News has reached us with the passing of military veteran retired West Coast/Hughes Airwest (NWA) pilot Captain Harold ‘Loren’ Hoffman, age 81.  Captain Hoffman joined West Coast Airlines 11-06-1967.  He is survived by his wife Barbara, their children and grandchildren, plus many other friends and family members.

Obituary.............................HAROLD LOREN HOFFMAN 

Harold 'Loren' Hoffman, born July 19, 1937 in Spokane, WA, died August 9, 2018 in Vancouver, WA after suffering from brain cancer.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Thelma Hoffman of Spokane; and his mother and father-in- law, Roy and Mazie Alderman of Spokane.

Loren is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara, his sons, John and Steve Hoffman of Portland, OR; his daughter, Laurel Spagnolo of Ridgefield, WA; his son, James and wife Rachel of Seattle, WA; his sister, Linda Hickling of Ocean Shores; nine grandchildren, Jenny, Jessica, Jamie, Alexandria, and Elijah Hoffman, Nicora Gardner, Adria Cays, Jacob and Angelo Spagnolo; eleven great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends far and wide.

Loren attended Rogers High School and Gonzaga University in Spokane, later graduating from EWU in Cheney, WA.

Loren and Barbara married in 1958.

Loren joined the Air National Guard in 1954 and became an Officer in 1959.

The family moved to Vancouver, WA in 1968. Loren was attached to the Oregon Air National Guard and piloted fighter jets for many years. He flew commercial airlines starting with West Coast Airlines and retired from Northwest Airlines in 1995.

The couple were active members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and School.

Loren enjoyed motorcycling with his family, his wonderful pets, and entertaining family and friends at Priest Lake, ID.

Loren supported many charities including veterans groups, his church, and local ministries.

Loren was a loving husband, father, grandparent, and friend known for his humor and generosity and will be missed forever.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Vancouver, WA on Saturday, August 18th at 11:00 A.M. Internment at Park Hill Cemetery immediately following. Reception at the family home at 1:30.

Captain Loren Harry Hoffman passed away August 8th at 3:45 AM.

 

He had been dealing with brain cancer for about 10 months and was in a hospice

facility in Vancouver for about a week before Flying West.

 

The family was at his bed side and Barbara said he just simply stopped breathing.

Steve Brent McGaw, Sr., son, brother, husband, uncle, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was born July 10, 1948, in Springfield, IL, and passed suddenly August 9, 2018. He met his wife of 50 years, Brenda Phillips, a fellow Springfield High School graduate, at Steak & Shake while working as a cook and she as a car hop. Steve's journey led him and his family through several distinguished careers including working musician, journeyman plumber, City of Rockford water inspector, and Captain of the Boeing 757/767 at Delta Airlines. He was extremely proud to be a member of the Free Masons, Shriners, and Quiet Birdmen. He cherished racing go karts with his boys while his wife and young daughter played in the pit, contemplating his farm from a tree stand, tinkering in the garage and hangar, and above all, flying. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda (Phillips) McGaw; four children, Steven Jr. (Holly), Bradley (Marla), Brandon (Susan), and Heather (Michael) Simons; twelve grandchildren, Andrew, Breanna, Iann, Abbigail, Jacob, Leeanna, Dallas, Nolan, Natalie, Nash, Asher, and Amelia; and four great-grandchildren, Bentley, Brailey, Huntley, and Grahm. He is preceded in death by his father, Colin McGaw, Jr.; mother, Rita (Halberg) McGaw-Johnson; stepfather, Laverne Johnson; sister, Coleen (McGaw) Brawner; and two precious infant grandbabies.

News has reached our group with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Charles Francis May, age 84.  Captain May joined Delta Air Lines 12-18-1961 and was based DFW.  Services for Captain May were held today in Allen, Texas.

Charles Francis May of Keller, Texas passed away July 27, 2018 at the age of 84.  He was born March 10, 1934 to Frank Henry May and Leola Vietta (Byers) May in Detroit, Michigan.  Charles grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and Topeka, Kansas. After high school, he declined a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles.  He attended Kansas University where he studied theater and was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma.  Charles served his country proudly in the United States Army.  He was a captain for Delta Airlines for 32 years, and authored a book about his career. His hobbies included music, woodworking and fishing.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Lindig of Mount Kisco, New York; son, Charles Allen May and wife Mia Alfonso of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Barbara L. Kraemer and husband Ted of Henderson, Nevada; their mother, Lou Ellen May of Mount Kisco, New York; daughter, Caroline C. Jefferys and husband Bart of Keller, Texas; her mother, Rebecca May-Remsen of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Jason Lindig, Sarah Lindig, Abby Lindig, Kendall Jefferys, Kate Jefferys, Claire Jefferys, Morgan Kraemer, and Macy Kraemer; great-grandchildren, Becca Lindig and Charlie Lindig; siblings, Ron May and wife Gail, Lorraine May and Ed May; and a host of loving family and friends.

 

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Frank May, mother, Leola Vietta Beasley and sister, Joann May.

 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.  Interment is to immediately follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Obituary..............

