___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Robert Morten Slette Obituary

Robert Morten Slette, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023, in McHenry, IL, at the age of 82. Born on October 3, 1941, in Joliet, IL, to Alf and Ruth Cooper Slette, he grew up to be a man of exceptional character, humor, and skill.

Robert's journey through life was marked by his dedication to his family and his country. He shared 55 joyous years with his loving wife, Sally Grant Slette, and together they raised a family that became his pride and joy. A devoted father, he leaves behind his daughters Kirsten Beausoleil (husband, Mark) and Gretchen Blair; his sons Eric, David (wife, Amy), John, Robert, and Mark (wife, Sarah) Slette; and his cherished grandchildren Joshua, Jason, Megan, John, Samantha, Grant, Aiden, Olin, Austen, Rion, Kyle, Graham, Will, Caleb, and Maren, along with a 16th grandchild on the way. Robert was predeceased by his sister, Sandra Hymes, and his parents.

After earning his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin in 1962, Robert's adventurous spirit led him to serve as a pilot in the Army, where he exhibited bravery and commitment during his time in Vietnam. Following his military service, he became a pilot for Delta Airlines, a career he proudly held for 35 years. His time in the skies was more than just a job; it was a manifestation of his love for adventure and precision.

Robert's interests were as rich and varied as the life he led. In his earlier years, he loved sailing and boating, embracing the tranquility and challenges of the open water. His hands were rarely still, as he found joy in woodworking and carpentry, crafting pieces that were both functional and beautiful. He possessed an uncanny ability to fix most anything, a trait that made him the go-to handyman within his family and community.

Those who knew Robert will remember him as a strong, funny, and devoted family man. His work ethic was unparalleled, but he always found time to savor the simple pleasures in life, like enjoying a good meal with his family. His sense of humor brought laughter to every gathering, and his loving nature made him a cornerstone in the lives of those he loved.

Robert's legacy is one of laughter, love, and the enduring strength of family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. As we bid farewell to Robert Morten Slette, we celebrate the life of a man who was not only funny and handy but also deeply loving. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us in the years to come.
