Water jets mark final flight

Capt. John E. Crum lands his last flight as a Delta Air Lines pilot Wednesday.
(Patrick Reddy photo)
BY TERRY FLYNN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HEBRON - Delta Capt. John E. Crum said he was "closing the circle'' Wednesday when he completed his final flight as a commercial airline pilot, from Frankfort, Germany, to Cincinnati - Northern Kentucky International Airport. Mr. Crum, who grew up in Hyde Park and graduated from Withrow High School, landed the Delta MD-11 jumbo jet and taxied between twin arches of water from a pair of airport firetrucks in a traditional final salute. ''I flew my first plane (a single-engine Taylorcraft) out of Lunken (Airport) in about 1956,'' said Mr. Crum, who will celebrate his 60th birthday today at his home in Park City, Utah. ''I wanted to end my flying career where it started. It seemed fitting.'' Mr. Crum, who began his career with Delta in February 1965, has more than 25,000 flight hours in both civilian and military aircraft. He piloted the inaugural flight from Cincinnati to Paris in 1991 and flew Jimmy Carter from Atlanta to his presidential inaugural in Washington. He is qualified to fly seven different commercial aircraft, as well as helicopters and single-engine land and sea planes. A graduate of Ohio State University, Mr. Crum became an Army paratrooper after college, when he discovered ''it might be better to fly the airplane rather than jump out of it.'' Federal Aviation Administration regulations mandate retirement at age 60 for all commercial pilots. ''I may learn to play golf, and I'll be able to spend more time with my wife,'' he said. ''There is some nostalgia here. I won't miss the long nights over the Atlantic or the time away from home. But I will miss the camaraderie, and I'll miss Delta. It's been a good company.'' Ironically, Mr. Crum couldn't make a connecting Delta flight from here to Salt Lake City on Wednesday afternoon because snow storms in Utah had closed the airport.

Tributes:

Captain John Crum checked me out on the L1011, as Captain. During the checkout I learned that we had several things in common, we were both Airborne/Rangers, in the US Army and there are not many of those working for any Airline.

Captain John Crum was a gentleman and I am sorry that he is gone.

Captain Walter I. Jackson, 73: Aviation expert was known for compassion and wit

By Mea Watkins

Capt. Walter I. Jackson was a sharp thinker and an expert in the aviation industry. A commercial pilot for more than thirty years, he was known to uphold high standards of ethics and integrity.
“He cared about doing the right thing,” said Bob Stimpson of Fayetteville, a line captain at Delta Air Lines, who referred to Jackson as a mentor and friend. “He was a great advocate for the line pilot and the public we serve. Walt leveraged his Eastern [Air Lines] career and his time at the FAA with straight-talk and honesty,” he said, in reference to Jackson’s most recent work with the Federal Aviation Administration as an aviation safety inspector in the Delta Air Lines Certificate Management Office. “I trusted his advice and listened when he spoke,” he said.
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Jackson studied engineering and mathematics at Ohio State University. Upon graduation, he worked in ticketing and computer programming before he began a flying career as a pilot with Eastern Air Lines and a captain with Viscount Air Services. He maintained memberships with the Air Line Pilots Association and the Quiet Birdmen Atlanta Hangar.
His daughter Beth Day, of Lawrenceville, remembers the single-engine aircrafts her father flew while earning his pilot license, “He always teased me because I called those his ‘practice planes.’ I thought they were pretend airplanes,” she said with a laugh.
Walter I. Jackson, who recently battled pancreatic cancer, died Dec. 5 following a brief illness. He was 73. A life memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at Roswell Funeral Home, which is also in charge of arrangements.
Growing up as a pilot’s daughter was very exciting, said his daughter, adding that she was “fascinated by his exotic job,” and treasured the gifts he brought back from Canada and the Caribbean. Although his career often kept him away from home for a days at a time, Day says her father was very involved in her life, noting that she enjoyed the time they spent together during the two-week breaks between trips.
Harry Stillman of Canton, who worked with Jackson throughout his flying career and the FAA, appreciated his friend’s sense of humor. “When he made phone calls, he started with ‘Hey, old man,’ like he was the youngster,” Stillman said. The men, who were neighbors for a few years, also enjoyed a bit of friendly competition, buying pre-owned Porsche cars just months apart. Stillman said one day Jackson asked, “… Am I gonna have to buy a plane, too?” after he noticed a magazine with aircraft for sale in his mailbox.
A seventh grade Social Studies teacher, Day credits her father for her love of history, describing him as an avid reader, World War II history buff, and supporter of higher education. “He was diligent about my education and the importance of it,” she said.
In addition to his daughter, Jackson is also survived by a sister, Lois Jackson Gabrych of North Carolina; a brother Albert C. Jackson of Arizona, and two grandchildren.

