___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

IN THE CARE OF Doane Beal & Ames funeral home

Owen Hickey of Barnstable passed away peacefully at home after a long-fought battle with lung cancer.

Owen was born July 10, 1947 to John and Marguerite Hickey of East Providence, Rhode Island.

He was the beloved husband to Karen (Newberg) Hickey.

Owen enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent his 18th birthday at Parris Island, SC and is a Vietnam War veteran. Upon returning to the United States, he found his love of flying. A friend of his asked to go on a training flight and as the saying goes, “the rest is history.” Owen returned to Rhode Island where he continued his college education earning a degree in Business Administration and continued his pursuit of his private pilot’s license.

Owen married the love of his life Karen shortly before receiving a job offer at Air New England and the two moved to Cape Cod to raise their only daughter Megan. Owen continued to fly as an airline pilot commercially for nearly 50 years, ultimately retiring from Northwest Airlines as a Captain in 2007.

Owen’s other passion was golfing. He was a long-time member of Cummaquid golf course. During the off-season, Owen and Karen spent their winters in Myrtle Beach. Wintering in Myrtle Beach meant golf could be an all-yearlong sport. Owen was an avid New England sports fan and follower of the Patriots and Red Sox.

His greatest love was being a grandfather (Wawa). He was devoted to his daughter, son in law, and grandchildren Ryan and Aidan.

His grandchildren were the only people who could get him to abandon the golf course at a moment’s notice.

Owen enjoyed learning about history and passing that knowledge on to his family. Many vacations centered around battlefields and teaching his family the history behind it.

In addition to his wife Karen, Owen is survived by his daughter Megan Sabatinelli of Osterville, her husband Eric and their two children Ryan and Aidan.

Our Wawa will be missed by all and our lives will never be the same without him.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 9:30am-10:30am at Doane, Beal and Ames, Hyannis. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11am at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial will follow at Cummaquid Cemetery, Barnstable.
