She always spoke of growing up in a four room home in East Nashville, her mother's coffee biscuits, and tagging along on her siblings' dates.

NWA Capt. Sigwulf ‘Sig’ Hermann

Sigwulf Hermann
1940 ~ 2020
Sig Hermann NWA
Captain Sigwulf Hermann, age 80, died May 25, 2020 in Seattlethree days after suffering a massive stroke.
Sig may have had one of the most unique early backgrounds of any NWA pilot. He was born March 3, 1940 in a German Army hospital at Peenemünde, Germany to Rudolf and Ruthilt (Singer) Hermann. Sig was the second of four siblings.
Rudolf Hermann, Sig’s father, was the Director of the Supersonic Wind Tunnel Laboratory for the German Army Rocket Experimental Station in Peenemünde. Sig was three years old when on the night of 17/18 August 1943, RAF Air Marshall ‘Bomber Harris’ launched a 600 aircraft raid by three RAF Air Groups against Peenemunde. This was one of the RAF’s largest bombing raids in retaliation for V-1 & V-2 rocket raids. Family lore reports that Sig’s father quickly moved his family post haste to rural Bavaria.
By the end of WWII Sig’s father was the creator of a 7,000 mph wind tunnel at Kochel, Germany in the Bavarian Alps. As the occupying Russian forces nudged ever closer to Bavaria, Rudolf Hermann initiated contact with the US Army. Once the Army realized this man was the chief aerodynamicist for the V-2 rocket, the Army flew him to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio under the umbrella of Project Paperclip. There is no doubt that Wernher Von Braun had a role in bringing Sig’s father to Dayton. Soon thereafter Ruthilt Hermann (mother) and her two children boarded a U.S. Navy troop ship loaded with returning U.S. military personnel. At first the voyage across the Atlantic in a crowded troop ship must have been frightening, but the American G.I.s proved both kind and helpful. This was just one of many events that assured Rudolph Hermann the United States offered his family a unique opportunity for freedom for his family.
In 1945 Sig’s father was employed as a consultant with the Air Engineering Development Division at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. In 1950, Rudolf Hermann left Wright Patterson AFB and joined the faculty in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He served as both a researcher and teaching professor at the graduate level.
Many former Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) based NWA pilots will remember the WWII era Gopher Ordinance Works east of Rosemount in Dakota County. That facility was deeded to the University of Minnesota in 1948 and a portion of those grounds were designated the U. of M. Rosemont Aeronautical Laboratory. Rudolf Hermann worked at this laboratory, while also teaching at the University. Young Sig, now age 8, resided in one of the 25 staff houses on the grounds of the former Dupont facility. In time the family settled into a permanent home in West St. Paul, MN where he attended Henry Sibley High School. An active student, Sig participated in debate and captained both the basketball and track teams.
Sig graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Political Science, where he simultaneously completed the Air Force ROTC program as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force. Shortly thereafter Sig entered USAF pilot training (UPT) at Williams AFB, AZ. KC-135 transition training followed at Castle AFB, CA.
Dow AFB, Maine was Sig’s first post training combat squadron. From Dow AFB he rotated temporarily to Eielson AFB at Fairbanks, Alaska. Flying the KC-135 for Strategic Air Command from Eielson during this era speaks volumes about unique recon and refueling missions over the Bering Sea near the Soviet Union. In addition, Sig flew refueling support for a variety of aircraft over Vietnam. Sig seemed to enjoy his military flying.
After fulfilling his military obligation, Sig separated from the Air Force and returned to Minnesota where he was hired by Northwest Airlines on February 3, 1969. Sig began his career flying second officer (S/O) on the Boeing 727. In early 1970 Sig checked out as S/O on the Boeing 707 series with a crew base assignment to Seattle. The infamous 1970s strikes followed.
Sig was hit hard by the layoffs that followed the BRAC strike. Being fluent in German, he found employment with ‘Air Commerz’, a short-lived German charter company operating the 707-138B from Hamburg. In 1972 NWA recalled Sig to SEA as a 707/320 S/O.
During that time Sig lived with pilot pals in a home on Lake Sammamish near Seattle. One of these friends introduced Sig to Karen ‘Kitty’ Symington. The couple hit it off and in 1973 bonded together in marriage. Sig and Kitty gave birth to two daughters, Anna and Kristina Hermann. Sig enjoyed family life with Kitty, their free time was spent traveling, boating, gardening, and visiting a ‘get away’ near Darrington, WA.
Sig’s NWA flying career focused on the Boeing 727, 707, 757, and the DC-10. His initial captain checkout was on the Boeing 757. The DC-10 was a favorite for Sig. He flew all three crew positions on that airplane and retired in 1998 as a Honolulu based DC-10 Captain.
In his mid-fifties Sig developed a heart arrhythmia which lead to a medical retirement. In retirement Sig stayed active with travel and boating, his retirement also permitted him to fully participate with local choirs. In 2003 Karen became ill with a rare type of Parkinson’s Disease. For five years Sig was her loving caregiver, tragically Karen died on June 27, 2007.
About ten years ago Sig met Janet Rogge, MD who eventually became his partner. Janet was immensely popular with the North Puget Sound Retired NWA Pilot’s group. She and Sig were well matched and became a great team. In 2016 Sig had an accidental fall scrapping his leg which caused a MRSA infection (Staphylococcus aureus) resulting in hospitalization in the ICU ward. Janet intervened with Sig’s treatment protocols and may have saved his life. The following November Janet herself suffered a serious stroke. Again, Sig found himself totally involved in a supportive caregiver role. Janet’s recovery was slow.
Sig Hermann Janet Rogge 2

