Roland Wilson Root passed away on October 27,
2025, in Marietta, Georgia, just one day after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Born on October 26, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Roland led a life marked
by dedication to service and aviation excellence.
Roland’s distinguished military career began with
the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a fighter pilot and rose to
the rank of Major. As an aviator with Wake Squadron VMA211, he flew the F-35B
Lightning II Stealth Fighter—an aircraft emblematic of precision and power. His
service reflected not only technical skill but also unwavering discipline and
courage. After retiring from the Marine Corps on July 1, 1978, Roland continued
his commitment to national defense through the Army Reserves. There he served
with distinction until his retirement as a Sergeant First Class (E7) on October
26, 1995.Following his active military service, Roland transitioned seamlessly
into a civilian aviation career. He began with the iconic Pan American
airlines, where he would meet his wife, Ursula. He flew for Delta Airlines for
an impressive 38 years, bringing the same level of professionalism and
reliability to commercial flight that had defined his military tenure. His
long-standing career with Delta is a testament to his passion for flying and
his steadfast work ethic.
