Sad news from friends and family with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member Pat Nease.  Pat was the widow of C&S/Delta Air Lines Captain Bill Sigman Nease who was born 20-Jun-1925, hired 7-May-1951, and who died 21-Oct-1985 at age 60.

 

From friends and family:  “I regret to inform you that longtime friend of everybody PAT NEASE passed away. She was the widow of DAL Capt. Billy Nease and brother of DAL Capt. Bob Ritchie.  Although she worked in the Miami Chief pilots office years most people did not know that she worked without compensation.  However, she quickly became a respected and irreplaceable member of the team.  Those wishing to contact the family can call her brother Bob at 817 750 1971. Funeral arrangements will be for family only at Pat's request.  May her memory be eternal.”

She was predeceased by: her parents, A. G. Ritchie and Katherine Kulmer Ritchie; and her husband Billy Nease. She is survived by: her brother Bob Ritchie (Valerie); her nephew Robbie Ritchie (Kaleigh); her niece Shelby Ritchie Rock (Will Rock); and her great-niece Bailey Jo.

Obituary : Mr. Albert Smith, age 95, of Social Circle passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021.  He was born September 20, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Albert Edward and Agnes Ann Barwig Smith who have preceded him in death.  Mr. Smith attended the Navy Pre-Flight Program at the University of North Carolina and later received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.  He proudly served in the United States Navy and was a Captain with *Delta Airlines flying for 40 years.  Mr. Smith enjoyed tennis, shooting sports, personal fitness, and was an avid reader.  Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son David Smith and his wife Helen Smith.

 

Mr. Smith is survived by his children; Linda and Philip Smith of Dallas, Georgia, Mark S. Smith of Conyers, Matthew W. and Sheila Smith of Mt. Airy, Georgia, Carol Nicholson of Douglasville, Georgia, Michael A. and Dana Smith of Covington, Nancy and Brian Sutterfield of Euharlee, Georgia along with 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and his brother Jim Smith Portland Oregon.  The family regrets that the services will be private.  J.C. News has reached our group with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired C&S/Delta pilot Captain Billy Ray Scaggs, age 93.  Captain Scaggs joined Chicago & Southern Air Lines 06-19-1952 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1986, based DFW his entire career.  Widowed in July of 2014 with the passing of his wife Patsy Sue, Captain Scaggs is survived by his son Max (Beverly), his grand- and great grandchildren, plus many other dear family members and friends.

Obituary………..Billy Ray Scaggs

Services have been scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020 in the Leonard & Marker Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Bixby Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Army.

Billy Ray Scaggs, retired Delta Airline pilot, went to be with the Lord on February 14, 2020, at age 93 in Loveland, Colorado. He was born August 12, 1926 in Collinsville, Oklahoma and graduated from Will Rodgers High School in 1946. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the Army Air Corp.

Bill first learned to fly in Tulsa, Oklahoma and soloed off Harvey Young Field, at age 17. After the war he was a flight instructor for Tulsa Flying Service and in 1951 worked as a flight instructor for the Air Force in Columbus, Mississippi, giving cadets basic training in the AT6.

In 1952, Bill went to work for Chicago and Southern Airline which later merged with Delta Airline. He flew for Delta for 34 years and retired as a Captain. During his life he logged over 29,000 hours of flight time in many types of aircraft.

Mr. Scaggs was preceded in death by and his wife of 63 years, Patsy Sue (Hodges) Scaggs, his parents Richard Raymond Scaggs and Agnes Stella (Blurton) Scaggs, his sister Alla May (Scaggs) Stanley and infant brother Blever Lee Scaggs.

He is survived by his son, Clarence Maxwell Scaggs and his wife Beverly Jean Scaggs, two grandchildren, Carrie Michelle (Scaggs) Cooke and her husband Brian Cooke, and Kyle Maxwell Scaggs. He has five great-grandchildren, Patrick Edward Cooke, Sean Michael Cooke, Kelly Maureen Cooke, Zane Maxwell Scaggs and Benjamin Herron Scaggs. Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

 - Verna Lee Stover Angel was born March 2, 1925 in England, Arkansas and she died in Monroe, Louisiana on March 3, 2019 at the age of 94. A memorial service will be held on March 23, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas where she will also be interred in the columbarium.

