Obituary/Tribute :     “A Tribute to My Dad”

Mr. Noel Urban Roehl, age 80, of Griffin, GA passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at his family home also known as "The Rockin' R Ranch" in Pike County.

Noel was born in Ortonville, Minnesota on February 20, 1941. Noel grew up on the Roehl family farm, getting up before sunrise in the cold to do the chores before he went to school.  His love of farming would stay with him his entire life. Even into his seventies, he would spend hours on his tractor in the fields or bailing hay for his horses.

Noel wore many hats and had many talents. His childhood dream was to be cowboy and he achieved it in spades. He had a true passion for quarter horses and spent years trying to breed and train the perfect cutting horse. Noel was also an excellent craftsman and built his own home from the ground up, often using the shop he built behind his house for the bigger projects.

Noel was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served as a Captain in the Vietnam War where he flew C-130's. In 1970, he joined Delta Airlines as a pilot and it became his lifelong career.  He flew various Delta airplanes for 31 years until he retired as a Captain of the MD-11.  Noel saw the world and enjoyed flying. He flew domestically for years before flying internationally but no matter where he went, coming home to the "Rockin R Ranch" was what made him the happiest of all.

Noel was a quiet, good and kind man who was a great father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his loving, generous and spunky wife Delores Kluttz Roehl, his parents, Edwin and Elvira Urban Roehl and siblings, Arden Roehl, Giles “Buzz” Roehl, Darrell Roehl, Gloria Graff, and Margaret Roehl.

He is survived by four children, Kevin O’Keefe (Meridith Williams), Holly Roehl Kammerer (Doug Kammerer), Brad Warren Roehl (Kristen Springer Roehl), Brian Urban Roehl (Leigh Anne Disinger Roehl) and eight grandchildren, Gray Williams, Sophia O’Keefe, Kenton Kammerer, Cally Kammerer, Gavin Roehl, Rylan Roehl, Charlotte Roehl, Caroline Roehl plus several nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be Tuesday, September 18, 2021 at 4:30 at Oak Hill Cemetery section H-1, 797 Memorial Drive, Griffin, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org/

Winn’s love of flying began at an early age as his father was a flight instructor, member of the Civil air Patrol and eventually became manager of the Malcom McKinnon Airport. He soloed several airplanes on his 16th birthday enabling him to become a licensed pilot at that time. He still owned one of those planes, a Piper Vagabond, which he continued to fly until his sudden passing. Winn spent many afternoons enjoying the beauty of this area on his flights up and down the coast of Georgia.

He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1954 and was a lifelong dedicated alumnus. He attended Georgia Military Academy and the University of Miami. He returned to Brunswick to pursue his love of flying and help his father run Baker Flying Service which later became Golden Isles Aviation. This led to his position as corporate pilot for RJ Reynolds and Dixie Paint.

In 1963 Winn began his lifelong career as a Delta pilot flying the DC 6 and DC 7. He later flew the DC 9 and DC 10 and was was a co-pilot on the first 747 Delta put into service. Winn retired as an International Captain of the 767 ER in 1996.

In addition he loved flying aerobatics and went on to win many first place awards in the 1970’s. Winn’s other passions included flying antique aircraft and experimental aircraft. From his retirement with Delta until the time of his passing he was first an instructor and demonstration pilot for the Pilatus and went on to fly charters for Gruber Aviation and Lance Toland Association until his passing. On April 27th, 2013 he was inducted into the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame in Warner Robbins as his father had been in 2007.

He was very active in the QB’s, the local EAA chapter, and the Southeastern Bonanza Group. He was passionate about the Young Eagles, an organization which encouraged and helped young fliers develop their interest in aviation.

Winn was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Fenton; his first wife, Dolores; his son Chip; and Carolyn, his second wife of 42 years who was a retired Delta Flight Attendant. He is survived by his daughter Lois (Candy) Baker and son in law David Sapp; Cousins Joe Tayler of St. Simons and Lila Stevens of Canton, Georgia along with many other first cousins from the Burroughs family on his mother’s side and his close friend Jill McGahan.

Mary Ellen Leighton, wife of NWA Capt. David Leighton

~ IN MEMORY ~

Former NAL F/A Mary Ellen Leighton, wife of NWA Capt. David Leighton

The wife of NWA Capt. David Leighton passed away on September 10th……….

The following obituary appeared in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune.

https://www.startribune.com/obituaries/detail/0000402786/

Obituary : Leighton, Mary Ellen

Leighton, Mary Ellen Age 77, of Chaska MN, left for the "great unknown" early hours of September 10th, peacefully holding hands with her husband in her own bed, after a short battle with cancer. Preceded in death by her parents and survived by husband David, son Jason Leighton (Samantha) of Chanhassen MN, daughter Erika Leighton (partner David) of Tulsa OK, son Jamie Leighton (Vanessa) of Palo Alto CA and seven grandchildren, Jack, Maggie, Vieve, Max, Brady, Nicky and Josie. Mary is also survived by two sisters Linda Sabo of Miami FL, Virginia Lally of Miami FL, and brother William Vanderbrook of Deerfield Beach FL.

