News has been received with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain Dennis Edward Swanson, nearing his 80th birthday.

Captain Swanson joined Northwest Airlines 08-07-1967 and retired with Northwest in 1997.  He is survived by his wife Joanne, their children and grandchildren.

Captain Swanson’s obituary notes that military graveside services will be held May 2nd at Tahoma National Cemetery in Washington state.   There will be a Celebration of Life at Denny’s sawmill on May 13th at 2 pm.....all are welcome to attend.

Dennis Edward Swanson, age 79, a retired Northwest Airlines captain “F​lew ​W​est” for a final check on April 19, 2017

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joann, and their four children: Mike (Jackie) Swanson, Toni Swanson, Kellie (Pat) Kutkey, and Erin (Rob) Dickinson, and brothers: John (Kathy) and Jim (Monica). Also 8 grandchildren: Dan, Logan (Tasia), Corrie (David), Zach, McKenna, Anna, Colton, and Pearl, as well as 6 great-grandchildren: Morgan, Kahlin, Kamdyn, Braxton, Lily, and Marley, and a whole fan club of beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Ron, sister Jean Ann, and parents Irene and Gar.

Born in Ione, Oregon in 1937, he grew up on the family wheat ranch. His love of flying was born at an early age. As a kid, Dennis would design and construct model airplanes, then employ various barn cats as pilots, a story which may be truer in our imaginations than in reality. He attended the University of Portland, joined the Air Force ROTC cadet program, and upon graduation in 1959 was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the US Air Force, making his childhood dream of piloting aircraft a reality.

After his discharge from the Air Force in 1966, Dennis flew for Northwest Orient Airlines and retired as a 747 captain in 1997. He spent his retirement doing good for his community and his family. From using his sawmill to cut historically accurate lumber for the repair of the Mary Olson barn, to longtime Kiwanis member, to substitute teaching at the Muckleshoot Tribal School, to many years of Saturdays delivering food with his grandchildren for the Auburn Food Bank, Dennis never turned down an opportunity to say, “Yes, I can help.”

In honor of Dennis, we encourage you to make saying, “Yes, I can help” a part of your lives too. Perform an act of kindness, give time to a volunteer cause, or donate to a charity of your choice.

At his request, a private family funeral mass was held on April 25th, his birthday. A military graveside service will be held May 2nd at Tahoma National Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life at Denny’s sawmill on May 13th beginning at 2 pm, where all are welcome.

It is my onerous duty to inform you that NWA pilot Dennis Swanson passed away at 1030AM, Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Dennis would be 80 years old next Tuesday. He was hired by NWA on August 07, 1967.

Please forgive my delay with news of the passing of Northwest/Delta pilot Captain Bruce Philip Eaton, age 64.  Captain Eaton joined Northwest Airlines 02-22-1985 and was currently flying for Delta Air Lines, based DTW.  He had most recently resided in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Bruce Philip Eaton, born December 28, 1952 , passed away on April 20th, after a hard fought  battle with cancer.  An avid flier, he served in the military as a Naval aviator, where he attained the rank of Commander.  He enjoyed 32 years as a Captain for both Northwest and Delta Airlines. News has been received with the passing of retired Western Airlines pilot Captain Orman Edmond LaVoie, age 92.  Captain LaVoie joined Western Airlines 03-19-1951 and was based Denver and Salt Lake City I believe.

 In Memory of Orman E LaVoie

– Orman E. LaVoie, age 92, died early Saturday morning 4/15/17, at Village Health Care Center. Orman is a veteran of World War II. He joined the Army Airforce in June ’44. While stationed in Burma India, he logged 1,000 hours as a flight officer in the ferry command that flew supplies over the Burma Hump (hazardous air route across the Himalaya Mountains). Upon returning from the military, he joined Johnson Flying Service, a contractor for the Forrest Service. In 1951, he joined Western Airlines, and retired from Delta as a captain on a Boeing 707 in 1976. In twenty-five years of service for the airlines, he experienced two bomb threats on board, a lightning bolt through the fuselage, and after sliding down an icy runway, bringing an aircraft to a stop at the edge of a cliff.

Orman was an avid skier well into his 70’s and in his spare time, enjoyed building and remodeling homes, building a golf course and building a propane fueled Skybolt.

He is pre-deceased by his grandson, Michael and son, Mark. He is survived by 1 sister, 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Services are planned for June at the Western Montana State Veteran Cemetery. Cremation is under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Condolences and memories may be left for the family at  www.sunsetfuneralhomecemetery.com

News has reached us with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain John Ernest Bridges Jr., age 89.  Captain Bridges joined Delta Air Lines 01-02-1956 and retired with Delta in 1987, based Atlanta.  He is survived by his wife Patricia ‘Pat’, their children and grandchildren.

John Ernest Bridges, age 89 of Stone Mountain, GA passed away on April 10, 2017. John was born on May 2, 1927 in Rock Hill, SC where he grew up and attended Rock Hill High School. He served in the US Navy from 1944-1946 and the US Air Force from 1950-1954. He joined Delta Air Lines in 1956 where he was a pilot for almost 32 years. He retired as captain in 1987. An avid fisherman, John spent much of his spare time deep sea fishing in Key Largo, FL.

John is survived by his wife, Patricia Bridges, sons Bill and Bob Bridges, daughters-in-law Sarah and Laurie Bridges, daughter and son-in-law Julie Bridges Perkins and Phil Perkins, seven grandchildren, Katie and Rachel Perkins, Marshall, Emily, Ansley, Jennifer, and Julia Bridges, nieces Anne Fields and Jane Fields Chastain, and nephew John Fields.

A military service will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, GA, with a reception to follow at the Bridges’ home in Stone Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project in memory of John E. Bridges.

Obituary..............Paul J. Sheehy, 75, of Dawsonville passed away Thursday April 6, 2017.

Born August 23, 1941 in Independence, Missouri to the late Almer and Vivian Sheehy, he had lived in Dawson County over 20 years having moved from Cobb County. Mr. Sheehy retired as a pilot for Delta Airlines with 28 years of service. He served in the U. S. Air Force over 12 years where he flew 100 missions in Vietnam. Paul enjoyed running, snow skiing, golf and volunteering in various ESL programs. A member of the Grace Presbyterian Church choir, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Rick Sheehy.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Mary Ann Cox Sheehy, Dawsonville; daughters and sons in law, Lisa Sheehy, Gainesville, GA, Karen and Alex Pastos, Gainesville, FL, Carolyn and Mattison Barnes, Cumming, Anna and Gerard Sample, Cave Creek, AZ; grandchildren, Gus Pastos, Owen Pastos, Bo Barnes, Noah Barnes, John Barnes, Luke Sample, Mary Alexa Sample; brother and sister in law, David and Ingrid Sheehy, St. Louis, MO.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday April 11, 2017 at 10 o’clock at Grace Presbyterian Church. Rev. David Jordan will officiate. Interment services will follow at Georgia National Cemetery at 1 o’clock.
