Obituary : Bob Allen – husband, father, brother, friend, pilot, mentor, confidant, philosopher, lover of all things aeronautical – died Friday, July 29, 2022, missing his 78th birthday by two days. In typical Bob style, he fought lung cancer on his own terms, acquiescing to immunotherapy, radiation and chemo as long as it didn’t interfere with his daily ritual of tinkering and building planes at his Bowman Field hangar. Quality of life was foremost, and he continued his daily Bowman field ritual until just a couple weeks ago before deciding to just hang out with his loved ones and four pups on his sun porch.

Bob was born in Paducah, KY, the son of Cotton and Sue Allen. He grew up in Paducah where he attended Heath High School. His love of flight started with his first job fueling airplanes at Barkley Regional Airport. He soon gravitated to flying and enjoyed a 37-year career as one of Delta Airlines’ senior captains, being part of the first to fly its Boeing 777 across the Atlantic which was also his favorite to fly when he was in his “Cadillac” mood. Otherwise, if he was in a “stick’n rudder” mood, he enjoyed the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. In 1996 on a blind date to the PGA Championship with his brother, Bill, he was paired with Susan Considine. They became inseparable, and he gradually migrated from Dallas to Louisville. In 2002, he married the love of his life, and he and Susan settled into Louisville. A year later, he chucked his Delta wings. They bought a house in Hurstbourne Subdivision which he took on as a DIY project, gutting nearly every room to turn it into their home in painstaking fashion, friends referred to them as the Allen Doggie Day Care with several Cavalier King Charles Spaniels while also watching other pups as well. They once got down to two dogs, Bob told Susan he thought that was a more manageable number. Shortly after, she added two CKCS rescue dogs to their home and Bob just grinned.

He received many awards and recognitions, most notably in 2016, the Wright Brothers’ Master Pilot Award in recognition of 50 years of safe flying. He was co-partner in the Kentuckiana Volunteer Aviators group flying practice search-and-rescue missions, as well as a dedicated participant in the EAA Young Eagles program influencing the lives of many young aspiring pilots. Bob was the unofficial Mayor of Bowman Field “lover-of-all-things aeronautical” association. It was here in his hangar that he spent virtually all of his days building a plane or two (the latter an RV-9A with his daughter Sha), commiserating with other pilots, and mentoring young men who sought to follow in his footsteps.

However busy he was, Bob was always available to anyone who needed someone to talk to. Consequently, it was no surprise that many called him friend and sought out his sound advice, always patient …. always pleasant… always parting with “don’t be a stranger”. He will be missed by all these friends as well as his family who survive him including his wife, Susan; daughters, Chris Johnson of Dunn, N. Carolina and Sha Allen of Austin, Texas; and brother, Bill Allen of Louisville. Bob and Susan want to give gratitude to Dr. Ignacio Montes and everyone at Baptist Health CBC Unit. Dr. Montes always greeted Bob with “How is my favorite Captain today”? They are also so appreciative of their Hosparus Health team, Becky, Cheri, Lynn, and Dr. Earnshaw who eased Bob and his family’s mind and placed trust in all services. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Hosparus Health, Development Dept., 6200 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40205 or hosparushealth.org. Bob wanted nothing to do with funeral homes but rather wanted a party. So we will be celebrating his life at (where else??) Bowman Field in the Administration Building rotunda 2817 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40205 on Thursday, Sept 22, 2022 from 4-6 pm. Open mike….bring your best “Bob” story. Wear your aviation or leisurely finest and please RSVP to susanallen9007@gmail.com

Gladys’ obituary : On July 3, 2022, Gladys Anderson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 89 in her home of 51 years in Bellevue, Washington.

Gladys was born April 7, 1933, in Wesleyville, PA, to Herta and Henry Stockhausen. She attended Wesleyville High School and sang in the school and church choirs. During her Junior year, she met her future husband, Norman "Andy" Anderson, who attended Lawrence Park High School. They were both on their school's committee for a joint school dance for the two High Schools. They met there, started dating a month later, fell in love, and began their wonderful love story as they dated for 5 years, then married for another 67 years!

