 :  MELVIN ROZEMA OBITUARY

Centerville, UT- Mel was born in Chugwater, Wyoming on September 23, 1939 to parents Bessie Rozema (née Ferguson) and Harry Rozema. He was the third of four children. He grew up on the family farm, and in 1946 they moved from Wyoming to Utah.

In June of 1957 Mel borrowed $100 from his father for private flying lessons. He was determined to learn to fly, citing his fascination of birds and their effortless flight and a little yellow crop duster that landed at a neighboring farm when he was a child as motivating factors. Mel worked his way through school, became a flight instructor and then began flying for the United States Postal Service, the Atomic Energy Commission, the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Fish and Game, as well as being a charter pilot. He later became an airline pilot, flying for Western and Delta Airlines, retiring after 33 years. He continued with his hobby plane, a Cessna 180. He enjoyed backcountry flying, often landing to fish, camp and pan for gold in the wilderness. After retiring from flight because of his age - he channeled his energy into remote control airplanes until his eyesight declined.

He married Sharol 'Sherry' Garner in 1961 and they started a family. Ken, Lane and Karen were raised in the home they built in Centerville, Utah. Together they instilled in their children a love of the great outdoors - camping, snowmobiling, gardening and traveling.

He cherished his grandchildren, Alyssa and Colton. He held dear to his heart his time with his four great grandchildren: Adalyn, Arden, Ellie and Aven. Visits with his family brought him true joy and he was very proud of his children.

He served as the airport manager and fought tirelessly for SkyPark Airport in Woods Cross, Utah for many years. You could often find him mowing the grass or plowing the snow because he took pride in all of his work. Mel loved working in the wood shop at his hangar at the airport, carefully crafting intricate chess and domino sets, beautiful wooden clocks and furniture. His talent and precision was remarkable.

He enjoyed mingling with his many beloved friends at the Down Under, Sunshine Cafe, Alice's Cafe and Ramblin Roads. He had countless lifelong friends and amazing neighbors that he shared many hunting and camping trips, barbecues and shenanigans with.

In February 2013, he suffered a terrible loss when his loving and loyal wife, Sherry, passed away. After that he felt like a piece of him was missing and he never truly recovered. I can recall him often saying, "I've lost my mate and now I don't know what to do."

Mel was as stubborn as they come and rough around the edges, but his old age and humbling life experiences brought in a tenderness that we rejoiced in. He always gave wise advice, he was generous and forgiving. He loved cracking jokes, watching NASCAR and Jazz games with Sherry, canning tomatoes, working in the garden and he made one hell of a brisket.

In October of 2022 Mel was diagnosed with throat and lymphatic cancer and he came prepared to fight. Karen was by his side every single day, at every medical appointment and cared for him selflessly during his battle. After beginning treatment he and his body decided he could no longer carry on and he passed away at Lakeview Hospital in the company of his devoted daughter and faithful son-in-law, Jeff.

Mel is survived by Ken Rozema and Amy Stoker of Salt Lake City, UT; Lane Rozema of New York City, NY; Karen and Jeff Argyle of Centerville, UT; Alyssa, Adalyn, Arden and Aven Argyle of South Ogden, UT; Colton, Jordan and Ellie Argyle of Centerville, UT.

A celebration of life will be held in April of 2023 at SkyPark Airport. If you are interested in attending, please email celebratingmel2023@gmail.com

Obituary :  Guy D. Paris, 86, died peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital on Wednesday, December 28th surrounded by his loving family. He was the widower of Carol (Nelson) Paris.

Guy was born in Woburn, MA on April 6, 1936, and was a son of the late Domenic and Susan (Bertini) Paris. He had an active childhood working on the family farm and often told stories of warm Summers spent amidst the tomato and celery fields and trips with his dad to the market at Faneuil Hall to sell produce. One day, on his way to grade school, Guy spotted a J3 Cub airplane at the local gas station. The owner of the gas station brought it there as an advertisement for the airport. Guy could not believe the beauty the airplane. His mom took him to the airport and the plane’s owner gave him his first airplane ride. As he stared wide-eyed at the wonderous machine, he was filled with dreams of flying and someday becoming a pilot. When he got old enough, he would ride his bicycle to the airport, where he would wash and refuel the planes and put them in their hangers. At around 14 years old, he joined the civil air patrol, and a former WW2 Army Air Force pilot instructor taught him to fly. Then, on his 16th birthday, he made his first solo flight at the Beverly airport. As dawn broke on that Sunday, he was knocking at the door of his instructor’s residence to be the first pilot in the air that day. Later, as a young man, he at times held down 3 jobs to support his family. He proudly served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged. Through hard work and determination, he eventually became a commercial airline pilot and flight check captain with Delta Airlines. In addition to his love of aviation, he enjoyed antique cars, gardening and going to car shows. With his great, big infectious smile he would illuminate even the darkest day, always exemplifying values of love, respect, compassion, honesty, and determination in his everyday life. As a godly man who walked in faith, he was an extraordinary example of a life well-lived, instilling values of integrity and perseverance in his loving children. He leaves an indelible mark of kindness on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to share in this lifetime with him.

