Obituary  :  Capt. Raymond C. Burnett

Captain Raymond Charlton Burnett, age 81 of Lutz, Florida passed away peacefully on November 15, 2020 surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 24, 1939 in Nashville, Tennessee Raymond graduated from Central High school in Nashville. He continued his education at Middle Tennessee State University and completed his aviation training in the Air National Guard. He was hired as a pilot for Delta Airlines in 1965. He would serve with distinction for 34 years until his retirement in 1999 as an International Captain flying the Boeing 777. Raymond was not the type of person to rest on his laurels. In 1975 he moved his family from Dallas, Texas to a farm in Ocala, Florida to start a new challenge. Raymond would over the next 25 years become a prominent Thoroughbred breeder who also served on the Board of Directors of the Ocala Breeders Sales Company during its foundation years. He would eventually start a racing stable running throughout the East Coast and Florida. After retiring in 1999 he bought a small farm outside of Tampa, Florida to be close to his children. Retirement for Raymond wasn’t laying on a beach or playing golf, but it gave him the opportunity to return to his passion, his Corvettes. Over the 21 years since retiring from Delta, Raymond would become a National Corvette Restoration Society Master Judge and complete numerous award-winning classic corvette restorations. The pride and joy of his restorations was his rare 1957 “Fuel-Injected” Corvette which was a NCRS Top Flight and Duntov Award-Winning car. His last classic car restoration was a true labor of love as he lovingly restored a 1975 Bronco for his daughter Rebecca.

While Raymond was a talented and accomplished individual, his greatest love was his family. Every sacrifice he made was for the benefit of his children. They always knew they could count on Dad. He always gave generously with his time to help his friends and family. Raymond never let anyone down and was always there when you needed him. He will forever be loved and missed by his family and friends.

Raymond is survived by his son Benjamin Burnett and daughter Rebecca Burnett, his former wife Dianne Burnett, his sisters Evie Burnett Moore and Lucy Burnett DePriest, and his brother John Burnett, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond was predeceased by his parents Aaron and Myriam Jones Burnett, father and mother-in-law Alfred and Lorraine Hoehn, brother’s Nathan Burnett, Richard Burnett, Robert Burnett and his beloved beagle Holly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Raymond’s memory to The National Corvette Museum or the Beagle Freedom Project.

Cherokee County names Airport Authority room after late visionary

Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The: Web Edition Articles (GA) - Monday, July 19, 2021

Family, friends and colleagues of the late Don Stevens gathered recently to honor the man who dedicated a great deal of time and resources to make the Cherokee County Regional Airport what it is today, according to a press release.

On July 12, the Cherokee County Airport Authority hosted a dedication ceremony to honor the former Chairman, who passed away in January. Roughly 50 people attended the ceremony including State Rep. Charlice Byrd who presented a copy of a resolution she sponsored honoring Stevens' in the Georgia House of Representatives to his widow Lila Stevens, and Airport Authority Board Chairman Steve Mammen dedicated the airport's executive conference room to be renamed in Steven's honor.

Stevens, a retired Delta Airlines pilot, served on the Cherokee County Airport Authority for more than 20 years. During his tenure with the Airport Authority, he was instrumental in the development of the Airport Area Master Plan which brought significant expansion in the capabilities of the airport, including extending the runway to 6,000 feet, adding more hangar space and a new terminal building.

Stevens additionally served as chairman of the Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority, as board chairman for the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in 1999 and was a volunteer firefighter. He is credited in helping to create the DUI Court, and in 2004, he was named First Citizen of Cherokee County by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.

Airport Authority leader, well known volunteer Don Stevens dies

Airport Authority leader, well known volunteer Don Stevens dies

Cherokee Tribune (Canton, GA) - Wednesday, January 27, 2021

Longtime community leader and volunteer Don Stevens, 76, died Wednesday after a short illness. Friends remembered him as someone who played an outsized role in shaping modern Cherokee County.

