___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our PCN Flight West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Roland Wilson Root

Roland Wilson Root passed away on October 27, 2025, in Marietta, Georgia, just one day after celebrating his 90th birthday. Born on October 26, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Roland led a life marked by dedication to service and aviation excellence.

Roland’s distinguished military career began with the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a fighter pilot and rose to the rank of Major. As an aviator with Wake Squadron VMA211, he flew the F-35B Lightning II Stealth Fighter—an aircraft emblematic of precision and power. His service reflected not only technical skill but also unwavering discipline and courage. After retiring from the Marine Corps on July 1, 1978, Roland continued his commitment to national defense through the Army Reserves. There he served with distinction until his retirement as a Sergeant First Class (E7) on October 26, 1995.Following his active military service, Roland transitioned seamlessly into a civilian aviation career. He began with the iconic Pan American airlines, where he would meet his wife, Ursula. He flew for Delta Airlines for an impressive 38 years, bringing the same level of professionalism and reliability to commercial flight that had defined his military tenure. His long-standing career with Delta is a testament to his passion for flying and his steadfast work ethic.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life well lived in service and strength.
