Sharing belated news which comes to us on the 2^nd anniversary of Donna’s passing…..Donna Jean Smothers Jordan, wife of retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Russell William Jordan, passed in August of 2019.  Donna was 75 years of age at the time of her passing.  She is survived by her husband Russ Jordan, along with her children and grandchildren.

Daughter of of the late Richard K. Smothers (7/11/1913 - 2/3/1996) and Frances Eloise Lanham Smothers (4/12/1921 - 2/24/2008). She married Russell William Jordan on September 7, 1966 in Pensacola, FL. She graduated from University of Rhode Island with a degree in pharmacy in 1968. The couple moved to Georgia in 1970 where she was an active member of the community through her church, the schools, and her super secret PEO organization. She is survived by her husband, Russell; her three children, Kirsten Jordan Hampton (Heath) of Kathleen, GA, Nicole Jordan (David Large) of Fayetteville, GA, Danielle Jordan (William Hearn) of Douglasville, GA; her six grandchildren, Jordan Hampton, Kathleen Hampton, Joshua Hampton, Isabella Large, Caroline Large, Juliette Large; and her sisters Mary (Rhett) Farrior of Dadeville, AL and Lois Ann (Chris) McLean of Dothan, AL.

Mowell Funeral Home of Peachtree City, Georgia was entrusted with arrangements.

The retired Northwest pilots group/RNPA has shared this news with the passing of retired Northwest pilot Captain Billy D. Brown, Billy D. of Montgomery, Minnesota passed away on May 29, 2021 at the age of 86. Billy was born in Newby, Oklahoma, graduated High School in Burr Oak, Kansas, went to College at Oklahoma Central University in Edmund, OK. He joined the Navy as a cadet in their Pilot Training Program. This ultimately became the foundation of his lifelong career as a commercial airline Pilot for Northwest Airlines. He was married to Faye Pettit and together they made their life on a farm outside of Montgomery, MN where they raised, cattle, crops and two daughters. He loved to socialize. Spending time with friends was the highlight of his day. His booming laugh was his calling card and his gentle spirit is his legacy. Billy was predeceased by his wife, Faye Caroline (Pettit) Brown. He is survived by two daughters: Renee Brown Goodell, Marlene (Steve) Pearce, two grandchildren, Madeline Goodell and Niklas Pearce, one brother, Clayton Brown; sisters-in law, Dixie (Ron) West, Marilyn Pettit and Virginia Pettit, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held June 12, 2021 at St John Lutheran Church in Montgomery, MN at 11:00 a.m., followed by an interment at the graveside and a celebration of life from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm.    His pilot peers all felt a personal loss when word was spread of the death of Billy Brown. For those of us who shared a copilot past with Billy the following memory might ring familiar. Rolling takeoff and it’s your leg; Billy bumps up the throttles to close the bleeds, removes his hand and says: “You got her racehorse.”

From friends and family comes this news with the passing of Lynn Brown, wife of retired ATL based Delta pilot Captain Robert Gerald Brown.  From Lynn’s friends on Facebook we read: “As the picture shows our sweet, precious, lovable, outgoing, outspoken, big hearted Lynn is waving her last goodbye! She was surrounded by her husband and family last night as she lost her battle with cancer. She was always quick with a joke and that big infectious smile. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.  Please keep Bob, our mom and our family in your thoughts and prayers!  We will have a CELEBRATION of LIFE Friday, August 13th, Visitation 4:00-6:00, Service at 6:00 Celebrations in Pell City.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lakeside Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  This will be a Lynn Brown style Celebration. We want laughter and stories. Please let us know if you have a story or any special words you would like to say about her that night.”

Memorial Service for Lynn Dodge Brown, age 74, will be held Friday, August 13 at 6:00 p.m. at Celebrations in Pell City. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Celebrations. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to Lakeside Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Lynn. Lynn is survived by: her loving, caring, sweet, devoted husband of 44 wonderful years, Bob Brown; her mother, Helen Golden; brothers, Jimmy (Edie) Golden, Paul (Joy Lynn) Golden, sister, JoAnn (Greg) Bain, nieces and nephews Christa and Colbie Dodge, Michael (Laura) Golden, Tim (Teia) Golden, Victoria Lynn Golden, Logan (Lauren) Golden, Adam (Kelsey) Bain and Alex Bain, Don (Christy) Mappin, and a host of great nieces and nephews, special long-time friend, Patricia Milton, plus many, many friends. She is preceded in death by father, John Golden and brother, Lonnie Dodge.

In 1980, Bob and Lynn were house parents at the Alabama Sheriff's Boys Ranch and many of the boys still keep in touch with them and think of them almost like parents. One of Lynn’s great passions was flying… she was a flight attendant, first with Mackey International, for 7 years, and then with USAir for 23 years. To Lynn, it was never a job, but a calling to make people happy.

