…..this news has been shared by the DFW 60th Bum Group………the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Skip Sparry, age 83.  Captain Sparry joined Delta Air Lines 05-03-1965 and retired with Delta based DFW/030.  He is survived by his wife Dorothy ‘Dottie’ and his daughters.  Please see available information below.

~ IN MEMORY ~

Military veteran, DL Capt. Harold (Skip) Lee Sparry

August 19, 1937 - July 7, 2021

The following is from Jack Vickers:  Skip was a great guy. He and I were in a Marine Reserve Squadron and did some flying switching off as command at times. I had the help signed out for his last flight and Let him do what he wanted. He flew over to SMU and flew very low near the women's dorm and when I got back Skipper was not happy because a professor got our tail number and called us in. I told the skipper that Sparry was giving the girls a fly by and he understood since it was Skip and he was always pulling something like that. His wife said she remembers that day for it was her he was looking for. She said we were just about on the ground.

Skips father was also named Harold and was always called Skip.

Wife is Dottie, married June 8, 1968. There will be no service and his body went to Southwestern Medical. Skip's passion was biking and a strong member of the Rails to Trails converting old abandoned rail lines to trails.

Dottie can't remember when he joined Delta but he had close to 31 years when he retired so it must have been close to my year (Jack Vickers), June 1966. He had to be a class or two ahead of me because I flew engineer on the DC-6/7 with him flying junior co-pilot as I remember. Too far back.

Skip leaves his wife Dottie, two daughters, one living here and one in Brooklyn, and a son living in Portland.

Skip Sparry

Sparry’s cycling resume is extremely impressive. At 73, the Plano resident added to his resume by winning a gold medal and two silvers at the U.S. Masters.

What may be even more impressive is Sparry’s resume off the bike. He’s an ex-Marine and a retired pilot for Delta Airlines. Sparry also has the pleasure of being a pilot for a special guest.

“He was once a pilot for President Lyndon B. Johnson,” Chenowth said. “Skip started riding in the 40s, but he has had an incredible life away from the track.”

Sparry won the first medal of the week for C-Revolution. Quickly following his success were cyclists such as Frisco residents Nelson Li and Kirt Bickel. Li, a biomedical technician, and Bickel, a writer, each won one gold and two silver medals.

Obituary :  Captain Joe Franklin Watson

Waldo Funeral Home - Sherman TX

Frank Watson, 81, was welcomed into Heaven surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 11:47 pm. A small, family graveside service was held at Friendship Cemetery in Sherman, TX. on Sunday morning, April 25, 2021. As if God knew his family needed some extra encouragement that morning, his service ended in church bells ringing and a flock of beautiful white birds flying in formation overhead.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/226147448/joe-franklin-watson

Frank was born in Nashville, Arkansas on May 12, 1939, the youngest of two sons born to Herma Pate and William Ordis Watson. He attended and graduated from Nashville High School in Arkansas and later attended and graduated with honors from the University of Arkansas in 1962. He was granted an appointment into the Air Force Academy, but because of the untimely death of his father, he made the decision to stay close to home to help his mother with the family business. Following his college graduation, he entered Officer Training School in the US Air Force.

While in pilot training in Enid, OK, he met his future bride at church, Peggy Ann Lee. They married on December 22, 1963 and began their service in the Air Force at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, GA.

Frank earned his way up the ranks to Captain. He was a gifted pilot and used his skills to train pilots during the Vietnam War era.  Upon completion of six years in the USAF, Frank made the decision to fly commercially. He was hired by Delta Airlines in 1968 and was based out of Dallas, TX . He flew for 26 years. It was during this time that they moved their family to Sherman, TX, where they raised their children.

During his tenure at Delta, he captained many aircraft. His teaching skills were also recognized commercially as he was a designated check pilot. He retired as Captain on the Boeing 767.

