David E. O’Mara, Pilot

17th SOS, Phan Rang, 1969-70

I completed my degree at Memphis State University and was commissioned on 20 August 1965 through the AFROTC program. Upon completing pilot training at Del Rio, Texas in December 1966, I was assigned to duty as a B-52G copilot at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC.

Beginning in 1968, I flew 45 B-52 Arc Light missions over Vietnam from Guam, Okinawa, and Thailand.

Within days of returning to Seymour Johnson, I received orders to Vietnam in the C-123. I grew up as the son of a U. S. Navy Officer, so I knew not to whine or complain over what the military wanted of me. However, as a Captain, I realized almost everyone was negotiating for favors. So I told the assignments officer I had just returned from six months of flying Arc Light missions, that I considered myself a combatant, and I would gladly take any combat aircraft assignment the USAF had. A few weeks later I received orders for the AC-119G gunship. I did not then know I was embarking on the most meaningful year of my life.

Shadow Hijacking

I believe we were scheduled this night for a nine or ten o’clock departure for the second scheduled sortie of the evening. We had accomplished all preflight checks and procedures and were presently taxiing to the north end of the airfield for a south departure from Phan Rang. Tonight’s mission was a planned search and destroy sortie to somewhere in Corps II or Corps III of South Vietnam (Republic of Vietnam). South Vietnam was divided into four Corps or subdivisions, each denoted by Roman numerals, I – II – III – IV by the U.S. Army. I Corps started at the DMZ with II and III Corps sort of evenly divided in the middle of South Vietnam and finally, IV Corps, from Saigon south to the southern tip of the Mekong Delta………………………………………

James Cook Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lord & Stephens Funeral Home - East on Oct. 24, 2023.

James Allen Cook of Watkinsville, Georgia, passed away on October 20th after a brief battle with cancer. Jim was born in Mobile, Alabama, on February 3, 1941, to Allen Cook and Beryl Betterton Cook. After high school, Jim attended Auburn University where he met his future wife of 59 years, Janice Jones of Montevallo, Alabama.

Jim, a Navy ROTC cadet while at Auburn, was commissioned as an Ensign upon graduation in 1963. Selected for flight school he trained to fly light attack aircraft. Jim flew A-4 Skyhawks with VA-36, deploying twice to Vietnam in 1965 and 1968, and once to the Mediterranean Sea in 1967. After leaving active duty, he continued his Navy service in the reserves with VA-204. There he flew A-4 Skyhawks and A-7 Corsairs, eventually rising to the position of Commanding Officer of the squadron. Jim finished his Navy career in Atlanta and retired with the rank of Captain.

While serving in the Naval Reserves, Jim also began his career as an airline pilot. Active in civilian aviation for over 30 years, he flew first for Eastern Airlines and then Northwest Airlines, retiring in 2006. For more than 40 years, Jim would always tell anyone how truly lucky he was to be able to do something he loved so very much.

As much as he enjoyed aviation, Jim's first love was always for his family. Jim and Janice had one son, Brandon, in 1975, whom they raised predominately in Watkinsville. After college, Brandon followed in his father's footsteps and is currently a pilot for Delta Air Lines. In addition to his wife and son, Jim found great joy in time spent with his two grandsons, Holden and Nathan, and his daughter-in-law Karen. Whether it was holiday gatherings, school orchestra concerts, time spent at the lake, or helping out with Scout projects, "Papa" was always there.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law, Jim is survived by his wife, Janice, his son, Brandon, his daughter-in-law, Karen, and his grandsons, Holden and Nathan.

Military veteran, DL Capt. Timothy Ray Eby

June 9, 1944 - October 15, 2023

Notice of passing…..retired Delta pilot Captain Timothy Ray Eby, age 79.  Tim joined Delta Air Lines 11-6-1972 and was based DFW/030.  He is survived by his wife Judy, and by his children and their families.

Obituary information may be viewed online at https://www.harvesthillsfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Timothy-Eby/#!/Obituary

A brief notice is available at https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/timothy-eby-obituary?id=53357923

Obituary for Timothy Ray Eby

From a mischievous boy on an Ohio farm to an accomplished pilot, combat veteran, community leader, and much-loved husband, father, and grandfather (still with that impish grin and dry wit), Tim Eby lived a life of integrity, service, and, most of all, love and laughter.

Although Tim loved to tell a good story, he was not one to talk about his own accomplishments. So you might not know that he served in Vietnam with great bravery as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) in the Air Force or was a respected pilot for Delta Airlines for over 30 years. Instead, you probably heard stories that revolved around Tim’s relationships with others. He had a knack for connecting with people and was always focused on others, never himself. Most of all, everything he did revolved around his love for his family.

Tim and Judy grew up less than 30 minutes apart in Ohio but met on a train in Colorado, when Tim sat down next to Judy and never got up. Through 59 years of marriage, they raised three daughters and delighted in their four grandsons. Tim and Judy lived in many places during his Air Force career, ultimately making a home and raising their family first in Conroe, Texas, where they formed many life-long friendships, and then in Hico, Texas, where they truly found “home.” Tim loved the Hico community and got a big kick out of telling buddies visiting from out of town that they could just stop the first person they saw and ask where Tim Eby lived. (It worked.)

