Obituary :  Captain Ulus Gerald "Jerry" Buice passed away quietly at home surrounded by family on March 25th, 2021 after a decades-long battle with skin cancer. Born November 19th 1942, Jerry was a lifelong aviator, inventor and outdoorsman. He grew up in Miami, attended Coral Gables High School and the University of Florida. He flew his first solo flight at age 16 from Tamiami field. By age 20 he earned a commercial license with multi-engine, flight instructor and commercial ratings and was hired by United Airlines. Across four decades with United, the last two decades as Captain, Jerry flew nearly 10 million miles in a variety of aircraft including the DC-6, Vickers Viscount, DC-8, 737 and 727. He completed his commercial career on the 747 flying over the Pacific.

He followed in the footsteps of his father, Delta Air Lines Captain Noble "Tex" Buice as an ardent defender of pilot working conditions (safe crew scheduling in particular) and passenger safety through over 30 years of support for the Air Line Pilots Association. Jerry taught himself to code and independently developed effective crew scheduling software before computer science was popular.

In parallel with his commercial flight career, Jerry was proud to own, maintain and fly several small private aircraft throughout his life including J-3 and PA-12 Piper Cubs, a Stinson, Piper Aztec, 1935 Bucher Jungmann and Diamond Katana Motor Glider. His lifetime of passion for flight is recognized with his inclusion on the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Wall of Honor.

Jerry loved anything that moved fast including go-carts, motorcycles, boats and sports cars. He invested his free time outdoors with family and friends enjoying fishing, camping, scouting, biking, boating, jogging, walking on the beach or hiking through the mountains on multiple continents. He naturally loved to travel and felt blessed to visit more than 20 countries. His favorite destinations in the world included Wengen, Switzerland and Sanibel/Captiva, Florida. He also loved coming home from every adventure to the same neighborhood in Boulder, CO for more than 50 years. Jerry was an avid inventor and tinkerer in his shop, whether rebuilding an engine from the rings up or inventing a novel hinge mechanism, an innovative bread slicer, a pneumatic baseball pitching machine or a wind tunnel to explore wing aerodynamics.

Jerry is survived by his former wife Joanne Buice, sons Carl Buice and Erik Buice and their families including four grandchildren he loved dearly. In addition, he is survived by his adoring sisters Bebe Johnson, Chrisy Woods and their families. Memorial services will be planned at a future time due to COVID-19. In lieu of flowers or donations to charity, please consider honoring his memory by protecting yourself consistently with sunscreen.

Obituary  :  Michael Robert Juhl, 57, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on December 14, 2020, after a 16 month battle with ALS.

Mike loved his idyllic childhood in the small town of Dike, Iowa and often said those were the best years of his life. He told many stories of playing with his army men in the sandbox and working in the school shop with his dad. He wanted those, who touched his life in Iowa, to know that he loved and appreciated you.

After graduating from Iowa State University, Mike joined the United States Air Force and began his journey to becoming a commercial airline pilot. He served our country in Desert Storm flying C-130s where he earned the Air Medal for meritorious service. After leaving the Air Force, Mike was offered a position with Delta Air Lines and spent 29 years doing something he passionately loved: flying the Boeing 757/767. He even had a “signature move” in those extremely soft, smooth landings in which he took great pride.

Mike Juhl was the “fun” uncle, dad, friend and husband. He was known to laugh in a movie with wild abandon and if he told you a story, you made sure to give him a wide berth for his waving hands and arms he used for emphasis. He loved a thrill and if he took a spill over the handlebars of his mountain bike or down the mountain while skiing (something he called a yard sale) it was with a great badge of honor. It made for a good story to tell later with those waving arms. Passionately he loved his son, Mason, and considered him his best friend. He taught great lessons of life, love, work, and design and was so proud of the man Mason has become. Their bond was admirable and their laughter abundant. The other love of his life was his wife, Elizabeth. They met on a blind date in 2011 and Mike would later tell the story that when he saw her pass the window to the restaurant, life turned into slow motion with the song “Dream Weaver” playing in the background. He would say to her “I love you to the moon, Baby”! Although ALS stole from him and tortured him, he still managed a smile for everyone. He wanted his family to know, “I have loved every moment of my life and I’m glad each of you were a part of it. Thank you for giving me your love and letting me love you...I LOVE OUR FAMILY!”

Mike is survived by his much loved wife Elizabeth, son Mason, step daughter Caroline House, and his faithful dog Riley, all of Dallas, TX; parents Richard and Joann Juhl, Dike, IA; sister Connie (Dan) Vella, Canton, MI; brother David (Julie) Juhl, Des Moines, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. At Mike’s request, his ashes will be spread in two of his favorite places: Breckinridge, Colorado and under his favorite tree in the front yard where he can forever admire the house he designed. Due to the limitations of gatherings, a service will be held at a later date. In leu of flowers, Mike would love for you to make donations to our local no kill shelter, Dog and Kitty City, https://www.dognkittycity.org/donate.html

NC/NWA Capt. Roy W. Nordstrom

~ IN MEMORY ~

NC/NWA Capt. Roy W. Nordstrom

July 30, 1934 ~ December ? , 2020

From the March issue of the ALPA magazine’s In Memoriam Column, we learn of the passing of retired Northwest Airlines pilot Captain Roy Wieland Nordstrom, age 86.  I was not able to locate an online obituary for Roy but please see below the other details that I could find.