Guy is survived by three daughters; Lisa Marie Paris of Worcester, MA, Michele Paris Lubbe of E. Falmouth, MA and Kristin Paris Duchesne of Barrington, two grandchildren; Austin Lubbe and Colton Lubbe, His partner of 20 years; Violet Sullivan of Nashua, two sisters; Evelyn Handweiler of California and Josephine “Dolly” McDermott of Virginia as well as two sons-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by a brother, John Paris.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on WEDNESDAY, January 4th from 4 until 8 PM at ROCHETTE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 21 Kinsley Street, Nashua. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on THURSDAY, January 5th at 10 AM in St. Louis de Gonzague Church, 48 W Hollis Street, Nashua.  Interment with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Nashua.

Obituary : Terence Michael Mullane

Terence Michael Mullane (Terry) of Park City, Utah died from Alzheimer's Disease on December 19, 2022, at the age of 79.  After a beautiful prayer by longtime friend Father Bob Bussen, Terry took his final breath and passed peacefully into eternal life.

Terry was born May 5, 1943, in Dayton, Ohio to Patrick and Mary Ann (Dicks) Mullane. He was raised with his two younger brothers and two younger sisters in Kansas City, Missouri where he attended Rockhurst High School and Rockhurst College.

After graduating from college, Terry fulfilled his lifelong dream of flying airplanes. Upon completion of Aviation Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in August 1966. The "Wiley Mule" proudly flew A-4, F-4, and F-8 fighter jets and completed two tours of duty in the Mediterranean and Vietnam.

In 1973, Terry was honorably discharged from the Navy and began a 30-year career as a pilot for Delta Airlines - his dream job. It was the perfect combination of his passions for flying and travel. The "job" took him all over the world, but his two favorite landing spots were France and Ireland, often traveling to both even after retirement.

As if one career wasn't enough, Terry attended Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta, Georgia, and was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association in 1981. When he wasn't flying, he practiced family law.

After raising his family in Atlanta, Terry moved to Park City, Utah in 1988, where he resided until his death. Park City allowed him to spend his summers on the golf course and his winters on the ski slopes. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church sharing his beautiful voice in the choir most Sunday mornings.

Terry was a most loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Eileen. His three children: Sean Mullane (Heather) of Chapel Hill, North Caroline; Shannan Stegman (Jeff) of Orlando, Florida; and Carey Nikolaisons (Villy) of Sun Valley, Idaho. Ten grandchildren: Taegan, Niall and Xue Mullane; Hanna and Michael Stegman; Tanner (Quincy), Madison and Luke Marcouiller; and Jake and Aija Nikolaisons. And a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, White Pine Canyon Rd., Park City, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Alzheimer's Association Utah Chapter (12894 S. Pony Express Rd., Suite 300, Draper, Utah 84020).

Melvin Craig

Melvin G. Craig (“Mel”), age 90, of St. John Township, Crown Point, peacefully passed

away on December 23, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. On June 14, 1948, at the

age of 16, Mel received his private pilot’s license at Triangle Airport in Dyer. At that time,

Mel was believed to be the youngest Chicago-Calumet area pilot. He began his flight

training at the Triangle Airport at age 14, in exchange for doing odd jobs around the

airport. He had to wait until he turned 16 to achieve his pilot’s license, because the

aeronautic regulations ban solo flights under the age of 16. Mel was a 1950 graduate of

St. John Township High School of Dyer. In December of 1952, Mel was drafted into the

Army where he served during the Korean War as an airline mechanic, until November of

1954. On January 23, 1965, he married Carol Jeanne Gettler. Mel was a member of the

Mason Lodge. He was also a commercial airline pilot, achieving ratings of Airline