Joseph Olin Ivey, Jr. passed peacefully into eternity on Monday, July 30, 2018, surrounded by his family. Born in southwest Fulton County on November 26, 1932, to Joseph Olin Ivey and Iva Goolsby Ivey, he graduated from West Fulton High School and attended Georgia Tech. While at Tech he was in the Naval Reserve and then took an active duty commission flying the P-2V Neptune from Alaska, Okinawa, and Hawaii. He traded in his Navy wings for a pair at Delta Airlines in 1956, retiring in 1992 with over 36 years and 25,000 hours with Delta.

 

While still in the Navy, he married his hometown sweetheart, Barbara Boyd. They settled in Fayette County in 1960 and raised their four children in a home so marked by hospitality that it was sometimes called the Ivey Hilton. Joe entered into relationship with God as a young man and as his faith grew he shared the joy of life in Christ with those he encountered. That lifelong passion led to his involvement in founding the Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel and Grace Evangelical Church in the early 70’s. In fact, their home hosted the organizational meetings for both of those ministries. After many years of Joe and Barbara’s life together parenting, grand-parenting and ministering to others through hospitality, Grace Church, FCAP and home Bible studies, Barbara developed Alzheimer’s disease. Joe cared for her faithfully and attentively for ten years before her death in 2006. In an act of grace for which Joe and his children always expressed thanksgiving, Pat Brown of Fayetteville entered his life. They were married in July of 2008 and enjoyed a full and active life together until just days before Joe’s sudden illness.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Barbara Boyd Ivey, and two dear brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Pat Brown Ivey, his sisters Wanslie Poole and Elaine Payne, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law George and Mary Alice Boyd, his four children and spouses: Malia and Chuck Bergstrom, Walter and Rachel Ivey, Suellen and Andres Silva, and Andy and Rowena Ivey; seven grandchildren and spouses: Austin and Holly Bergstrom, Ryan and Chelsea Ivey, Claire and Jeremiah Peery, Bethany Ivey, Elena and Zachary Carden, Evan Ivey, Carlos Ivey; and eight great-grandchildren: Kristen and Daniel Ivey, Jack, Nate, Lucy and Reese Bergstrom, Isaiah and Ender Peery; stepson Seth and Daphne Brown, and many nieces and nephews. We, the family, also marvel and give thanks for the host of friends and colleagues, some surviving and others who proceeded him into heaven, who have enriched Joe’s life and ours.

Obituary...............Suzanne Elizabeth (Karnstedt) Seyfert, longtime resident of Prior Lake, passed away with her family at her side on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at the age of 81.

 

A visitation will be held Friday, July 20 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. with a funeral at 11 a.m. all at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, 3611 North Berens Rd NW, Prior Lake. Suzanne will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Pastor Dan Poffenberger will preside.

 

Memorials are appreciated and will be distributed by the family to Suzanne's favorite charities.

 

On June 13, 1937, in Duluth, parents, Chalmers and Thelma "Jackie" (Hassel) Karnstedt celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Suzanne. She was the oldest of ten children. Due to her father's job with KSTP, the family moved to South Minneapolis and eventually settled in Edina.

 

From a young age, Suzanne was a motivated individual—she helped raise her younger siblings, worked at numerous jobs, and attended Holy Angels Catholic School. Following her high school graduation, Suzanne attended the University of Minnesota where she earned an Associate Degree. Around this time, she began working for Northwest Airlines as a stewardess.

 

Through her job, Suzanne met a pilot, Norman Seyfert. While on a date, Suzanne was carded, and Norman noticed they had the same birthday (five years apart). The two considered this a sign—they were meant for one another. Norman proposed to Suzanne at the Virginian Supper Club in Prescott, WI. Rather than having a formal wedding, the couple eloped on April 3, 1961 to La Paz, Mexico.

 

In 1969, Suzanne and Norman built a home in Prior Lake where they raised their family. Because Norman traveled often, Suzanne was dedicated to her family. She was the quintessential hockey mom, even helping form the Prior Lake Hockey Association. When Norman was home, they loved cooking together. In her free time, Suzanne enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, creative needlework and playing the piano. She was an avid bowler and member of the Fort Snelling Officer's Wives Club.

 

As her children grew, Suzanne returned to work. She was a substitute librarian and secretary for the superintendent for School District 719. A devout woman, Suzanne also volunteered for Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church. She sewed the church banners and served as the church librarian.

 

Despite suffering from COPD, Suzanne was always active. She was a voracious reader, word smith, and completed crosswords with ease. In recent years, she enjoyed playing Words with Friends. It allowed her to connect with other players across the world.

 

Suzanne was a wise, resilient woman who will be loved and missed by her children, Sara (Arne) Skyberg, Samuel Seyfert, Seth Seyfert; sister, Mary Karnstedt; brothers, John Karnstedt, David Karnstedt, Mark (Sharon) Karnstedt, Paul Karnstedt: many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 

Suzanne is greeted in Heaven by her husband, Norman; parents, Cal and Jackie; sisters, Katherine Starrett, Deborah Karnstedt; brothers, Peter Karnstedt, James Karnstedt.
