Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Noel Urban Roehl, age 80.  Captain Roehl joined Delta Air Lines 07-17-1970 and retired with Delta in 2001, based 031/ATL.  Widowed in 2007 with the passing of his wife Delores, Captain Roehl is survived by his children and grandchildren.

Obituary/Tribute :     “A Tribute to My Dad”

Mr. Noel Urban Roehl, age 80, of Griffin, GA passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at his family home also known as "The Rockin' R Ranch" in Pike County.

 

Noel was born in Ortonville, Minnesota on February 20, 1941. Noel grew up on the Roehl family farm, getting up before sunrise in the cold to do the chores before he went to school.  His love of farming would stay with him his entire life. Even into his seventies, he would spend hours on his tractor in the fields or bailing hay for his horses.

 

Noel wore many hats and had many talents. His childhood dream was to be cowboy and he achieved it in spades. He had a true passion for quarter horses and spent years trying to breed and train the perfect cutting horse. Noel was also an excellent craftsman and built his own home from the ground up, often using the shop he built behind his house for the bigger projects.

 

Noel was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served as a Captain in the Vietnam War where he flew C-130's. In 1970, he joined Delta Airlines as a pilot and it became his lifelong career.  He flew various Delta airplanes for 31 years until he retired as a Captain of the MD-11.  Noel saw the world and enjoyed flying. He flew domestically for years before flying internationally but no matter where he went, coming home to the "Rockin R Ranch" was what made him the happiest of all.

 

Noel was a quiet, good and kind man who was a great father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his loving, generous and spunky wife Delores Kluttz Roehl, his parents, Edwin and Elvira Urban Roehl and siblings, Arden Roehl, Giles “Buzz” Roehl, Darrell Roehl, Gloria Graff, and Margaret Roehl.        

He is survived by four children, Kevin O’Keefe (Meridith Williams), Holly Roehl Kammerer (Doug Kammerer), Brad Warren Roehl (Kristen Springer Roehl), Brian Urban Roehl (Leigh Anne Disinger Roehl) and eight grandchildren, Gray Williams, Sophia O’Keefe, Kenton Kammerer, Cally Kammerer, Gavin Roehl, Rylan Roehl, Charlotte Roehl, Caroline Roehl plus several nieces and nephews.       

A graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, September 18, 2021 at 4:30 at Oak Hill Cemetery section H-1, 797 Memorial Drive, Griffin, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/

From friends and colleagues comes word with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Neal Crews Harmon III, age 83.  Captain Harmon joined Delta Air Lines 11-16-1964 and was based Miami.  Son Carl writes that his father passed due to complications of heart disease.  Captain Harmon had most recently resided in the Tampa FL area.

NWA Capt. Richard Madson Brown

WWII veteran, NWA Capt. Richard Madson Brown

January 6, 1922 ~ September 19, 2021

 

From the Northwest pilot group, we have learned of the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain Richard Madson Brown, age 99.  Captain Brown actually first joined Northwest Airlines  04-07-1941, prior to his military service, and retired with Northwest in 1982.  Widowed in 2012 with the passing of his wife Jean, Captain Brown is survived by his children and his grand- and great grandchildren.

Obituary : Richard Madson Brown

Captain Brown took his final flight - home to heaven September 19, 2021. Preceded in death by father and mother, Don & Ruth Brown, wife of 67 years, Jean Brown, daughter Sheila and brothers John, Donald, Bill and Jack.

Born in Minneapolis on January 6, 1922. Moved to Fargo, N.D. at an early age and graduated from high school in 1939. Married his wife Jean Fortin in 1945. Raised four children; Sheila (deceased), Mary (Peter) Studer, John (Dona) Brown, and Dick (Dori) Brown, five grandchildren; Peter (Amie) Studer, Nicholas (Autumn) Studer, Johnathan (Lindsey) Studer, Emily (Matt) Stoddart, Carter Brown, and twelve great grandchildren.