Gladys and Andy married in 1955. With Andy in the Navy, his first assignment was Whidbey Island Airbase where Gladys fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. After the Navy, Andy got a job at Northwest Airlines, they moved around a bit, then settled in the Seattle, WA area. In 1971 they built their dream home in Bellevue, WA, where they lived to this day.

Gladys and Andy were very involved with their church and had many friends at St Andrew's Lutheran Church. Gladys continued her love to sing in the church choir, where she sang solos for many years. Also, a Bridge group was created at Church that ended up being lifelong friends, vacationing many places together and creating incredible friendship bonds.

While Andy traveled for work, Gladys stayed home and took care of raising their 4 children and many dogs! She continued to sing, became the best cook (and enjoyed cooking), loved to sew and embroider, and read, read, read! She also loved camping; once they moved to the PNW there were many family camping trips every year. Once retired Gladys and Andy traveled in their 5th wheel RV for many more adventures around the Western States together, as well as with family and friends.

Before and after Andy retired, they did extensive travel around the world. Gladys took great care to read the history of every place they traveled and made sure they knew all about the places they would visit, even planning all their camping travels closely with Andy.

For 9 years Gladys and Andy had another home in Idaho Springs, CO, to spend time with grandchildren and great grandchildren there. They have many fond memories of holidays spent there, lots of snow and learning to love the game of Mexican Train! Gladys' passion and love was in her family. She always enjoyed getting family together, for holidays, birthdays, summer picnics or any other excuse! She was truly dedicated to her family and wanted to be around them as much as possible.

We have so many wonderful memories of Gladys and she will live in our hearts and minds for the rest of our days. She lived a wonderful and happy life and passed peacefully in her own house as she had always wanted.

Gladys is survived by her husband Norman "Andy," her daughters Laurie and Lianne, her son Kenneth and his wife, Cristy, 8 grandchildren Heather, Sheena, Andrea, Ryan, Erin, Piper, Sarah and Olivia, and 5 great-grandchildren Mason, Mia, Luke, Emily and Owen . She was preceded in death by her Mother, Herta, her Father, Henry, her sister, Hilda and her son, Bradley.

A service will be held at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Bellevue on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 11AM. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in memory of Gladys to The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind.

Obituary : Brian Wittke was born to Donald Wittke Sr. and Annie Vargas on December 10th, 1980, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Brian passed away on June 14th, 2022, at the age of 41 and returned to his creators loving arms where he could be at peace.

Brian had a profound influence on all who knew him. He had a fun, playful personality and conveyed love, humor, and joy to all fortunate enough to interact with him.

As a third-generation pilot, Brian loved flying and the freedom it brought. As a child he was fascinated with airplanes and the concept of flying. As an adult he accomplished his dream of becoming a Delta pilot and took to the sky on metal wings. He was constantly excelling in his profession. If Brian had a weakness, it was that he could never sit still. He was constantly reading and learning, including obtaining an MBA degree from the University of Utah while working full time. But as impressive as his career was, even more impressive was his love for his family!

Brian married the love of his life, Wendy Lowrance, in 2002 and added three beautiful children to their family. He cherished the quality time he got to spend with them. He excelled as a provider for his family whom he loved dearly.

Brian developed a love for nature and all that it entailed. Whether hiking, camping, skiing, dirt biking, or just being in the mountains, Brian was always most at peace when in nature.

Brian is survived in life by his wife (Wendy), his children (Brinley [19], Bryson [16], and Brayden [12]), his siblings (Abbie, Donald; Elizabeth, Mary, Jonathan, David, Stephen), his parents (Don and Kathy, Ann and Frank, and Dan and Elaine).

Brian, may the wind always be under your forever wings and may you fly free!

Love you forever, for always, and no matter what

Vernon C. Feeback (rnpa.org)

Captain Vernon Feeback, age 81, died July 12, 2022, some 29 days after suffering a severe stroke. His final departure came at home with his family and beloved dog nearby.

