DL Capt. Charles E. Schmidt Jr.

Word has been received with the passing of retired DL pilot Captain Charles E. Schmidt Jr., age 83.  Captain Schmidt joined Delta Air Lines 07-09-1956 and was based MSY for much of his career, then ATL prior to his retiring.  Captain Schmidt was widowed in 2006 with the passing of his wife Marie.  He had most recently resided at 215 Carondelet St.,  Mandeville  LA 70448-5651.

Funeral services will conducted on Friday, December 6th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Folsom LA.

Obituary.........
Charles “Pike” Emile Schmidt, Jr. returned to his eternal home on Monday, December 2, 2013.
He was born in New Orleans September 23, 1930 and lived in the Folsom area for 55 years.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Marie Bergeron Schmidt and his parents, Charles E. Schmidt, Sr and Angele LeBesque Schmidt.
He is survived by his five daughters; Emily (Paul) Moore, Claire (Mark) Spano, Mary (Ron) Owens, Heidi (Grant) Brown and Patricia Schmidt. He was also survived by nine grandchildren; Cecile, Ellen, Abbie and Caroline Garcia; Lydia, Alex, and Sophie Spano; and Emily and Theresa Owens. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte Schmidt Overton and many loving friends and family.
He attended Tulane University and Louisiana State University. At the age of 26, he was hired with Delta Airlines as a co-pilot trainee. He quickly became a Captain and flew with Delta for 31 years. He loved to fish, garden, hike, read and watch the Saints. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a recipient of the Order of St. Louis IX award.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Friday, December 6, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 11345 St. John Church Rd., Folsom, LA 70437 at 1:00 PM with visitation at Church on Friday from 11:00 AM until service time.
Interment will follow in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery.

 'Her heart knew the faith it took to go the distance, and she now walks with Jesus hand in hand.' Marie A. Bergeron Schmidt returned to heaven after a courageous struggle with ALS on Tuesday, July 25, 2006. She was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was the beloved wife of Charles E. Schmidt Jr. and beloved mother of Emily S. Garcia, Claire S. Spano and spouse Mark, Mary S. Owens and spouse Ronald, Heidi S. Brown and spouse Grant, and Patricia M. Schmidt. She will also be sadly missed by two sisters, Carolyn Bergeron and Mary Magdalene Jones; brother, Joseph W. Bergeron Jr.; nine grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Joseph W. Bergeron Sr. and Alma H. Bergeron. Originally from Luling, she has been a resident of Folsom for the past 43 years. She was a graduate of Hotel Dieu Nursing School. She has been an active parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, devoting many years to its community. She was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of St. John's Ladies' Prayer Group and a faithful servant to Our Blessed Mother. Private Service was held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Folsom.
