Obituary :  Captain Charles Joseph Owen, affectionately known as Buddy.

On a quiet summer’s night after 2 to 3 scotch on the rocks, an absolute legendary life came to an end, and Captain Buddy received the wings he had so long sought.

Legend has it that the second he entered this world, the entire city of Meridian MS lost power for 34 seconds.  Allegedly Buddy’s first sounds were a deep powerful belly laugh, and at that exact moment, the power returned to the city of Meridian creating what scholars have since described as an electrical phenomenon.

Against the odds he miraculously survived his youth, despite all attempts from his father David, and entered his teenage years where would eventually find his passion for football.

From the years of 1958 through 1960, on any crisp fall Friday night, the entire town of Meridian would line up hours ahead of time, often ensuing in physical altercations, in the pursuit of the perfect seat at Ray Stadium, which would later become known as the house that Buddy Owen built.

Playing RB, he was the only person to achieve All Big-8 honors his junior and his senior year.  After multiple scholarship offers, he decided to take his talents to Mississippi State, where his career was regrettably derailed due to fast women and cheap booze.  During his time at Mississippi State, he clearly excelled academically “After my Freshman year, my grades were so good they asked me to stay home for a semester” –  Buddy Owen: Class of 1961 Meridian High School 50th anniversary self-written biography.

From 1962 to early 1967 there is no confirmed knowledge of assumed shenanigans.

In the summer of 67’ Buddy would have what most would describe as an “Ah-Ha” moment; he would begin his lifelong pursuit of perfection through aviation.  After receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Mississippi Air National Guard, he went on to complete Air Force Pilot Training at Williams Air Force Base in Phoenix, AZ.

After spending years working odd jobs (private aviation, crop dusting, flight instructor, corporate pilot, and even repossessing a private plane in Miami), he would finally get his opportunity to pursue his dream of being a commercial pilot in 1970.  In 1975 Buddy successfully completed his military career, and he would go on to be a regular member of the mile high club for the majority of his adult life until he met the love of his life in 1981.

At Anderson’s Hospital in Meridian, MS,. during a scheduled gallbladder surgery, Buddy (who was high as a kite) told the gorgeous nurse named Judy, whom he had never met, that they were going to have beautiful children together.  Fast forward after what can only be described as a regrettable amount of Bud Lite & Rose wine, Buddy made true to his word.  On November 12th 1985 & September 27th 1988, those two crazy kids produced arguably the most handsome children known to man.  Especially the eldest child.

Throughout the 80’s and 90’s he drove fast cars, owned multiple airplanes, drank enough bourbon to kill normal men, and used his god given charm to get out of more sticky situations that any of us will ever be able to comprehend.  Buddy would continue to live his life in such a way that it would have made Howard Hughes, Hugh Hefner, and even his idol, Elvis Presley, blush.

He would eventually achieve his ultimate goal, and in 1997 was rewarded with the honor of becoming an International Captain on the Boeing 747-400.  After 33 years, and reaching the pinnacle of his career, he retired at the age of 60 where he swore, he would never fly again….and he never did.

When he wasn’t flying, Buddy dedicated himself to being the best father that any two sons could ever ask for.  His favorite times were the ones spent with his children.  He was fully invested in their lives, he cared deeply about their passions which would then become his passions.  He built an environment for them on that was based on the foundation of love, kindness, and laughter.

He would cultivate a lifetime of memories for them.  Buddy would eventually give his two sons, Austin & Justin, the greatest gift that any father could pass along to their children, a blueprint of how to a perfect Dad.  Which his oldest son Austin would need in 2018, making Buddy a grandfather for the first time.

He would tell them that he loved them every single day…and he never missed a day.

He is survived by his older brother Les Owen (who he never gave a compliment to in the 78 years of his existence), his nephews/nieces Les Owen, Dave Owen, David Randall, Robin Hall & Lisa Kittrell (who according to Buddy, owed all of their success to him). The mother of his children Judy Miles (who he loved until his last breath) His two sons Austin & Justin (who his entire world revolved around), and his granddaughter, Harper Grace Owen (who he loved more than anything else in this world).  He was preceded in death by his father David Owen, his mother Marie Lewis Owen-Harrington (who was an absolute Saint of a woman) and his sister Peggy Randall.

*Some of the names, dates, places, and actions have been greatly exaggerated to protect the innocent in typical Buddy Owen fashion*

Leslie Pearson Litvik was born and raised in the Dallas Ft. Worth area. The oldest of two kids, she and her younger brother Marc, grew up taking full advantage of the perks available through their Dads job as an airline pilot. Leslie graduated from Liberty Christian School in 1989 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University where she studied Radio, TV and Film. Introduction into the film industry came quite unexpectedly when her children were cast in a feature film shooting at the High School her son attended. Soon after "HOOVEY the Movie" wrapped, Leslie was cast in her very first principal role in the touching film, LOVE LAND. She and her children, Conner and Kathryn, started working on productions, in front and behind the camera. Almost immediately the three realized they had found their calling and their first company, LoneStar Cast & Crew (LoneStar Management Group) was born. LoneStar has developed into "flipped entertainment", a family business devoted to working with Texas talent, crew and productions, flipped has quickly grown into a powerhouse of creative media. Although she still enjoys acting she has started focusing more on producing and casting for feature films, independent projects, TV shows and music videos. This Texas Tornado and her flipped crew have created a unique and ever growing presence in the Texas film community. Her open door policy, heart for others, infectious energy and dedication to family and friends has created the perfect recipe for success.