His career ended too early at the age of 54 due to underlining heart conditions, but he and Peggy enjoyed their retirement years traveling with his brother Bill Watson, Jr. and wife, Marva and her sister Linda and husband, Ron Chlipala. There were many cruises and trips overseas that kept them busy and happy. They especially enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and nieces, Stephanie Chlipala Tan and Elizabeth Chlipala. They also loved spending time with their church friends and their Bridge group.

Frank and Peggy's marriage was gifted with three daughters, their husbands, five grandchildren and one granddaughter-in-law.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, daughters, their families and other close, extended family members. Peggy Ann Lee Watson; Andrea W. and Curry Vogelsang Drew and wife, Lauren Vogelsang; Jennifer W. and Mike McAda, Jared McAda and Jordan McAda; Katie W. and Brian Ricci, Sophia Ricci and Nina Ricci.

Frank's spiritual guidance for his family is a legacy that lives on. His love for his Lord and Savior was evidenced in how he lived his life. Frank was always giving of himself, whether it was physically, spiritually or monetarily. He left an exampled life in how to "pay it forward" and how to extend a helping hand whenever needed. Frank and Peggy were long time members of First Baptist Church in Sherman, but in recent years were found worshiping in their neighborhood church of Western Heights Church of Christ.

A sweet realization for his family came as they witnessed Frank earning his Heavenly wings on the same day in April that he soloed for his earthly pilot wings. April 22 is indeed a very special day in the life of Joe Franklin Watson. We know that Frank is now living his best life at the feet of Jesus and we all look forward to seeing him again one day.

Obituary :  Clyde Stuart Eberhardt

“Musicians play music.  Stuart’s music is flight.” – Jim Ricketts

The family of Stuart Eberhardt said their final goodbyes to this amazing human being after his long fight with several different cancers. In the end, it was esophageal cancer that overcame him, but Stu battled tenaciously against it to the very end, engaging that same fighter’s spirit he used during his very impressive life of 84 years.

As a young teenage boy, Stu knew that flying was in his blood. He would bike to nearby Arlington Heights, IL airport and offer his services to clean and service airplanes in exchange for lessons and flying time. This strong work ethic and passion for flying led Stu to become a flight instructor at age 18.

In his 20’s, Stu flew DC-3’s for North Central Airlines and flew F-84F and F-86 planes for the Air National Guard in Springfield, IL. He was also in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1968-69 flying A-4’s in Alameda CA.

It was in 1964, though, that he began working his dream job as a Pan Am Captain. His international routes allowed him to take his family to countries such as Germany, Fiji, Australia, etc. for months at a time. Pan Am, however, eventually filed for Chapter 11 in 1991, and Delta Air Lines became Stu’s new “work home”. He retired from Delta in 1996.

In 1989, Stu qualified for the first time in the Unlimited Class at the Reno Air Races with his P-51 Mustang, Merlin’s Magic, Race 22. During the years, it became a family affair with Stu and his son Bill, racing the P-51; his son Jim racing the T-6, Archimedes; and his wife Marilyn functioning as airplane-team manager and pit point person. For over 20 years, the races would be the focal point of the year, bringing together not only family but a wonderful crew and many close friends. Those were no doubt the greatest years for Stu and were “high adventure.” And of course, it is said, “a family that flies together… stays together.”

In retirement, Stu traveled with the Collings Foundation flying their P-51 and B-25 at different airports around the United States. He teamed up with John Ward flying his B-25 Old Glory.  A standout memory during those years was Stu giving Chuck Yeager recurrency training.

Over the years, not only did Stu become one of the most exceptional pilots of his generation, but many people who crossed paths with Stu often commented on Stu and Marilyn’s generosity and utter selflessness in the giving of their time, advice, knowledge, and hospitality. Many were in awe of Stu’s talent as a pilot, but his kind actions as a human being propelled him into the stratosphere of “awesome” to many who knew him. Stu was a beautiful blend of “badass cool” and “humility” that drew so many people to himself.

