….belated notice….from family we have just learned of the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Gurves Rayburn Hudson, age 82.  Ray joined Delta Air Lines 06-13-1966.  He is survived by his wife Phyllis and by his children and their families.  Please see notice below as received from the Hudson family.

Death of Delta Airlines Pilot Gurves (Ray) Hudson

“I wanted to let you know that Gurves (Ray) Hudson passed away on March 4, 2022.  He was a pilot with Delta Airlines for 30 years, retiring in 1997.  He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and his son, Steve (Candy), and daughter, Tamara Ashker (Tommy). Ray was born May 11,1939 and was 82 years old when he died.  He fought bravely against the debilitating disease of dementia.  He was a loving, kind, generous man who lived a good life and will be greatly missed!”

From friends and colleagues, we learn of the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Stephen Sachs, age 79. Steve joined Delta Air Lines 11-06-1972.  He is survived by his wife Brenda, and by his daughters and their families.

Steve’s friend Capt. Ballance writes:  I wanted to tell you that Steve Sachs passed away, from complications associated with cancer, on December 20. He fought the disease for eighteen years, and I never heard him complain. I first flew with Steve on the DC-8, and that spawned a friendship of nearly forty years.  He flew Army OV-1 Mohawks in Vietnam, followed by a tour at the US Embassy in Tehran  flying a C-47. Upon release from active duty, Steve attended and earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee. Shortly thereafter he went to work for Delta, commencing a career that spawned some thirty-one years. Never one to rest on his laurels, he became a licensed A&P mechanic, followed shortly by an IA designation that enabled him to perform annual inspections on airplanes. He restored and flew a Stearman biplane for over thirty-five years until several weeks before his demise. He was always generous with his time and skillset in terms of lending his talents to others afflicted with the vintage aircraft passion.  I am attaching the funeral home obituary in hopes that you would forward it to your email lists.

Stephen L. Sachs December 1, 1943 - December 20, 2022

 

Steve spent his childhood in Norris, TN. He attended Florence State (now UNA) where he met his wife, Brenda. After graduating, they were married. He spent a 2-yr tour in Germany as an army lieutenant then returned to attend flight school. After flight school and a transition course in the OV-1 Mohawk, he had a tour in Vietnam. Even though he left active duty, he remained in the National guard for20 years. Upon return from Vietnam, Steve and Brenda were stationed in Teheran, Iran. After returning from Iran, Steve got a Masters degree in Transportation /Economics from UT. He began his career with Delta in 1972 and retired in 2003. He never took a day of sick leave.

 

Steve Loved his family, aviation, church family and country. He had an A&P and an IA . He restored many old aircraft and did annual inspections for aircraft. He was happy when he could help others keep their airplane in the air.

 

Steve loved his church family. He was an usher, vestry member, member of the Bishops Council and helped in many other ways.

 

Steve is survived by his wife Brenda, daughters, Sharon Aut (RD) and Jennifer Brosas (Mile); brothers, David Sachs and Crawford Sachs (Rowena); sister, Patti Farrar; five granddaughters, Julia , Christina, Amanda, Kim, and Kristen; and great grandsons, Walker and Paxton.

 

Steve will be missed by many.

 

Service will be at Paul's Episcopal Church in Murfreesboro, TN on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 1 pm. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

 

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to either the Nashville Rescue Mission or St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Obituary  :  Richard Arthur Shandor, age 70, of Watertown was born into eternal life on Sunday, December 18, 2022, after a long battle with Dementia.

 

A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Watertown. Family and friends may gather at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Military honors, conducted by American Legion Post 189, will take place following the mass. Burial will take place at Saint Clare's Catholic Cemetery in North Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lake Country Caring in Hartland, where Richard often volunteered, are greatly appreciated. Rich was born on March 9, 1952 to Elmer and Marjorie Shandor (nee Lynch) in Pittsburgh, PA. His love of aviation began as he watched aircraft at the municipal airport in his neighborhood. Rich started taking flying lessons at the young age of 14. Richard would go on to the University of Pittsburgh to major in Physics and Economics. After graduation, Rich joined the United States Air Force as an Officer. He flew the KC-135 Refueling Tanker before moving to the F4-D fighter jet and various other aircraft. While stationed in Goldsboro, NC, he met his loving wife MaryPat (nee Champion). They would later move to Fairborn, OH and adopt their two children, Benjamin and Katherine. Richard and his family then moved to Louisville, KY where he flew cargo for UPS. The family settled in Hartland, WI and Rich began his 20 year career with Delta Airlines after completing his time with the Air Force Reserves. He was always humbly proud of his family and his career.

 

Rich was a devoted husband, father and Buppa who enjoyed taking his family on trips all over the world. He had a strong faith in the Catholic Church and was looking forward to eternal life in Heaven. Some of Richard’s hobbies included martial arts, firearms, HAM radio, aviation and his beloved 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo.

 

Richard is preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Shandor, his brothers Allan and George Shandor, and his parents Elmer and Marjorie Shandor. He is survived by his wife MaryPat, daughter Katherine Keepman (Adam), his three grandchildren, Maggie, Theo and Betsy Keepman, and many other family and friends. He is loved beyond measure and will be missed intensely.

Obituary : David William James

July 22, 1942 - December 16, 2022

David William James, age 80, of Punta Gorda, Florida and Minneapolis, Minnesota passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022. David was born on July 22, 1942. David attended St. Thomas Academy and the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, MN. David worked as a pilot for Northwest Airlines for 35 years, including many years as a 747 captain and flight instructor. He and his wife lived in Burnsville, MN for 25 years. After his retirement from Northwest Airlines, they moved to Punta Gorda, Florida and then split their time between Florida and Minnesota.

 

David was a skilled do-it-yourselfer, craftsman, and enjoyed remodeling homes. He was incredibly generous with his time and his talents, always being willing to help and teach others. When he wasn’t fixing something or helping someone, you would find him reading a book, going for a walk, learning something new, or spending time with friends.  He was also an avid foodie and enjoyed trying new recipes in the kitchen.

 

David was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy James, his son, Kevin James, and his parents, Keith and Mary James. David is survived by his children, Greg James, Lori Menalis, Josh (Krista) James, and Elizabeth (Brian) Studenski; his grandchildren, Matthew Menalis, Emma Menalis, Amelia James, and Eloise James; his sisters Barbara Zagrodnik, Annie Mattson, and his brother, Dan (Joyce) James.
