Word has reached us with news of the passing of retired Delta Flight Attendant Mrs. Barbara Jean North, age 87.  Barbara was the widow of Delta pilot Captain Donald Beryl North.  Don joined Delta Air Lines 12-03-1956 and retired in 1991.  Barbara is survived by her sons and their families.

Mrs. Barbara Jean North, age 87, of Newnan, passed away August 19, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Beryl North. She was born February 22, 1936 to the late Chester and Hannah Hinderacker. She is survived by her sons, David North, Kevin North and his wife, Lynn, Steve North; grandchildren, Paige Warden, Blake North, Austin North, Hayden North, Emily North, Brendan North, Brian Wheeler, Jessica Townsend, Lindsey Wheeler; great grandchildren, Jackson Warden, Thomas Warden, Calen Townsend, and Natalie North. A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 2 o’clock Resurrection Lutheran Church with Rev. Jennifer Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at Resurrection Lutheran Church.  Greg and Nina Berry were together for 50 years and married for 47. A loving husband, dad, grandpa and friend; he cherished his family and lifelong friendships, while also befriending new ones and every dog he met. He served as his daughters’ swim club president and basketball coach. From a family of Croatian fishermen, he enjoyed commercial and recreational fishing his entire life. Greg was aways ready to lend a hand and help others. During time off, he helped his contractor uncle build houses on Bainbridge Island, including the home he raised his family in. He spent his retirement days building his workshop and woodworking.

   Known for his calm demeanor, sharp wit, humor and kindness, Greg was a truly genuine human being with a heart of gold. It was never about him; it was always about family, friends and colleagues he cared about. In typical pilot fashion, Greg passed on National Aviation Day. He wrote the following parting message to share with his friends and colleagues.

   Nothing unique about me or my circumstances, except for now having both perspectives. When hearing of something like this in the past I might have hesitated sending a text or email thinking it too impersonal or insignificant and would just be adding clutter to an already overloaded frequency. I quickly learned I was wrong and completed a hard 180 accepting each as a personal gift and delivered directly to me to boot! Singularly, each might appear to be but a small ray of light, but in concert the illumination best expressed to my fellow aviators as “the peek worth a thousand scans.” The answer to what I needed was simple: nothing. I already had been given a sample supply by my family, friends and now the superheroes known as caregivers.

   If you’re not an aviator, look for someone with a big watch nearby who should be able to explain it to you… but NOT TOO BIG… because that person won’t have a clue. Every hand extended, kind word, visit, phone call and messages provided me comfort and strength. How can darkness in a person’s life so quickly switch to brightness and joy without the full acceptance of love and friendship, because that’s exactly what happened in my life, through all your graciousness and love. I want to thank each and every one of you for granting me the peek worth a thousand scans.

Obituary

Gregory James Berry passed away on August 19, 2023 at his home with his wife and two daughters by his side after a hard-fought 4.5 month battle with glioblastoma. He was 70 years old. 

Born August 26, 1952 at the Winslow Clinic on Bainbridge Island to John and Carmen Berry, Greg grew up in Eagle Harbor with his two brothers and other long-time island family friends. A strong work ethic was instilled in him at an early age. He mowed the lawns at The Bainbridge Country Club beginning in middle school and held the job through high school. Greg loved playing football and basketball as a kid and earned varsity letters in both sports. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1970 as class salutatorian.

Greg went on to earn his degree from Seattle University in Business Administration with a minor in Economics. Summer breaks were spent fishing up in Alaska to finance college and flying lessons at Boeing Field. He obtained his Private Pilot’s License at age 19. After graduation, he pursued his passion for aviation and joined the Navy where he flew the A-6 Intruder. In 1982, he was hired by Northwest Airlines and was a commercial pilot for 30 years flying primarily Boeing 747s while also serving as a Navy Reservist for 20 years. 

Greg was always one to lend a hand and help others out. During time off, he’d help his contractor uncle build houses on Bainbridge Island, including the home he raised his family in and later spent retirement days building his workshop and woodworking. He served as his daughters’ swim club president and also coached basketball. From a family of Croatian fishermen, he enjoyed commercial and recreational fishing his entire life. 

Loving husband, dad, grandpa and friend; he cherished his family and lifelong friendships, while also befriending new ones and every dog he met. Greg and Nina Berry were together for 50 years and married for 47. He was an amazing husband and dad, but an even better grandpa. He could carry a serious conversation but was always ready to crack a good dad joke. Above all, he was an intent listener. Known for his calm demeanor, sharp wit, humor and kindness; he was a truly genuine human being with a heart of gold. 

Greg was preceded in death by his parents John and Carmen Berry, his brother Ron Berry, his in-laws Felix Sr. and Asuncion Narte. He is survived by his loving wife Nina, daughters Angela (Michael) and Natalie, beloved grandchildren Max, Jolie, Gia and Lucy, brother Tom Berry, eight sister and brother-in-laws, twelve nieces and nephews and extended family.

 All are welcome to attend his Memorial Service on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 10:00am (rosary beginning at 9:15am) in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church: 1310 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110, with a Celebration of Life reception at Kiana Lodge: 14976 Sandy Hook Road Northeast, Poulsbo, WA 98370 immediately following the church service.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,  

 

 

From Greg's family,  

"It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news that our dearly loved

Greg/Bear/Dad/Gargo, passed away on Saturday, August 19th, after a

hard-fought battle with glioblastoma. He was at home, exactly where he

wanted to be, with my mom, sister and I at his bedside. We were fortunate to

spend 145 days with him following his diagnosis. 145 is a significant angel

number and his Navy squadron number. In typical pilot fashion, it was

fitting that he passed on National Aviation Day."

