James Gatz Obituary
James Robert Gatz, known to nearly everyone as "Gates", lived a full and remarkable life defined by family, service, hard work, and a lifelong sense of adventure.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Robert and Helen Gatz, Gates was the oldest of three sons. He graduated from Shorewood High School in 1960, where he was an accomplished track athlete and held the state record in the 880-yard run for several years. His success earned him a track scholarship to Marquette University, where he graduated in 1965.

At his father's suggestion, Gates took a flying lesson and was immediately hooked. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1966 and became a C-130 Pilot, flying west around the world three times and serving two tours in Vietnam.

While attending Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, Gates met Connie Collett over Thanksgiving weekend in 1971. The connection was immediate. Just 31 days later he asked her, "How 'bout you marry me?" Connie said yes, and they were married in May 1972. After living in Newport News, Virginia, Gates and Connie made their home in Montgomery, where they adopted their son, Robert Brent.

Gates joined Delta Air Lines in 1976 and retired in 2002 as a Boeing 767 Captain. But flying was hardly his only pursuit. Along the way, he flew with Maxwell Air Force Reserve, managed a cattle farm, and earned his law degree from Jones Law School in Montgomery. Though he never practiced law, he liked to joke that law school was a good way to make sure his brain was still functioning.

In 2012, Gates and Connie moved to Fairhope, Alabama, a place he loved and where he made many friends.

As accomplished as Gates was, those closest to him remember him most for his character. He was a man of integrity, generosity, faith, and loyalty. If Gates said he was going to do something, he did it. He quietly helped others, stood beside his friends when they needed him, and deeply loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

Gates passed away on October 22, 2026, at his home in Fairhope, Alabama.

He is survived by his loving wife, Connie; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Stanfield; his grandchildren, Robert and Elizabeth Gatz; brothers, Tom and Mike Gatz; and many cherished friends whose lives were enriched by his friendship.

Funeral services will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 370 S. Section Street, Fairhope, AL, on Thursday, November 12, 2026. There will be a time of visitation beginning at 10AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM. Interment will follow at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, AL.

Those wishing to honor Gates may consider a donation in his memory to a charity of your choice.

DL Capt. Bryant Evans Massey

 ~ IN MEMORY ~

DL Capt. Bryant Evans Massey
April 1983 ~ June 2026

Noted in the ALPA AIR LINE PILOT magazine for October, the passing of Delta Capt. Bryant E. Massey in June of 2026......
I was not able to locate an online obituary but did find some of his life history.....please see article excerpts below.
Thank you,
~ Carol for the PCN
PCN memorial site

Fall/winter 2024 issue
Evan Dyne (’06) and Bryant Massey (’05) both studied business at Francis Marion University.
After that, their careers took off.
They’re both commercial airline pilots for Delta Air Lines, based out of the company’s massive hub operation in Atlanta. Periodically, they meet in the airport on the way to and from their flights, to catch up and talk shop.
“While we haven’t gotten the chance to co-pilot, we occasionally run into each other in one of the crew rooms between flights,” says Massey. “It’s always nice to have a few minutes to catch up before we’re off to the skies.”
Both Dyne and Massey have long-time interests in flying, but neither left FMU planning on careers as a pilot. Each had other career ideas, and becoming a pilot is a long haul...........
Massey has had an interest in aviation for a long time. He heard stories from his grandfather, a Navy pilot in World War II, while growing up. As he got older, his interest in aviation grew, so much so that he decided to start skydiving. That, says Massey, “jump started” his career as a pilot.
“I remember being in this plane, getting ready to skydive and just looking over at the pilot and thinking ‘Wow, this is cool. I should learn to fly,’” recalls Massey.
He says he knew at that point that he would one day get his private pilot’s license. He began working towards that shortly after earning his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing in 2005.
Massey moved to Charleston after graduation where he took a job as a full-time firefighter while pursuing his private pilot’s license. He earned all of his ratings – private, instrument, and commercial – on his days off. Eventually, he left his firefighting job to build flight time and earn his instructor ratings...........
Massey began with Endeavor in 2011. Both also worked as flight instructors during this time, earning the hours necessary to become “big league” pilots.
A decade later they reconnected at Anderson County Airport when both were flight instructors for different companies. Massey was working for Airwolf Aviation based in Anderson SC.................
Dyne and Massey both started as pilots for Delta Air Lines in 2022. Dyne lives a short, 20-minute drive from the Atlanta airport. Massey resides in the upstate of South Carolina with his wife Lindsey (nee Harte, ’07) and their two sons.....................

