Les and his family moved to Arizona in 1954 to start his airline pilot career with Bonanza Airlines. After retiring from the airlines, he shared his powerful love for learning and exploration with his family. Never slowing down, he began bicycling in the annual Ragbrai Race across Iowa into his late 60's.While visiting natural and cultural sights, he gave his family a lifelong love for travel. Les was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Wilma (1930-2004), his brothers Russ, Don and Kenneth, and sister Darlene. He is survived by daughter, Pam and three sons, Alan (Graciela), John (Denise) and Karl (Elizabeth). Also, his brother, James (Darlene), sister RoseAnn and sister-in-law Mary. He is survived by five grandchildren, Alex (Casey), Michelle (Brad), Michael, Kaitlyn, Cousteau, Christopher and Sawyer. Additionally, he was blessed with six beautiful great-grandchildren; Tyler, Liliana, Anthony, Ethan, Andrew and Alessandra. Capt. Gary Lakin's obituary..............................
Resided in Virginia Beach, VA     

Gary Edward Lakin, 75, passed away September 4, 2015 in his home.

Gary was born August 4, 1940, in Portsmouth, VA, to Walter and Iris Lakin. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959 and from East Carolina University in 1963. He went into the Air Force pilot training program and married Julia Ann Parsons of Candor, NC, December 1964, the same year he graduated. They moved to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, where both his daughters were born. Gary flew KC-135 aircrafts and made three trips to Southeast Asia where he served in the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force in 1969, the family moved to Miami, FL, and Gary took a job as a pilot with National Airlines. In 1980 National was purchased by Pan Am and Gary was transferred to John F. Kennedy airport in New York. The family moved to Va. Beach in 1983. Pan Am was purchased by Delta Air Lines and Gary flew for Delta until he retired.

 

Gary loved boating, fishing, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. He and Julia were world travelers and enjoyed over 40 cruises together. Gary will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and his fun-loving spirit.

 

Gary is survived by his wife, Julia; and daughters, Kimberly L. Catt of Va. Beach, Debora L. Ragland and husband, Lee, of Williamsburg; mother, Iris B. Lakin of Va. Beach, and grandson Pierce Lakin Catt. He is predeceased by his father, Walter Capps Lakin.

 

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel.