Aside from flying, Stu was a stellar husband, dad, father-in-law, and grandfather. With his own hands and tools, he single handedly built fences, planted a vineyard, created a wine cellar, added an apartment to his garage, made additions to his home, paved his own driveway, built trellises and lofts for his kids’ homes, and created and completed many other endless projects. His handyman skills were limitless. His home and property are filled with his signature handiwork.

Stuart is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 61 years; his two sons Jim and Bill; his two daughters-in-law, Sandi and Dawn; and his 5 grandchildren, Julia, Megan, Nathan, Nick, and Kalli. His presence in this world will be missed by so many, but especially his family.

I know of no one else who has had such a rich set of life experiences. He accomplished so much and valued family so vigorously.

He built this F86.  It is now sitting on display at a museum.  I am trying to get them to make a sign acknowledging that.

NWA CAPT. ELMER UDD

APRIL 11, 1924 – APRIL 29, 2021

 https://obits.staradvertiser.com/2021/07/25/elmer-udd-25072021/

Dad would first describe himself as a pilot, from the first time he saw planes over the farm in Kent, Washington until his death. He told his caregiver he was getting ready for a flight and he had to do this one alone. Dad logged over 40,000 hours in many different planes both in the Navy and for NWA; he made Captain in both. Retirement was mandatory at age 60, so he started a glider business, Soar Hawaii, at Dillingham Field and drove the entire diagonal of the island almost every day to fly either a Grob glider or the taildragger tow plane. He flew another 20 plus years after "retirement". Dad shared his love of flying with many students, signing their first solos, and thrilling many others with acrobatic stunts in the glider. He flew his last solo into the heavens on the 29th of April, 2021 in Honolulu. His children, Susan Marie (Udd) McKellar and Thomas Edward Udd and his step- children, Karen Bushaw and S. USAF CMSgt, NWA Dale Frank Richardson

~ IN MEMORY ~

USAF CMSgt, NWA Dale Frank Richardson

November 14, 1947 ~ June 30, 2021

Notification with the passing of retired Northwest Airlines Flight Instructor/Flight Operations Manager and USAF ret. CMSgt Dale Frank Richardson, age 73.  Please see available information below.

Thank you,

~ Carol for the PCN

Obituary : Chief Master Sergeant Dale Frank Richardson, born November 14, 1947 in Chewelah WA, passed away on June 30, 2021 at age 73 after a journey with cancer contracted as a result of Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. A decorated veteran, he died surrounded by his wife and children at his home in Tavares, FL.

At age 18, Dale enlisted in the Air Force for two tours of duty in the Vietnam War where he flew 266 combat missions as a flight mechanic on C-47 aircraft. After serving in the war, Dale returned to the US to continue what would be 22 years of honorable service in the United States Air Force. He was particularly instrumental in the Air Force’s KC-10 program. After retiring from the Air Force in 1988, Dale's experience served him well in his second career as a Pilot Instructor and Flight Operations Manager on DC-10 aircraft at Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following Northwest’s merger with Delta, Dale declined a move to Atlanta and retired after 22 years with the airline.

While serving in the Air Force at Offutt AFB in Omaha NE, Dale met and fell in love with Linda Johannes, who he married a year later in 1972. They had two children, Jesse and Laurie. In 2010, they built their retirement home on the Apple River near the town of Amery WI, where he enjoyed visiting with family and his grandchildren. He and Linda then became snowbirds, splitting their time between Amery WI and the warm weather and community of Tavares FL.