A retired Delta Airlines pilot, Stevens played a significant part in preparing the community for the rapid it has seen in recent decades, as well as giving back in volunteer roles.

"You hear that expression, 'a man for his time.' Well, Don Stevens was a man for Cherokee County's time, as it made the transition from rural to metropolitan," said Dennis Burnette, who served as president of Cherokee Bank when Stevens was chairman of the board. "There are many things in Cherokee County that would not have gotten done — or not done as well — without Don's leadership."

In addition to serving in leadership at Cherokee Bank at its founding in 1999 and beyond, Stevens also partnered with the late Dwight Terry in forming T&S Construction and also worked in real estate. It was in public service and volunteer leadership roles where Stevens had his biggest impact, friends said Wednesday.

Stevens served on the Cherokee County Airport Authority for more than 20 years, leading its board as chairman.

"He was a driver for the community," said John Marinko, who has served on the Airport Authority for about 15 years. "He made sure the airport was the front door for businesses looking at Cherokee County."

During his tenure with the Airport Authority, the runway was lengthened from 3,400 feet to 5,000 feet to accommodate business jets, along with other improvements. At the time of his death, a project was underway to expand the runway again to allow for jets to carry large enough fuel loads to fly across the U.S. from the Cherokee County Regional Airport.

"He went to Washington to meet with people from the FAA to get funding to help lengthen the runway," Burnette said. "That's just one of the contributions Don made to the good lives we live in Cherokee County."

Stevens served as chairman of the Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority. He was a volunteer firefighter. He and his wife Lila started the Cherokee Thanksgiving program at Canton First United Methodist Church, which has served thousands of holiday meals to people in need. He was a leader in creating the DUI Court, for which he was honored by the Blue Ridge Bar Association. Stevens served as board chairman for the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in 1999 and in 2004 was honored by that organization as First Citizen of Cherokee County.

"I'm tiptoeing on the clouds," Stevens said after receiving the First Citizen award. "I'm still in shock. I've never had something affect me quite the way this has. I'm very, very flattered, humbled and grateful, especially when I go back and look at the list of previous winners. That's quite a club they've dropped me into. I'm just so, so flattered that I'm associated with folks in that group."

Enthusiasm, hard work and a positive attitude were all hallmarks of Stevens, according to his friends. Burnette and Marinko credit those qualities with helping save the life of Lila Stevens after she was diagnosed with State IV pancreatic cancer, a disease with a very high mortality rate.

Family was important to Stevens, Marinko said. Don Stevens and his son Keith Stevens owned a classic Cessna airplane. They worked on it together, and flew it to air shows where it won awards.

While Stevens continued to be a leader as Airport Authority chairman, and leaves a long list of accomplishments, his personal attributes will long be remembered, friends said Wednesday.

"I honestly don't think Don Stevens ever met a stranger," Chamber President Pam Carnes said Wednesday. "No matter how your day was going, he was sure to make it better since he was never at a loss for words or without a story or joke to share!"

Marinko said Stevens showed respect to everyone and was a person who could bring sides together during a conflict.

"He was a good guy," Marinko said. "It's just that simple."

Obituary  :  Roger Brian Nash

Nash, U.S. Air Force, (Ret.)

COL ROGER BRIAN NASH, U.S. AIR FORCE, (RET.)

March 31, 1950 January 21, 2021

Colonel Roger Brian Nash, USAF, (Ret.) of Monument, Colorado flew west with the angels on January 21, 2021 at the age of 70. After decades of worldwide military assignments and travel, he died near his hometown, completing the circle of his life.

Roger was born on March 31, 1950 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Reola Nash and the late William Nash. He was the second son, being eleven months younger than his brother, Kenny, with whom he always enjoyed competing.