Obituary for Kenneth Lutrell Silas in Humble , Texas

A very special gift from God has been called home, Kenneth L Silas, or more commonly known as Husband, Father, Brother, Friend, and Florida Red, will forever live in our hearts. Just as his mother “Gerry” showed Ken how to accept all of life’s highs and lows, Ken soldiered on and always repeated the mantra of “keep your eyes on the prize.”

Ken, a fifth generation Floridian, was born on November 30, 1952. Kenneth was the fourth and last child born to the union of Harold G. Silas and Geraldine Whitaker-Silas in Bartow, Florida. Following the untimely passing of Harold G. Silas, Geraldine moved the family to Lakeland, Florida to begin a new life.

Ken attended Lakeland High School in Lakeland, Florida, where he excelled both in academics and athletics. During his senior year, Ken was offered an athletic scholarship to play football at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. Ken accepted the scholarship and started his college career on August 15, 1970.

In 1972 Ken joined the Gamma Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which started his many years of community service. Ken loved building and flying model aircraft. He would often fly them around his parent’s home frequently breaking things, but it didn’t deter his love for flying. In 1972, Ken joined the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) Program Detachment 019 at Alabama State University, and in 1974 Ken was one of the first 13 cadets to receive a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF from Alabama State University.

With his college degree, and Commission in hand, Ken embarked on his military career. In 1974 Ken completed Aircraft Avionics Officers School at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado. After serving as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer for several years, Ken applied and was accepted into the United States Air Force’s Undergraduate Pilot Training Program. Ken completed his USAF pilot training which led to a 21-year flying career. Along the way Ken held a plethora of jobs including Undergraduate Pilot Training instructor in the T-37 Aircraft, Instructor in the C-141 Aircraft, and Instructor in the C-9 aircraft.

Ken retired from the USAF at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and moved on to his second career as a Professional Airline Pilot starting with Northwest Airlines and then Delta Airlines. During his years as an Airline Pilot, Captain Silas flew the A330, A320/319 Airbus family of aircraft, Boeing 757 300/200 models, Boeing 717 and the MacDonnell Douglas DC-9-10/30/40/50 family of aircraft.

Kenneth’s legacy is one filled with a myriad of accomplishments and deep seeded relationships with friends and family.

On August 13th, 2021, the angels came to take Ken. Now Ken belongs to the Lord. Ken was proceeded in death by his father Harold G. Silas, his mother Geraldine Silas-Tillmon, sisters Jacqueline Martin and Laroilyn V. Silas, and brother Harold L. Silas.

Kenneth leaves behind his loving wife Irma Silas, son Kenneth Silas Jr., daughter Sydney Silas, nephews Kyle Martin and Aaron Silas, nieces Christy Martin and Vanessa Silas, many other relatives, and a plethora of devoted friends.

Visitation will be held from 3-4 pm for immediate family and from 4-7 pm for the public on Thursday, August 19th, 2021, at Rosewood Funeral Home in Atascocita. The service will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021, at 2 pm at Rosewood Funeral Home in Atascocita. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the American Red Cross and handwritten Memory Cards.

WA/DL Capt. Richard A. 'Dick' Deeds

February 16, 1934 ~ August 6, 2021

Please see family tribute and obituary below as we share news of the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Richard Austin Deeds, age 87.  Dick joined Western Airlines  01-20-1964 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1994, based 030/LAX at the time of his retirement.  Left to mourn Dick’s passing is his wife Mary Ann, his sons and many more family members, friends, and colleagues.

.....from son Ken's facebook page:  “It's with the heaviest of hearts I post my father, Captain Richard A. Deeds, passed yesterday at the age of 87 after a long battle with several health problems.   I don't know if there are words

in life for when we lose someone that loves us as much as my father loved me and our family.  His final months were not easy and his passing was a also a blessing at this point as he was in great pain and had no chance of ever

leaving a hospital bed.   To quote my father, "Getting old isn't for pussies."

My father loved to fly.  If you never were in cockpit with my dad I don't know if you really knew the man.  His love for flight started from the first day he saw an airplane.  He learned to fly by going to the airport in Erie, PA, and cleaning and fueling planes for people.  They'd then sometimes take him and up and that's how he learned.   He worked on the original black box recorder for aviation and has a wall full of awards for his work and dedication to airline safety.  At the top of those was the Rare Bird award from ALPA (pilots union) which was for the single person that did the most for airline safety in a year.  My dad's concern and care for the passengers and other pilots was second to none.  He was lucky in that he spent his life doing what he loved the most for work.    I really don't know what happens after life but I pray my father is just flying an airplane somewhere.   It's what he was born to do.

