Captain Milton Francis Stokey, Jr.

Milton F. Stokey, Jr., a resident of Auburn, peacefully passed away at home on January 28, 2024, at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving spouse of 52 years, Patricia (Patty) Stokey. In addition, he leaves behind two children, Heather (Bob) Moffett, and Travis (Aimee) Stokey, along with 4 beautiful and cherished grandchildren, Catie, Bobby, Abbie and Lainee. He is also survived by his sister, Dolores Cornell and brother, Jeff Stokey, and their loving families. He is preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Milton Stokey, Sr.

Milton spent his entire career in adventures and misadventures of aviation, beginning as a teenager learning the aircraft restoration and salvage business. Auburn University gave him the opportunity to become an instructor pilot, culminating as chief pilot for the University in the late 60’s and early 70s. His dream job as an airline pilot came on March 22, 1971, with Southern Airways. Through mergers with Republic Airlines, Hughes Air West, Northwest Airlines and finally Delta Airlines, Milton followed his calling as an aviator until official retirement on September 21, 2003.

Milton loved Auburn. After graduation in 1969 and taking the job with the airline he was on the move to different crew bases, but vowed to move back to Auburn one day to make a permanent home on the plains. That was accomplished in 2000, calling Auburn his forever home. He also enjoyed cooking BBQ for special people, along with hunting and fishing with his grandson and great friends.

There will be a Celebration of Life on February 10, 2024, at Jeffcoat Trant Funeral Home, 1500 Frederick Road, Opelika, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or to CARE Humane Society (Carehumane.org) in memory of Milton’s love of animals or in hopes of a cure for the devastating disease of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

The family has secured a bereavement rate of $119 at the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Auburn Opelika (2257 Interstate Drive, Opelika, AL ) for those wishing to house near the service location. Please be sure to ask for the special bereavement rate at time of booking.

Obituary for Billy Paul Current

Bill Current of Bloomington, MN passed away unexpectedly on October 17th, 2023 at the age of 83. Bill was the youngest child of 3, born to William and Bertha Current in Harrisonville MO.

After graduating Bill became a high school physics teacher in Missouri, but his ultimate passion of flying was still calling. In 1967 Bill become a commercial pilot based out of Minnesota. He had a 32 year career with Northwest Airlines, ultimately becoming a captain of the 757. He said the 757’s were his favorite plane to fly because they were more technologically advanced compared to the other planes at that time, and he really liked the oversized engines that ‘threw you back in your seat’.

But his most notable accomplishments that he would want shared, are the hole in one and the double eagle he pulled off over the course of his golfing ‘career’. Golf was a sport he had a strong love/hate relationship with, but at the end of the day there was no other place he wanted to be, but on the golf course.

In 1968 Bill met the love of his life, Kathy, at the old Eddie Webster’s in Bloomington MN. He just happened to stop in on his way home from the airport one night, and Kathy just happened to be there to watch her best friend’s dad play piano. They married after a 3 year courtship and were each other’s rock for the last 53 years

Bill’s companionship, generosity and of course dry wit will be greatly missed. As he always said when doing any work that required a step ladder, ‘I never knew my real ladder’.

Bill is preceded in death by parents, William Paul and Bertha; and sisters Patty and Betty. Survived by loving wife Kathy; children Jeff and Cheryl (Jesse) and grandson, Cody.

Cline Preble was such a gentleman. He was one of my A-320 Sim IPs in LGW
at the old British Caledonian (Now BA) training center, and recommended me
for my Type Rating in December, 1989. The following January he would give
me my Line Check along with the FAA's Joe Masini MSP-ORD-MSP. I learned as
much about working with people from him as I did flying the Airbus. I
would incorporate much of what I learned from Cline into my own teaching
style. Who said training wasn't supposed to be enjoyable??? Later, the
two of us would work together to write instructional and procedural
documents for VNAV--when we launched the 320 initially it was LNAV and Cat
I only. VNAV and CAT II/CAT III autoland would not come on line for
several years.

Sadly, the gent who flew Seat Support for me and ran the operation in
London for us, Mark Walton, is in hospice in Richmond, VA with stage 4
cancer.

Working with both of these gentlemen were some of the very best chapters in
my life's book. I will cherish those memories for as long as I live.