Growing up in Beaver, he was a star basketball and football player (with the preserved film footage to prove it) and graduated as Valedictorian of Beaver High School in 1968. He earned Congressional appointments to both the Naval Academy and the United States Air Force Academy and wisely chose to pursue his future at the latter. Due to the rigorous discipline, high standards of integrity, and the exceptional caliber of his fellow cadets, his time at the Academy had a profound impact on the rest of his life. He graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

He was selected for pilot training in the T-38 at Columbus AFB, Mississippi. His first tactical assignment, after earning his wings, was as a FAC in the OV-10 Bronco at Nakon Phanom AB, Thailand. Returning stateside, he checked out in the A-7 and was assigned to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

In 1976, he married up, when Patricia Schnell agreed to be his lifelong wingman. In 1977, he was chosen as part of the first cadre of F-15's assigned to Europe. He became part of the legendary 53rd NATO Tiger squadron at Bitburg AB, Germany. He was fortunate to fly this remarkable aircraft for most of the remainder of his twenty-four year career. He was the Fighter Weapons Officer in the 71st TFS, and later a Standardization and Evaluation flight examiner at Langley AFB, Virginia. He attended Air Command and Staff College, Army Command and General Staff College, National Security management, and Air War College. He also earned his master's degree in International Relations. The highlight of his military career was being appointed as the F-15 Division Commander of the Fighter Weapon School at Nellis AFB. He spent two years as the Deputy Director of the Office of Military Cooperation at the American Embassy in Kuwait immediately following the first Gulf War and was then the Chief of Safety at Ramstein AB. He retired from this assignment in 1996, and moved to Monument, Colorado to begin the next phase of his life.

In the course of his Air Force career he earned many awards and decorations for his exemplary service. They include but are not limited to: the Legion of Merit, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the South-West Asia Service Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

Roger continued flying as a pilot for Delta Airlines. During his seventeen year career he trained and qualified as a Federal Flight Deck Officer, continuing to provide safety and security for his fellow citizens and passengers, post 9-11. For this service, he received a letter of commendation from President Barack Obama.

After his second retirement, Roger spent his time with his family and many friends. He loved fishing and playing golf (three certified and soberly witnessed Holes in One). He worked to preserve and expand the quail population in the Panhandle of Oklahoma and hunted there frequently. He traveled extensively with his wife and children, experiencing the wonder of seeing life and the world through the eyes of his adoring grandchildren.

Roger is preceded in death by his father, William E. Nash; and his father-in-law, Louis Schnell.

He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Patricia; his daughter, Anna and husband, Richard Friedberg of Charleston, South Carolina; his son, Peter and wife, Mary of Monument, Colorado; the two most perfect grandchildren ever created, Micah and Ara Friedberg; his mother, Reola Nash of Phoenix, Arizona; his brother, Ken Nash and wife, Rhonda of Valley Mills, Texas; and his beloved hunting dogs, Mo and Guy, all of whom are inconsolable in their grief for the loss of The Colonel.

Roger was blessed throughout his life to be associated with the finest people in the world, the men and women who serve to guard and defend this great country he loved so much. He will be laid to rest among these heroes in the sacred ground of the United States Air Force Academy on January 29, 2021. The Graveside Service will be officiated by the Reverend Bob Kaylor of TriLakes United Methodist Church of Monument.

Graveside Service, 1:00PM, Friday, January 29, 2021, United States Air Force Academy Cemetery, 2168 Field House Drive, Air Force Academy, Colorado 80840.

The second of four sons, Jim was raised on a family farm in Spring Valley, Alabama. Jim attended Spring Valley schools and graduated from Colbert County High School in 1957.

Jim completed his freshman year at the University of North Alabama, then transferred to Auburn University. While at Auburn, Jim earned his private pilot's license. Jim was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and graduated from Auburn with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering degree in December 1960.

In 1961, Jim began a career as an aeronautical engineer at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Through NASA, he also continued advanced studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1962, Jim worked as an aerospace technologist for Flight Operations and was an integral part of the engineering team for re-entry and recovery systems for the Gemini project.

In 1966, Jim began a new career as a pilot for Delta Airlines, based first in Houston and later in Miami, Chicago, Boston, Salt Lake City and New York. During his last decade with Delta, Jim flew internationally to Europe, India, the Middle East and Russia. Jim was an avid skier and competed with the Delta Ski Team. Jim retired from Delta as a Senior Captain in 1998.