 

She was born in England, Arkansas and was raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Like both of her parents, Lee learned to fly. On completion of her first solo flight, her father had his mechanic remove the wooden propeller as a symbol of the event. It is still displayed today. Graduating from Hot Springs High, she attended Texas Women's College in Denton, TX. After college, Lee obtained her commercial pilot's license and worked for her father, John Stover, at Stover Aviation in all aspects of business. In those days, her nickname was Smokey. She met her future husband, Paul, when he came to Hot Springs to work as both mechanic and pilot for her father. Both would go on to work for Chicago and Southern (which merged into Delta Airlines), Lee as a ticket agent and Paul as a pilot. Through the years they lived in Memphis, Houston, New Orleans, Dallas, and Atlanta before retiring back to Hot Springs.

 

Lee was very proud to be part of a flying legacy. The four generations include her mother, father, husband, son, daughter, grandson, and granddaughter.

 

She went on to be a consummate hostess, entertaining family and friends wherever she lived. Lee loved serving others, especially her grandchildren. Although they traveled the world, Lee and Paul were happiest upon returning to their home, Mosswood, on Lake Hamilton.

 

Lee was a member of Delta Beta Sigma, P.E.O. Chapter BJ, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the Westminster Presbyterian Women of the Church Lydia Circle.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Angel; and her parents, John Stover and Emily Mae Stover Offenstein.

 

She is survived by her son, John Angel and wife Laura; daughter Paula Napper and husband Marshall; step-daughter Pam Mackey and husband Wyatt; five grandchildren and their spouses: Jeff Bittle, Travis Napper and wife Brittany, Cole Napper and wife Rakshya, Emily Napper Cupp and husband Cody, Caitlin Angel Sunseri and husband Matthew; six great-grandchildren Brayden, Maddie and Bobby Bittle, Emory and Stover Napper, and Millie Terrell; half-sister Janice Holzer and husband Nick: and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to extend warm thanks to all of the wonderful employees at The Oaks' Eden Place and Ascend Hospice.

 - Howard E. Reid, age 98, of Melbourne Beach, Florida and Gilberts, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by and under the care of his family on Friday, November 23, 2018 at his home. Howard was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 16, 1920 and was the son of the late William and Hendrikje (nee Telgenhoff) Reid. He was a WWII United States Army Air Corps veteran. Following his time in the military, Howard began a 39 year distinguished career with Delta Airlines as a commercial airline pilot and earned the rank of Captain. Survivors include his beloved wife of 72 years; Helen L. Their daughters; Elizabeth "Betsy" (Bill Suworoff) Reid and Nancy Reid. His granddaughter; Elizabeth R. (Greg Schmitt) Benton. His grandson; James R. ( Meredith Peterson) Benton. Other survivors include his stepgranddaughter; Jessica Suworoff and his sister; Phyllis VanBrug. In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his sister; Mae Closterhouse and his brother; Marvin Reid. Visitation was held on Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Obituary................................KITE, Richard R.

Sept. 30, 1921 ~ March 18, 2018

Dick Kite, 96, passed away on Sunday, March 18th, 2018 and is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Kite, 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Dick grew up in Galesburg, Illinois. Growing up, he liked to visit the airfield where he was fascinated with planes and flying. He was a senior at Knox College when WWII began, he enlisted in the Navy and went through pilot training. During the war, he served in the Pacific and Atlantic. Following the war, he was based in Hawaii, where he met Helen Sturdivant whom he would marry after he flew for 6 months in the Berlin Airlift. When he was released from the Navy, he flew for Chicago and Southern Airlines that was eventually bought out by Delta, and was stationed in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1962, he was moved to Atlanta, where he spent the rest of his career flying for Delta. He used to say that he couldn't believe he got paid for doing what he loved. Dick was a member of St. James Methodist Church where he enjoyed ushering on Sunday mornings. He also enjoyed working on Habitat for Humanity houses well into his 80's. He will truly be missed by friends and family. The memorial service for Dick Kite will be held at St. James Methodist Church at 4400 Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Atlanta on Saturday, March 24th. His ashes will be interred in the columbarium at 10am with the memorial service to follow at 11am.