She was born in Watertown NY, to William and Wylma Vanderbrook on March 20th, 1944. The family later moved to Miami Florida where Mary graduated from Palmetto High School, attended Florida State University, but cheerfully left academia for the allure of flying for National Airlines. Beginning her Stewardess career at age nineteen, she spent memorable years traveling the US and Europe, on days off cruising in her blue 1963 Corvette, enjoying life in South Miami and Coconut Grove. Along with airline peers, she relished parties on Key Biscayne, rubbed elbows with artists and eccentrics in the Grove while developing a particular fondness for football players and fighter pilots. During this period, she met Dave Leighton, a Navy Pilot from Minnesota, who became the love of her life. They embarked on a long distance relationship, Mary flying to San Diego and later, to Hong Kong when he flew in the Gulf. For over two years they met in many different cities, enjoyed bittersweet moments together, forever referred to as "Love in the Sixties - under the shadow of the sword" Married in 1969, they moved home to Minnesota, set up housekeeping on Lake Minnetonka and raised three children in several different lake homes. For over fifty years, Mary gardened, exercised, waged war on lake weeds, waitressed, worked at the animal hospital, watched football games and forever shivered in local hockey arenas. Indeed, a formidable cook and hostess, she had great parties when not boating and enjoying 'The Lake'. Through life, Mary was quietly close to her husband, a pilot for Northwest Airlines, and was unquestionably proud her sons both graduated from the United States Air Force Academy. She forever maintained herself as a trim, loving, notably attractive woman and a good friend to her many compatriots, clients and customers. Her loss will be forever felt by her husband, family and friends. As per her wishes, there will be no funeral or formal celebration of her life. A small gathering of family and close friends will be held in the future at her home. In time, there will be a private interment at Fort Snelling where she will await her beloved husband.

March 13, 1969 ~ June 19, 2021

As noted in the September Air Line Pilot magazine’s In Memoriam column, the passing of Northwest/Delta pilot F/O Hank Kristian Osterlund, age 52.  Hank joined Northwest Airlines 08-06-2001 and was currently active with Delta Air Lines.  I was able to find an online obituary …..translated from  Finnish to English….which notes Hank’s survivors as his wife Jenny and his daughters Kelly and Kristina.  Cause of death appears to be an aggressive type of coronary infection…..please see obituary translated below.

For those who may wish to contact the family, whitepages lists their most current address as

704 River Overlook, Forsyth, GA 31029.

Thank you,

https://www.hs.fi/muistot/art-2000008114853.html translated from Finnish to English reads:  FLIGHT CAPTAIN Hannu “Össi” Österlund died at the age of 52 on June 19, 2021 in Gainesville, Florida, USA. He was born in Lahti, Finland on March 13, 1969. Young Österlund was known as a colorful person who enjoyed having fun with his friends. He was a master at putting himself in the league in his spontaneous madness without ever ruining anyone else. There was endless laughter in him, and he made life-long friends early on with his sincere, inimitable, and lovable nature.

The more thoughtful side was visible when the young man noticed a plane taking off or landing over Vantaa. Already at the age of 6, the dream of a pilot career had been ignited, and after high school and the military, Österlund toiled resolutely, earning funds for training.

However, during the recession of the 1990s, educational programs were cut, so Österlund went to the United States with the support of his family of exchange students, who had already become close there, and his mother. The name changed to a more international outfit Hank Österlund, and alongside flying, another great love appeared, wife Jenny.

For most of his career, Österlund flew Boeing 757s and 767s on Delta Airlines. He acquired prestigious special qualifications and had just been promoted to flight captain. In addition to international scheduled flights, he also flew the U.S. presidential staff and NHL teams.

In addition to professional affiliations, family photographs were obtained in Finland, in which Österlund presented, among other things, the growing up of his beloved daughters Kelly and Kristina. In addition to active communication, he visited Finland to cherish his family ties and friendships.

FRIENDS have described Österlund as a funny “vilpert” who, however, was at the same time a cordial, responsible, inventive, talented, capable and long-term visionary. He prospered with his main job and part-time entrepreneurship, building a dream house he designed for his beloved family. The Finnish velmuila ended up living the American dream, even though he had sought a mere license to fly.

Life takes what it gives. Österlund, who reported his coronary infection and was in good condition, still smiled at the photo on May Day, but the progression of the disease surprised everyone. Intensive care weeks followed each other as Jenny and Nina transmitted Österlund's affiliations to close associates in the two home countries until the last spark of hope went out. The beloved pilot had ascended his wings forever.

Now family members and friends are looking at the holiday of the clouds. Have a good trip, Hannu - Godspeed, Hank.