Obituary : U.S. Veteran, Edward Peter Javorski, uncle, and friend to many passed away on March 4, 2023, at the age of 92. Ed was born May 21, 1930, in Saint Paul Minnesota and spent his time there growing up with his two siblings. Ed graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in Saint Paul and in 1951 enlisted in the Navy. After his honorable service, Ed looked to the airline industry where he wanted to become a pilot to see the world. His eyesight kept him from captaining the plane, so he pivoted and became a flight attendant working for Northwest Airlines. This is where Ed gained lifelong friends. When Ed was not flying with these friends, he was creating memorable parties at his Magnolia bungalow in Seattle overlooking the waterways to the Ballard Locks.

 

Ed had fond memories of participating in the 1978 Victoria-Maui Yacht race aboard the “Jeanoyce”, a 50.10’ Ketch sailboat. Ed’s primary job was none other than in the galley, overseeing feeding the crew of five, restocking the food supplies as well as grilling up the days catch all the while racing to Maui.

 

Ed retired after 38 years with Northwest Airlines but continued to travel to many countries and spending almost every year for a few weeks at his beloved Vallarta Torre timeshare in Puerto Vallarta. He made several trips to Tarnogora and Zamosc, Poland to visit the family of his Aunt Tekla. When Ed was not traveling, he could be found working on his bungalow or in his garden or working on a friend’s house or in a friend’s garden. Ed was happiest serving others and it showed in his work, his parties, and his faith. Ed was a devout Catholic attending St Margaret of Scotland and St James Cathedral in Seattle.

 

Ed wore his title of Uncle (Unk) very seriously to so many-both related and unrelated. Ed rarely missed a birthday, holiday or family gathering, and he always came with a bounty of gifts and platters of food. When Ed spent Christmas in Minnesota, he would pack up suitcases full of decorations, presents and fresh cut evergreen boughs he gathered from…let’s just say a few Seattle Parks received an occasional pruning. He made everything special.

 

In 2014 Ed moved from his home in Magnolia to Horizon House and he still routinely got together with his flight attendant friends every Sunday for church, then making their way to The Shanty on Elliott for Sunday brunch (until it closed) then brunched at Horizon House.

 

Ed was able to live out his life in Seattle, where he wanted to be, thanks to the loving care and support of his Seattle family. Ed is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Minnesota, California, and Poland.

 

Ed was preceded in death by his father Peter (born Krakow Poland), mother Helen (born Tarnagora Poland), brother Stan Javorski, sister Delores Heppner, and nephew Randy Heppner.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on June 28, 2023 at 11 AM, Saint Odilia Catholic Church, 3495 Victoria St N, Shoreview, Minnesota. Visitation at church one hour prior. Inurnment following mass at Calvary Cemetery.  Memorials preferred to Feed My Starving Children, Alzheimer's Association, or donor's choice.

In Tribute To My Husband,

Richard McNeil Edwards. Born in Milan, MI, on August 24, 1938, Passed in The Villages, FL, on JUNE 24-2023

I dreaded the day I would write this and thought I was prepared to do it. That is not the case. When you watch someone you love so much daily deteriorating and in pain, you want them to go peacefully. He did that, and Cornerstone Hospice was there to make it pain-free. What a blessing they were. We had the Emerald Team, and everyone was marvelous at their job. He has been a Freedom Point Place Memory Care resident for two months. He thought he was in an apartment building and sometimes called it his condo. I can't say enough about Freedom Point Place and its employees. They treated him with such respect and kindness. In the end, the hospice nurses told us many employees came to say goodbye. The children spent time there with their dad and Grampy, and we were treated royally.

I have received so many notes from around this country, and everyone commented on Dick's dry sense of humor and his kindness; they said he is a true gentleman. He had so many friends. Born and raised in Milan, Michigan, and returned there when we married and raised our children there. He was always the oldest Dad at all of Ryan's school activities. We laughed about it. He served on Milan City Council, and we still talk about all the great pig roasts that Joe O'Donnell had for the community. Our airline friends came from all over to attend. He made many friends after having been with the three airlines, North Central, Republic, and Northwest, for 30 years and acting as chief pilot for the last several years. Well, maybe for a few, he wasn't their friend. Ha

Living at Ebb Tide Condominium on New Smyrna Beach and serving that community on the Board of Directors. We have the most memorable memories of our friends and our time there. We never stopped missing the beach and our friends. It was also near my family, who he loved so much.

Devils Lake, Manitou Beach, MI, was his favorite place. Neighbors there became family, and we watched our kids, the neighbor kids, and all their kids grow up to be and become beautiful families. Our saddest day was when he realized he couldn't drive to FL or maintain our cottage to his high expectations.

Lastly, moving from the beach after three hurricanes, we came to a lovely spot called The Villages, FL (No, we did not become swingers, and only a few of the stories are true!). We were the luckiest people to have moved into a brand-new Village of Hemingway and had the best neighborhood anyone could ask for. We gained another family.

He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed playing golf with my Aunt Ann (who will be 94 and still playing) and my cousins. I was, as always, the neighbor lady who wanted to have a party. Nothing changed but his health. The second saddest day was when he realized he couldn't physically play golf.

And here we are today after many years of back pain. He is at peace. He will be missed. Thank you all for being his friend.

Richard is survived by his wife, Sally Quinton Edwards, of 52 years. His daughter Kimberly (Tom) Probst of Longmont, CO. Son, Ryan M Edwards of Denver, CO, and Granddaughter Eve Menne Edwards of San Diego, CA. One brother Dennis (Diane) Edwards of Cincinnati, OH. Nephew Derek (Terri) Edwards and his family. He was brother and Uncle Dick to "several" of Sally's family, who will miss him terribly. He leaves behind many cousins from the Harold Spears and James Edwards families.