Family and friends were totally shocked to learn on May 21th2 that Sig himself had a severe aneurysmal stroke. After four days in intensive care at Swedish Hospital Sig died on May 25, 2020 – Memorial Day.
Sig is survived by his partner Janet Rogge, daughters Anna Hermann and Kristina Hermann, brother Ingolf and sister Aulgund. Sig’s older sister Hiltrun preceded Sig in death, she also perished of an aneurysmal stroke.
One of our pilot wives summed up our respect for Sig by saying, “Sig was one of the good guys and his absence will leave a huge hole in our hearts.” How true, how true.
(- Bill Day)

Obituary…..
Theodore “Ted” Graham Morrison passed away peacefully June 10, 2020 at the age of 73. Ted and his family took comfort in being by his side, after a hard-fought battle with cancer, now at peace in Heaven. A seeker of the truth, fiercely loyal, and generous to a fault. When dining with Ted paying the tab was tough, and extreme tactics were to be deployed in order to ever see the bill. Never a man of luxury, although of exquisite taste, especially in cuisine – Ted’s true pride came from the love of his family, and companionship of a lifetime of great friends. His sense of humor was always just behind his trademark moustache. Ted is survived by his beloved wife Kris Finnigan, with whom he shared the last eleven years of his life; two daughters, Lara Morrison-Wanke and Michele Morrison, brother John Morrison, and sisters Marian Morrison and JeanMarie Morrison-Morrison. He was a beaming grandparent to Alec, Bowen and Riley. He is preceded in death by his parents Norma and Walton “Bud” Morrison, both native Oregonians.
Ted raised two beautiful daughters with wife Susan Morrison, sharing decades together forging a wonderful family, and building a home in Woodinville, WA. He raised his daughters to be culturally aware and to celebrate the diversity he had seen all over the world. Ted’s career choice did not fall far from the tree: his parents were Pearl Harbor survivors, and Bud’s subsequent Naval career spanned the world. Ted was immediately introduced to a life of travel as the family moved around the world to new duty assignments, and he developed a talent for quickly gaining friends in each new locale.
Ted was born on December 17, 1946 in sunny San Diego, CA. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Political Science, having earned a coveted Navy ROTC scholarship, and later completed his Master’s in Psychology. Upon graduation from OSU he received his commission and headed off to flight school in Pensacola to earn his wings. He formed a lifelong bond with his squadron mates from VP-17, his well-earned call sign “Badger” exemplified his grit, strength of resolve, and tenacious fighting spirit. His vigor and endurance carried on to the rugby pitch during his Navy years. Ted’s decorated military career led to him becoming an Advance Training Instructor, which included time on the supercarrier USS America of the famed Kitty Hawk-class fleet. He continued his call to duty as a Naval Reserve Officer, retiring from his service to our nation as Lieutenant Commander. The family is deeply appreciative of the many squadron mates from VP-17 who have shared so many memories. Ted’s first wife, Marta Heffner, remains honorary Lady of the VP-17 squadron to this day. Following his naval career, Ted continued to travel the world as a commercial airline pilot, including stints with Braniff and Northwest. Prior to his retirement as Captain from Delta airlines, he managed to plot and complete his “bucket list” item to circumnavigate the globe. His passion for flying extended to his embracing food and culture of his destinations, with a particular fondness for Asian culture and cuisine. He traveled abroad in search of the best food and art he could find, always finding himself most “at home” in the Pacific Northwest. When dining out, Ted would often arrive ahead of the party, seeking out the head chef to get the “real scoop” on what was going on in the kitchen – always as an act of admiration for skill - and never to be critical. Ted’s generosity knew no bounds. Always based on everyone enjoying time together, whether with family or the boys. Condo time at Lake Chelan was no exception and friends and family alike can take heart in having spent time with him there – truly in his happy place whether on the golf course, enjoying the local fare, or out on the water. A celebration of life will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton on Wednesday July 1st at 10:00. A virtual viewing experience will be available for all who are unable to attend. A private Military funeral service will be held on Thursday July 2nd at Tahoma National Cemetery.

Obituary……………….. William Peter Gerrior

Creative, irreverent & generous, Willie was a pilot, a fisherman, and a winemaker, and it was clear he never met a stranger.

Will Gerrior was born in Boston on December 5, 1938 and died at home on Vashon on June 3, 2020. He was diagnosed a few weeks earlier with advanced pancreatic cancer, and spent his last days with his loving family on his farm on Vashon.