Obituary.....Edward Waldo 1918 - 2017

Edward Waldo Memphis, TN Retired Delta Airlines Captain Edward Waldo passed away Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Kirby Pines Retirement Community in his garden home. Edward was born in Winona, Minnesota on March 31, 1918 to the late Floyd and Anna Bollman Waldo. He grew up in Winona where he learned to fly as a teenager. He flew with the Max Conrad Flying School during the 1930's and was a civilian flight instructor to the military at several army bases during World War II. He started his commercial airline career in 1942, and after 33 years of flying with Delta Airlines he retired in 1975. Upon retirement from Delta, he became a flight instructor at the Olive Branch Airport in Olive Branch, Mississippi for 20 years. During his flying career he amassed more than 39,000 flight hours. He received the honor of being flight instructor of the year for the Mid-South area. He married Shirley Louise Bell in June of 1945, and they were married for 64 years until her death in March of 2010. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Waldo and is survived by a sister, Mary Bredeson of Piqua, Ohio. He is also survived by a daughter, Diane Johnson of Germantown, Tennessee, a step- son, William Petty of Memphis, Tennessee and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edward's feelings about flying are best summed up by the following words of N. Robinson: "What is a pilot? Ask him. He will look at his runway, searching for words to explain it to you. The music of the propeller and the engine are but pieces of melody in the symphony that wells up and surges across the asphalt and gravel to him. The beauty of patchwork fields and dancing horizons are only faint shadows on the masterpiece across the canvas of his windshield. If you must ask a pilot why, then you will never understand, for he cannot give you an answer. It is an answer that is found in the soul. It is the same force that compels an artist or writer to struggle a lifetime to give meaningful expression to their feelings through their work, even when their work is not given recognition. A pilot cannot hope for recognition. No one will discover in years to come his perfect takeoff or flawless crosswind landing. They are temporary. Gone forever, once they are done, leaving behind only scattered dust that will settle. A pilot is a pilot because he must be. The spirit of a man is in his work. The spirit of a pilot is restless unless it is merged with the spirit of the wind; and together they are one." Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 18 at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, Tennessee with burial following the service. Shirley Waldo, 95, of Memphis, passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2010. She was an artist who had a natural talent for painting when she was very young. Later in life while living in Houston, TX, Shirley, began taking art lessons and enjoyed her painting for many years, selling some of her work and giving many pieces to lucky members of her family and friends. She particularly loved painting landscapes, orientals, and portraits. Shirley was preceded in death by a brother George Bell, and a sister Irma Rena. She leaves her husband, Ed Waldo of 64 years, a son Bill Petty, a step-daughter, Diane Johnson, five granddaughters, Tori Petty, Paige McKee, Glenda Milligan, Vicki Grant, and Lori Johnson, a grandson Chris Johnson, six great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. She also leaves a brother Bill Bell, a sister Frances Wellman, and many nieces and nephews who always thought aunt Shirley was fun to be with. She will be greatly missed......................

Charles Harold Quinn, age 91, of Denton, Texas passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2017. Charles was born in 1926 to Otis and Ada Cox. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 2 years and 9 months. Later, Charles became an pilot for Delta Airlines until his retirement.

 

To honor his life, a funeral service will be held at 12:30pm on Monday in the chapel at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home. The family will host a visitation on Sunday from noon to 3pm at the funeral home. He will be buried following the service in the Memorial Park. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.

News has reached us with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired C&S/DL pilot Captain George Maynard, age 89 and nearing his 90th birthday.  George is the father of Braniff/USAirways/AA pilot John E. Maynard and also the brother of retired Braniff pilot Captain Don Maynard.  Captain George Maynard joined Chicago & Southern 05-07-1951 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1987 based DFW.  

He is survived by his wife Olga.

Mary Louise Pickett von Zedtwitz, 95, of Kerrville, Texas, formerly of Anna, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015.

She was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Anna to Mary Frances and Claude Pickett. She was the middle of three children, having an older and younger brother, both of whom preceded her in death.

She grew up in Anna, and, when approximately 12 years old, moved with her family to Flint, Michigan, where her father worked in an auto factory to support the family. She worked during her years while in school as a cashier at the local movie house and theater, graduating at age 18 from Flint Central High School.

After high school, she worked as an office receptionist and secretary, dreaming about flying as a stewardess and traveling the country. At that time, to be a stewardess, the requirement was first to be 20 years of age and, second, a nurse, as most people got ill in the turbulence of early-aviation, low-level flying. Rules were subsequently changed, dropping the nurse qualification, and, when Mary Louise turned 20, she applied and was hired to fly as a stewardess for Pennsylvania Central Airlines, a forerunner to United Airlines. Several years later, she applied for and was hired by Chicago and Southern Airlines, which later merged with Delta Airlines. It was there that she met and subsequently married in New Orleans in 1945 to John von Zedtwitz, a pilot for Chicago and Southern Airlines. She was blessed with two children and raised them there.