In 1994, her career was cut short when she was placed on too much intravenous antibiotics (Gentamicin and Vancomycin) for too long which led to the total destruction of her vestibular nerve, and she lost all of her balance. Lynn, being the trooper she is, did not let this defeat her.  She taught herself how to balance and learn to walk.  She even started a support group for others who had been damaged by these medications and called it “Wobblers Anonymous”. The group grew to over 2,000 people from all over the world and they helped bring attention to the harmful effects of these drugs when not properly monitored. She had the opportunity to spread the word on ABC local news, Nightly News with Dan Rather, on Dateline and she also appeared on Oprah.

To know Lynn was to love her; she made friends with most everyone she came in contact with and was a ray of sunshine everywhere she went. If Lynn was around, you were guaranteed to be laughing. Lynn loved to sing; she started singing gospel with her cousins when she was 10. When Bob retired in 2003, he started going to the guitar shop in Childersburg “pickin’ and singin’” 5 days a week. Eventually, Allen Senn asked both Bob and Lynn to join his bluegrass band; Lynn and Allen would sing, and Bob played bass. They performed to the delight of many until Lynn had a surgery that unfortunately took away her voice.

Lynn loved her husband, her family and her friends with all her heart. She was strong-willed, extremely honest, caring, hilarious, and unforgettable. There aren’t enough words to explain how much joy she has brought into this world, nor how much she will be missed. Lynn will be forever deeply loved. Now she’s back singing and flying again with angel’s wings.

Military veteran, WA/DL Capt. Robert "Bob" G. Schindler

August 20, 1936 ~ August 2, 2021

 

Word has reached our group with news of the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Robert Gene Schindler, age 84.  Captain Schindler joined Western Airlines 10-30-1967 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1996, based 030/SLC, Line Ck. Airman.  He is survived by his wife Patty, his sons and his grandchildren.

Obituary :     Robert "Bob" G. Schindler of Palm Beach, Florida passed away on the 2nd of August, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 20, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Moritz and Hazel Schindler. He lived his married life in Apple Valley, CA, Sandy, UT, Las Vegas, NV and Palm Beach, FL.

Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1962. After his honorable service, he went back to school and graduated from the University of Arizona. He completed the Aircraft Maintenance Program at Long Beach City College. Afterwards he became a pilot for Western Airlines and later with Delta Air Lines. He enjoyed flying for 30 years. He served as a Line Check Airman on the Boeing 757/767 before retiring from Delta's Salt Lake City base.

While flying for Western Airlines, he met a beautiful and vibrant flight attendant named Patty Davis, of Los Angeles, CA. They were married on November 20, 1970 and they enjoyed an undying love for each other for almost 51 years. They were blessed with three children. Bob's memory will live on with his wife, Patty; his son's, Rob, Patrick and Michael; his brother, Eddie; his sister's, Lily, Clara and Ruthie; his seven grandchildren and his nephews and nieces.

A funeral and burial service will be held on August 13, 2021. Service will be at 10 am at the chapel of Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park located at 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, UT 84065

Word has reached us with the passing of retired Northwest predecessor pilot Captain Murl R. Cole, age 99.  Captain Cole began his commercial flying career with West Coast Airlines 06-15-1948 and retired with Republic prior to their merger with Northwest Airlines.  He is survived by his wife Christiane ‘Chris’, his daughter Peggy, and his grand- , great-grand- and great-great grandchildren.

Obituary :  CDR Muryl R. Cole, U.S.Navy ret.

 

Scottsdale – On Friday, July 30, 2021, we lost yet another member of the "Greatest Generation". CDR Muryl R. Cole, U.S. Navy ret. Shed earth's surly bonds one last time as he journeyed west. The North Dakota native and longtime (53 years) Scottsdale resident was born June 21, 1922.

 

In September 1942, he completed training in the military's V-5 program to become a Navy pilot. Following additional flight training, he was sent overseas and assigned to VB-103 in Dunkeswell, England flying submarine patrol in PB4Y-1s. CDR Cole flew a total of sixty-three missions.

 

From the island of Guam in the Pacific post WWII he flew eleven PB4Y-2 missions into the center of typhoons to determine their strength. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, he flew a naval rescue mission to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. CDR Cole retired from the Navy with more than thirty-three years of service. In civilian life, he was an airline captain with Republic Airlines and its predecessors. He retired on June 21, 1982, following a thirty-four year nine-month airline career with more than 35,000 hours of flight time.

 

Remaining on this earth are his beloved devoted wife of 51 years, Chris. A daughter, Peggy Mashburn of Las Vegas. Two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. All are heirs to this patriotic American's legacy. Blue Skies and Tailwinds.