At the age of 18 he joined the Air Force as a mechanic, but learned to fly at a private flight school. He turned a part-time gig flying crop-dusters into a career with the airlines, retiring in 2000 as Captain with Delta Airlines. In 1986 he and his wife Karen started Vashon Winery, which they sold after 25 years, having won several awards for their Washington grown wines. He met Karen in 1968, when he was flying the Alaska-Seattle route for PNA, and running a somewhat illegal side-gig of bringing frozen crab in on his flights and selling it - just to friends, of course. She agreed to look the other way if he would supply her with a box, and he was smitten.

Fly-fishing was among his many passions, and he stocked a trout pond on his property where he taught countless children how to fish. He was a volunteer fire fighter and EMT, past President of the Vashon Sportsman's Club, and was an airport Commissioner for the Vashon Municipal airport.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his son Chance (Lisa), grandson Gerald, sister Marianne, brother Gerald, and many nieces and nephews. We will miss his stories at family gatherings, wondering how he managed to survive his childhood. Just when you thought you'd heard them all, he'd surprise you with a new one.

No formal services will be at this time but donations can be made to the Vashon Sportsmen Education Association or to your favorite outdoor organization.

Obituary of Hall Alexander Martin Sr.……………
Mr. Martin passed away after a courageous multi-year battle with cancer on June 20, 2020.  Hall Alexander Martin was born on February 8, 1936, just minutes after his identical twin brother David, to Stella Harmon Martin (1914-2002) and Arthur Allen Martin (1909-1979) of Gastonia NC. As a youth he played sports and had a paper route. Hall also developed a love for music which he undoubtedly got from his mother who played the piano and organ at their church, Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church.
In high school he played the tuba. After high school Hall spent a year at Appalachian State University studying music, then transferred to the University of South Carolina where he earned an Associate’s degree. While in college he met Lillian Longfellow Hickman whom he married in Raleigh on Aug. 6, 1960. After 2 years of college Hall began a flying career that would span 4 decades. He joined the U.S. Navy under the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) program, earned his wings and flew the supersonic F-8 Crusader. He made several cruises on the aircraft carrier Saratoga before leaving active duty in 1964. He later left the Naval Reserves at the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Hall and Lillian settled their family in the Atlanta area where in November of 1964 Hall became a pilot at Delta Air Lines. In the late 1980’s he served as an instructor pilot and eventually Program Manager of the DC-8, DC-9 and MD-82 fleets. His retirement flight in February 1996 had his entire family aboard including grandchildren with both his brother David and son Bud in the cockpit with him.
Hall was a loving family man who was always present at his children’s activities.  He always had boats and he loved golf; scoring 2 hole-in-ones! He and Lillian found a passion for genealogy which led to her joining the DAR, Colonial Dames and Huguenot Society and Hall joining the Sons of the American Revolution where he served as Registrar, Genealogist and President of the Lyman Hall chapter and member of the Color Guard. He remained an active member until his passing. Following the passing of Lillian in 2008, Hall married Joyce Goodwin of Columbia, S.C. They lived in Flowery Branch and were members of Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church. He was very faithful to his church and had a strong lifelong relationship with the Lord.
Hall is survived by his wife Joyce, brother David Martin of Marietta GA, sister Nancy (Jim) Saunders of Gastonia NC, children Carolyn and Scott Snead of Suwanee GA, Martha and Scott Carruthers of Cumming GA, Hall Jr. “Bud” and Katy Martin of Newnan GA, and step-daughter Wendy (Scott) Huray. His beloved grandchildren include Brock (Lauren) Snead, Alex Snead, Hall III “Trey” Martin, Will (Tess) Martin, Garrett Cardoso, Brandon Cardoso, Katherine Martin, Lilly Cardoso, Samantha Huray, Jack Huray, and great-grandson Weston Snead.

Obituary…………..George Tate Blair, of Bellevue, WA, died on April 28, 2020, at his home after a long battle with Thyroid cancer. He was 77 years old. George was born on June 13, 1942 in Lewistown, Montana. He was the son of Thomas and Edith Blair, raised on a farm in Brooks, MT. He attended Fergus County High School in Lewistown, MT. It was there he met his future wife of 56 years, Judy Rolfsness. After completing high school, George attended Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. He and Judy married in 1963. The following year, he took the opportunity to attend a flight training school in Billings, MT. In 1966, at age 24, George was hired by Northwest Airlines and his career as a commercial airline pilot began. He ultimately became Captain of the 747-400. His 36 years as a pilot was the beginning of an adventurous life, living in St. Paul, MN, Oahu, HI and then settling and building a custom home in Bellevue, WA with his wife Judy, daughter, Pam and son Greg.

George not only loved to fly and travel, he loved nature, making him a huge Wildlife and National Park advocate. He was an outdoor enthusiast, a runner, a hiker and a great water and snow skier. He loved classic cars, air shows and enjoyed the Pacific Northwest with his boat and camper. He read voraciously, keeping up with world and political news. His favorite hobby of all, however, was being a Grandfather to his two granddaughters. George spent his active life giving generously to those around him, and was a loyal friend. No matter how far away they lived from each other, George made time for his many friends across the country. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his gentle manner, his dry humor, watching the Blue Angels above Lake Washington and his love and appreciation for a beautiful sunset and a gorgeous moonrise.

The family suggests remembrances to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