Jim was passionate about sailing. While based in Miami, Jim began restoration on "Pandora," a 2-masted square-rigged schooner that he salvaged from the Miami River. When Jim told a sailing friend that his dream was to do a full restoration on Pandora, his friend said, "Then you need to go to Camden, Maine." So in 1976, Jim set sail up the Eastern Seaboard to Camden, ME. One of the proudest days of his life was July 4, 1976, when Jim, accompanied by his daughter, Jan and a crew of friends, sailed Pandora into New York Harbor as a participant in the Op Sail '76 Tail Ship parade celebrating the U.S. Bicentennial. After Op Sail '76, Jim sailed from New York City up the New England Coast to Camden. Jim's daughter recalls that when Jim sailed into Camden he had a smile on his face that told her he was "home!" Jim set up his Pandora restoration project at the head of the harbor where he resided and settled into Camden life.

In 1982, Jim purchased the Young homestead at Youngtown Corner in Lincolnville, ME, where he restored the 1810 farmhouse and opened the Youngtown Inn. Jim developed the property of the homestead into an airstrip and farm, which was known as "Runway Ranch." In 1984, Jim and a dear friend completed construction of a Rutan Long EZ experimental aircraft. He flew many trips in the Long EZ across the U.S. to Canada and the Bahamas. One of Jim's fortes was land development. After retirement from Delta in 1998, Jim owned and operated Crossroads Construction, an excavation company, and completed many construction projects in the Lincolnville area.

In 1985, Jim met his wife, Holly Montgomery. They designed and built a timber frame home on Lake Megunticook where they have spent their married life along with their Australian Shepherds. Jim had an Australian Shepherd continuously by his side for the past four decades: Big Raffle, Little Raffle and Tux.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Wallace and Mabel Rutland, and his brother, Kenneth Donald Rutland. Surviving are his wife, Holly Montgomery Rutland; his daughter, Jan Rutland Sheehy and her husband, Daniel; three grandchildren, Jason Daniel Sheehy, Stephen Benjamin Sheehy and Jillian Sheehy Allen; brothers, John Wallace Rutland, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, Glen Davis Rutland and his wife, Sara; mother-in-law, Ann Montgomery; and sister-in-law, Lee Montgomery and her husband, John.

Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain Street, Camden, ME.

Obituary :  William "Bill" Danaher

William "Bill" Danaher was born April 16, 1934 in Torrington, Connecticut. He was the second son of Dr. Thomas and Helen Danaher, both of Thomaston, Connecticut.

Bill and his brother, Thomas, or "Tom," were the sons of a prominent surgeon in a small manufacturing town. Tom followed in his father's footsteps and became a surgeon. Bill's journey was not so straightforward, primarily due to his alcoholism, which began to surface in college. He attended the College of the Holy Cross for three years until, precipitated by disciplinary and academic issues, he withdrew to enlist in the Air Force.

Fortunate all his life, he was accepted into flight school even though he did not have the prerequisite bachelor's degree. After graduation, he was assigned to the Military Air Transport Service. When his ranking officers noticed his organizational abilities and energy, he was posted as a Maintenance Officer. This led to an assignment with The Strategic Air Command to Morocco, a critical post during the Cold War. His command of French provided entry and access to fellow officers in the Royal Moroccan Air Force. The friendships he made, and the advantages these provided in a "neutral country" still receiving military aid and personnel from the Soviet Union, were one of the highlights of his military career. The aptitude for cross-cultural communication and fluency he gained there served him well the rest of his life.

However, during this time, the alcoholism that cut short his college career progressed, and he elected to be discharged from the Air Force to avoid further disciplinary charges. For the same reason, his first marriage, through which he was blessed with two daughters, Dorothy and Joanne, ended in divorce. While in the midst of being discharged and divorced, he began to read Alcoholics Anonymous, otherwise known as the "Big Book," written by Bill Wilson. This led him to the fellowship formed by the author, which provided him with the support and nurture he needed to obtain sobriety, which began on New Year's Day, 1964.