Godspeed, gentlemen

Hello Friends and Colleagues,

Chuck and his wife Pauline reside in Bozeman, Montana. Chuck was an Air Force veteran completing pilot training with class 66-C at Laredo Air Force Base, TX. After graduation Chuck underwent instructor training and stayed on station at Laredo. He was one of the first T-38 instructors at Laredo AFB.

Chuck came onboard at NWA on April 07, 1969.  As a new Boeing 727 First Officer, Chuck was acclaimed for welcoming and encouraging to the new guy (2/O) sitting Reserve. Later in his NWA career Chuck served as a pilot instructor and was reputed to be one of the best.

Our most sincere heartfelt condolences go to Pauline and their family.

Charles Rogers

d. January 23, 2024

Bozeman

Charles Stanley Rogers II was born on March 12, 1941 in Jersey City, NJ to loving parents Blanche and Charles and big sister Carol (b. 1940). Growing up in Fort Lee, the backdrop of NYC, he learned that he loved family trips to remote Roscoe, NY, more than the subway ones into Manhattan. He attended the grade school across the street, saw the Yankees games with his dad and played high school basketball at All Hallows High School in the Bronx. Further afield, he attended St. Michael’s College in Vermont where his ROTC program led him to graduate as an officer in the United States Air Force. His commission landed him in the remote border town of Laredo, TX, where he trained jet fighter pilots on the Northrop T-38 Talon. Laredo turned out to be a prime location to further the love of hunting he learned from his uncles in upstate New York, a perfect spot to test the limits of his Corvette, to taste the exquisite combo of enchiladas and a Dr. Pepper, and a great place to make enduring friendships.

Upon an honorable discharge in 1969, he relocated to Minneapolis, MN where he pinned on a fresh set of wings at Northwest Orient Airlines. Throughout his 33-year career, mostly with NWA and later Delta, Captain Rogers piloted a variety of jet airliners to destinations across the globe - where he made smooth landings and delivered passengers safely to their vacations and back home to their loved ones. Not long after his arrival in Minnesota, he met and fell in love with Pauline (Polly) Smith Hilgendorf and her two young boys, Tommy (special needs from birth) and Peter. Chuck and Polly were married on April 25, 1970, and moved into their first home in Burnsville, MN, after their European honeymoon. Together he raised her boys as his own. They had their first daughter, Sara, in 1972. Daughter Rachel was born in 1975 and shortly thereafter the family moved to Apple Valley, MN, where son Charles III (“Chip”) was born in 1978.

Chuck’s flying schedule meant countless and excited “daddy’s home!” moments as well as extended periods of time on the ground where he coached his kids in sports, helped with homework, taught them to ski, how to catch a fish, served on their school board, and helped them chase their own passions as well as his own. Travel remained his biggest passion as well as a job perk - one he took great joy in sharing. He and Polly have dotted the globe and he took every opportunity to fly each of his kids on 1:1 quick trips to exciting places stateside and abroad. Family trips had them in Hawaii, London, Germany, East Coast visits, beach destinations, and all points between. It was an unforgettable family ski trip to Big Sky in 1989 that sparked the first of many returns to Montana, and the joyful discovery of a lifestyle that went far beyond the slopes and into the rivers and up the mountain meadows. So unforgettable that in 1998, with just two years until retirement, the newly empty-nesters packed up and moved to the quaint, charming, bustling, and promising Bozeman. They took up residence in a beautiful home with views of those very mountains, meadows, and valleys that first stole their hearts. Their home in Triple Tree Ranch was known by family, neighbors, and friends as a place of warm welcome, great food, big laughs, bridge games, fun parties, cozy beds - and free car washes for anyone who parked a car in the driveway for more than 3 hours. In Bozeman, Chuck made and maintained countless friendships, notably with the trap-shooting, self-proclaimed “Old Farts”, and as a proud member in the local Flight 121 of the Order of Daedalians. He also forged deep connections with the priests, staff, and church goers at Resurrection University Catholic Church, as an usher and volunteering to serve meals to college students,  and grew close with the countless wonderful humans in Polly’s vast social network.

