___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Dale Carman Obituary

Dale E. Carman, 89, "darlin' husband" of 32 years to Louise, passed away on June 12 2024, in Stony Brook, New York. He was born on June 13, 1934, on a farm in Yarmouth, Iowa, son of the late James and Eva (nee Fischer) Carman.

Dale, a United States Air Force Veteran, served 10 years actively and 30 years in the Reserve. He received various honors, which included the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Air Force Longevity Award with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC). Dale retired at the rank of Major.

Finding immense fulfillment and joy in flying, Dale went on to join the upper echelon of aviation, becoming a Pan Am Pilot, where he was a "Sky God" for 26 years (1965-1991). After their demise, he continued his piloting career with Delta Airlines until his retirement in 2001.

His career granted him the opportunity to fulfill his love of traveling the world, taking him through six continents. Though he traveled far and wide, Alaska held a special place in his heart. The scenery, wildlife, and good fishing brought him back year after year.

When he wasn't enjoying walks to watch the sunset with his wife and dogs, Taylor and the late Sawyer, Dale was keeping busy by reading, doing the daily crossword puzzle, sudokus, and playing card games with his family, whom he loved very dearly.

Dale is survived by his wife Louise, his children Andra Renee Carman and Michael Carman, his siblings Marie Basset (Greg), James Carman (Neoma), many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews whom he adored. He is predeceased by siblings Margaret Ann Thomas, David Carman, and Glenn Carman.

Visitation and funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at the Branch Funeral Home, 190 E. Main Street, Smithtown, NY, 11787. Internment was at the Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd., Calverton, N.Y.