Intent on making amends, he returned to his hometown. He rekindled a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jeanne Zoli, who was the love of his life. They were wed by a justice of the peace on February 15, 1965 and later married in the Roman Catholic Church on February 13, 1979. Bill adopted Jeanne's son from her previous marriage, John, and together they had another son, also named William ("Bill"). Through Jeanne's undying encouragement and loving support, Bill returned to the College of the Holy Cross, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1966.

During this time, he made ends meet by selling small airplanes and giving flying lessons to the teaching clergy of his college. Degree in hand, he was hired by Northeast Airlines. Northeast was acquired by Delta Airlines in 1972, which led to a fulfilling and successful career lasting 32 years. Bill flew all of the aircraft in the Delta fleet and on most of its national and international routes. It is impossible to overstate the joy he experienced in being an airline pilot. He loved every aspect of his career. He conscientiously stayed physically fit, constantly worked to perfect his knowledge and skills, and delighted in traveling the globe. He was an avid gun collector and hunter of fowl, small game, and big game. He was also an expert horseback rider, and he took many trips to Ireland to fox hunt - a pastime more akin to the modern steeplechase than to its much tamer iteration in the United States. His greatest source of spiritual strength and comfort was his membership in Alcoholics Anonymous. He regularly attended three meetings a week, no matter where he was, and this fellowship brought him into contact with people from all walks of life all over the world. He was actively involved in helping others find treatment and sobriety. He sponsored many fellow alcoholics, serving as their friend, mentor, and, at times, surrogate father. He successfully advocated for better employee assistance programs for addiction at Delta and at other airlines. He was active in a recovery group for pilots known as "Birds of a Feather International" (boaf.org).

Finally, following the traditions and practices of the Alcohol Anonymous program, he increased his conscious contact with God, becoming, in his later years, unexpectedly religious. Bill was a handsome, gregarious, generous, charming man who was quick with a smile and a story. One that he enjoyed telling was of landing a small plane on the practice football field of Holy Cross. Risk-assessment was not a gift he possessed, and this meant he most often learned life's lessons the hard way. He embraced and often lived up to his life-long nickname, "Wild Bill." However, when he practiced his program, he became his best self, and his prodigious social skills became powerful forces for good. Particularly to those who struggled with addiction, he was known for his kindness, wisdom, and availability.

Most importantly, he was quick to acknowledge his wife, Jeanne, as the reason he achieved what he did in his life. She was his north star, his best friend, his lover. Toward the end of his life, aside from sobriety, he believed that his greatest achievement was returning to her in equal measure the immense love she gave to him.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his brother Tom (Nancy), his sons Dr. John W. Danaher (Jill), The Rev. Dr. William J. Danaher, Jr. (Claire), his daughter, Joanne Chitty, and his grandchildren, Phoebe, Kate, Rose, and Jack. An online service followed by an outdoor, in-person interment with military honors in the columbarium will take place at Christ Church Cranbrook at 11:00am on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Please use the following link: https://christchurchcranbrook.org/church-at-home/

Memorial gifts may be made in Bill's name to Alcoholics Anonymous, General Service Office, Box 459, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163, or to Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. A.J. Desmond & Sons, (248) 549-0500.

NWA Capt. Ronald R. Gilbertson

January 27, 1933 ~ December 6, 2020

Northwest hire date : 10-30-1958

Please see obituary below.

Thank you,

From the RNPA website:
Ronald R. Gilbertson

1933 ~ 2020

Captain Ronald ‘Buzz’ Gilbertson, age 87, died in Mesquite, Nevada on December 06, 2020 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s and Dementia. Buzz was born January 27, 1933 in Brawley, California to George and Maxine Gilbertson. There was an older sibling, a sister. Buzz’s father was a WWII US Navy veteran which a factor in Buzz’s decision to also serve in the Navy. After WWII George Gilbertson struggled with TB and eventually moved the family to Minnesota. After recovering from TB George Gilbertson worked as a Minnesota State employee.