He loved his wife, kids, grandkids, a few dogs, a couple cats, his home, and his country. He was beyond generous at birthdays, Christmas, and when our gas gauges approached the dreadful ‘half-full’ mark. He loved a hearty meal followed by a bowl of ice cream. Chuck was legendary at spinning an average moment into a great big story. He loved running errands, both his own and for anyone else who needed a Costco run, a trip to the dentist, a ride from the airport, or his snowblower up their driveway.

In September 2021 Chuck and Polly downsized into The Springs Living in Bozeman. For Chuck, “assisted living” took on a different meaning as it became a great opportunity for him to assist others—he took every chance to escort residents back to their rooms, walk a neighbor's dog, run errands for those who couldn’t, and perform other small acts of kindness.

His love of travel and any sort of getaway - seemingly planning the next one before returning from the current one - continued until his last moments. On January 23 of this year, just days after returning from a quick solo trip to the warm lights and lively action he loved in Las Vegas, he suffered a severe and devastating stroke. After a few days in Bozeman Deaconess hospital, he passed peacefully and comfortably at home surrounded by his wife and kids.

Chuck’s family and friends are beyond grateful for the time we had with him on this earth–time full of grand adventures, great jokes, countless acts of service, and mountains of love.

Chuck is preceded in death by father Charles Rogers (1974), mother Blanche Rogers (2010), and step-son Tommy Mark Hilgendorf (1977).

Chuck is survived by his wife Polly Rogers; step-son Peter Hilgendorf (son Van, daughter Sylvie); daughters, Sara Rogers (fiance Tom Davern), and Rachel Hagenson (daughter Maddie, son Will); and son Chip Rogers (spouse Brenda Brock, daughter Cooper, son Charles IV “Charlie”). All are dedicated to carrying Papa’s generous, friendly, loyal spirit forward in their own lives. Chuck is also survived by his sister, Carol Beaugard (spouse Edouard); sister-in-law, Beth Chapdelaine; brother-in-law Jeff Miels; and countless nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is being planned for later in the year and will be communicated to family and all friends in the Bozeman community and beyond. In lieu of flowers we would invite donations in Chuck’s honor to the Gallatin Skyhawk Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)3 whose support helps train the next generation of aviators. Checks can be sent to: GSS Foundation, C/o Paul Routhier, 2486 Arabian Ave, Bozeman, MT 59718.

Danny Bowlin Obituary

Danny William Bowlin, age 78, passed away on January 17, 2024, in Memphis, TN. He was born on March 20, 1945, in Memphis, TN, to Mary Christine Miller Bowlin and Samuel Wayne Bowlin.

Danny will be fondly remembered as an aviator, historian, and journalist. His aviation career began in 1968 when he entered Air Force Pilot training in class 68H. Serving in the US Air Force and Tennessee Air National Guard, Danny flew cargo missions in support of the Vietnam War, earning the Vietnam Service Medal. Later, he embarked on a successful airline career, starting with Southern Airways in 1969 and retiring as a Boeing 747 Captain from Northwest Airlines after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

Aviation was not only Danny's vocation but also his passion. He had the privilege of flying the Boeing B17, World War II Bomber, known as the "Aluminum Overcast," on a nationwide tour. This experience allowed him to pay tribute to the brave men and women who served during World War II. Danny's interest in history and journalism intertwined with his time flying the B17, as he listened to veterans' stories, studied their experiences, and wrote articles to preserve their remarkable narratives. He took great pride in moderating "Warbirds in Review" programs presented in Oshkosh, WI, which were recorded as a lasting tribute to veterans and those who restore historically significant aircraft.

In his later years, Danny cherished staying connected with his many friends and sharing his love of music with his Memphis friends.

Danny is survived by his son, Jeffrey Bowlin; nephew, Bret Bowlin and wife, Cindy Bowlin; niece, Toni Bowlin Mason; sister-in-law, Connie Jones Bowlin; two great nephews, and one great niece. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ed Miller Bowlin.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Danny's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ .

The funeral arrangements are being handled by Tennessee Cremations, Inc., located at 2768 Summer Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38122-3722.

Danny Bowlin will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all.

SO/RC/NWA pilot Commander John E. Goodman USN (ret.)

Update on services:   Captain John Goodman on March 3rd, 2PM at Falcon Field

This is a message from Captain John Goodman's wife Gerry on his Celebration of Life for those who would like to attend.