Vern was born in Denver, Colorado March 09, 1941, to Charles and Helen Feeback. He had one sibling, a brother Larry. Since age five Vern lived near Wiggins, CO. He was an excellent high school student, graduating #3 in his class. Vern had cross discipline talents, e.g., he played football on his high school team and also held a chair as a trumpet player in the band. When not involved in high school activities Vern worked at a local grocery store.

Vern’s interest in aviation was sparked by a $5 demo flight given by a local Colorado crop duster. While giving due diligence to his engineering studies at the University of Colorado for three and a half years, Vern continuously dabbled in flying as his funds and time permitted. . He studied engineering for three and a half years at the U. of Colorado, all the while dabbling in flying as his funds and time permitted. For Vern acquiring the FAA CFI (Instructor) rating mattered most, it was a ticket toward an aviation career. He worked extensively as an instructor and charter pilot and even as an airport manager in Eastern Colorado before being hired by Northwest Airlines.

Vern’s date of hire at NWA was September 9, 1968. He initially qualified as a Boeing 727 second officer and thereafter 720/320 second officer, the later was followed by an upgrade to 727 first officer (copilot). In these three seats Vern served until able to upgrade to Boeing 727 captain. In the mid-1980s he met Diane Nelson, a native of St. James, MN. The two clicked and married, maintaining a ‘Happy House’ for 38 years.

The airline career slowly pressed forward to include upgrades to captain on the Boeing 757 (a favorite), Douglas DC-10, Boeing 747 Classic and his final upgrade to the 747/400. Vern packed his flight bag away for good in March of 2001.

Diane reports that Vern was “a super teacher as he taught her how to fly their Piper Dakota, earning her a Private FAA license. Vern had a funny, dry sense of humor, resulting in him being a wonderful human with whom to share life. He was reputed to be generous, never complained, his prevailing attitude when faced with adversity was, get up and get on with it. He simply never gave up.”

Diane’s family-owned river front property near Alberton, Montana which Vern and Diane eventually purchased. Vern delighted in fly fishing, making his own rods and flies with which he fished all the western Montana mountain rivers. When the seasons did not permit fly fishing, he reverted to shooting and reloading ammunition.

The last five years of Vern’s life were plagued with medical issues. His ever-faithful Border Collie dog ‘Kimber’ stayed close until Vern’s end. I last saw Vern and Diane at Wayne Anderson’s funeral on the west shore of Flathead Lake in October 2021.

Vern is survived by his wife Diane, with whom he shared 38 happy years of marriage; his children Greg and Kim, five grandchildren and three great grandsons.

He will be missed every day.

(- Feeback family and Bill Day)

Tribute …………………

Joseph Allen Fugate took his final flight to his heavenly home on August 4, 2022 at the age of 85. He was born on September 23, 1936 in Alachua, Florida to the late Roland Montgomery Fugate and Laura Pauline Cocke Fugate. Joe attended the University of Florida before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for 10 years as a fighter pilot, achieving the rank of Captain. During his time in the Air Force, Joe took an assignment that brought him to Houma, Louisiana, where he met his future wife, Cheryl Gaudet. When his time in the Air Force ended, Joe became a pilot for Delta Air Lines and enjoyed a 30 year career with what he considered the best airline in the industry. Joe was an avid rosarian during his time residing in Metairie and Destrehan, and he and Cheryl were members of several rose societies. Joe grew over 300 beautiful rose bushes at his Metairie home and he was thrilled to be featured on Angela Hill’s Good Earth program on WWL. Besides roses, Joe loved to play chess. He rose to a high rank in postal chess, but his proudest accomplishments were his wins against chess masters who were ranked higher than him. Family meant everything to Joe. He had a heart of gold and loved unconditionally. Joe always considered helping to educate his children and grandchildren one of his greatest endeavors. He will be deeply missed and remain forever in our hearts. Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cheryl Gaudet Fugate, and his two daughters, Sara Dailey (Scott) and Joanna Gele’ (Brian). He was the proud grandfather of Lauren Hymel (Jimmy), Patrick Dailey, Brandon Gele’ and Matthew Gele’ and proud great-grandfather of James Hymel III. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Elizabeth O’Conner. In addition to his parents, Joe is predeceased by his brother, William Fugate.