Obituary :  JACK'S OBITUARY

Jack Rayner Henry, age 92, died in his sleep Sunday, September 5, 2021.  He is survived by his ex-wife and business partner Shirley “Pinky” Henry; son and daughter-in-law Kim and Maria Nolasco Henry of Sharpsburg; daughter and son-in-law Tori and David Stivers of Peachtree City; grandson Grant Stivers of Los Angeles, CA; step-granddaughter Maria J. Nolasco de Garcia and step-grandson Ervin Nolasco of Hapeville.

Jack was born in 1928 in Oklahoma City and was the only child of William Rayner and Mildred Orr Henry.  In 1933, Jack’s family moved to California so his dad could manage western sales for the Pet Milk Company.  They lived in rental houses in Burlingame and San Mateo, south of San Francisco.  In 1941 when Jack was 13 years old, his dad was promoted to general sales manager and transferred to Pet Milk’s corporate headquarters in St. Louis, MO.  They bought a house in Webster Groves, a small suburb of St. Louis.

Jack graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1947 and attended Washington University in St. Louis where he met and dated his future wife Shirley “Pinky” Pinckert.  He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.  In May 1951 he graduated with an engineering degree and because he already had a pilot’s license, applied and was accepted to the U.S. Air Force (AF) Aviation Cadet program.  Jack received seven months basic pilot training at Greenville (MS) AF base, followed by six months advanced pilot training at Vance AF base in Enid, OK before receiving his Lieutenant commission and wings on June 21,1952.  During nine additional weeks of training at Moody AF base in Valdosta, GA, he and Pinky were married at the base chapel on August 9, 1952.  After they moved to Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, FL for five weeks of training, Jack was deployed to Okinawa, Japan for 23 months at the end of the Korean War, flying the F-84F Thunderstreak fighter-bomber.  Pinky was able to quickly join him because she got a job with the Department of Army Civilians teaching children of servicemen stationed there.

When Jack’s AF career ended, the couple moved to Kirkwood, MO where son Kim was born April 3, 1955.  Jack tried various jobs until he was hired as a flight engineer by Delta Airlines in November 1957, and the family moved to New Orleans where daughter Tori was born May 27, 1959.  Delta transferred Jack to Atlanta in 1960 where he built a duplex for the family on Georgia Avenue in Hapeville.  The house was so close to the Atlanta airport that Jack rode his bicycle to work.  In the late 1960s before the airport expanded and took their home, Jack built another home, moving the family to Forrest Hill Drive in March 1968.

Because employees and their families could fly free on Delta planes, Jack took the family on international vacations to Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, England, Israel, Kenya, Egypt, Portugal, Venezuela, and Ireland. He and Pinky visited Puerto Rico, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, and Russia.  Jack also planned family camper family trips to Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

In 1963 Jack and Pinky bought 134 acres of land in Coweta County for $14,000 ($104/acre). They later bought more land in Coweta and developed Crossroads Estates and Rayner Woods subdivisions in Newnan.  Their third and last subdivision development was Oconee Woods in Sharpsburg near Canongate Golf Course.  They started clearing the land in 1995, and the first house was built in 2005.

In 1970, Jack was looking for a used car when he found a 1934 Ford V8 4-door sedan that still ran and was in pretty good condition.  He bought it for $350 and began his antique car restoration hobby.  He eventually took it completely apart to the frame and restored it from the ground up. Jack took auto body classes at Atlanta Area Tech and over about seven years, he refinished the car’s body. He purchased an industrial sewing machine and convinced Pinky to take upholstery classes so she could refinish the mohair car seats, which she did.  He and Pinky joined the Early Ford V8 Club of America and attended car meets in Georgia.  In 1978, the car won a 1st place trophy at the Eastern National meet and 3rd place at the Grand National meet in Tulsa, OK; they drove the car roundtrip!  Jack later bought a 1940 LaSalle sedan, restored a 1932 Ford V8 Flathead roadster and a 1940 Studebaker Commander, the car his family traveled in when they moved to St. Louis.

Jack was a good provider for his family, paying for college educations for both his children:  a bachelor’s degree and dental school for Kim and bachelor and master’s degrees for Tori.  He also bought them their first cars - used Ford Pintos, so he could maintain and repair them if needed.

Since he enjoyed ballroom dancing and big band music, after he was divorced and retired, Jack joined single senior dance groups in north Atlanta.  He was on the board of directors for Solos and After-Hours Social Club.  He was also a member of the Executive Suite Singles.  He was such a good dancer that he earned free passage on cruise ships by dancing with single women on board.  He was still participating in Atlanta dance groups when he was 90 years old.

Jack’s final construction project was Henry Towers, a commercial building located at 3619 South Fulton Avenue in Hapeville.  Son Kim’s dental practice operates from there and businesses rent the other offices.

For 52 years, Jack lived in the second house he built in Hapeville until his children moved him to Hope Center Memory Care in Fayetteville April 2020 after he could no longer live alone.  Hope and Southern Grace Hospice employees, especially his nurse Amanda and aide Angie B., took wonderful care of Jack, and his family is grateful for their kind and dedicated service.  He will be interred by the US Department of Veterans Affairs at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA on September 24, 2021.
