STAFFORD, Jr., Edwin Metts

Edwin Metts Stafford, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 15, 2017. Edwin was born in Ludowici, Georgia on May 2,1941 to Edwin and Madeira Stafford and graduated in 1959 from Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, GA. Achieving his dream of flying, he completed over 300 missions in Vietnam as an Army Caribou pilot and retired as a 747 captain for Northwest Airlines. Edwin served in many roles with the Airline Pilots Association to help improve the airline pilot profession. However, he always looked to his sons as his greatest accomplishment. A great father, pilot and friend the void left by his passing is not easily filled. Edwin is survived by his wife Jean, sons Clay and Jake and their families, and sisters Ila Moody and Twila Sexton. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Obituary..............................

Age 92, Don passed away peacefully at his home in Prior Lake. Born in St. Paul on April 28, 1925, Don joined the Army Air Corp while still attending Monroe High School, where he had many fond memories acting in school plays, playing hockey with friends, and singing in the school choir. After graduation, Don was sent to Mount Union College and trained as a fighter pilot flying P-51's. After the war, he attended Macalester College and the University of Minnesota, and joined North Central Airlines in 1956 as an airline pilot. He also remained active in the Air Force Reserves, later becoming a full Colonel and Commander of the 934th Tactical Airlift Group. Don would always say he loved flying so much he would have done it for free, and gave his military training credit for his many accomplishments in life. Don married his lovely wife MaryAnn in 1948, was married nearly seventy years, and raised five children in Bloomington. Don retired from Northwest Airlines in 1985. His favorite activities in retirement were ocean fishing, playing tennis, and spending time with his family at his homes in Prior Lake and Key Largo, Florida. He is survived by his wife MaryAnn, his son Thomas (Janet), Robert (Lucy), Janet (Christian) Yoder, Christine (Lloyd) Samuelson, and Joanne (John) Pahl, along with eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 15601 Maple Island Road, Burnsville, MN. Visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Word has reached our group with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain Winthrop Lee Bradshaw Jr., age 83.  He is survived by his children, grand and great grandchildren.  Captain Bradshaw joined Northwest Airlines 10-30-1958.  He had most recently resided in Forest Lake MN.  Online memories may be shared on the funeral home website at http://www.mattsonfuneralhome.com/  A celebration of his life will be held August 26th at 11:00 AM, at the Red Wing Soaring Association hanger located at the Osceola WI airport.

Bradshaw, Winthrop Lee Jr. Age 83 of Columbus and Forest Lake, passed away peacefully of old age on July 27th, 2017. Captain Lee has made his final departure to points unknown. He was well known and respected throughout the aviation community, which was such a big part of his life. Lee was born on December 17, 1933 to Lee Sr. and Billie Yates in Maryland, and was close to his step-father, Emerson Phillips. He joined the USAF in 1951 and left as an aviation cadet in 1955, and then went to Parks College of Aeronautical Technology in St. Louis and graduated in 1958 with a BS in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. Lee was hired by Northwest Airlines in October 1958 and moved to Minnesota, and lived here ever since. In 1974, while flying a Pitts Special biplane doing aerobatics at an airshow, Lee had a terrible crash and was informed he wouldn't walk again, much less fly. In a very determined way, he proved them wrong. Starting with gliding, he worked his way back to the captain's seat and finished his career with Northwest, flying 747's on routes such as the Orient and back, retiring in 1993 after 35 years. Lee shared his passion of flying with others by founding St. Croix Sport Aviation, teaching and giving rides in gliders, seaplanes, aerobatic aircraft, taildraggers, gyroplanes, and balloons. He could fly just about anything and held all seven FAA instructor's ratings at one time, and was also a FAA examiner. Lee was generous with his knowledge and skill, influencing many people throughout his aviation career, even teaching his children to fly gliders. Along with flying, Lee loved travel. This included flying his own plane all over America from Alaska to Maine, down to Florida, and many times to Paducah KY. He has been to all seven continents, including flying over the outback in Australia, an African safari, and 2 trips to Antarctica. If he could, he would pitch a tent or sleep in a hanger, rather than a hotel. He loved the outdoors almost as much as flying. He brought his children camping from a young age on, and has made about 75 trips to the BWCA. He could paddle and steer a canoe quite proficiently, and portage with the best of them. He would often go to his land near Mora just to sit by the campfire and read, many times sleeping out under the stars (or in the snow). Being an avid reader, Lee had an extensive library heavy in aviation and war. He knew that history well, and often remarked being born on the anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight. He taught himself Spanish, and liked listening to music, cranking up the Boston Pops and whistling along. He played the harmonica. Lee said at one point that he has no room for "what he hasn't done" or "wished I did", which is "the way it should be!" (He pointed out that he may have skipped the airshow.) Survived by children, Madonna, Rebecca (Bob), Martin, Susanna (Sean), Gregory, Christopher (Marta), Nicholas, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and brothers, Bane and Jim Phillips. Preceded in death by sons, Phillip, Douglas, and Andrew. A celebration of his life will be held on August 26th at the Red Wing Soaring Association hanger located at the Osceola WI airport, starting at 11 am. Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Byron Hugh LeFevre, age 87.  Captain LeFevre joined Delta Air Lines 05-02-1956 and retired with Delta in August 1988, based Atlanta.  He is survived by his wife Vera, their children and grandchildren.