Jeanine Jacobson Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson's Tribute Center - Hood River on Oct. 16, 2026.
Jeanine Mae Ahrens was born on Oct 22, 1940 in Yakima, Wa, to William and Erma Ahrens. Her growing-up years were mostly spent in the Gig Harbor area of Washington, where her parents owned a lumber and hardware store at the end of Henderson Inlet. Her pursuit of music began at the age of six when her grandmother shipped a piano from Nebraska, so Jeanine could begin lessons. In high school, she continued piano lessons, began organ lessons, and played the flute in the band. She excelled at the piano and upon entering the University of Washington began working towards her bachelor's degree in piano performance.

Three years into her studies, she married the love of her life, Carl Jacobson. They had dated in high school, played music together in the band and attended the University together. They had their first child, Katherine, Carl joined the Navy becoming a pilot and their second daughter Rachel was born. Jeanine's music career was put on hold as she and the girls followed Carl's squadron around Europe. When Carl was deployed to the Vietnam War, Jeanine refused to sit around and worry, finding it the perfect time to finish her music degree. Carl's Navy obligation ended, and he became a commercial pilot for Western and then Delta Airlines. Now it was his turn to follow Jeanine while she pursued a master's degree from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. With her degrees, Jeanine became a professor at Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles, teaching and performing piano for 20 years.

Her time in retirement was spent between Hood River and Olympia where her two grandchildren, Dylan Matson and Rhianna Salman lived. She loved spending time at the' beachhouse' with all the family. Jeanine continued to share her love of the piano in her retirement. She wrote two piano pedagogy textbooks, worked with the Music Teachers Associations of Washington and Oregon, and organized various fundraising music events.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carl Jacobson, daughters Katherine Jacobson and Rachel Bergin (Bill Bergin), brother Douglas Ahrens (Linda Ahrens), granddaughter, Rhianna Salman (Sam Fennell) and grandson, Dylan Matson.

A celebration of life followed by reception will be held 11:00 A.M., Thursday, November 5, 2026 at Anderson's Tribute Center.

John Alexander McCurdy passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 89 in Calais, Maine, with his wife of 21 years, Mary Denise, by his side.

It is hard to put 89 years of someone's life into words, especially when that life was as full and vibrant as John's.

Over the past several months, we had been working together to capture the stories of his life, and I am incredibly grateful we had that time. What became clear through those conversations was that John truly lived a life worth telling.

His adventures began early. Through the YMCA, he discovered a remarkable talent for trampoline and diving, which took him from the circus circuit to the University of Iowa trampoline team and even performances at Atlantic City's famous Steel Pier. Eventually, his journey led him to the skies, where he flew for the Air Force before going on to a career as a Delta Air Lines pilot.

That adventurous spirit never left him. He loved traveling, exploring new places, trying new experiences, and returning home with another story to tell. One of his favorite sayings was, "Do what you want and have fun doing it." Looking back, it's clear he lived exactly that way.

But John's life wasn't defined only by the extraordinary moments. It was also the simple things that made him who he was.

He played the bones and washboard in a band, loved his harmonicas, and never turned down Polar Treat, pasta, ice cream, or plenty of chocolate sauce. Comfort was always home, but Maine held a special place in his heart and became his beloved home away from home.

Most importantly, John was family. He was a devoted husband to Mary Denise, father to Robin, Michelle, Shelley, Hannah, and Annecy, and grandfather to McCall, Wyatt, Shea, Roen, and Mary. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, and his first wife, Melinda.

John leaves behind countless stories. Some were remarkable, some were hilarious, and some probably grew a little better each time he told them. Those stories, and the memories that come with them, are gifts we get to keep.