I wanted to let you all know that we are going to have a Celebration of Life for John Goodman on Sunday, March 3rd., at 2PM with beer, at Hanger 28D at Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Ga.  The updated information is in the message below. Thank you!  Gerry Goodman

It turns out that Gerry Goodman had already been in contact with John’s Navy buddies and informed them that the party would start at 2 PM. So guess what,, the party will start at 2 PM.  We are making arrangements to have the Leo Giles gate open from about 1:45 PM to about 2: 45 PM to allow non-KFFC folks to get in without issue. There is a road is just past KIEWIT on Dividend Dr, and the gate is there.   There will be a balloon or something to mark the entrance.

We will be planning a missing man four ship to open the ceremony. Then will have a mass gaggle of RVs make a pass over the hangar from west to east. John’s RV-10 will be in the lead. We will recover the flyers as rapidly as possible and get into the remembrance [party time] part of the ceremony. I will be asking the beer guys to bring a beer that John would enjoy to share. That includes just about any beer you can think of. As usual I will be encouraging guys to bring a six pack or four pack.  We have another surprise planned. It won’t be a surprise if I tell you what it is right now. Then food and wine. This is not a dinner or lunch function. Abby is providing wine, soft drinks and sandwiches. We are providing the beer.

Now for the best part. We need a cleaning crew to get the hangar ready. Once we know the approximate number of guests, we will able to collect tables and chairs. Report time for cleaning duty is 12 pm on Saturday the 2nd of March. Everyone helping with the clean up will get a pat on the back which should keep the participants glowing in the dark for weeks to come.

Any questions? FYI, we will be expecting around 80 guests so far. Please contact Donald Roberts if you have any questions about this Celebration of Life for Captain John Goodman. Thanks.

"Donald A. Roberts" < darinptc@comcast.net >

Plymouth-Wayzata Sun Sailor (MN) - Friday, January 26, 2024

Stephen "Steve" D. Towle, aged 91, of Orono, passed away on January 14, 2024.

Born on June 16, 1932, in Winnetka, IL, he was the third child of Julia and Julius Towle. Steve grew up in Winnetka, Illinois, and graduated from New Trier High School. He furthered his education through the ROTC program at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA.

Steve is preceded in death by his first spouse, Alice F. Towle, and is survived by his beloved spouse of 46 years, Janet "Stevie" Gilbert; his children, Steve (Margaret), Jeff (Kate), Barry (Debra); step-children, Chris (Clay), Diane (daughter-in-law), Lee, Ann, and Mitch; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces; and his dearest friends.

A distinguished pilot, Steve served in the U.S. Air Force and earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. His passion for aviation continued with a 33-year career as a pilot, ranking among the top 70 for Northwest Airlines. His fellow pilot and wingman, Chuck Leonard, said that in the Air Force, "No one ranked above him in terms of skillful performance as an aviator."

When off-duty from flying—and in his retirement—Steve's wife, Stevie, played a pivotal role in keeping him grounded with her steadfast support. Steve also fostered numerous lifelong friendships, from grade school on. He was known for his ability to bring people together and make things happen. His confident, proactive nature not only made him a top-notch pilot but also a family member and friend who supported and uplifted others, as evidenced by his generosity during tough times.

In addition to his aviation achievements, Steve was an avid real estate investor, captivated by the intricacies of acquiring and selling properties. The highlight of his investments was a shared horse farm with Roberta and Dick Schmidt, who remained close to Steve as caregivers and confidants.

Steve delighted in organizing events for family, neighbors, and friends that created lasting memories. For a dozen years, he convened his family annually in Lanesboro, MN to share fun relaxing, biking, canoeing, golfing, and attending the theater. He biked and canoed with his grandchildren well into his late 80s—and kept them laughing with his delightful sense of humor. He continued to try new things, participating in a book club and choir in his later years. His favorite moments were reminiscing with friends and family about shared experiences, his piloting adventures, and world travel.

In a musical tribute, his grandson Nate composed the song "F-89 Scorpion," immortalizing Stephen's legacy as a pilot of the historic fighter jet.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2024 at Lake Minnetonka Shores Chapel, 4515 Shoreline Dr., Spring Park, MN 55384. Memorial Service at 10:30am with a reception to follow.
