Obituary :
Jim was born in 1950 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Grove City
College, also in western Pennsylvania. From early on, aviation was in his
family’s blood and he answered the call, becoming a naval officer and pilot. It
should be noted that he loved his country and was a life-long patriot,
exemplifying the virtues of a true American. Jim then went on to a
distinguished career as a commercial pilot, retiring as a captain with Delta
Air Lines.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman and loved nothing
better than hunting, fishing, and golfing with friends. He especially enjoyed
working his property in central Alaska with his family. He took up golf late in
life on the urgings of friends and cherished fellowship with them. Jim liked
nothing better than to gather friends together in his backyard fire pit and
pergola for barbecue and the fixings. Jim loved company and always sought to
invite friends along on his boat for a cruise on Lake Wedowee in Alabama.
His personal traits were rich with superlatives.
Generous to a fault, he shared what he had with anyone who had a need of any
kind. Quiet, unassuming, and humble, with a subtle dry wit that he zinged on
people by surprise.
Jim relished the close love and fellowship of
believers at New Hope Baptist church, especially his small family group, who
prayed for him continually right up until the end. He lived his life as an
example of the salvation and forgiveness offered to all through his savior,
Jesus Christ.
Stricken with pancreatic cancer in 2015, he fought
heroically with a dogged and patient demeanor that drew the admiration and
respect from all who witnessed his quiet struggle. His great heart finally gave
out and he was welcomed into the heavenly realm by his Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ, and those who arrived before him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Chris, two sons, (and
an “almost” son) grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
race, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7)