A memorial service will be held in Comfort at a later date, and details will be shared when available.

There is so much more that could be said about a life that spanned 89 years. But maybe the simplest tribute is also the most fitting:

We love you, John. Thank you for the stories, the laughter, the adventures, the love, and the example of a life fully lived.

What a life you lived.

Ferdinand STENT Obituary

It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Ferdinand Thieriot Stent, on September 22, 2026, known to all who loved and admired him as "Terry." A man of immense talents, intellect, and profound kindness, Terry lived a full and extraordinary life marked by service to his country, distinction in aviation and business, leadership in the arts, and an enduring devotion to his family.

Born into a family rooted in San Francisco, Terry discovered his passion for aviation early in life when he accompanied Frank Fuller who landed his Grumman Mallard seaplane at Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe. A natural leader and scholar, Terry served as student-body president and valedictorian at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose before heading east to Yale University, where he competed as an All-American swimmer and graduated in 1961. Following college, he pursued his love of flying by joining the United States Navy, completing flight training in Pensacola, Florida to earn his wings. He served with distinction on the USS Coral Sea aircraft carrier as a decorated F-8 Crusader pilot during the Vietnam War, flying 119 missions with extraordinary skill and bravery. His time in the military forged a lifelong reverence for service to his country, discipline, and the camaraderie of the skies.

Following his military service, Terry continued his academic pursuits, graduating with an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1968. Throughout his life, he uniquely balanced a sharp business acumen with an enduring love for flying and aviation. That passion for the skies translated into a distinguished, decades-long career as a pilot with Delta Air Lines. Respected by his colleagues for his meticulous professionalism and calm demeanor in the cockpit, Terry represented the very finest traditions of commercial aviation while skillfully applying his keen business intellect across many endeavors. His devotion to the cockpit was personal as well as professional; driven by a pure joy of flight, Terry continued to fly his own plane for nearly forty years. His deep compassion for others was especially evident from the pilot's seat, where he volunteered his time and aircraft for countless "Angel Flights" and Special Olympics airlifts to support families and athletes in need. A particularly memorable Angel Flight occurred shortly after the September 11 attacks when Terry and his long-time co-pilot and fellow Navy veteran, Jack Dempsey, answered the call to fly critical medical supplies into New York when civilian airspace was largely closed.

After retiring from Delta, Terry directed his vision, leadership, and generosity toward championing the arts. A passionate collector and visionary patron of American art, he served as Chairman of the Board of both the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. His stewardship left an indelible mark on both institutions, helping to expand collections, broaden public access, and support future generations of scholars and curators through enduring endowments that bear his and his wife's name.

Yet above all of his accomplishments, Terry was defined by his decency and warmth. Described by his brother Peter as a "perfect 10+" role model, he was a man who was genuinely kind to all, treating everyone he encountered with grace, humility, and respect. Central to his life was his wife, Margaret, who was the love of his life for 63 years. They loved each other deeply, sharing an adventurous spirit and a wonderful life together. Alongside close friends and family, Terry and Margaret loved to travel the world, hit the slopes on ski trips, ride horses at his brother Peter's ranch, play golf, and scuba dive in destinations across the globe. Their remarkable partnership was a testament to enduring love, mutual respect, and shared purpose-the cornerstone around which their family grew and flourished.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents Yvonne and Ferdie Stent. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret; his children: Suzanne Hartigan (Tim) and Christopher Stent (Jackie); his grandchildren: Kelly Hartigan, Casey Hartigan James (Fletcher), Dillon Hartigan, Emily Stent Moore (Greg), Jessica Stent McGovern (Michael), and Daniel Stent (Alli); his cherished great-grandchildren: Jackson, Julie, Caroline, Grace, Jack, and Hart; his brother, Peter Stent (Nora); and his cousins who became brothers: Peter Thieriot (Marian), the late Robin Thieriot, Dade Thieriot, and Cameron Thieriot (Tammy).

Terry leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, and quiet excellence that will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM, at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mt. Vernon Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30338.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas or the charity of your choice.
