JAMES DEGNAN BIOGRAPHY

Jim was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to Paul and Kathleen Degnan, on June 27, 1945.

His interest in flying began after watching airplane activity at the old Toledo metropolitan

airport while still pre-school age. He attended grade school in Toledo Ohio and Monroe

Michigan, and the high school St. Francis DeSales, near Toledo. From there he

attended University of Toledo for a BBA in transportation logistics. Meanwhile, he took

flight lessons at the Toledo municipal airport, and worked with all sorts of aircraft

maintenance and care.

At that time, the draft board was active, so after graduation from college in 1968, he

made the choice to join the Navy as a better alternative to ground fighting in the

Vietnam war.

The Navy had a short officer candidate school, along with basic single-engine

education, including carrier qualification on the Wasp. At Corpus Christi the aviators

learned formation and multi-engine flying. That was followed by a few months in CA

before joining VP-6 at Barbers Point. The squadron was deployed to Naha, Okinawa,

Cubi Point, and various destinations while flying anti-submarine missions over the

ocean around Viet Nam. Even time spent at “home” on Oahu consisted of many sorties

over the ocean. The P-3 they flew was a 4-engine turboprop, known in airline travel as

the Lockheed Electra.

Jim was released from the Navy in 1973, and continued to fly with Nomads, in Detroit,

a travel club using the Electra for jaunts to attractive club destinations, as well as

working as a Naval reservist, and private work as available. 1973 was a time of general

fuel shortage, and the airlines were not hiring.

In February, 1977 he started with Western Airlines out of L.A., until Delta bought them.

He lived in Cupertino, CA, and then in Indiana, while based in Cincinnati. He flew for

Delta until 2004, retiring with Margaret to the condo on Kauai.

He started with the Civil Air Patrol in August, 2005. There he found the comradeship of

others committed to necessary tasks that allowed emergency notification for all of Kauai

residents, even those without access to usual phone and radio information.

With the help of Lihue civil air patrol, Jim was honored to be awarded recognition for

“Fifty Years of Dedicated Service in Aviation Safety” from the Department of

Transportation Federal Aviation Administration.

Two Civil Air Patrol pilots participating in a Hawaii Wing tsunami alert training mission March 20 perished in an accident on Kaua’i.

“We lost two valued members of our CAP ohana (family) this weekend,” said Col. Chantal Lonergan, Hawaii Wing commander. “Our hearts remain with their families.”

Lt. Col. James E. Degnan and Capt. David J. Parker, both retired military pilots, participating in the wing’s monthly U.S. Air Force-assigned exercises when the accident occurred over land about 3 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time — just 11 minutes into their flight.

Fire Air 1 responded and located the wreckage of the aircraft on a ridge near the Pihea Trail in Koke’e State Park on the island’s northwest side. Rescuers were unable to reach the crash site until this morning because of the mountainous terrain and inclement weather that moved into the area. The bodies were recovered when the weather cleared.

Both men were members of the Kaua’i Composite Squadron, based in Lihue.

Degnan, 76, was the squadron’s operations and alerting officer. Parker, 77, served as the unit’s emergency services officer. Both were experienced pilots and served in the Vietnam War.

“The Hawaii Wing’s tsunami alert flights are among the most important missions performed by Civil Air Patrol,” Lonergan said. “Our aircrews train year-round and have provided this valuable service for more than 50 years now. Their vigilant efforts have saved countless lives.”

The training accident's cause is under investigation.

...........................................

Robert D. Shumway

1939 ~ 2022

Captain Robert (Bob) D. Shumway, age 82, was born on April 29, 1939, in Hollywood, CA to Kenneth and Roberta Shumway. Bob has three sisters; he was the third of the four children. He grew up in Halcyon, CA, where his father was a general construction contractor.

He attended High school in Arroyo Grande, CA and college at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, CA.

Bob held several summer jobs and worked as a forest fire fighter in State Division of Forestry during 1957 and 1959.

As a young boy of six years, Bob’s Dad took him on a flight from the Oceano Airport. This ignited a fire in the young boy, which could not be extinguished.

Bob’s lifetime goal was to become a pilot, a dream which he pursuit, despite hurdles put in his way, he never lost sight of his dream!

He earned his private pilot certificate in 1959 and thereafter entered USN flight training at NAS Pensacola. At completion of his flight training Bob took the mandatory flight physical. This process included the completion of a medical form on which he checked hay fever. The Naval Flight Surgeon disallowed him to fly, despite the appeal of several California Senators, the medical opinion could not be overruled. Bob received an honorable discharge from the Navy.

One can imagine his distress and disappointment; perhaps the biggest hurdle of them all, but looking back, it saved Bob from serving in Vietnam!

For four years, Bob served as a California Highway Patrol officer, covering the riots in Watts; but finally, his dream to fly became reality, and Bob was hired by Northwest Airlines (NWA) on May 15, 1967. During his NWA career Bob flew Boeing 727, Boing 737, DC-10, Boeing 747 (200/400), Boeing 757 and 767. Bob retired in 1994, after 27 years with NWA.