He entered WW II in March of 1942 as an aviation cadet. As the pilot of a twin engine B-26 bomber, he flew 66 missions out of England in 1944, one of which was on D-Day. He retired from the service in June of 1945 and was hired by Northwest Airlines in August 1945. He flew as a pilot for 36 years and retired in 1982 at the age of 60.

Jean and Dick lived in Deephaven Minnesota for 60 years and spent time on Lake Minnetonka winter and summer. Dick loved to play golf, served on the Deephaven City Council for six years, and was on the civil service commission for fifteen years. They moved out of Deephaven in 2011, and the love of his life, Jean, passed away on April 10, 2012. We are grateful to the Lake Minnetonka Shores community and staff, and his special friend, Anne Brosious.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the ICA Food Shelf or the National WASP WWII Museum. Obituary for Jean Fortin Brown

Jean Fortin Brown, Age 89, of Minnetonka, died on April 10, 2012. Graduated from Fargo, ND High School in 1940, attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, then transferred and graduated from Carleton College in 1944 with an Art History major. She married the love of her life, Richard Brown on August 10, 1945. They moved to Minnesota and raised their family in Deephaven where they lived for 60 years. Jean was an active volunteer with the MN Landscape Arboretum, the League of Women Voters, Community Concerns, and was a supporter of Orchestra Hall. She was also an avid bridge player…………………….

Word has reached our group with news of the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain Winn Baker, age 85. We understand that an aneurism was the cause of Winn’s passing.  Captain Baker joined Delta Air Lines 10-28-1963 and retired in 1996, and was based 031/ATL.  He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law plus many more dear family members and friends.  Obituary information for Captain Baker is available online at

Obituary :   Samuel Winn Baker, III took his final flight on Sept. 18, 2021, in Brunswick, Georgia. Winn was a native of Brunswick having been born there on Aug. 10, 1936 to Sam and Fenton Baker. He was also a descendant of the McIntosh family of Darien.

 

Winn’s love of flying began at an early age as his father was a flight instructor, member of the Civil air Patrol and eventually became manager of the Malcom McKinnon Airport. He soloed several airplanes on his 16th birthday enabling him to become a licensed pilot at that time. He still owned one of those planes, a Piper Vagabond, which he continued to fly until his sudden passing. Winn spent many afternoons enjoying the beauty of this area on his flights up and down the coast of Georgia.

 

He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1954 and was a lifelong dedicated alumnus. He attended Georgia Military Academy and the University of Miami. He returned to Brunswick to pursue his love of flying and help his father run Baker Flying Service which later became Golden Isles Aviation. This led to his position as corporate pilot for RJ Reynolds and Dixie Paint.

 

In 1963 Winn began his lifelong career as a Delta pilot flying the DC 6 and DC 7. He later flew the DC 9 and DC 10 and was was a co-pilot on the first 747 Delta put into service. Winn retired as an International Captain of the 767 ER in 1996.

 

In addition he loved flying aerobatics and went on to win many first place awards in the 1970’s. Winn’s other passions included flying antique aircraft and experimental aircraft. From his retirement with Delta until the time of his passing he was first an instructor and demonstration pilot for the Pilatus and went on to fly charters for Gruber Aviation and Lance Toland Association until his passing. On April 27th, 2013 he was inducted into the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame in Warner Robbins as his father had been in 2007.

 

He was very active in the QB’s, the local EAA chapter, and the Southeastern Bonanza Group. He was passionate about the Young Eagles, an organization which encouraged and helped young fliers develop their interest in aviation.

 

Winn was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Fenton; his first wife, Dolores; his son Chip; and Carolyn, his second wife of 42 years who was a retired Delta Flight Attendant. He is survived by his daughter Lois (Candy) Baker and son in law David Sapp; Cousins Joe Tayler of St. Simons and Lila Stevens of Canton, Georgia along with many other first cousins from the Burroughs family on his mother’s side and his close friend Jill McGahan.

 

Vitiation will be held at Edo Miller this Thursday, Sept. 23rd from 12:30 to 2:00 followed by a graveside service at Palmetto Cemetery.