Dale enjoyed bass fishing, golfing, and tinkering around in his garage/workshop. He felt particularly fulfilled by performing final military honors at veterans’ funerals and leading the parade at several of the annual small-town celebrations in his community. He also devoted countless hours to the Amery aquatic weed harvester program as Operations Manager and harvester operator, improving the quality of the Apple River for the Amery community. He was the type of man who “never met a piece of steel he didn’t like,” built his own fishing rods, and would drop everything to help family, friends, and community.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore “Frank” Richardson and Helen Barrett, and his brothers, Don Richardson and Larry Richardson. He is survived by his wife Linda Richardson of Tavares FL, his sister Jan Pearson of Kamiah ID, his brother Doug Barrett of Marysville WA, his children Jesse Richardson and Laurie Sweep of Amery WI, and his grandchildren, Frances Ardelle Richardson and Sylvia Dale Richardson.

There will be a celebration of Dale's life in Amery, Wisconsin at a time and location to be announced. All who knew Dale will be welcome.

Obituary :  Barbara Green Friedline, formerly of Williamson, GA and recent resident of Madison passed away on November 6 at the new home she shared for the last two years with her late husband Jim.  The couple had moved to Madison to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Greg Strelecki.

Barbara was born in 1928 to the late Eunice and Noble Green in Big Lake, TX.  When she was very young her family moved to various oil towns in Texas and Mississippi where her father worked in the oil fields.  She told a wrenching story of waking up one cold winter morning covered with snow that had filtered through a hole in the tent where they lived on one of the drilling sites.

On March 18, 1937 Barbara was fortunate to be among the first-through-fourth graders who had been let out of school early.  She was safe at home at 3:17 pm when one of the buildings on the New London School campus erupted in a violent explosion caused by an electric sander spark igniting an undetected natural gas leak.  The blast was heard as far away as the oil field where dozens of Roughnecks, including Noble, rushed to the scene and dug frantically to save any survivors and recover the children and teachers killed by the terrible accident.

The tragic event haunted the family for years. Barbara painfully recounted her father’s digging with hands and shovel in an exhausting effort to pull children from the wreckage.  Noble went home just long enough to make sure Barbara was there with her mother. There he became physically sick in reaction to the carnage he’d seen but ran back to the site to continue the rescue efforts.  His rushing into danger instead of away from it was a trait shared by Barbara and one she was fortunate to find in her future husband and which was passed on to their children and found in their son-in-law.

Always mindful of her being spared an early death, Barbara went on to be an outstanding student, playing clarinet in the band and being chosen as Drum Major.  She also played the piano, sewed her own stylish dresses and even made her own shoes when the family couldn’t afford store-bought.  Thankful for what they did have, she said she never felt poor because her family always had something to eat even if it was only pinto beans and cornbread.  But most importantly of all, they had love.  Her sisters followed in her footsteps as intelligent beauties and majorettes, accomplished career women, excellent mothers and super grandmothers!

After graduating at the top of her high school class, Barbara moved to Carbondale, IL and landed her much loved job of Executive Secretary to the head of the Department of Transportation located near the small local airport where she met the love of her life!  James Russell Friedline was handsome, thoughtful, talented and unlike anyone she had ever met before.  He was a private pilot and partner in his father’s construction company, CW Friedline and Sons.

This was the beginning of a love affair and marriage that lasted 72 years and produced two loving children, Karen and Mark of whom Barb and Jim were extremely proud.  A fiercely loyal and loving daughter and sibling, Barbara (Baba to her sibs) expressed those same traits as a devoted, selfless and supportive wife, mother and mother-in-law.  She cared passionately for her family and tirelessly encouraged them to pursue their own dreams.  She was the first teacher, friend, defender and champion of her young children.  She always found time to serve as room-mother and volunteered in the Nurse’s Office at Lakeshore High School where both kids graduated and went on to college and successful careers. She had willingly taken on the full-time job of raising their two children while Jim worked hard at his dream job as a pilot for Delta Air Lines.  As secretary of the Delta Pilots’ Wives Bowling league she enjoyed a high-scoring athletic pastime that kept her slim and trim.

