Obituary :

James H. Suckow, 84, of Naples, passed away suddenly at home on April 25, 2026.

He is survived by his wife, Jan, his daughter, Kelly, and his two grandchildren, Avery and Justin of Atlanta. Also, his brother, Paul Suckow and his wife, Phyllis are part-time residents of Naples and their son, Morgan and his husband, Mark who are residents of New York City.

Born on March 10, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois to Mae S. Suckow and Herbert W. Suckow, the family moved to the suburb of Elmhurst when Jim was in grade school. He graduated from York High School in 1960, and went on to the University of Missouri where he met his wife, Jan. They married shortly after graduation in 1964.

Having been in Navy ROTC, he reported directly to flight school in Pensacola, Florida for training. Jim flew many missions in Vietnam and at the end of his naval career was qualified in seven different aircraft at the same time. The planes ranged from the four-engined turboprop C-130 transports to the A-4 fighter jets.

The team competed in the softball World Series in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He also volunteered to sit on our city’s firefighter pension board, assisting with asset growth and stabilization after the 2008 financial crisis had decimated the fund.

A proud resident of Naples for 50 years, he always remarked how fortunate he felt to have enjoyed this beautiful town as his home.

A true trailblazer, Sandy broke significant barriers for women in aviation. She became Northwest Airlines’ first female Captain Instructor/Check Pilot in 1992 and later selected as the first female amongst all the major U.S. passenger carrying airlines as a Fleet Check Captain in 1994 and then named Assistant Chief Pilot – Flight Manager. She was the first female to hold this position at NWA, or at any other major U.S. Airline.

She was a founding board member of Women in Aviation, International (WAI) and played a key role in establishing its Endowment Fund, helping create lasting scholarship and educational opportunities. Her contributions earned widespread recognition. Sandy received the Northwest Airlines Humanitarian Award, the Women in Aviation International “Bruce Baty Volunteer of the Year Award” (twice), the WAI Founders Award, and Texas Woman’s University’s Distinguished Alumna Award. She was inducted twice into the Women in Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame and honored for her lifelong commitment to advancing women in aviation.

February 8, 1948 - April 25, 2026

Suzanne writes:  I am sending the sad news of the passing of Captain Sandy Anderson, who passed away today, April 25, 2026.

Sandy was the second female pilot hired at Northwest Airlines 10-15-1979 and she retired as a Boeing 747 Captain.

Sandy was very active in helping others to achieve their aviation goals. She was a member of The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots ( https://www.ninety-nines.org ), The International Society of Women Airline Pilots ( isa21.org ), and Women in Aviation ( https://www.wai.org/ ) where she was instrumental in establishing the endowment fund for that organization.  Should you choose to send a memorial donation in Sandy’s memory, she would have been honored to be remembered were you to keep in mind these organizations especially the Endowment Fund for Women in Aviation.

Sandy was a talented, gifted person in so many different areas: artistically, athletically, musically, in addition to her aviation skills.

She was always willing to serve and lend a helping hand where needed.

Sandy has suffered from dementia for the past five years and has been residing at The Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care in Gun Barrel City, TX 75156. She has been in the care of her younger sister, Sharla Johnson.

Condolences and additional information can be shared with Sharla at 350 Overlook Trail, Gun Barrel City, TX 75156, voicemail or text to (214) 801-8588.

 Thank you,

Suzanne Skeeters

Facebook : A tribute to Captain Sandy L. Anderson, Northwest Airlines Ret.

Sandy passed away yesterday and I had news early on and took some time to process it. Sandy was one of my distant role models. I first met her in 1991 when I was then known as Janet Andersen. I remembered her name because it was so close to mine. She was ironically the Captain on the Boeing 727 taking me from DTW to MCO where I was receiving a certificate for winning the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship from The Ninety-Nines.

I took it as a great sign and very good omen that I had a woman airline Captain flying me to the Woman Pilot Conference! I was able to sit in the cockpit of the 727. The pilots had been paid and that was back in the day the checks were printed and left in the mailboxes at work. So the First Officer and Flight Engineer were discussing their paychecks enroute and told me, “Go on, Janet, ask Sandy how much her pay check is…” Besides the huge paycheck, I was very happy to see Sandy was short like me.

Because WAI (women in aviation) was a budding organization, and one which Sandy supported since the beginning (I joined in 1995 even though I really couldn’t afford the dues and became member number 557) I was able to see Sandy become a check airman and then switch to the 747 and become a check airman there. In 2014 I spent time with her and Beverly Bass when I was invited to go see the ISA+21 archives at TWU (Texas Woman’s University). Over the years, whenever I saw Sandy at a WAI conference I always told her she was a role model to me. She was always a bit embarrassed and I always had to tell her the story of the jumpseat on the NWA 727. When I heard she had dementia and was asked to take over her position in ISA as the archivist, I was not surprised; her memory loss seemed to me to be going on for years, but I never minded telling her the story of how we met.

