Obituary for Mr. Earl E. Evans Jr.

Earl E. Evans Jr., born September 5, 1946 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was the eldest of three boys born to Earl and Mildred Evans.


Earl, who was affectionately known as “Buddy,” graduated in 1963 from Townsend Park High School in Pine Bluff. In 1967, he received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Nebraska. He joined the Navy in 1968 and was honorably discharged in 1972. He moved to the Bay Area in 1972 and began working for Western Airlines as a First-Pilot. Over time, Earl became a Captain Pilot and retired from Delta Airlines in 2004.

In 1990, Earl married his wife, Beatrice Evans in which they enjoyed a beautiful life together. He was a fun loving and giving person whose laugh and smile was so infectious that he made everyone else around him laugh. He lived life and always made sure his family did as well through travelling, boating, and any adventure he could think of. Earl shared his passion for the Lord as leader for the Bible Study Fellowship Group in Danville and Discussion Leader for the Community Bible Study Group in Oakland. Earl also had a passion for golf, and enjoyed beating his buddies (and sometimes his wife) on the course.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mildred Evans, and brother Harvey Evans. He is survived by his wife Beatrice Evans, son Earl Evans III, daughters Nichelle Evans, Lauren Evans, Stephanie Bradley (Tom), Roslyn Thomas (Dwayne), grandchildren Cameron Markham, Mackenzie Bradley, Keegan Bradley, Meghan Bradley, Makayla Thomas and Dwayne Thomas Jr., brother Homer Evans, Aunts Jacqueline Smith and Julie Grant, Uncle Dr. Homer Myles, Nephews Jonathan and Homer Evans Jr., Niece Jacqueline Evans, Great Niece Lauren, Great Nephews Caleb and Noah and a host of cousins and friends.

Notification with the passing of retired Western Airlines pilot Captain Robert 'Bob' Alton Ballard, age 93.  Captain Ballard joined Western Airlines 03-12-1951 and retired with Western Airlines based SLC.

Obituary..................Robert Alton Ballard (1922 - 2016)
Robert "Bob" Alton Ballard passed away on July 18, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. He was born October 21, 1922 to Orlando Day and Minnie Rideout Ballard in Draper, Utah.
After high school, he joined the Navy to serve in World War II. Upon his graduation from Naval Flight Training, he married Berneita "Betty" Tout in Corpus Christi, Texas. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
After his stateside training, he went to war in early 1945 flying the F-6F Hellcat in the US Pacific Fleet, Fighting Squadron 24 (VF-24) based on the USS Santee. He fought as a fighter pilot and photo recon specialist in the Philippines, Formosa (now Taiwan), the East China Sea and the Battle of Okinawa. During a mission over the Ryukyu Islands where his Hellcat was damaged by ground fire, he survived by ditching his aircraft in the sea and was rescued by PBN aircraft and recovered to the USS Eldorado. For his service, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 5 gold stars.
Bob began his career as a pilot with Western Airlines in 1951. Western later became Delta Airlines. He retired after 30 plus years.
Betty passed away on February 2, 1971. Bob later married Maye-Lynn Gon on September 25, 1976. They divorced on March 24, 1987. In 1999, Bob moved to Thailand. There he later married Buakhiang "Nok" Lakhumiek on May 21, 2013.
Survived by his daughter Joan McIllece and son Robert James "Jim" Ballard, 8 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by son in law Stanley Roy McIllece, daughter in law Judy Lynn Peterson Ballard.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, UT. A visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services. Online condolences welcomed at larkincares.com

Word has been received with the passing of retired WA/DL pilot Capt. Dan Courtney, nearing his 79th birthday.  Dan is the father of LAX DL 717 F/O Lans Courtney.  Dan joined Western Airlines 06-03-1968 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1997, based 030/SLC.

I regret to inform you of the passing of Retired Delta Captain Daniel H. Courtney, father of LAX 717 F/O Lans Courtney.  Captain Daniel Courtney was hired by Western Airlines in June 1968 and retired as a Salt Lake City based 767 Captain in October 1997.  There will be a private family service in his hometown of Loomis, CA later this week.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 William R. Erwin of Metairie passed away at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 79 years old. A private service was held on Friday, Oct. 7 at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.

 

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Bill was the only child of Roy and Laura (nee Hromodka) Erwin. After graduating from Kent State University where he’d been a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he served his country as a pilot in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve. In 1965 he signed on with Delta Airlines selecting New Orleans as his base and proceeded to live his dream job for nearly 32 years until retirement. Passengers on his flights were frequently entertained with details and interesting facts about the areas over which they were flying. His return home often included foods from the cities of his layovers—sourdough from San Francisco; Nathan’s hotdogs or Carnegie Deli sandwiches from New York; lobsters from Maine. As a result of his love for his profession, he was affectionately known as “Captain Billy” by many of his friends and acquaintances.

 

Bill’s personality was larger than life and affected almost everyone who knew him. He was passionate about his family, becoming greatly involved with many of his children’s hobbies over the years. He was equally passionate about his adopted city; despite having been a transplant, Bill’s love for all that is New Orleans was unmatched and infectious. Like all true New Orleanians, Bill was a long-suffering and devoted Saints fan, taking part as a loyal season ticket holder for decades. He also had a unique love for Tulane’s Green Wave, attending their games for decades as well.

 

Bill loved the many festivals New Orleans featured and was a daily and annual fixture in the Economy Hall tent of Jazz Fest for nearly two decades. When it came to Mardi Gras, he was a member of Metairie’s now-defunct Krewe of Aquila, transitioning to the Krewe of Bacchus in which he was a member for many years. He also was a proud officer with Pete Fountain’s Half-Fast Walking Club, eventually joined by his son, marching with the group for nearly 20 years until 2014.

 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents as well as his lifelong friend and fraternity brother, Gary Glasser, of Perrysburg, Ohio. Bill is, without a doubt, enjoying a beer and box of Popeye’s with his friend, laughing over old times right now.

 

Bill leaves behind his devoted and loving wife, Norma (nee Buckley), as well as his son David of Jefferson, LA; eldest daughter, Karen Rodman and her husband Tedd of Southborough, Mass.; and youngest daughter, Christine, of Moreland Hills, Ohio. He also leaves behind the three grandchildren he adored: Aphra Erwin and fiancé Justin Kingsley of Lake Charles, La., and Jack and Lindsey Rodman of Southborough, Mass.