In 2000, after 57 years in New Orleans and after her husband's death, she relocated to Gainesville, Florida, to the Village to enjoy a quiet, peaceful life making new friends and acquaintances. After 11 years in Florida, it was time to relocate and she moved to Kerrville, Texas, to be closer to and receive care from her daughter, Roxanne. She lived at Harper House and then at the Villagio until her passing. She was a lifelong member of Gentilly Presbyterian Church in New Orleans and a respected member of the early Delta Airlines family.

She was spirited as ever and never lost the opportunity to travel. Early on, while working as a stewardess, she met and had a chance to speak with top government officials, presidents, CEOs of large corporations, movie and film stars and high-ranking officers of the military. One that she remembers well was Eddie Rickenbacker, the world-famous aviation pioneer, and another was Medal of Honor winner Sgt. Jake Lindsey and his wife, Beverly during the war. "I shall never forget my interesting life as a stewardess, meeting and greeting so many celebrities and prominent people during those years," she said.

Mary Louise loved to visit family, friends and church members. She loved to play cards, board games or go bowling and dancing. Golf was a special event in her early married life. She traveled all over the world with her husband and enjoyed life immensely. The USA, Europe, Africa and Asia were places that she extensively visited. Her favorite destination, though, was Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Survivors include her daughter, Roxanne von Zedtwitz Case (Darrel) of Kerrville, Texas; son, Capt. John von Zedtwitz (Peggy) of Las Vegas; three grandchildren, Hans von Zedtwitz, Christina von Zedtwitz, Leigh (Ryan) and Elizabeth von Zedtwitz Smith (Mathew); and two great-grandchildren, Collin Hans Smith and Logan Pierce Leigh.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, John von Zedtwitz in October, 1996.

Mary Louise was a unique individual, friend, sister, daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be truly missed by all and returns to Anna to be placed next to her mother, father and husband in Anna City Cemetery.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in Anna City Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Whitley officiating. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Joseph H. STEWART passed away peacefully at home Friday evening August 21, 2015, age 91. Born in Olathe, KS to Harry Stewart and Dorothy Nelson on February 21, 1924. He graduated from Naval Flight Training at Corpus Christi, TX in 1944. He flew the Grumman F6F Hellcat out of Melbourne, FL. Due to injuries he did not serve in WWII. In 1946 at Savannah, GA he join the Merchant Marines. After returning home to Olathe he met Barbara Sheets whom he married in 1950 before being commissioned aboard the Essex-class aircraft carrier "USS Boxer" with the flight squadron "The Bitter Birds". He flew a Vought F4U-1 Corsair as a Lt. Senior Grade during the Korean War. In 1953 he joined Chicago & Southern Airlines as a commercial pilot before it merged with Delta Airlines. He flew copilot on Douglas DC-3s, continuing on flying for Delta as a First Officer on DC-6s and DC-7s. He was furloughed in 1954 from Delta. Moving to Miami the same year he joined National Airlines where he achieved Captain status at age 35 flying Convair-340 and 440s out of the NYC base in 1959. Over the years he flew many variety of aircraft including the Lockheed Electra and Boeing 727. He ended the list qualifying as Captain on the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 in 1976 while based in Miami, FL. He remained in Miami with National Airlines until it merged with Pan American Airlines where he continued flying DC-10s as Captain. In 1984 he retired from PANAM. His wife predeceased him in 1995. Later moving to Southwest Ranches, FL he married Laura Driskell in 2005. After retirement he continued his life-long hobby of rodeo tie-down calf roping, acquiring his last cowpony at age 85. He is survived by his wife Laura, his daughter Marsha Brentlinger, his sons Randy and Joel Stewart, their spouses, children, and grandchild, plus his sister Jean Thompson, and her family. His ashes will be inurned in Arlington National Cemetery, VA in the spring of 2016.