John E. Heinrich
Capt. John E. Heinrich made his final flight west on December 9, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. with his wife Lisa of 22 years by his side.
It saddens me to have to deliver this information about our dear friend. John was one of a kind, and the absence of his vibrant personality will not go unnoticed, and will be sorely missed. Though I tried to reach out to everyone in advance about Johns battle, it is still seemingly such a shock that these are the words I type this evening. John and I built our office together over 15 years ago, and he was a great partner and friend. For most of his life he held three jobs at once, two of which were full time jobs. He was Vice President, and Investment Advisor at the Heinrich-Kamal Pilot Group at Merrill Lynch, an A320 Delta Airlines Captain, and a F-16/A-7 Fighter Pilot for the 180th Fighter Group.
John had survived a brain aneurysm just over a month ago, and was on track to recovery, when complications reversed his very strong efforts. John had just retired from Delta/Northwest on 1 October. Though some thought he may be a type-A personality, he saw many type-A personalities in the rear view mirror of his super modified Hennessey V750hp Cadillac CTS. He was fun, smart, but a regular guy in very many ways. He will be severely missed.
Please join us in saying goodbye to our friend John, and I know that you will all keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during the days ahead.

John Heinrich (1948-2012)

(News article) A high school and college track star who became an Air Force pilot instructor, an Ohio Air National Guard officer, and a commercial airline pilot, John Heinrich died Sunday in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg Township. He was 64.

Mr. Heinrich of Springfield Township retired Oct. 1 as a Delta Air Lines captain. He planned to buy a small airplane in the spring. He and his wife wanted to take a trip each month. They returned from their first, a trip to the Napa Valley in California, on Oct. 27. He was found the next day suffering the effects of a brain aneurysm, his wife, Lisa, said.

Mr. Heinrich golfed. The couple were scuba divers - "and he was a workout fanatic," his wife said. "He was in the most phenomenal shape of any 64-year-old man you'd ever want to meet."

He also was a vice president and senior financial adviser with the Heinrich-Kamal Group, affiliated with Merrill Lynch. He worked with pilots to plan their retirement finances.

"He was always so good with numbers, and he thoroughly enjoyed it," his wife said. "He cared about people."

He was born July 10, 1948, to Lena and Ralph Heinrich and grew up in West Toledo. He was a graduate of Start High School and, while there, specialized in high and low hurdles on the track team and competed in state championships. He also played football, but he attended Ohio State University on a track-and-field scholarship.

He was in ROTC at Ohio State and he became a second lieutenant in the Air Force after graduation, said his former wife, Sharon Looney. He was a fighter pilot instructor during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.

"He was very patient and very good teaching his students how to fly," she said. "John was always dedicated to whatever he was involved in."

He had a master's degree from Mississippi State University.

Back in Toledo, he was a lieutenant colonel in the 180th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard based at Toledo Express Airport. He was flying F-16 fighter jets when he retired in 1994, but for much of his Air Guard career, he flew A-7s.

As a fighter pilot, Mr. Heinrich maintained the focus of an athlete, said Kent Ernsberger, also a retired lieutenant colonel with the 180th.

"He was always very fit and prepared to fly missions," Mr. Ernsberger said. "He lived life to the fullest. He was very, very outgoing, and when you were in the presence of John, there were going to be a lot of laughs."

Mr. Heinrich's commercial airline career dated to the 1980s, when he was hired by the former Northwest Airlines, which later merged with Delta.

Surviving are his wife, Lisa, whom he married June 14, 1991; sons, Don and Joseph; sisters, Marilyn Stapleton and Susan Broeren, and two grandsons.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Heritage Church of God, Monclova Township, where he was a member.

The family suggests tributes to Pilots for Kids in White Lake, Mich., the Toledo Area Humane Society, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