Her jumpseat was one of the first ever I was allowed to take. I was flying for an FAR 121 carrier and had specific authorization to be on the flight deck at Northwest Airlines. I will never forget Sandy and my inspirational flight with her in command. RIP Sandy. I was glad I met you.

Jim Kary Obituary

Jim Kary, 84, of Killdeer, ND, Prior Lake, MN, and Harrisburg, NC, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026. Born on January 16, 1942, in Killdeer, Dunn County, ND, Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Diane Kary; his daughter Suzy Whitt, her husband Michael, and his grandchildren Zoe and Sadie of NC; his son Brian Kary, his wife Beth, and his grandchildren Emelia and Jakob of MN. He is also survived by his dear sisters: Janice Miller and husband Don; Sharon Nelson; Doreen Strom and husband Glenn; Shirley Ortman and husband Jim; Diane Fischer and husband Tom; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved grandson Carter who we know he’s now driving tractors with in heaven.

Jim was raised on his family homestead in Killdeer, ND, where endless experiences and stories of old west farm life easily equaled those in Little House on the Prairie. After marrying Diane in 1963, he graduated from Dickinson State College then joined the U.S. Navy in 1964, serving as an aviator and flight instructor with a tour in Vietnam in 1966 where he flew anti-submarine patrol in the P-3 over the Gulf of Tonkin. Jim continued flying the P-3 in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Commander in 1985. He lived for many years in Apple Valley and Prior Lake, MN working as a pilot for Northwest Airlines until 2002. Jim enjoyed a long retirement, spending his days mowing fields, tending his horses, and driving tractors with his grandkids on his hobby farm. Jim easily shined his brightest as a pilot and grandpa. He spent his last five years being cared for in NC.

Jim will be dearly missed but we’re grateful for his long life and finding peace after dementia. The family will have a private memorial in the future. In memorium and in lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

    Obituary for Deward Kendall Hopkins

Kendall Hopkins, age 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 1, 2026, in St. George, Utah.

Kendall was kind, generous, and extraordinarily funny — always ready for adventure. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, he taught those around him to stay curious, lead with integrity, and show up for the people who need you. He didn’t just teach these values—he lived them every day.

Fearless in spirit, Kendall chased adventure with enthusiasm. A true daredevil, he loved extreme experiences and embraced life with energy and joy. He was endlessly creative — a published writer, avid photographer, and brilliant artist whose imagination never slowed down. He loved exploring new places, trying new things, and sharing laughter with friends.

Of all his roles, being a husband, father, and grandfather meant the most. He was a loyal friend, bringing warmth, humor, and steady support to everyone fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, integrity, humor, and generosity are the legacy he leaves behind.

At his request, we share his words:
“It has been a great journey, and I love all of you who have shared that journey with me.”

Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff, nurses, and CNAs at the Southern Utah Veterans Home and to Dixie Hospice. Their exceptional care, kindness, and genuine friendship meant so much to Kendall and our family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kendall’s name to the Utah Nurse Scholarship for Veteran Care, 1600 North 200 East, Ivins, Utah 84738, attention Tony Moore.

John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as both an instructor pilot in the T-38 and a member of the 96th Test Wing at Eglin Airforce Base. "I cannot promise you it will be perfect, but I promise it will be an adventure. Some days we will be drinking straight from a water hose, and some days we will be drinking champagne straight out of the bottle."

The family of Edwin Robbins "Rory" DuPont, Jr. is deeply saddened to announce his passing on April 13, 2026. Rory was born on February 14th, 1977, in Jacksonville, Florida to Edwin R. DuPont, Sr. and Blanche Burt DuPont. Rory is a 3rd generation Naval Aviator. He met his wife of almost 25 years at the University of Florida in 1997 and they married on December 29, 2001. Rory received his commission as an officer in 2000 and continued to serve until he passed away as a Captain in the Naval Reserve. A US Naval Aviator, Fighter Pilot, and graduate of TOPGUN, Rory flew the F/A-18, F-5, and T-45 as an instructor pilot over multiple combat tours and aircraft carrier deployments. In 2012, he and his family moved to Bogotá, Colombia for a short time to work for the American Embassy in Diplomatic Affairs. In 2013, in order to focus more on family, Rory joined the Naval Reserve and began work as a performance consultant & business development lead for Latin America at Check-6 Int'l, Inc. He also flew for Delta Air Lines as an international Airbus 350 pilot and supported the family business as chief pilot of Rocky Top Aviation, LLC flight school in Knoxville, TN.

In addition to his extensive career ambitions, Rory was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Troops of St. George, and a Captain in Fraternus. His work with Delta allowed him to travel all over the world, often with his family in tow, and participate in the international community of the faithful, observing firsthand their beautiful works. Despite a wide breadth of commitments and activities, Rory was passionate about putting his faith at the forefront of all that he did both individually and with his family. He will always be remembered for his never ending zest for squeezing the life out of life every single day and quick, witty sense of humor. When faced with difficulty or adversity, he quickly quipped his motto, "Just another adventure!" which immediately became his and Carolina's family motto. A true and proudly devoted family man, Rory deeply loved and lived for his family. Some of his favorite family activities were traveling, hiking the Smokies, flying, hunting, camping, fishing, and cooking.