He enjoyed hunting, hunted in Africa several times, loved hunting moose and capercaillie in Norway with his wife, whom he called his “killer” wife! Fishing, a great gun collection, and flying his Twin Bonanza J 50 were his other passions.

Bob had his waterfront home on the Key peninsula, where his wife and black Labrador enjoyed swimming, while Bob had fun with his boat.

Bob had hip surgery last December, had several other complications and passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his home on March 16, 2022.

He is survived by his wife Ingrid, daughters Roberta, Natalie and Kimberly, granddaughter Lauren, grandson Joey. Opa Bob loved being Great Grandpa to two wonderful girls, 7-year-old Riley and 2-year-old Charlie.

Bob was very much loved by his family and many friends, who joined us in Bob’s memorable Celebration of Life in April, on what would have been his 83rd birthday. Bob and Ingrid would have celebrated their 30th anniversary in July. He is greatly missed!

Read, Richard C. "Dick" age 61, of Lino Lakes -1977 grad of Irondale High School and former Delta Airlines pilot, took flight into divine life on December 23, 2021, at home amid his loving family and friends. A wonderfully bright light on this Earth went out that day, but now shines its warmth and beauty from heaven. Dick loved life and people, and they both loved him back. He radiated exceptional friendliness and a helpful hand to all he encountered - whether to total strangers or his family and friends, and was remembered as much by his kindness to others as by his size and stature. Dick loved anything motorized and was happiest when driving the roads, snowmobiling the trails, jet-skiing the waves, or flying among the clouds. He was also known for his calm demeanor and easy manner - unless driving behind slow or distracted drivers! He is surely missed by all who knew and loved him, including his father Richard (Joanne) Read, mother Sandra Burrill, siblings Renee (Rob) Stafford, Mike (Karen) Read, Suzanne (Jim) Schilling; and several nieces, nephews and step-siblings. About the Author

James W. Woeber was born on September 30, 1926, in Denver, Colorado. He grew up in Bakersfield, California, where he attended St. Francis Elementary School. In 1940, he entered the Catholic seminary in Los Angeles. In 1948, he joined the US Air Force and served four years as a flight instructor in the AT6 primary trainer. While based at Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas, he met and married Lucy Ann Demmer and had five children. In 1953, he was hired as a pilot by Delta Air Lines. For the next thirty-three years, he flew every airplane Delta had, starting with the venerable DC3 and finally retiring after his last flight to Hawaii on the Lockheed TriStar wide-body jet airliner. His passionate search for alternative answers to health problems began in the seventies, when it became known that heart disease was grounding more pilots than all other causes together. The wise doctor on staff at their disability insurance company started sending the pilots to the Pritikin Longevity Center in California, where they were cured by their diet and exercise program. Since retirement, he has accumulated a truly astounding collection of alternative ways to cure many of people’s most frightful health problems.

Willis Ralph (Bill) Walden was 95 years old when he passed away at Grandbrook Memory Care nursing home in Grapevine, Texas. He was born at Drayton, N. Dak. on September 26, 1924 to Esther and Milton Walden. He graduated from Drayton schools and at age 17, he joined the Navy. From 1941 to 1945, he was a fighter pilot, flying from aircraft carriers in the Pacific. He returned home after the war and enrolled at the University of North Dakota. He and Verna Hedman married on September 9, 1949 and lived in Grand Forks until Bill graduated from the university.

They moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Northwest Airlines for a year before being hired by Delta Airlines. They moved to Atlanta where Bill received training on several aircraft during the following years. In 1952 they moved to New Orleans and Bill flew most of his trips to islands in the Caribbean and to South America. Their son Wade Harland Walden was born on October 17, 1954. They transferred to Chicago in 1962 and lived there until 1979 when Bill elected to move to Dallas, Texas in order to fly Delta routes to Germany and England. At that time, airline pilots were required to retire at age 60, so in 1981, he finished his 33 years with Delta.

For the next 30 years, he was busy with his computer, enjoying a lot of work for business and pleasure. Two of his nieces kept up frequent e-mail correspondence with him. Faye Roberson in Crestline, Calif. and Tami Egeland in Grafton, N. Dak.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, Nina Devlin, brother Cecil (Sharon) Walden and sister Harriett (Bob) Cook, Uncles Willis (Dot) Devlin and Ralph Devlin, Aunts Ruth (Wilbur) Hoselton and Mary (Leslie) Bates and Cousin Ruthann Bates Jorde.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Walden, son Wade Walden, daughter-in-law Charmaine Walden and two granddaughters, Dr. Lauren Walden and Alexandra Walden. He is also survived by two nieces, two nephews, a Cousin Cathryn Wilkinson and the two cousins he grew up with – Margaret Torrey and Donald Bates. The members of his immediate family live in the Dallas area.