My father accomplished so many things in his lifetime it's hard to list them here.  He served during the Korean War, he became an accomplished computer programmer after retiring from flying, he could make a speech like few people ever can, and he was one of the first people to survive a full kidney removal in the 1950s.   But among his accomplishments his love for me, my brother, and our family was probably his greatest.  You couldn't ask for someone to care more about their family than he cared about us.   You might match it, but you just can't care more than he did. I thank you dad for all the great times and memories.   I wish your passing was easier for you and once again I just hope you are flying an old biplane

through the clouds.  I love you and we'll all miss you.   The earth is a quieter and duller place without you.”

Obituary : https://times-herald.com/news/2021/08/john-edward-miller

Born in Cherryvale, KS, John grew up on a farm, lettered in numerous sports, and graduated valedictorian of his class at Cherryvale High School.

He earned his agricultural engineering degree from Kansas State University then served as a US Navy pilot for eight years. His joy of flying took him to a career of 29 years with Delta Airlines. That career saw him move to Newnan in 1978, and he ultimately retired as a Captain in 1999. In his 43 years in Newnan, he worshiped and served at various churches and the Newnan Kiwanis Club. And, of special note, John was 31 years sober and continuously active in AA as a coach/mentor to countless people.

He was a devoted husband to Cathy for almost 40 years. In those years they cared for their sons and daughter and the depth of his love is demonstrated in the many and wonderful memories he has provided his twelve grandchildren. His was a life of quiet generosity. He loved to travel and explore, truly appreciating the backroad that was less traveled and that obscure point of history for which few would take the time to stop. It is appropriate that he passed while on one of those trips.

Dad would chuckle at this, but if you knew him well, you would agree that he could sometimes be called cantankerous, even a touch critical. And yet, he never meant harm. He really just knew no pretense. You knew where he stood. His uniquely John phrases and perseverance in keeping everyone in touch will be missed.

John was preceded in death by Charles & Mildred Miller of Cherryvale, KS (mother & father), Jean Sleeth (sister), and Cathy Miller (wife) who passed in February 2021. He leaves behind a family legacy and many friends that will miss him terribly. His remaining immediate family includes his sister Ruth Rusmisel, sons Scott & (spouse Sharla) & Bob (spouse Sheryl) Miller and Eric (spouse Tammy) Polly, daughter Missy (spouse Misty) Polly Howell and twelve grandchildren; Zack, Spencer, Nick, Jack, Mackenzie, Sarah, Abby, Emma, Rex, Chase, Heath, Kason.

As John was a pilot, the first and last stanzas of the poem High Flight are fitting as he has certainly 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' and now 'put out his hand and touched the face of God'.

There will be a Memorial service at 2 pm on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church on Highway 154 in Sharpsburg, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Kiwanis International Childrens Fund in his memory.

Cathy Miller  (February 1, 1947 - February 10, 2021)

Obituary :  Cathy Sue Wyrick Miller, born in New Orleans, LA, 74 years old, passed away on Feb 10, 2021, in her hometown of over 40 years, Newnan, GA.

Cathy had an unmatched spirit and passion for life and Christ and as a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church- she illuminated everything and everyone she encountered.

Cathy truly always had a smile and an open heart and door for everyone she met. She touched countless lives and hearts and spent a lifetime educating children as a teacher and driver of excellence within her classrooms, most recently in the Coweta County School System. In her retirement, she became extremely active in Kiwanis and K-kids.

She is no longer in pain and for that we are thankful. We are not sure how any of us will move forward without her, but commend the exceptional efforts and care of the team at Piedmont Newnan.

She has always been and still is a warrior. A warrior in her ability to prevail through just about anything, including COVID. A warrior through pain. A warrior through loss. A warrior through success. A warrior in her own strength. A warrior in fighting for her children and family. A warrior in her unmatched love of her 12 grandchildren. A warrior in every single thing she did. And above all a warrior in Christ. She did ALL of this with grace and kindness and inner and outer beauty. Fly high, our sweet angel. Fly high.

Cathy is survived by her beloved family - husband, John E. Miller, daughter, Melissa Polly (Misty Howell), son, Eric Polly (Tammy) and their kids - Rex, Chase, Heath and Kason, stepson Scott Miller (Sharla) and their children, Zach, Nick, McKenzie and Abby, stepson Robert Miller (Sheryl) and their children, Spencer, Jack, Sarah and Emma. She is also survived by her three siblings, Beth (Mike) Respess, Eddie (Pat) Wyrick, Charles (LeeAnn) Wyrick and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and other extended family.

She is preceded in death by her devoted parents, Ed & Lois Wyrick and nephew Jonathan Respess.

The family has chosen to hold formal services at a time when more people will be able to join in the celebration of her life well lived and well loved.