Bruce Elbert Despain obituary:

Bruce Elbert Despain was born on May 3, 1930, and passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, just shy of his 96th birthday. His beautiful wife, Beverly, and sweet granddaughter, Chelsea, have been waiting on the other side for his arrival.

Bruce was raised at the family home in the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon by his parents, Elbert George Despain and Miriam Charlotte Hawkins Despain. He talked often about his years in the canyons, farming, and riding horses. His grandfather, LE Despain, owned an ore hauling business, which Bruce’s father, Elbert, took over. Elbert taught many of his sons to drive the trucks at a very young age by holding fingers out the window to tell them what gear to shift into!

Bruce loved to ski in his Little Cottonwood mountains and had the opportunity to ski with some of the greats, including Alf Engen, who set several ski jumping world records in the 1930s and established a ski school at the Alta ski resort. Alf was also a pioneer of powder skiing.

As a young man, Bruce won a flying lesson on a radio show, and that was it! His love of flying was born. While attending the University of Utah, he was enrolled in the Air Force ROTC. He then entered active duty with the Air Force just prior to the end of the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Captain. His call sign was “Phantom”, a nickname that continued his whole life. He served active duty as a pilot and as a reserve as well. Bruce was also a veteran of the Korean War. After his service, he started his career with Western Airlines, which later became Delta Air Lines, and retired in 1990 after 33 years of service. Both of his sons followed in his footsteps and became airline pilots.

Bruce met his spouse, Beverly, through his sister-in-law, who thought they’d have a lot in common, since she was a stewardess for United Airlines. That successful lineup led to a wedding in the Salt Lake Temple on November 19, 1959. Beverly and Bruce were companions for 52 years until Beverly passed away on January 27, 2012.

Their very first home was in Cottonwood Heights on Catalina Dr. The family had many happy memories in the five years they lived there. Bruce was notorious for antics involving the blowing up of the neighbors’ garbage cans with flair and creativity accompanied by his best friend and partner in crime, Carl Church. All in fun! They moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1968, where they built another home on hole 1 of a beautiful golf course. The whole family loved it there, but Bruce could never let go of his love for the mountains. They moved back to Utah 3 years later. It took over a year to build the Willow Creek home at the top of Bridger Boulevard, where many a grand party, backyard barbecues, weddings, social gatherings, festive holidays, and volleyball or badminton in the driveway were always happening. Beverly and Bruce’s final home was in the Steeplechase neighborhood in Draper, Utah.

Bruce was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. As the years went on, he became the man who would rather take pictures and make friends with the fish. On numerous trips down the Green River, he would stop at a place he called “The Lunch Counter.” His fish friends would recognize his kick boat and come swimming for treats and belly rubs! There are pictures to prove the lasting relationships he formed with his “fin” friends! Bruce taught his sons and grandsons the art of fly fishing and took his kids fishing in Alaska. They all have many fond fishing memories with dad and grandpa.

With all the airline passes available to the family, they were able to take many wonderful vacations to Germany, Austria, Canada, Alaska, many states, and multiple visits to California and Hawaii.

Bruce had many other talents. He used his artist skills to paint his beloved Cottonwood Canyons. He was a great boatman and took family and friends on many trips. On one trip to Lake Powell with Bev’s sister Frankie and her family, the boat was having mechanical problems. The group was stuck on the boat ramp for several hours, and they became increasingly hungry. Bev jumped up and made sandwiches. From then on, in any extreme circumstances, the family joke was to “just make sandwiches!”

Brigette learned to finish house construction from her father. He really was a great teacher and shared his skills generously.

Bruce loved his kids and extended family and made up detailed names for them. His oldest son Brett was affectionately named “kid.” His daughter Brigette was “dolly,” and Brandt was originally nicknamed “buzzard” due to his initial grumpiness as a young child. Many family members remember their “Bruce-given” name with love and appreciation for his creativity!

He taught his children shooting skills, and all three of them competed in shooting competitions. Brett has won many awards and still competes in trapshooting.

Bruce was a tough, strict military man, with a warm and fuzzy interior and a heart full of love.

He is survived by his brothers Richard (Marilyn) & Michael (Lynn) Despain. Son, Brett Despain (Andrea), daughter, Brigette Nielsen, son, Brandt Despain (TuRea). Grandchildren, Chase Harrison (Mikah), Chad Harrison, Alexis Despain (Bret), Niki Hansen (Alex), Rachel Ferguson (Colton), Kylee Despain (Austin), Alex and Elyse Despain. Great-grandchildren Railee, Chelsea, Cade, Skylar, Maverick, Rosie, Charlotte, Olivia, and our newest lil’ man, Bennett. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Gail (Beverly), wife Beverly, granddaughter Chelsea Ann, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on April 25, 2026, at 2:00 at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery 3115 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