Transport Pilot, Airplane Single Engine Land and Airplane Multiengine Land. After flying

for 50 years and logging more than 30,000 hours piloting a plane, Mel was awarded the

Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2006. At

the time Mel received The Wright Brothers award it had only been awarded to 560 other

pilots worldwide. In order to be nominated for The Wright Brothers award, he had to fulfill

50 consecutive years of flying, obtain 3 letters of recommendation from holders of FAA

pilot certificates, as well as have a clean safety history. After 33 years, he retired from his

job as a commercial airplane pilot, where he had worked for Flying Tiger, North Central

Airlines, Republic Airlines, and Northwest Airlines. Mel also loved to restore airplanes,

including an AT-6, BT-13, and his pride and joy, a red Beechcraft Staggerwing, which was

shown at the Rockford Air Show. Mel was on the emergency response “go-team” where

he would investigate crash scenes involving airplanes for North Central Airlines, Republic

Airlines, and Northwest Airlines. He also flew as a personal pilot for Scheffer Corp. Mel

had forgotten more about flying than most will ever know or ever learn. He loved to share

his knowledge of airplanes and flying with anyone who was interested. Mel inspired many

to become airline pilots due his love of flying.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew and Jean Craig. Mel is survived by his

loving wife, Carol J. Craig, his son, John (Megan) Craig, and grandchildren Madison, Kate

& William.

Military veteran, DL Capt. Stephen L. Sachs

December 1, 1943 - December 20, 2022

From friends and colleagues, we learn of the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Stephen Sachs, age 79. Steve joined Delta Air Lines 11-06-1972.  He is survived by his wife Brenda, and by his daughters and their families.

Please see website links below for online obituary, photos and service information.

Steve’s friend Capt. Ballance writes:  I wanted to tell you that Steve Sachs passed away, from complications associated with cancer, on December 20. He fought the disease for eighteen years, and I never heard him complain. I first flew with Steve on the DC-8, and that spawned a friendship of nearly forty years.  He flew Army OV-1 Mohawks in Vietnam, followed by a tour at the US Embassy in Tehran  flying a C-47. Upon release from active duty, Steve attended and earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee. Shortly thereafter he went to work for Delta, commencing a career that spawned some thirty-one years. Never one to rest on his laurels, he became a licensed A&P mechanic, followed shortly by an IA designation that enabled him to perform annual inspections on airplanes. He restored and flew a Stearman biplane for over thirty-five years until several weeks before his demise. He was always generous with his time and skillset in terms of lending his talents to others afflicted with the vintage aircraft passion.  I am attaching the funeral home obituary in hopes that you would forward it to your email lists.

Best,

Harry Ballance

Obituary : Oliver G. “Tim” Locher was called home to his Lord and Savior on 29 November 2022 at the age of 83.

Tim was born on 29 June 1939 to Oliver Glenn and Lela Barbara Locher in Bluffton, Ohio. The family moved to South Florida where Tim and his sister, Nan, attended Lake Worth High School. It was there that Tim enjoyed football and basketball. More importantly, Lake Worth is where God blessed him with the love of his life, Karen Thoureen.

After graduating high school in 1957, Tim accepted an appointment at the Naval Preparatory School and in 1958 reported to the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1962. While at Annapolis, Tim played on the varsity football team and developed a love for the Mighty Goat.

Receiving his naval aviator wings in 1964, Tim flew the E-2 Hawkeye before transitioning to a career in civil aviation where he flew for National, Pan American, and Delta Airlines.

Tim and Karen were able to return to South Florida and raise their family in Hollywood, FL. While a member of Sheridan Hills Baptist Church, God began to utilize him in a more public way. Whether flying his commercial airline flights, serving as a Hollywood City Commissioner, Florida Southern Baptist Convention President, or on the International Mission Board, Tim strived to use his position to share the message of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In 1999 they moved to Hendersonville, NC enabling them to be closer to family. Their lives centered around serving at First Baptist Church.

Tim is survived by Karen, his wife of 60 years; their children Gregg Locher (Ann) and Jill Jackson (Mark); grandchildren Lauren Rucker (Ben), John Jackson (Hunter), Kelly Shotwell (Jason), Hannah Locher, Garrett Locher (Delaney), James Jackson; and great-granddaughter Emery Jackson.
