Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. ~ IN MEMORY ~

Captain Bob Smith, 78
September 17, 1933 – January 15, 2012

Robert Edgar Smith, 78, of Coeur d'Alene, passed away Jan. 15, 2012. Bob was born Sept. 17, 1933, in Decatur, Ill., to John Robert Smith and Deeata Isabelle Smith (Reeves). His family moved to Denver shortly after. Bob joined the Navy at the age of 19 and served on board the ship USS Phillipine Sea during the Korean War. On return he married and has three surviving children.

After beginning to learn to fly at the age of 14 he was ready to join Western Airlines in 1966. He served Western as a pilot. He also served in numerous elected positions with the Air Lines Pilots Association including Master Executive Counsel Chair. He flew for Delta after Western merged with Delta until his retirement.
Through his adventurous years he skied the mountains of Colorado, sailed in boat races in Coronado, Calif., snowmobiled the frozen lakes of Minnesota, golfed Hawaii golf courses. He was a member of CAMS and flew RC airplanes for many years. His greatest love was Harleys. He got his first in 1947. In later years he bought and sold bikes all over the nation. He was a lifetime member of HOG after joining in 1983. He had fun with the Tuesday and Thursday golfing guys and once a year those crazy Kalispel golfers. He enjoyed the company of the folks at the Eagles Aerie 4080 in Hayden.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy; his daughters, Jeanne Bistranin and Amy Leonard in Denver, Colo.; and his son, Wade in Pittsburgh, Pa. Also his step-daughter, Grace, in Seattle. He also leaves behind a sister, Deena, and his brother, Carl, both in Denver. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. There are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Thanks to Hospice for their
care and always being there.

At Bob's request no services will be held at this time. His ashes will be taken to Denver for a family memorial service at a later date. Please visit Bob's online memorial and sign his guest book at

It is with a sad heart that I must inform you that Fred passed away on Wednesday. Cryssie & I were out eating and we got the call from Freddie, their daughter. She said it started some time around six the night before and the care giver called the doctor. He was taken to Prebyterian and just gave out. Freddie said he did not have a heart attack, he just had lost a lot of weight and gave out. Mauriece has
been told but doesn't understand. Freddie & David drove to Robeson Ranch from Houston arriving about 8pm on Wednesday.
Funeral arrangements at bottom of email.
Cathy Carrasco Pate & Doug Pate have graciously offered their home for a gathering to celebrate Fred's life following the service. Their address is 3050 Creek Bend Circle
Grapevine, TX 76051
817/488-8717-H
817/233-6593-C
It is VERY close to the funeral home. Please bring some kind of food. Cryssie is bringing a ham. Need one more something like roast beef or a turkey breast and anything else for fill-ins. If you plan to bring paper goods, like paper towels, trash bags, paper plates, dessert plates, napkins or plastic ware please co-ordinate that with Cathy. I will help co-ordinate the food, so if you know what you are bringing, let me know. That way I can let anyone know what else is needed if you are open for suggestions. Cathy said she would get wine and beer, so if you want to give her money instead of cooking, I am sure that would be appreciated as well.
I have no idea at this time where Mauriece will go to live, or any other specific details.

Sincerely,
Linda Sorenson
There will be a visitation on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday.Fred's grandson, Troy, will conduct the service.