Since 1975 Barb and Jim (as they were known to friends) lived a quiet but interesting country life at their private airstrip in Williamson where the rhythmic rumble of round engine biplanes mingled with the lively honks of migrating Canada geese smoothly touching down on the pond.  Barbara worked just as hard as Jim renovating the 1960’s ranch house on the property where they had a large vegetable garden and hangar.  They loved listening to the tree frogs at night and even bottle-fed a calf that had been rejected by its novice mother.  Life on the farm was beautiful and busy and they loved the peace and quiet of the country as well as the army of friends who were regular fly-in visitors.

Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim Friedline; parents Eunice and Noble Green; friends and brothers-in-law Ted Bullard and Charles D Friedline; in-laws Mildred and Charles W Friedline; all her maternal aunts and uncles as well as her son whom she adored, Mark Brian Friedline.  Though she is no longer on this earth her presence is felt every day and “Mommy has left her mark on everyone she loved and who loved her.”

She is survived by her devoted daughter Karen Friedline Strelecki and husband Greg “The Big Man” Strelecki; her beautiful and accomplished sisters Ginger Bullard and Sandy Taylor; her caring brother-in-law Steve Taylor; her dearest nieces Becca Kaczmarek and family, Abbie Paulding and family and her big hearted nephew Rusty Bullard and family.  She leaves behind her cherished grandson, US Army Chief Warrant Officer-Four Arthur Hugh Dye II, his beautiful wife Megan and Barbara’s four great-grand daughters Alicia Faith, Lettie Shea, Amelia James and Cass Kearney-J Dye, sweet, smart and all “her pretty little girls!”

Saundra Lea 'Saundy' Cobb

June 28, 2021

Oceanside, CA

Saundra, age 79, passed away on June 28, 2021, while receiving care at Scripps Encinitas Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband, Nathan "Nate" Cob, sons Jeffrey (Rachelle) and Joshua; daughters Dayna and Karina (Paul) Peterson, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include her brother Schuyler Olson, and other extended family members. Saundy lived a full and adventurous life. The early years found her in Pensacola, FL, with Nate earning his wings as a naval aviator. After completing this training, they found themselves being relocated to bases around the country. In 1968, after accepting a pilot position with Northwest Airlines and with two kids in tow, they settled in Bloomington, MN. It was in Minnesota that the Cobb clan would eventually grow to include four kids. However, that itch to move needed to be scratched every few years. Relocations continued to occur (Hastings and Marine). When all the Cobb kids finally moved out of the house, the moving happened in earnest. Saundy and Nate proceeded to live in Hawaii, Washington State, Arizona, and finally California. Except for Hawaii, each move included several moves within that state. We never did figure out who they were trying to avoid...Saundy loved every aspect of being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She played with her kids, she traveled with them, and supported them as they became adults. Saundy and Nate traveled the country to visit with their grandkids and great-grandkids. She created great memories with them all.She loved her animals as much as her kids (sometimes more). Through the years, dogs and cats were center in her life. Lest we forget; horses, rabbits, and a gerbil were also in the mix. Saundy truly loved all of God's creatures. However, it was in her artwork where Saundy truly shined. She loved learning new ideas and skills, and attended both the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) from 1979 - 81, and the Oregon College of Arts and Craft (OCAC) from 1995-96. Saundy's talents were expressed mostly through sketches and paintings. Her subjects included portraits of people, animals, and family pets. She was also a gifted photographer, the pictures she captured through the years were remarkable. Saundy truly saw beauty in the world and loved to share this with those around her. Lastly, when she learned how to send a text message on her phone - she never stopped doing so. Somehow someway she texted all those she loved a daily message of affection, including a final message to all within minutes of her unexpected passing. Those loving messages will be sorely missed. A remembrance of Saundy's life is scheduled for August 2, 2021, at 11am, at the Daybreak Church in Carlsbad, CA.As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Daybreak Church, 6515 Ambrosia Lane, Carlsbad, CA 92011. A second remembrance will occur at a later date in Minnesota.