From this online site  https://airandspace.si.edu/support/wall-of-honor/capt-roy-nordstrom  we learn that Captain Nordstrom first joined North Central Airlines in 1958 and then retired with Northwest :  “His 40+ year career began with instructing in Piper Cubs at Harlem Airport in Chicago. He then went on to fly for Slick Airways in the C-46 and DC-4, with a move to North Central Airlines in 1958. There he flew and was type-rated in the DC-3, Convair 240, 340, A440 (580), DC-9, and 727.  North Central the merged with Northwest Airlines where he continued to fly the 727 and retired on the Airbus 320.”

To the best of my knowledge, Roy was born/raised in Illinois and had most recently resided in Sycamore, Illinois near his son John.  I believe Roy was widowed in October of 2010 with the passing of his wife and former Eastern Airlines stewardess Pamala Rae West Nordstrom.

If anyone has additional information and/or corrections to share, please do let us know.

Thank you,

~ Carol for the PCN

Obituary  :  John Araiza

September 29, 1931 - September 27, 2020

Palmetto Bay, Florida - For many people, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is the title of a popular movie. For John Araiza, it's a snapshot of the passions of his life.

John passed away September 27, 2020 – just two days short of his 89th birthday. He spent his life in service to his Lord, country, community, and large, extended family.

He was born September 29, 1931 in Allensworth, CA (pop 500), in a one-room house with no electricity and an ice box for a refrigerator. John shared the home with his parents and seven brothers and sisters. His father (Juan) worked for the Sante Fe Railway - fortunate to be employed during the Great Depression.

John's mother (Maria-Dolores) passed away when he was a young boy. The brothers and sisters raised themselves while their father worked. After moving several times, the family settled down in Shafter, CA, a farming community in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Every morning before school, John and his siblings would feed the goats, gather fresh eggs from the chickens, and milk their cow. After school, John and his brothers would find odd jobs to help make ends meet. They would work in the fruit & vegetable packing sheds, or in the fields picking produce or cotton.

As challenging as these time were, John's boyhood was filled with adventure. He and his siblings & friends would spend summer days jumping onto haybales in the fields and picking & eating fresh apricots and grapes in the orchards. On hot days, they would swim in the rivers and streams in the foothills of the nearby Tehacahapi Mountains.

As a young teen, John would follow his father to the railroad yard. He was fascinated by the large locomotives and the hundreds of boxcars that entered the railyard every day. To spend more time around the trains, John took a job counting the freight cars and preparing the manifest used to schedule the loading of the cars with freight. It was a late-night job, and John would work in the railyard until the middle of the night - then hurry home for a little sleep before getting up for school.

As fascinated as he was with trains, he was more enamored by airplanes. John would sit at the edge of the fields as the crop dusters would fly over the farms, spraying the crops below. Then, he would ride his bike to the fence of the local airfield to watch the planes take off and land. John knew his future would be flying - high above the clouds…

While much of his money from afterschool jobs helped buy food and clothes for his family, John saved a portion to pay for flying lessons. He would never miss an opportunity to fly, and eventually earn his pilot's license.

Upon graduating from Shafter High School, John was offered a full-time job with Santa Fe Railway. However, John had other ideas: He wanted to go to college and become a commercial airline pilot.

John knew he could not afford the college tuition – but his younger brother Ike had an idea. Ike had just joined the Navy to earn money for college. Ike told "Johnnie" to do the same. John decided to follow Ike's advice: He would join the US Navy, apply to be a military pilot to earn more hours in the cockpit, and save money for college.

The Korean War started around the time John enlisted. Trained pilots were desperately needed. Most Navy pilots were officers, trained by the military. Although John was not an officer, he was already a licensed pilot and was quickly assigned to a squadron.

John was stationed onboard aircraft carriers, with fighter squadron VF-54, better known as the Hells-Angels. The exploits of the carrier-based Hells Angels would become the inspiration for The Bridges at Toko-Ri a novella by American author James A. Michener. The book details the experiences of US Navy pilots in the Korean war, as they undertake a mission to destroy heavily protected bridges in enemy territory.

He would serve his country from 1951 to 1954...

John was stationed in New Jersey for his final months in the military. Here he would meet his wife, Frances Alloco. At the time there were very few openings for commercial airline pilots, so John returned to his first love – trains. He became a conductor for the Erie Railroad in New Jersey.

John grew homesick for his family and the warm weather of Southern California. He also wanted to be closer to the airline industry, since many commercial airlines had large operations in California. In the mid 1950's John and Frances packed their car, drove across the country, and moved to Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles.