Byron Hugh LeFevre, of Dahlonega, passed away on June 19, 2017. Byron was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on July 11, 1929. He was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and a member of Omicron Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

After graduation, Byron was a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force serving in the 46th Fighter Interceptor Squadron during the Korean Conflict. Upon leaving the Air Force, he was a captain with Delta Air Lines, where he flew from 1956 through 1988. Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Emile C. and Jessie Craven LeFevre; and his sister, Emelia Johnson of Edmond, Oklahoma. Byron is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vera Lyons LeFevre of Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Susan LeFevre of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Pat LeFevre of Douglasville; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Trent Conner of Dahlonega; granddaughter, Ashley (Allen) Ligon; granddaughter, Jennifer (Alan) Schuetze; grandsons, Scott LeFevre, Richard LeFevre, Michael Conner, Brian (Ally) LeFevre; granddaughter Jillian (Chris) Toombs; and sister, Marilyn Iott of Salem, South Carolina. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel.

Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to North Georgia Church, 74 Dill Lane, Dawsonville, GA 30534; Salvation Army, 603 Atlanta Highway, Gainesville, GA 3050, or to one’s charity of choice.

Peter “Pete” de Lanoy Welles, 73, died peacefully April 29, 2017, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born Jan. 15, 1944, in New York City, the son of the Rt. Rev. Edward R. Welles II and Catharine van Alstyne Welles.

 

Pete attended Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, Conn., and graduated from South Kent School in 1962 and from Long Island University in 1966. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a naval aviator from 1968 to 1972.

 

He married his wife, Anna Roberts Welles, on Aug. 12, 1972, in Minden, La.

 

Pete lived in Florida for most of his adult life, receiving his Navy AOCS training in Pensacola. He lived in Miami and Fort Myers for most of his later career as a commercial airline pilot. Pete worked for more than 30 years as a pilot for Delta Air Lines, ending his career as a Boeing 767 captain flying routes to Europe, South America and India.

 

His passion was sailing. He enjoyed sailing his Bullseye Silver with the Southwest Harbor Fleet. One of his great thrills was winning the Hayward Cup as crew for his son, Peter Jr., and later with niece Laura Welles.

 

From age 5, Pete spent all but one of his summers (during the Vietnam War) in Manset. He enjoyed hiking all the trails of Mount Desert Island. He was proud to have reached the summit of Mount Katahdin with his family and to have climbed Mount Rainier with his son. He enjoyed attending St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor — the church where he was confirmed. Pete also was a member of Iona-Hope Episcopal Church in Fort Myers, Fla., where he served on the Vestry and as a member of the Stewardship Committee.

 

Pete was predeceased by his son, Peter Jr.; siblings Katrina Swanson, Harriet Foresman and Edward R. Welles III and nephew William Swanson.

 

In addition to his wife of 44 years, Anna, Pete is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Welles Shahnavaz, her husband, Nikrad, and their son, Andrew, of Atlanta. His is also survived by nephews Olof Swanson and Will Welles and nieces Catharine McKibbin, Susan Peterson and Laura Welles.

 

A funeral service is planned Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor. Rev. Tim Fleck will officiate. Pete’s ashes will be interred in the Newman Cemetery in Manset.
