Obituary..................James M. Kater
— James (Jim) M. Kater of Ripton, Vt., passed away in
hospital, Monday, May 21, 2018 at the age of 80 years, following a brief bout of
pneumonia and 12 years of managing Parkinson's Disease. His passing was peaceful
with family and friends present.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Cheryl Kater,
and his children and grandchildren: daughter Lisa Kate Tomchik of Marietta, Ga.,
and her children Rachel, Nathan and Rett; son John M. Kater of Wilson, N.C.;
daughter Rebecca K. Stadolnik and her husband Joe of Stow, Mass. and their
children Henry and Walter; and son Thomas Kater of Marietta, Ga., as well as his
dear cousins, the Rev. Dr. John L. Kater of Winchester, Va., and Janet Kater of
East Liverpool, Ohio.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Andrew Kater and
Dorothy Clark Kater, his brother Jack and sister Virginia, as well as his former
wives Lois Ann DeSha and Nancy Arden. Services for Jim will be conducted at a
future date in Winchester, Va., where he will be interred in the Kater family
plot.
Jim was born in Hackensack, N.J. He was a Korean War era
veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps, where he achieved the rank
of First Lieutenant as a fighter pilot. He attended Middlebury College and
thereafter worked for Delta Airlines for 29 years, achieving the position of
Manager of Flight Training. During his working career, Jim traveled extensively,
but decided to return to the peace and beauty of Vermont to retire. He was an
active participant at St. Stephen's Church and the local American Legion for
many years.
Jim had a wide range of interests. He was an avid
photographer, who worked as a stringer for the Altanta Journal and Constitution
and the Christian Science Monitor. He loved riding motorcycles, sailing, Ham
radio, fishing, crossword puzzles, music from baroque to Beethoven to the
Beatles, and visiting the pub and the local American Legion to chat with friends
over a beer.
Jim read and wrote poetry and non-fiction and had an extensive
library of books about aircraft, military history, religion, poetry, crime
novels and everything to do with Ireland and England. He was known for his great
sense of humor, his contemplative demeanor, deep religious views, his love for
and dedication to family and friends, his ability to connect with folks from all
walks of life, his service to others, and his vast network of acquaintances,
both famous and obscure.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Parkinson's Disease Foundation, the American Legion VT Post 27, or Porter
Medical Center.
Met Jim in 1976 and bought a BMW motorcycle from him and pulled it back to Texas on a trailer as it was in January. Still riding it today as Jim is riding those beautiful clouds we used to chase in our planes!!--Ted Langworthy