Tim served on the Hico school board and as a deacon in the Hico Church of Christ and was a mentor and friend to folks of all ages. He especially enjoyed encouraging young people who were interested in aviation. In his retirement years, Tim reconnected with many of his fellow FACs from his Air Force days and will always be fondly remembered as “Capt. Skinny.” Tim wrote beautifully about his combat experiences, and many of his writings were included in a published collection of FAC stories.

In addition to being a gifted writer, Tim could build just about anything, from a dollhouse to a kit car. In recent years, he created beautiful windchimes and wood carvings. He loved to sing, read voraciously, and single-handedly put a dent in the area’s feral hog population. During his many travels, he visited every continent except Antarctica (but he still liked Hico best). Tim’s interests and talents ranged far and wide – life with him was never boring!

A rare form of brain cancer drastically changed the last year of Tim’s life, but some things never changed – his deep and abiding faith, his patience and humility, his relentless love for his family, and that great wit and mischievous grin. Even in his final hours, he was full of gratitude and love. In a most fitting final gesture, he passed from this life at sunrise on a beautiful Sunday morning.

There will never be another person like Tim Eby, and his passing is a great loss. For his family and friends, it is an honor to carry his memory.

Please join Tim’s family in celebrating his life at HiCo Hall, 101 W. Ave. B, Hico, Texas 76457, on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m., with a memorial slideshow at 1:45 and services beginning at 2 p.m. Following the service, Tim will be buried with military honors at Fairy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Foster’s Home for Children (www.fostershome.org) or Blue Moon Sanctuary (http://linktr.ee/bluemoonsanctuary), two nonprofits close to Tim’s heart.

Lieutenant Colonel Donald Higgs Obituary

United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Donald “Nate” Higgs flew his last flight on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Our lives are forever changed. Nate, who his wife describes as “the best guy ever”, left home with the biggest smile on his face. He was so excited to go fly his new Van’s RV-8 aircraft. Unfortunately, he didn’t return home. He died doing what he loved.

Donald Nathan Higgs was born on July 16, 1980 to Donald and Julieanne Higgs. He was the oldest of five children. Nate graduated from Bonneville High School in 1998 and served an LDS Mission in Portugal. Nate met the love of his life Ashley, and they were married in 2004. Nate gained two wonderful sons that day, Skyler and Kade, and loved and raised them as his own. Ashley often joked that he married her for the boys, but Nate was always quick to correct her and said they were a package deal.

Nate’s passion in life was flying, and he wanted to be a pilot from a very young age. Nate joined the United States Air Force in 2002 to follow his dream, where he served for thirteen years. He became a decorated pilot receiving many awards. In 2019 he transitioned to Air National Guard after active duty and became an instructor pilot on the C-17. Nate was serving within the 183d Airlift Squadron under the 172d Airlift Wing in Jackson, Mississippi. It takes a special person to serve in the military for their country, giving up their family time, comfort, and safety for their country, ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life. We are grateful for his patriotism, brave efforts, and selfless acts of kindness. Anyone who met Nate or crossed paths with him knew that he was a good man and made instant friends and connections everywhere he went.

Nate began his career with Delta Air Lines in January of 2020, flying an Airbus A320 as first officer.

Nate was the best dad to Skyler and Kade, and Papa to Titan, his very best bud. He loved teasing and antagonizing the boys and challenging them. He was the best example and leader to all.

Nate is survived by his wife, Ashley; sons, Skyler and Kade; grandson, Titan; parents, Donald and Julieanne Higgs; siblings, Neldon and (Mandy) Higgs, Aimee and (Dave) Ferguson, Jace and (Lori) Higgs, Katelan and (Nick) Gale; in laws, Taryn and (Rick) Carlson, William Andersen, Amy and (Ruston) Monson, Angie and (Mac) Erickson and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Nate is preceded in death by three grandparents and a brother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, pay it forward, help someone in need and be kind because that’s what Nate would do.

Services:    Public visitation will be held Monday, October 16, 2023, at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South Roy, Utah 84067 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Public visitation will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Kemp Jet Services, 4282 South 1650 West Ogden, Utah 84405 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am and a funeral service to follow.  Interment will immediately follow at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd.

A Celebration of Nate’s Life will be held following the interment at Kemp Jet Service.

Special thanks to Lindquist Mortuary, Florist Expressions, the 183d Airlift Squadron, Delta Air Lines, Kemp Jet Services, Nilson Homes, Warehouse 22, Model Linen, Courtney Bowthorpe, Mike Nicholls and many, many family members, friends and neighbors who have reached out, sent flowers, and provided food, comfort, and love for our family. We will forever be grateful for your generosity.

CENTERVILLE, Utah — The pilot of a small plane was killed Tuesday morning when the aircraft crashed off Legacy Parkway in Centerville.

Officials originally believed two people were on the single-engine plane at the time of the crash, but now confirm only 43-year-old Donald Nathan Higgs from Plain City was on board when it went down at 11:35 a.m. in a field near the 1500 North exit……………….

Ackerson said Higgs was able to send out a transmission that there were issues with the plane moments before it went down. Police remain unsure of Higgs's flight plan before the crash, but say he was flying a Van's RV-8.

"We do believe he was out of Sky Park, but we're not positive on that either other than it went nose first into the ground," Ackerson added…………………………