John secured an airplane mechanic job with Western Airlines. He was also ready to go to college. His plan to enroll in college would be delayed when Western Airlines hired him as a pilot/flight engineer. Only a year later, he lost his job during a pilot's strike.

The year was 1959 and John had a year-old son (James) at home. He knew he needed to work to support his young family, but decided it was "now or never" to go to college. John enrolled in El Camino Community College by day and took another airline mechanic job at night – this time at National Airlines. After two years at El Camino, he transferred to Long Beach State, where he earned a Batcheler's degree in Industrial Arts and Engineering - and was admitted to the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Once again, a chance to get back into the cockpit arose – this time with National Airlines. The airline had enough pilots, but a shortage of flight engineers. John knew this was his calling – to use his mechanical skills and fly for a living.

For the better part of three decades John was a flight engineer for National Airlines, then Pan American World Airways and finally retired from Delta Airlines.

His career would take him to every continent except Antarctica. Frances would often join him. They explored New Zealand, went on a safari in South Africa, and went sightseeing several times throughout Europe.

In 1966 John transferred from Los Angeles to National Airlines' home base in Miami, FL. Frances and James soon followed, when John found a home in a South Miami-Dade suburb (now The Village of Palmetto Bay).

When he was not flying John stayed busy "on the ground." He obtained a Florida teacher's certificate. On his days off he would serve as a substitute teacher for the Miami Dade school system. He loved to teach shop, science, and auto repair classes. John wanted to share with students the skills, training and education that had carried him from the farms to the skies.

In his neighborhood, John was the local, "Mr. Fix-It." His friends and neighbors would come to him with car trouble, or if something needed attention in their homes. If it were electrical or mechanical John could fix it. Even after retiring from flying and teaching, John remained active working on cars, and making repairs to his home and his rental properties.

Frances passed away in 2002. John made a commitment to dedicate the rest of his life to serving his community, practicing philanthropy, and worshipping our Lord. For the next two decades until his death, John served as a Rotarian, attended weekly Bible study, and was a benefactor for many charitable organizations.

During one of his daily morning exercise walks, John met the next love of his life, Carol Bowers. John and Carol would be companions for many years. Together, they attended church, went to dinner (even occasionally dancing) and traveled.

John never forgot his roots. From the challenges of his youth, he learned the value of hard work, education, and never losing sight of your dreams. He cherished his family and friends. Each year he would gather for reunions with the surviving members of his Navy squadron, and fellow flight crews from the airlines.

Every summer, John would return to his hometown of Shafter and visit with his brothers, sisters, nephews, and nieces. Picnics in the farms, bonfires on the beach, and backyard barbeques with family and childhood friends created memories for a lifetime.

A couple months before his passing, John sat with his son James and reflected on his life. "I have truly been blessed. It's been a good life!"

Spouse  :  ARAIZA FRANCES, age 73,

passed away peacefully in her home on June 27, 2003. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Raphael and Romilda Alloco, Frances was born January 3, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Patterson, New Jersey, surrounded by the love and warmth of a large, multi-generation Italian family. In 1954, Frances married John Araiza, a veteran Navy pilot from the Korean war, and a train brakeman for the Erie Railroad in New York. In 1956, they moved to John's home state of California, so John could pursue a career in aviation. It was in California that Frances blossomed into a community volunteer; a dedication that would be her calling card for life. An active member of the Church of the Nativity, a Catholic Church and elementary school, in Torrance California, Frances helped create the school's first student library, where her son, James, attended school. She then served as the school's volunteer librarian for three years. At the same time, Frances wanted to improve the overall community of southern California, so she joined the California Republican party. She became a loyal campaign worker for local and state politicians, and eventually ran the campaign headquarters for Ronald Reagan's successful bid as California Governor. In 1965, the family moved to Miami, Florida, where Frances continued her dedication to volunteer causes. She joined Patricia Villacorta to establish a student library at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Frances enrolled her son in elementary school at Epiphany Catholic Church in South Miami, and became that school's volunteer librarian. She served the students, priests and teachers of Epiphany for over 10 years. Frances joined the parish of St. Richard. She attended mass daily, and continued to serve her fellow parishioners, in a variety of volunteer roles. Frances continued to serve the Florida State and national Republican Party. For her efforts, she was selected to serve as now-President Ronald Reagan's secretary during visits to South Florida. When Miami's Metrozoo moved from Crandon Park to its present location in South Dade, Frances saw an opportunity to share her love of animals with others. She became a Zoo Docent, and taught classes to children, as well as a tour guide and a volunteer assistant to the zookeepers and curators. For 15 years, Frances gave her time and love to the Metrozoo family. Frances loved baseball, Frank Sinatra, and John Wayne, but her greatest joy was the gift of love, care and friendship she shared with animals, her friends and family. The Godmother of Gary Gorga and Mary Delaney, Frances is survived by her husband, John, son James, daughter-in- law Jana, and a large, close family of cousins and dear friends.