Leonard Graham Sandridge (Sandy)

On Weds, Dec 3, 2014, Sandy, as he was affectionately known by his friends, died peacefully in Roanoke with his loving wife of 22 years, Mildred Townsend Sandridge, by his side. Sandy was born Feb 15, 1921. Sandy, or Graham, but rarely Leonard, Sandridge was born in Roanoke where he returned in 1992 after having lived in New Orleans from 1947 after serving in WWII in the Pacific for two years as a pilot with the Army Air Corps. He flew with Delta Airlines until forced to retire, kicking and screaming, in 1981 when he turned 60. In his retirement, he volunteered as a pilot for the humanitarian organization Project Orbis for five years. Orbis, an organization supporting an eye surgical air theatre provided treatment across the globe. He remained active in aviation through his late 70's flying single engine airplanes with his daughter, Dr. Amy Leona Sandridge, of Metairie, who survives him. Sandy who was predeceased by his son Roger in 2001 was survived by Amy's daughters Michael Lucinda Jane and Isis Magdalena Greer and his granddaughters, Dr. Layne Sandridge of Phoenix, Ariz and Dr. Lindsay Sandridge Domiano of Hammond, daughters of Roger and Mrs. Roger (Barbara) Sandridge of Hammond. The family will have a memorial honoring the life of Sandy at a later date.

On Wednesday, December 3, 2014, Leonard Graham Sandridge at the age of 93 took his final flight from home in Blue Ridge, VA in the care of his loving wife of 22 years, Mildred Townsend Sandridge. He was known as “Sandy” by many of his aviation friends. He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. during WW II in the South Pacific for two years. Following this, he had a 30-year career as a pilot for Delta Airlines. As a child on the early Roanoke airport, Graham spent time washing planes for local pilots in hopes of hitching a ride. He was always known for his humor and wit. He was member of the Quiet Birdmen and Delta Golden Wings. Following his retirement from Delta, he served as a volunteer pilot for a humanitarian organization, Project Orvis. The airplane was outfitted as a surgical theatre for eye surgery performed in undeveloped countries all over the world, updating the education of the local eye surgeons and restoring vision to many patients. Graham was predeceased by his son, Roger Steven Sandridge, his parents, Leonard Lance Sandridge and Blanche Campbell Sandridge. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Amy Leona Sandridge of Metari, LA and her daughters, Michael and Isis Greer. Also his granddaughters, Layne Sandridge of Phoenix, AZ and Lindsay Sandridge Domiano of Hammond, LA, daughters of Roger Sandridge. Herbert Don Hull, age 92 of Gainesville, passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.

Word has been received with the passing of C&S/DL retired pilot Captain Loyd J. Cox, age 90.  Captain Cox joined Chicago & Southern 03-06-1953, just prior to the C&S/DL merger.  Captain Cox was based Chicago for most of his career and transferred to the ATL base in 1975.

Mr. Loyd Junior Cox, 90, of Williamson, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014. He had been in declining health for many months. He was born in Carterville, Illinois, March 16, 1924 to the late Loyd and Velma Cox. He was also preceded in death by his sister, LaVeeta Thompson.

 

After graduating high school he entered the US Army in 1943 and trained as a tank commander with the Fourth Armored Division. This Division, part of General Patton's Third Army, spear-headed the attack on Bastogne, Belgium during the Christmas holidays of 1944. This attack resulted in some of the worst fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. Marching through deep snow and extreme cold temperatures, units of the Fourth Armored Division covered 150 miles in nineteen hours to beat back the German drive toward Antwerp and relieve the besieged 101st Airborne Division, trapped in Bastogne. For their actions the Fourth Armored Division received a Presidential Citation for extraordinary accomplishment against enemy forces. A few weeks later Sergeant Cox was severely wounded by a German mortar shell while leading his squad against a German counter attack near Bastogne. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

 

He returned to the states and was sent to Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battlecreek, Michigan where he was cared for by Second Lieutenant Beulah Casey from Ramsey, Illinois. They fell in love and a year later were married and started a family.

 

Loyd began aviation training after World War II, earning his aircraft mechanic licenses and flight instructor rating. In 1953 he was hired by Chicago and Southern Airlines which shortly thereafter merged with Delta Airlines. He was based in Chicago most of his career, which included several years as an instructor pilot. In 1975 Loyd transferred to the Atlanta crew base and his family moved to Williamson in December of that year. He retired in 1980 to enjoy a variety of hobbies and activities with his family.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Beulah; his daughter Gail Godley and her husband Vincent of Williamson; two sons, Randy Cox and his wife Mary of Senoia, and Keith Cox and his wife Denise of Griffin; brother Tom Cox and his wife Betty of Belleville, Illinois; sister Donna Crain of Herrin, Illinois; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation for Mr. Cox will be Friday evening, May 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 24 in the Westwood Memorial Gardens on Everee Inn Road, Griffin. Dr. Ed Hoard will officiate.