Buzz attended high school in Benson, Minnesota., which is west of the Twin Cities between Wilmar and the South Dakota border. He was considered a rather good student with a penchant for knowledge retention. He was an athlete, witness his skilled participation in basketball and swimming. Other activities included playing the clarinet in the school band. After high school Buzz enrolled at Gustavus College, a Lutheran liberal arts college in St. Peter, MN where he completed BA degree in Business and became a key contender on the college swim team. It was not coincidental that the year Buzz graduated from college, Gustavus College swim team won the Minnesota state swimming title.

Buzz had an uncle in Benson, MN who owned a single engine airplane. He introduced Buzz to flying and the aviation bug bit hard. In 1954 the military draft was still a reality for healthy young males. Now completing college, Buzz was prime for being drafted into the Army. Consistent with his father’s WWII legacy, Buzz entered the USN Officer Training School. Upon earning his commission, now Ensign Gilbertson began his preflight training at NAS Pensacola. His advanced flight training was at NAS Olathe at Gardner, Kansas. Buzz was named the outstanding graduate for his pilot training class. During his active-duty service, Buzz flew the legendary Douglas AD (A-1E) reciprocating engine single engine fighter. One of his claims to fame is to have never had a bolter or missed approach on a carrier landing. He was born to fly.

After active-duty service, Buzz transitioned to the USNR and returned to college. Preferring flying over business, Buzz applied for pilot employment with Northwest Airlines being aware that Northwest was a home state airline. He was hired by NWA on October 30, 1958, the beginning of a long and fruitful career. The aircraft Buzz flew at NWA include the DC-4, DC-6, Lockheed Electra, Boeing 727/320 and his favorite, the DC-10. In 1959, not long after Buzz was hired by NWA, a lovely young woman Janet Wedin started her own employment as a NWA flight attendant.

On their first date Buzz took Janet to see the cowboy movie Shane; it became their favorite. After a promising courtship Buzz Gilbertson and Janet Wedin married in a small Christian chapel. The date of their marriage was October 30, 1963. October 30th is becoming a date that plays big in their lives.

Buzz enjoyed airline flying and was immensely loyal to the pilot group. During non-pilot strikes he was often the last man working when the strike layoffs hit. He enjoyed every NWA airplane he flew.

During his active pilot years Buzz also enjoyed many outdoors activities, especially golf, hunting, and fly fishing. The couple purchased a cabin south of Big Timber, MT which they thoroughly enjoyed for 25 years. The cabin w

alls were decked with mounted trophy game heads of Elk, Deer, antelope and the floors were covered with coyote and bear rugs, testimony to Buzz’s hunting skills. Janet recalls many delightful picnics next to trout streams.

The Big Timber cabin led to their permanent retirement home in Bozeman, Montana. The couple were married for 57 years thoroughly enjoying each other’s company. They were gifted with three daughters, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Buzz put away his flight bag January 1993. Immediately after retirement Buzz and Janet traveled extensively, especially enjoying cruise ships. Janet recalls some favorites, cruising the St. Lawrence River and eastern ports of North America, Europe, especially a round robin cruise around the UK, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii (many times) and the Panama Canal which so fascinated Buzz.

About ten years ago a decision was made to begin ‘wintering’ for health reasons in Sun City at Mesquite, Nevada. They delighted in that community. With the onset of the Covid-19 virus and restricted public gatherings, Janet would prepare picnic lunches to be enjoyed at beautiful remote locations in their car. These little forays seemed to please Buzz.

Both Parkinson’s and dementia took their toll on Buzz’s health. He passed away on December 6, 2020. A memorial service is planned for May 2021.

One of our fine brothers has joined the ranks of many other distinguished aviators. We will miss you Buzz Gilbertson.

(-Bill Day)
