___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Subject: NOTIFICATION OF DEATH

Please know that Charles Robert Smith  (C.R.)  died on July 5th, 2015. He suffered greatly for 12 years from multiple types of cancer, and FOUGHT A LONG HARD FIGHT.

I am his ex-wife (he never married again) and the mother of our three children.  Donna Robin Smith, Jeri April Gallegos, and our son,  Charles R. Smith Jr. (deceased 1996).  He has a grandson, David Maestas, and a great grand daughter, Isla Maestas. 4 months old.

I will forward his obituary and any other pertinent information. His Memorial will be held July 26, 2015 in Aurora,Colorado.

C.R. retired as Captain with Delta, after flying for Western, and then continued on when Delta merged with Western Airlines.

We are heartbroken and have questions about insurance, etc, but not at this time. We are taking time to grieve.
My ex and I remained very close, and I helped care for him in my home during his struggle. He died in Aurora Care Center, surrounded by our family.

I would like people to know that CR was a Golden Gloves Champion at 17 yrs of age,  joined the military at 18,  Paratrooper, 82nd Airborne, enlisted and then recalled...was a Miami fireman and during that period, worked for his own pilot license hours, privately while working full time supporting himself.
He was a vocal political activist and wrote the White House on a regular basis! He volunteered in the community, many times played Santa Claus for Head Start, was a foster parent, and together we housed 4 teenagers 2 babies, and 4 toddlers!! LOL not all at the same time! Mentored young boys in sports and gave them guidance through out high school, directing them to make good choices. One of those men now is a Captain for United. Chris Carlson, and CR was like a dad to him! He loved to talk politics and discuss the stock market.
He was a kind neighbor, always shoveling neighbors driveways and was a secret Santa, driving around at Christmas giving away 100 dollar bills to strangers! He ran numerous marathons in Colorado, and logged over 30K miles, as he started running when he was in his 20's..
We neglected to add any of these details, as we both were crying too hard when we wrote his OB. If there is any way you can add some
of this to his published memory, we would be so grateful. Thank you, Mark.
